V. Completa. La educación y la información, los dos pilares de la construcción social. Rosa Mª Calaf

Feb 27, 2020
I am very cautious about using images of violence. I think there are times when we have to use them, but we have to examine them case by case, because if not, more and more, we run serious risks of falling into these demands of the spectacle and giving a cinematic aesthetic of violence and, therefore, this really distorts. Because if we insist on giving more what impacts than what matters, in the end it ends up that what receives this information acquires and increases its level of saturation and also begins to value it differently. What do I mean? That fiction is increasingly mixing with reality.

And increasingly, as there is a lack of time to reflect and to analyze and ask questions, what remains is perhaps this simplified impact, but which has or can have very serious consequences. The issue of the extraordinary influence of the image is obvious, everyone knows it, but I always tell an anecdote, come on, which is not an anecdote, it is obviously much more than that. When I was in Bhutan... Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas, between India and China, the great giants, and at a certain moment, well in the 2000s, it decided to open up, the king will decide, it was a monarchy, The king decided that they should open themselves to the world.

He couldn't go. It was very closed... and it had to be opened to the world. Then they began to incorporate a series of new practices to educate, logically, as always, the value of education, since these people who had been here in this beautiful valley, on the other hand. They did many things, but one of them was that there was television that until then had not existed, and then they installed a television channel that you can imagine had no one because a large part of the country did not even have electricity, so they had to put generators.

But hey, they became like what teleclubs were here in their day. There was one television per area and people went to watch television there. A year later I was there to see what had happened. Well, in one year there had been a transformation of

social

practices, but spectacular ones. Because? Well, because a lot of things had changed. For example, food, what was happening? That their way of eating or cooking was slow, laborious cooking, logically with firewood... Well, they had all the time in the world, but what was happening? That then they began to get hooked on Indian soap operas, which was what basically arrived, because it was the possibility of the closest culture.

And they forgot about the topic of cooking, thereby simplifying cooking. The little altars that were in all the homes were removed in the central place of the common room, where people usually eat, sleep, and have family life, because here there was always an altar dedicated to the ancestors and spirits. , etc., depending on the different places. Furthermore, they are Buddhists, so they are also... come on, from a branch of Buddhism. And then, well, that small altar had been moved to one side because whoever managed to have a television put it in the center of the room. Let all of this, those of us of a certain age, remember that exactly the same thing happened in Spanish homes.
But the significant thing was to differentiate between fiction and reality because when they saw a movie, they believed that the actors died. So, when they told them: "No, man, this is a movie, it's just that." So, when they watched a news program, they thought they were watching a war and that people weren't dying. Well, this is what happens if there is an overuse of very violent images and they are images that clearly go on the one hand saturating the capacity for empathy and reaction. And if we look closely, there is, in fact, a study that talks about the syndrome of tired pity, because based on seeing... we have a level of tolerance, to pain, to tragedy and to all this that at a certain moment is already saturates And then?
Furthermore, given that all this valuation is given with a particular aesthetic, what ends up being achieved is that what is real begins to mix with what is not. And we watch the Twin Towers fall and initially you think this is fake. First because you don't believe it, because you already know that they have deceived you sometimes. And second, because it is made in such a way that it looks like a movie. For me it is much more important and much more meaningful to reflect what happens not with a dead person in the street. And I tell you, for example, in East Timor, there was a lot of violence at a certain moment, fortunately less than expected but still a lot, the population had to flee...
Well, it is not a question of putting a dead person in the street or an arm hanging on a tree in the foreground, but it seems to me that it tells the same people who have had to abandon it even though they have lost their families... putting a house in which the cup with the spoon is still there, and the coffee grounds. A child's notebook that is lying on the ground, a bicycle that is lying in a bush. That is to say, there are many ways of telling with the image the seriousness of what has happened and that this goes much further in this impact, but that it is no longer an impact because it is a reflection and because it is, in its case, a determination of responsibilities.
Why did this happen? And who has decided that this will happen? And what responsibility do I have in all this? In other words, you have to be very careful with the use and abuse of this type of images. It is true that at some point a certain very specific image causes citizens to stop, but above all it must stop beyond the first impulse and the first reaction. And this is where I believe that at this moment we have to be very demanding with what the media landscape offers so that it measures very well the consequences of what it refers to when creating a society that is not just a society of public emotion. , but rather a society of public opinion that incorporates emotion, but not only emotion.
And well, I think we could keep thinking about this idea, but we'll have to finish at some point. I thank you very much for staying here all the time and being so disciplined. But well, I would simply like to make a small summary of what is most important to me and what I would like to convey, which is this idea that we are clearly experiencing a moment of transition. We are lucky and fortunate to live in a moment of great change, but at the same time, logically there is a moment of tremendous concern about where we are going.
And the great unknown, well, all these possibilities that the technological revolution offers us, we are going to take advantage of them, but without ever forgetting and leaving ourselves behind, the ethics, the values and, above all, the importance of putting this revolution at the service of people and the common good, not just the good of a few. And obviously, that is, for citizens to be capable of that, they must have a good education, they must have good information, because knowledge is what will clearly make us free. And we must be convinced that, well, it depends on all of us and what each of us does that we choose one option or another.
That is, do we want a society of consumers who buy products and ideas, or do we want a society of citizens who think? And the Greeks, that is, I think it was Thucydides, already said that we had to, and he said it to the Greeks, we had to choose between resting, that is, doing nothing, being passive, or being free, because freedom requires a personal effort, because it is never, ever given away. And nothing more. Thank you so much.
