bike

video. We already went over very basic

mountain

biking terminology, etiquette, and techniques today. We're going to talk about how to be prepared for

your

trip, so before we get into the details, we need to talk about how you're going to carry

your

stuff. One method of carrying things that everyone is familiar with is a backpack or hydration bladder. In this case, Camelback backpacks are manufactured, but many companies manufacture them and they all have a bladder inside that you can fill with a lot of water.

. You don't have to get off the bike. You don't have to bend down to pick up a bottle. Just walk up, put the tube in your mouth and take a sip. It's hard to beat, but many cyclists, including myself, only use a hydration pack if there is no other option. Consider the imprint it leaves on your body, it makes you feel much warmer, it also adds weight to your back and you can feel it. It's not as comfortable to travel with one, some people don't mind, but if I'm going for a short walk I look for other options to try to reduce the load on me, so one step of a backpack is a lumbar backpack or the waist pack now it's practically a fanny pack, now there are tons of advantages to a fanny pack, first of all it doesn't cover as much of your body, it doesn't heat you up as much and it's very comfortable, plus it holds a good position. quantity of things and many of them are available with bags very similar to a hydration backpack, some can hold a water bottle or even several water bottles on one side and the good thing about that is that you have all your weight very low, a One of my favorite advantages for a lumbar pack is the ease of access, you can just loosen it, turn it around to the front and just reach down and grab

what

you need.

The disadvantages of a lumbar backpack are, firstly, that it has limited storage compared to a backpack. and also some people find that they bounce a little. It's also something else you're wearing, like your backpack, so it will make you feel a little hotter and a little less comfortable, but many cyclists find this happy. medium, so depending on the type of riding you are going to do, you may not need any of that after all, you can carry quite a few things directly with you in my left pocket. I have my cell phone here which is great for emergencies or navigation I have a multi tool right here that can do a lot of different repairs on the bike and actually things back here.

I have a bottle of water if you're doing local dirt jumps, doing some laps at the bike park or just going for a

ride

close to home, this may be all you need but there are other ways to carry your gear besides packing a bottle of water in your underwear or loading your pockets with things. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the water bottle and water bottle. cage, this will have enough capacity to get you through a couple hours of riding depending on the weather, as for tools, as I showed you, put a multi-tool in your pocket, but there are also ways to store them on your bike here, my head tube .
I have a chain tool, several Allen wrenches, and different types of wrenches that I would need on my bike. On my other bike I use this, which is just a pack that clips onto your frame and has everything you need inside, including an inner tube and tire inflator. CO2 cartridges and even a set of wipes for a completely different type of emergency, I personally find that, when going on a long trip, it is very good to carry high-calorie foods because they do not take up much space and they will give you the energy you need to get you through the day, so peanut butter and jelly sandwiches have trail mix and of course energy bars, energy chews.
I think at the most basic level we don't have to worry about nutrition, just

bring

some food so you don't sink and crash, you will also need to do common repairs that happen along the way, the most common will be a flat tire, No matter

what

type of tire setup you are using on your bike after fixing a flat, you will need to inflate it now, obviously you can do this with a bike pump, but if you have ever used a hand pump to inflate a tire on the trails, you will know that it is not fun and if you really By trying to be minimalist, it will be much easier to carry some CO2.
This is a CO2 cartridge and this is an inflator. To use it, you screw the cartridge here and then place it on your bike rim. Now you have the advantage of CO2. is that it is really very small and compact, it is also very easy, you can inflate your tire in just a few seconds, now the disadvantage of CO2 is first of all that it is a consumable, so if you use up your CO2 cartridge you cannot re-inflate something, whereas if you

bring

a pump it will always be there and it will always work, from what I have seen among my friends, about a third of the people bring CO2, a third ring is a bomb and the other third does not bring nothing at all and trust others to fix your tire now, a high end bike will have tubeless tires so there is no air tube inside, first of all it has sealant, when the tire gets punctured the sealant flows out the hole and repair the puncture. while traveling, but other times the hole will be so large that the sealant will not be able to repair the floor, in that case you will need a tubeless repair kit.
Now my tubeless repair kit fits here, right next to my water bottle cage and then inside This container is all you need to repair a puncture. Comes with a CO2 inflator, tire plugs, and a plug applicator. Now, if you have tubeless tires, a tubeless repair kit will get you out of 9 out of 10 punctures and it will. quick, but I still carry an inner tube because sometimes it's just not enough, so if you're not sure what to bring, just bring an inner tube with a strap to your frame or throw it in your bag and you can get home no matter what. let it happen, so I mentioned it before.
You must have a multi-tool with you. You'll need a multi-tool to make adjustments to your bike, put things back in place, or just do all the repairs in between. The tools in general are so small that it doesn't make sense not to have one. Now a good multitool will have a bunch of different sized hex keys and will have a chain tool. This stowaway multi-tool even has a tire lever and spare master link inside it, a great example of when you need a multi-tool, you crash, you get up, you're fine, but you look down at your bike and your bars are completely out of alignment.
Regarding your front wheel, now what Many people do is put the front wheel between their legs and force the handlebars back into place. It's not good, don't do it. It is very easy to fix it with a multi-tool. What we're going to do is just loosen these two clamping bolts on the side of the stem a little bit. Now the bars will move freely, so you just line them up by eye and retighten the tightening bolts very easily and you don't have to scrape the inside of the stem in the head tube, so let's say the chain breaks, which It happens more often than you might think, if you were prepared enough to bring a multi-tool and a spare quick link you can fix it right there.
The way now, most chains can be shortened by one or two links and you can still operate your bike, just use your multitool to remove the damaged outer link so you have two inner links and then reassemble the chain with your link fast. We're talking about carrying something that can fit in your pocket and something that big to repair something very common that will happen on the trails and that can mean the difference between pushing your bike home or pedaling home now in 2021, one of the Lo The most important thing you can take with you on your trip is your cell phone but of course sometimes you won't have cell phone reception so if there is some kind of emergency you won't be able to contact anyone other than you can find out where you are now.
I've mentioned forks before that it's a GPS mapping app for mountain biking and there are several similar apps, but if you don't have reception you can't open the maps as often. There is an option to download the map before leaving. This is something I highly recommend you do because if you know where you are and can orient yourself, there is much less chance of you getting lost and running out of food. or water or getting into a situation that you weren't prepared for if you're going out into the woods and you're not going to have cell phone reception maybe it would be a good idea to have a first aid kit and know how to use it now like I said, yeah You find yourself in an emergency situation, your cell phone is very useful, but only if you can tell a first responder where you are, you can use almost any mapping app, including Google Maps, so first press the location button and get your location, then zoom in and drop a marker where it is located.
Once you drop the marker you will be able to see your latitude and longitude if you give your latitude and longitude to the lifeguards they can at least pull. recording your location on a map and knowing a little bit where you are and if someone passes you on the way and goes to get help, giving them your latitude and longitude would probably be a good idea now if you're stranded somewhere and you don't have a cell signal and you are alone but your cell phone has battery at least you can use your cell phone camera to document the situation and if you survive you can make a viral video on youtube that will help you pay for the helicopter and the lifeguards for which they will seriously charge you if you live in the United States United, so in summary, decide what method you will use to transport your things, whether it is a backpack, a lumbar pack or straps.
For your bike, be sure to bring water, food, a way to repair a puncture, and a multi-tool, and it's especially good to be prepared for an emergency situation. This video is meant to be food for thought just to give you a really broad overview. on how to be prepared for a mountain bike
