So we have his show scheduled today that was scheduled before the USFL blew up the world. We have CFL super agent Darren Gill. but i can tell you that there are certainly players today who believe that the best way to get to the nfl is going to be through the

usfl

. I am certainly aware of at least one player who had a verbal agreement with the cfl team to leave the cfl contract the day before. Not that the usfl would be up and running and that was granted, we are joined by the two time cup champion winnipeg blue bombers gray brandon alexander what they have built is on the ground you know it's the design this is the foundation of it all. the top is just pieces added over the years but that design is something that's been here before i got here long time friend of the show daryl davis comes to break down this week's cfl news , a lot of these guys 10 or 12 years ago none I don't think any of these guys write it even mike riley last year in the state they had in the capacity they showed last year 12 years ago none of them would have started in the canadian soccer league we have neil mcavoy co-general manager and director of soccer operations for team usa, the bc alliance, early 2000s, mid 2000s, you came to dc play, you weren't winning and we've got to get that mindset back and finally jed roberts, 13 years in edmonton, comes to talk about all the different different things that the CFO could be doing to market the league in 2022.

info

rmation um while you're listening to this on Friday about how the draft will work and what Then we talked about the draft. usfl

playoff

trades know they are moving venues for the final week and then the championship game so we dissected all of that so a bunch of usfl news from above I really appreciate pat for jumping in and doing that uh so we have the regular show that I had planned ahead of time, extra guests, we had some scheduling conflicts and everyone ended up being able to be on the show, so we have five guests this week, which is a bit overwhelming. i think paul probably uh his head would explode but uh we have darren gill darren is a super cfl agent wanted to know what darren thinks about you what does he think about usfl? think about contracts and you know players jump do you know go north or not all of that stuff darren has great knowledge on that and then we move to cfl from there we have brandon alexander a last minute special guest from the winnipeg blue bombers really appreciate that they created that.

Brandon is a two-time gray cup champion with Winnipeg. Dorothy will be very happy that we have a representation of Winnipeg on the podcast. Brandon is a great Brandon. week with daryl davis daryl is a cfl hall of fame reporter was at our live show in hamilton uh daryl is great im looking at my notes here is a lot uh courtesy of the alliance bc we have neil mcavoy coming neil is the co- general manager and director of football operations for the cfl team of america the bc alliance so we talked about that build you know our bc is buying a gray cup as you know i settled on that and then this is the delight what we got jed roberts jed had been with the edmonton huskies whatever you want to call it huh for 13 years his dad played in the league huh jed and i get into you you know a lot how to fix the league market the league what is edmonton is doing a good conversation really great with jad i really appreciate you taking the time to talk so that's kind of what we have today i really hope you guys enjoy it if you appreciate all the uh you know a lot of work to kind of pro gram these things and pat all these people jumping on uh please like and subscribe we have our big giveaway of 2 000 subscribers coming soon i think we can hit that uh you know by the time we get to usfl start , i just got my actual retros huh alt sort of dragons away jersey literally i sent them the pics and they said here you go you came in the mail i want to do a giveaway and we also have our gray cup merch and then we have the aaf commander shirt that we are going to give away to everyone that is going to be in the 2000 subscriber giveaway so please like and subscribe share the video you know a lot of work needs to be done on this, i really appreciate it and then speaking of the launch of usfl uh we officially announce this week it will be live from birmingham at south kitchen restaurant and bar it's literally across the street from the stadium p rotector so you know check that out you can watch it on youtube like we did in hamilton you know we had a bunch of guests huh if you're in the area obviously you know please come in they have food drinks tables and that kind of thing, we're going to be outside, I think so, if you're worried, you know security and all that stuff, I think we should be fine, we really just want to have a nice place where people can come and say hi and you know, watch the show if you want that's enough of me rambling i'm sure you're like lee freaking out right now but just a bunch of stuff today i really hope you enjoy and take good care of yourself now this has been a crazy day im kind of catching my breath here as we got this we got pat ruffino coming over from xfl news hub and cfonesub.com uh pads written articles for the marquis too uh pat how has your day been with all this crazy xfl stuff well usml stuff not even stuff from xfl I mean it's obviously been a bit of a whirlwind uh how a lot of people know we don't do this as a full time job so having the balance you know a full time full time job you know the real world responsibilities obviously with usfl stuff it's a little hard but you know we did it today because you know champs and uh that's what we do yeah as soon as we're done with this I'm going to load up on the wedding show of Seattle this weekend we have our big wedding conference I'm going to drive here but I wanted to open up so we've got kind of the big news flash we've got the usfl uniforms pat has his article that's going to stay tuned as you listen to this in the xfl news.
I hope you can see and then I want to talk about the playoff stuff and then the draft order, those are the top three usfl talking points today, but pat went through them and ranked them. its really good because i was getting a lot of hate for my comments on twitter about this so i think we better have pat maybe its like being impartial so if you dont like pat rankings then you can tweet pat but hey, let's get started, we'll take all these uniforms apart and do everything else. it did to me if i wasn't working a full time job i wouldn't like it but since you know i was in between meetings and all it made my life a little bit more convenient so obviously that's the usfl they had me in mind when they were doing this because why not but it was definitely ki It's funny because you know you're going back and forth and then people are arguing and then all of a sudden the next one comes out and you're like, oh wow okay we'll go back to the uh ronald mcdonald uniform house. but now we have to discuss this uniform so it definitely kept social media buzzing a bit which I think was the point it was good it was weird I mean you know they just went out last night they said I was coming I mean I felt that it felt coordinated today when it all came out that it felt a little rushed last night.
We thought, hey, guess what will happen tomorrow, yeah, because I woke up. My wife gets up. We get up at six. a teacher and i'm like god i already missed as part of these i mean it was crazy but i'm going to know usfl would base it on the east like a pacific time start eight start eight eleven that's ok no you start with five so let's start with number eight the worst we should start with or shoot yeah and then we'll start and then we'll go to the best so who got all the pictures here I'm going to upload them who it's number eight uh the uniform you have oh the stars it's terrible and i think it looks a bit like a ronald mcdonald house a bit um the uniform for me and i wrote it verbatim in my article was if the super bowl would have come to mcdonald's and done a buy our food commercial and they would have ronald mcdonald comes out in a football uniform i don't like the color scheme i think it's too much um it's a bit belligerent but you know it is and you would also think that I would because you know the hi history behind philadelphia in general they Maybe make it a little more red white and blue a little more patriotic historical but you know they went the other way and also when I think of stars I don't think of ketchup and mustard, never, never, I really liked it. but you know if anyone else has an opinion on this please feel free to s hare because im not a fan of that at all yeah i have the image here you might see the yellow bursting out of my face you might see the reflection bloom, um, it's very strong, they did a couple of things with these colors a couple of the colors are two-toned, which I really don't like.
The fan control football did a bit of that with the wild aces one and looks like a peddler robe. I do not like that. It's a very strange red I saw the gas station stuff the right people were posting a bunch of I don't know what x it wasn't exxon mobil yeah they have the same one it's very ronald mcdonald the stripe on the helmet looks really cool imposed here i don't know if that's it that's i don't think about the helmet i mean is it or is it a sticker on there that doesn't really fit it would have done like take the stars and run across if you had made that stripe and ran those star logos diagonally on there um , yeah, really bright yellow pants is this kind of consensus, the worst I think, based on twitter, the twitter universe and the instagram universe from what I've seen. um, especially with a lot of these uniforms looking pretty, I must say they're soft, but you know, the pretty neutral colors and all that stuff definitely swung over the fences on this and I'm sorry they missed but who knows, they'll probably win the championship and we'll all forget about it because that's how those things work this two tone on the side as well which I didn't this one has the side image I don't think they all have the same wonderful assets provided by us outlets of the movie and then i mean really great production value with all the ads i thought all the ads were good but this is like a tire track they're like skid marks on the side uh that goes on till the pants, um, very strange, very strange, I don't know. get the stripes like me are thestars should be stars if they put stars Going back to the helmet, I think it would have been like with a better color tone, maybe or maybe more neutral colors that would have put me in my ranking, but sometimes less is more and, you know, Some of these uniforms made me want. they blessed them, they knocked it out of the park, you know, like mine to not go into the future a little bit, but seven to four are pretty interchangeable to me, yeah, i just think this one is probably the boldest of all.
I mean, I think we'll probably spend more on this, but only because it is, but yeah, I don't get that I don't get the skid marks with that, so okay, so that's the philadelphia stars like number eight, what is the number? seven uh birmingham studs i'm a little disappointed um i thought they would do more with um something like the switches did some things uh and they're obviously a little higher on my list but i wish birmingham was kind of uh front and center the usfl with all these games and how much good this is going to do for alabama city i would have thought they would have done something with the horse maybe in the actual jersey or added maybe like maybe a horsepower like something with speed or something like that or maybe as a tribute to alabama in general because this is a professional football team in alabama the people in alabama love football and that is how birmingham is going to be front and center in the league so let people know you know uh be careful your mic is brushing your jackets a bit uh thats yeah the helmet is good i think we had seen this helmet ok when it came out uh it was one of the who came out with e l chest every time they did that big press conference I was there I mean it's always just stickers it's really weird to me that people get up in arms over helmets huh but yeah I mean was it this that? you said i felt very 49ers uh yeah yeah i did i felt like i liked his alternative a little bit which, i'm talking out of both sides of my mouth because sometimes you know and one of the jerseys further down list has a kansas city chiefs vibe which i really enjoyed but i felt like this should have been more personalized because it's birmingham and it's kind of a league baby if that makes sense i really like the font for the number I really like the eight that really squares I don't mean it obviously looks good because it's an eight maybe you know like a nine or 18 or 19 maybe they could do that similar square I like the pants to be a classic. look with it i feel good it feels safe though like you said if you're going to have the premiere it's in the early game stripe again we have the big stripe going down the mohawk i'm not i'm not opposed to the mohawk . problem, I may be a little biased because the post Ions is one of my favorite logos.
I feel like it's a logo for sure anytime you go stallion mustang foal something like that and I don't have any loyalty to it but I definitely feel like it's a great logo and they could have made maybe one. or two like adjustments here and there and then they're top four in my opinion okay so that's number seven so number six I went with the michigan panthers my favorite thing about this one is because they are light blue. It reminds me of seahawks how they use that teal from time to time so I really liked seeing the light blue just kind of shaded in there and I feel like it wasn't overdone too much because they got the main colors the maroon that gold and the uh and the uh light blue i like the helmets better because it encapsulates the whole actual helmet with their logo and that's kind of important to me like how oregon will you do with the ducks kind of those t hose duckies on the helmets so definitely I'm a fan of uh the panthers uh the jersey doesn't really allow me much um and I'm not really into gold pants I really like seeing regular silver or white pants personally. the helmet this brand i think reported this brand you know with new sub two of the helmets need custom paint this has to be one of them the panthers with this with the inlay going in with the chin strap and all that huh i think that uh , i wish the panther knew to blend a little better with the helmet cutout there as she turns with it i mean its just me being anal obsessive but i like the color of the shirt i have a john dinner shirt thats exactly it the color from when he what it was must have been like massachusetts wherever i cant remember john cena uh terrible photo job here with the white pads showing um through the burgundy thats a little rough i would say the um the photographer on this one was probably missed with that huh you can you can actually see the reflection of the white through the mesh it looks a little more tangled than the others a little more transparent yeah definitely n I heard that in photography I also went more into the helmet the helmet is what it did for me just because they're a little bit bolder and, you know, they're only just number six so it's not like I went with everything but you know which is between the helmet and the uh in that light that light blue that did it for me so it's weird it's weird how the stripes come together on the shoulder it's like it's not really a wrap around like that it stops, yeah, it's like two sections and then you can see that's like, you know, that's the burgundy in the middle, that's weird, it's a weird design in, I don't know if that would be definitive, if they're going to make fun of that better if this is the wait the away jersey definitely sells it a lot more to me than the home jersey and I think part of that is the me sh of the jersey as well so we'll see we'll see you know you know we have a couple more months so we'll figure it out yeah and these are just provided the local hi res so obviously there's there are some white ones but i think these will get a lot more out of the game normally these are the ones for sale ok number five i went with the tampa bay bandits um i like how they went the opposite of the tampa bay. the vipers were, you know, a little bit more conservative and whatnot what i really found fascinating was that it reminded me of the ufl las vegas locomotives especially but not the usa ones where i went with that um just a clean book huh and it's one of the first teams on our list to have the logos on the shoulder which is what you know it's a little different and that's what I like huh yeah the tampa bay logo is definitely the best uh this got a lot of o f buccaneer vibes kind of these pewter pants true it's that color kind of that uh it's uh we also have the parting the parting goes all the way i don't like it it's never going to match even like y'all have the pic on here like it never was to match this is the photo pressed when this stripe doesn't match you know what I mean like it never looks right and it's the best it's ever going to look so I think that was weird yeah the red the reds , no, I'm not crazy about red, but you definitely know that d It's definitely not the worst obviously you know it's literally in the middle of the pack in our in our countdown um so you know I like the logo on the shoulder you know I like the throwback a little unintentionally to a team of the ufl so yeah you know it's better than the other three we mentioned and literally half the jersey yeah yeah buccaneer vibes yo you know it's good I like the logo I can't being a tampa bay fan but i like the logo ok and number four oh this is complete bias we talked about this before i only picked this one because uh of the mean machine and miami sharks houston players number four oh yeah yeah this is this is this is straight from you know nostalgia for me um you can never go back to bad with all black um also those throwbacks i mentioned really make it fun but you don't know nothing too crazy and uh for the helmet and the logo um adding you know the g with the state of texas on he but the houston star is amazing as the design but everything else is pretty simple so once again a middle of the pack jersey but funny how he copies miami sharks and mean backyard machine more long yeah y'all have I've seen that yeah long story and then any given Sunday the albucino team back at it with these stripes never I guess I didn't really pay attention. the art ticcle i started looking at the helmets and i said and that's what you know i was going to put the number seven of the panthers but then because i saw the work with the jersey or the helmet it was ok you guys can be in the number six yeah you know you've got the two shades right you've got the gray going black backwards on that I think this would probably be one of the easiest shirts to wear like I want to wear it the street i don't think i get mugged like um you know like some of the jerseys i wear like mine i guess i should point out it's a good day i got my royal retro xfl dragons away custom jersey the the day everything this came out huh but no yeah this is very safe i think i'm technically a player fan because that's who we cast on the podcast but i don't I love this look, eh jersey, it looks like the old jersey.
I was going to buy one of these from royal retros but it seemed a little too plain for me uh number three so number three is the maulers and i like the maulers for their outrageous color uh color um scheme but they didn't go over the top like the stars did so they have enough of yeah we have bright colors yeah we got this going they have the logo on the shoulder which is a big deal for me because it changes it you know it makes it look like the jerseys they weren't made into a ncaa team builder but it's also not how look at my purple pants look at my orange pants all the pants are pretty conservative and you know i think it flows really well together yeah the pants definitely tones it down this is one very flashy shirt um there's a lot going on where you know you've got this two tone collar right then you're tucking the shoulder pads under but then you have the white trim on the neck of the shirt it's just a lot there are many colors I like the number it seems that I have heard a lot it seems that the aafols of the aaf I lost myself that I was not you can you see again the irradiated colors of my face I was not eh I was not you know that I did not live through the aaf i was more of the xfl type but um yeah the two shades there the purple this is really divisive is it at the top of people lists or the bottom of people lists yeah um , if this would have been my number seven if they changed the pants but because you know i feel like they will finish away the jersey looks good too i think they kept it in my mind and um you know it's nothing too over the top and just the color enough to show off the logos and you know like i said i'm big on shoulder logos at this point it's definitely a fan i'm definitely a fan of this jersey uh the colors are a little weird for the city of pittsburgh you know i would have maybe alternating black and the yellow but you know they did a good job they don't look too crazy with their colors so yeah I saw this simulated with colors like the Steelers and it looked so much better I mean you know the Steelers the pirates the penguins i feel like they all would have been fine if the maulers went to black and yellow yeah ok number two uh the breakers like the way the shirt is beautiful it falls very soft in my article i use the term calm before the storm it has a very common effect aesthetically i think its one of the most pleasing shirts on the eye i love the wave on the shoulder once more. the logo on the shoulder flows nicely and that's it i like the number scheme and you know i think it looks really very calming you know it's a very relaxed tee nothing too crazy and sometimes like i said simple is better but the way it flows especially with that wave coming into this moto for me it was a top as a top four jersey right off the bat yeah this is the other right that must have the custom paint job. i like that i i j i just think we are a pro league i mean i think in high school we can put a sticker on the helmet i think in this yeah um i mean even like the dragons and the xfl i wanna say that that was the sticker, but it always felt more part of the uniform true I always felt more part of it I like that the stripes are only on the pants and do not go all the way you have a nice sleeve I think it suits you well and i didn't like this one when i saw it before looking at it now the way i think the wave fits nicely on the shoulder and then continues down the parting like you said for the pants i think it's nice and the pants look like a light silver blue so it's not that white they're not it doesn't look white to me so I think that's what makes it a little bit different also because they could have taken the easy wipe instead of the wet one it looks like it's so light silver blue , which is much more pleasant for me when I keep looking at it, especially in that hom mijersey when they're wearing their blue jerseys uh yeah there we go ok so uh the number one must be the no no the players must be the generals only the girls so uh extreme bias i'm a shore boy This one from New York originally, but you know I put them in my top four, but when i actually looked at the jersey, something i missed was the stars on top of the shoulder pads and then the numbers on the shoulders, so that's why i loved it. i love the red collar i love the number the way the numbers look with the red and away jerseys and i love the white it reminds me of the kansas city chiefs like i mentioned before when the chiefs are all white like that that there's definitely um I'm definitely a fan that the generals logo is very simple a throwback to obviously their old logo and the very clean spray logos with the helmets um I really like it here it kind of gives me those Georgia vibes with the Red Sox. red red and white um and i'm kinda glad they didn't go all red pants too i thought that might have been an easy escape but you know they only go with the red tops and to me that's a very clean look nice everything looks sharp on these jerseys omg it was hard to find the away jerseys here as you were talking but i found it because i just wanted to show the picture here before that um god this is really good uh i really like the pants i like it a lot it's clean but has personality i thought that originally i thought where my photos went here i thought i originally had the i guess the replica has the logo on the sleeves this has the numbers the replicas don't fully match the shoulders are on top or the logo yeah oh I like that okay yeah that's what sold me as soon as I saw I'm like you number one cause no one else has that you know I had to double check that I really The entity doesn't show up well in any of these photos.
Do you think they cut it off? I went to Twitter. I like the Twitter videos, uh, they showed up very well, yes, and they present when they present the uniforms just because, a couple of press photos show them they have like they know doing more of a stance and I think because of this yeah you can see it here where he's doing the heisman or whatever yeah um I just have the trump connotation with the generals I get that that's totally as a separate thing and this is yes its been years later but i just have a feeling that every time we see i moderated instead of facebook groups and like every time generals are mentioned like everyone is talking about trump and it's like you know good and bad and different but yeah it's hard for you to have such a legacy from one of these linked brands for better or worse I mean whatever you want to think and do and what it says, but it's polarizing in the way that I don't think football bol should be yeah and I definitely definitely think of that as in general when it's especially with the brand new usl sfl in general but you know if we could forgive people for other things we can forgive a football, no I'm not like defending against it but it's football get over it we'll be fine you I know you either like the shirt or you don't those two things are not synonymous so I don't know if you think I'd like to believe that people don't pick their jerseys because of a political figure but if you're um you know if you're for or against just know this is the best jersey regardless of your politics wanted to get the other note on jerseys here and then we'll get it out here real quick we'll talk about the playoff stuff uh usfl news on twitter and then mark had the story later also talking about uh ripon athletic berlin berlin wisconsin will make it and then rydell will do the helmets because i was looking, can s see the oakley logo and the is riddell or rydell yeah yeah the bolt y'all yeah I used to work with rydell so that throws it out I think it's riddell but anyway just so you know locally made that's good that's nice you know there's no branding like um under armor on the logo or on the uniforms or anything that looks like it's their is their thing um either way you know they look pretty good um the league or there's two ways this is going to go the league is going to get better and they are going to adapt or they are going to go to the land of soccer misfit leagues so you know either way we are blessed by 2022 we will have at least one spring soccer league and if It lasts a year or 100 years I'm excited about it so uh a couple more things here we'll go so we've got the lottery draft so more

details

coming Friday while you're listening to this I guess if they're going to air it , they said that they told me that they would not do it or that there were no plans that could they would have changed. now it seems like they're getting a little bit closer to like listening to the fans maybe a little bit which is good but they announced today's lottery draft was in speech for yourself uh i never know how to pronounce their much better hostnames than colin coward, right? did you see any of this or were you working so i was watching uh i actually saw the skit when i got off work marcellus wiley and emmanuel eight he co-hosted the grad party when chris harrison got kicked out that's how i didn't get voted out he got kicked out there because he had some bad stuff I know I know him more for that than football which is kind of funny yeah well um so I'm curious to see how they do this I really like the way they aaf did his little draft party i thought he was cool with the qbs and stuff um as far as he was going to be the number one pick statistically i'm going out josh josh johnson because why don't you know why not he won't get drafted in another football league he will yeah he has to hit this platform so they did this they drew balls it was very weird more convincing than cowardly they seemed a lot more committed than Colin yeah um so it was like the lottery ball, so go It's eight to one.
I guess this is a snake draft, right? We will go. They're going to announce all this but that's the conceit because you can't do a one to eight set every time but uh the breakers are the number eight shapers the seven studs the players the number five generals for the bandits of stars and then the michigan panthers which is in a way one of the most popular teams online right now. i think jeff fisher has to do with it i think he is the most notable person in training on the coaches carousel with a person on the coaches roster um but still you know michigan kind of a sadness factory now that you know that cleveland has a couple of championships and i hope you know the people of michigan can give a championship you know some good picks and figure it out you know i do especially with stafford winning a super bowl like last week and then watching the photographer fall off the super bowl platform that was crazy i mean it's not a good look for the staff for all of them like other news like that they are paying the hospital better right now that's a horrendous look i've seen that video about 20 times and he's like whoa and like he turns and walks away and you see the girl drop um so this is happening Tuesday like I'm still being asked today like you think it's going to be ar in peacock as jake henry whatever it's a big production to put something on tv of any kind i mean if they assume i don't think they're going to zoom you know be on youtube or whatever but they like to put anything on peacock or any kind of stream. platform in all of that it's not that youtube is such it's a feat i just don't want to say you have like a td and a director and a producer and you like graphics like you're not i mean the xfl was a camera with zoom for like eight hours i just think it's going to be too long i don't think they think it's going to be convincing enough i think they feel like today i think they're going to watch today and voila we got 5000 followers tweeting this fox sports uniform stuff retweeted nbc retweeted it like why the hell do we need to air our draft we're just going to do the same thing I mean I would like to and this is and I don't know how legal this is but I would like them to tell the first eight players that it was drafted, tell them, hey, the USFL will draft them, have them be on a zoom or something and then from there, like you know, josh johnson, jordan tamu, they don't know where they are. they're redacting me but show it that way or record that and then you can post that yeah I mean I don't I think we need to stream it but you could have it as a great little clip.
I agree, look, that's a good idea. transfer my bank account to you guys but i think that's the closest thing to the fairest thing to do without going all out like the aaf did because it's like hey man maybe if you hadn't done that we would have had an extra week or two of football that you could have funded you know I don't think Matt Sims really wanted to go to Carolina and you know waiting all those hours to find out he wasn't being drafted by the legends or whatever team was the first pick in the draft in the usf 1983 was dan marino i just fell into football like last year so i didnt know that at all thats sad ok uh last we gonna get here so they had the big shake up the other day they came out they announced uh usfl we're playing the whole game is in birmingham except we're just playing the regular season in birmingham we're not in the playoffs we're not in the championship game which is weird so this had been i

info

rmed i had read this in the articles that roy s johnson and everyone else had posted that there they had thought maybe there would be some conflicts with the world games being set up in time to start right after uh i think they had thought maybe maybe originally they could do some of the games at legion field i was talking to roy offline roy thinks it's too big a stadium it seats 70,000 and try to show a championship game there maybe with that many people True, maybe that wouldn't look better on TV, so they're doing it. in canton at tom benson st uh hall of fame stadium where they do the hall of fame game uh i don't know how the logistics are going to work with them sending players there that seems like a pain in the middle of you guys know it could end the regular season and then you have to level up in the middle of the week and practice you know it's not like you're yeah maybe like regular season right you like to get out of town on the weekend but here you've been living in birmingham for a month or two months and then you're moving huh what do you think about them playing canton at tom benson hall fame stadium so i like it because it brings the nfl Participate a little and any time you have your big brother helping you it's never a bad cabin as far as logistics with hotels yes it will be a hassle but on the plus side I'm assuming it will be four games making the playoffs what most likely i hope they're not making a team of six and then a two-week buyout or a two-team buyout, but regardless of whether they make it, uh, four teams will make the playoffs and then you know it's really only two weeks.
I know you'll do your semi and then you and then your playoff game and if you do I rig Honestly you only need to house these players in Ohio for eight days if they practice all day in Birmingham, show up in Ohio, play the game and then they're playing the game seven days later, so yeah, it says here, yeah, that's you. back to correct the final they will start on the 25th of June the top two teams are the beat division yeah I would have thought they would have done a two week playoff I guess a little disappointed so you have the semis then the final .
They haven't announced the championship game title yet, which I wish they would. I've been asked if the spring league mega bowl lineage carries over to the usfl. I don't believe it. I mean you. you know mr woods obviously you have ties you never know whatever it is your world we are all living in it but you know i mean and even you know i'm a fan either way like i said i'm excited. we are blessed we really are from having another football league and you know spring league you could say all you want about it but in the end they gave us football during covet they gave us showcases they had were on tv last year you know what my man ryan willis you know he's on an nfl team right now and he was on an nfl roster on an active roster so they're churning out good talent from the unknown so he could say all he wants about the league spring, all that silly stuff, but they're quite successful in my opinion, so I think it's okay.
I was a little duller in the t-shirts today. I got a like. I said I have a lot of slack online but now that I'm looking at them and again if you don't like the rankings. qb nfl seven what is uh nfl cube talk nfl qb talk we have uh pat ok first showing today appreciate the article check it out on the xfl news sub then we will bring you back im sure they do more usfl stuff coming soon in the future no , I'm thankful thank you for having me I'm truly blessed thank you guys I just wanted to come back and thank Pat for coming on the show y'know crazy day getting out of his work day taking time to break down the whole USFL uniform in Valencia.
I would beremiss if I didn't say and ask if you have your own usfo uniform rankings uh leave them in the comments on youtube ya know help build that algorithm help start the conversation i'll check it out and kind If you know, please comment, I'm sure other people will comment, I think it's a very good talking point that way, so I'll leave you to the rest of the interviews, now we'll close the show with that. see you here next week and again uh you know please like and subscribe get ready for the two thousand giveaway we're coming soon thanks well listener kyle already promised online today that this would be an amazing interview so we have darren gill listening no pressure with everything how are you today sir?
I'm great thank you and I appreciate the no pressure piece because apparently people are already excited to hear this conversation which I appreciate by the way but yeah a little bit of extra pressure yeah well this is good huh? knows? we had mike mitchell last week, he did kind of a big breakdown of usfl contracts, you know, through the player's handbook and everything that came out, but he wanted to have an agent in uh, you know, specifically darren, who's been on the show before and talks about you knowing his thoughts on everything and then more importantly the whole spring football landscape, right?
What does usfl mean to cfl and how is this all going to work together? of talk even as jim mullins of the world and all you know about the effects this would have what are your thoughts on the usfl sure that's a good question and obviously first of all thanks for hav call me back i appreciate it, you guys are producing some phenomenal content and really filling a void for the fans, so you know, keep up the good work, in terms of you know the concept of other leaks and obviously we're talking about another league here. and there certainly have been others whether it's your favorite league in the xfl or the spring league or the usfl it's really about player choice and opportunity you know I think arena soccer was never seen as an option really viable just because the pay was so low so it was almost discounted as real competition and I know I know it was because the players were going there but any player if they could would rather play on a full size outdoor field because their goal is always to get to the nfl and you know that in the back of every player's mind is what league can i go to or where can i go or what can i do to do that and i would say that's a certain consideration that players now have The other option and I think the real big question is going to be exactly what is the best way to achieve those dreams by looking at the type of contract structure or even looking at, um, do you know what the player's net salary might be? a given current year, unfortunately, I'm not sure that's going to be what makes a decision because regardless of whether we're comparing CFL salaries to USFL salaries, there's going to be give and take and potentially, frankly, you'll know some gains on both sides really becomes what's my best way to get to the next league I want to go to because everyone's eyes are on the same spot and I think that's where there's a big question mark um and I certainly don't have the answer today, but I can tell you that there are certainly players out there today who believe that the best way to get to the nfl is going to be through the usfl.
I'm certainly aware of at least one player who had a verbal agreement with the cfl team to leave the cfl t contract in the event the usfl was up and running and that was granted so here's a player here he is a player who has really decided that the usfl would be a better fit for him so you know it's a loss for the canadian football league and now i don't think everyone feels that way because there's obviously a surge of players signing up in the cfl on a daily basis but I think that's the consideration, less in terms of actual salary and more you know more about you know where the best place is for visibility and obviously you know in some cases you know what's closest from home and he obviously knows there are some cities that are a lot closer to home than maybe he knows saskatchewan winnipeg edmund center calgary it's so hard that way i mean i think it was chad gider when he was talking about retiring arse before 20 do you know what season 2021 how do you know go to Canada and have the second home and do all these things and you know that I Maybe it's easier to just get an apartment in Birmingham or go to the hotels or whatever whatever they are talking about.
I mean it's a little easier than spending. half of your year there vs 16 weeks in Birmingham this year in any other city after that it's a tough decision to make in that regard I think you're absolutely right and obviously covet hasn't made things easy for Canadians, as well as travel restrictions certainly have. concern has increased about coming to canada do you know if i can go back to the country that i am going back to canada to the united states my family can come in you know what the protocols are and do it you know what are the tests i have to do and how many of those testing, so obviously a new wrinkle was added that you know I certainly think is a point of consideration that certainly hasn't stopped players from coming to the league, but that?
It kind of gets interesting and I think any player's point as well and you brought up this kind of thing as we watched uh maybe the big resignation that happened in the workplace happened a little bit in the canadian football league with some players who decided to hang up their shoes instead of playing football when we came out of the pandemic and restarted the league and you know the players had to make that decision, you know the players where they were certainly forced to go and do something different, get a I work and find ways to make money and then the league said okay we're back and a lot of those guys walked away and certainly you know last time I was here we talked about alex matthaus and brad sinably and there's something there's been others, there have been players who just decided to leave because it wasn't the big career move for them, so the irony is that, especially for Canadian players, the comp etency is not playing foo. tball you know I have several players who actually take a pay cut even though they are well paid because I'm a great agent so I get them great offers but they take a pay cut to play football for the year because of their football job offseason they could be doing a lot more all year long if they really committed to the job they have but because they love the game they keep playing but there are certainly guys right now who know they're doing exactly that and it's always about the opportunity and really what you're competing with and usfl becomes something else to compete with and um and I think um you know it's great for the game by the way because what you're also doing besides competing for players is you're keeping to more active players so you know these leagues need to keep filling out their rosters and part of the problem has been that there have been no feed systems or other leaks now that they're guys you're seeing guys jump back and forth either the xfl or the u or or the spring league and filling uh more roster spots and frankly getting in better shape and getting ready to compete so that you know overall um i think there's enough appetite for the various leagues and the good news is there's certainly enough players out there to start filling those roster spots yeah and that's what i mean as well even with the usfl and you know when the xfl with her you know she's coming back next year you know this is it anyway the signs are pointing you know having competing leagues is always better for the players in terms of pay per talent I mean we saw that in wrestling when wwe and wcw and having the ability to go you know you're competing for that talent it's always better for the player i mean that's why you know we could poke fun at the usfl a bit but obviously we support this success, uh, so that they continue and can employ the coaches, the staff and the people in the stadiums and the coaches and all these things. and there are hundreds of people participating in addition to the 50, well the usfl has a smaller roster but you know all 45 players on the field right?
I think that's the key here, you know we love the game of soccer. right I think you know we're here because we love the game and making sure football succeeds is important to us and obviously that comes down to the grassroots um so you know you can get more kids to play because they want to know cheer on your home team, the more players go through the system, this is all feeding off and obviously football has suffered a bit recently because of some of the head injury concerns and that has certainly hurt the numbers, we need the numbers. to grow back we need to get people to fall in love with the sport again and part of that is going to be giving people more access, which is going to more games and seeing more people in their community and hearing from more kids from their ar ea that did good um you know i'm sure you know there are kids right now who are looking up to a guy who played in the xfl played in nfl europe played in will play in the cfl will play in the usfl um you know play football Canadian college so the growth of the game is important and certainly you know it won't hurt any other league if another league succeeds certainly I think it's safe to say that nothing will displace the national soccer league that is here to stick around, but within the parameters below that, I think there are enough dollars that want to spend money on it and enough players that want to participate and hopefully that continues to lead to the grassroots to foster that love and continue to grow the numbers. what we have. when the usfl sub came out you know we were talking you know 45,000 base salary correct and then you know the dashboard of mine and all of that looking at the correct base salary cfl 65,000 but obviously a lot of players get paid you know, looking at free agency right now, we had some mega signings with a lot of really good players who deserve it, so it's a number equal to the balance or most CFL guys are a little bit above that base salary. just so you know, people are paying attention, sure, I mean there's definitely competition for the guy right now, he's coming up with his first contract and he's coming up to 65,000 and he has options and that's where he's going to come back though. his decision-making about where he thinks is the best opportunity to make the most money, which is obviously going to the national soccer league, but in terms of salaries, they will be pretty similar, so you know if you have a guy. right now he just graduated from wherever you know ohio state or he graduated from citadel university or you know the university of maryland and he's making that decision and he's presented with a contract canadian football league that's going to being very close, if not the bare minimum, he's definitely looking at the dollars a little bit again, I still think his primary consideration is going to be where is the best place for me to accomplish what I need to accomplish. and to go to the next level and obviously you know with the history of this Canadian soccer league thing and how long it's been around and frankly the fact that it's never been in a much better place from an ownership standpoint is pretty good place to hit your wagon but i know there are a few other options that become more appealing and its the route to the nfl and staying closer to home you and i dont want to put you in the spot with this? but do you think the cfl priest presents from a tape from a game perspective of agents who look at, uh, you know, for other teams and things a better opportunity than the usfl just because it's more established and more competitive yeah i think that the fact that it's is Established, I mean it's a known quantity and, you know, there's a case history of guys coming into community soccer again and having a lot of success, whether it's in the league making good money in the league or if it's going down and uh and doing that route to the nfl so there's testing and that's the only thing they have that other league frankly it's not like you know there's a system that has worked and frankly it works extremely well and which is it's never been better at doing that so from that point of view that's something the league has an advantage on but also some people like the new and the unknown right some people are willing to try that and in this So far you know I'm not saying there are some good stories coming out of the usfl but they know it's a compelling story this is how we're going to run the league and they know we're going to run it as a kind of player centric league and you know we're going we're going to be lean we're going to do things right and we're going to try to give you a chance and you know it's hard to say no to that too so I think it's good competition it's healthy competition but obviously I think the league Canadian football team still has an edge, you talkwith you the only player who decided to go south right the other way to usf i mean do the vast majority of cfl teams you know gm whatever they know what a usfl is i mean , is that? even on their way there or is it just normal business oh absolutely um i guarantee you obviously they are dealing with agents and players on a daily basis who have to force themselves to make that decision and certainly compete against it. now the only good thing from a cfl point of view is that even though there is a competition it's not really financial so we're not talking about maybe we're talking about a few thousand dollars in exchange rate and you know how it's the canadian dollar versus the us dollar but we're not talking about a guy going you know I can make half a million dollars playing somewhere doing something and you're paying me 65. so you know now it's really about opportunity and there it is where is the cfl he gets to sell himself but without a doubt um i'm sure neglect on a daily basis is being handled by understanding the fact that there are some guys you know are going to go the usfl route and not chase the cfl and they're being I didn't say um so it has to be something that's a consideration for sure well it's good I mean we get a lot of criticism online in the cfl groups and you why are you talking about this or why are we talking of that? we just assumed for a long time that's okay, maybe the coaches are right, I don't think anyone thought and again obviously we want base salaries to go up, but I don't think people even thought 45 would be possible, right?
I think people thought it was going to be a little shorter, so I thought pe People assumed it was going to be more trainers, maybe bouncing, oh, I could go get a job at the, you know, and that's supposed to be the usfl will go up but now that they're also players I mean it's interesting and it adds another wrinkle to that and that's why we know we talk about all the leagues on the show that we do and not just one or the other yeah and I think they're doing it for the right reasons, they know it's 100 is something to consider huh and it's competition and you know it's not spring league right?
The spring league was designed to basically be a feeder for everyone and not necessarily a natural competitor. Some players were paid. Some players were paid to be there. So a whole set of circumstances that was honestly never seen as a natural competitor or threat in the case of the usfl is so you guys are attacking it for the right reasons because from a player's point of view, um, there will be competition from the coach's point of view as you pointed out. There's going to be competition anyway, and like you said, you know with the salaries, the way they're structured, they're competitive enough that someone has to sit down and make a decision in terms of where they want to play. just in terms of like you said, we didn't want to get too much trouble with the contract, except I'm curious about this, not competing, right where really the only way out of USF's contract is basically being signed to a practice squad or you know practice list you know in the nfl they have to free you from that but no you don't know it doesn't compete with you you know like the cfl and the xfl true I am the idea that when you are signing the first year that you are basically opting for a second year subject to the league basically saying we don't want you back next year I mean it's normal it doesn't seem strange to me maybe that's normal you know it's very similar to a cfl contract in terms of players not being open and compete also just when you know you're locked into a cfl contract now the term could obviously be something that's a little more flexible or different obviously we know the Canadians are locked in s on different deals um you know the Americans are on their first deal but otherwise the same kind of parameters are built in in terms of their ability to go and compete or gain access somewhere else now obviously in the league of Canadian football, you can't jump to the NFL for a practice roster, right? so honestly some of the rules around accessing the national football league could be a bit looser but in terms of trying to tie players up and keep them in your league that's normal and you would certainly expect it but me but i would also expect any rule breaking so just in case the usfl is going after a player they have in mind because i'm sure there are some they know some notable players they want to add to the roster. r you know and i'm not saying i know for sure but you know it just goes along the lines of rules that are made to be broken um in cases where it makes sense but um but in terms of the kind of baking uh in you know that the contracts are very similar and expected and cfl players are obviously a bit uh you know bound by some similar terms uh the other benefit that this uh usfl is giving a lot of their players is this right education plan they are able to get educated in Debt free line while they're in the league and then if they get cut as long as they keep the enrollment right they can continue that entitlement so they don't get cut and then it's okay I'm out of school or whatever tempting is something we'd like to see more like with other things or options i mean it seems like that was something that got a lot of press from them it got a lot of people excited and i don't know if anyone would really like doing it or not , but it's something that gets a few clicks, so what do you think about that?
I love the concept and the Canadian soccer league. The players association has been doing a phenomenal job, potentially a little less on the education side, even though they have some programs available, but more importantly preparing their athletes for life after football and under the leadership from brian ramsey this pa has made tremendous strides in the last five to seven years and the growth in terms of what they provide as value to players is ten times what it was when I started about 20 years ago so I think that has to be at the forefront of every league potentially minus the NFL because players are making so much money that you really want to teach them how to handle their money and manage it versus what they're going to be doing after the game even though I know the NFL has great programs , but the leagues where obviously the players make enough money to live, that's really not enough money to retire, they need to spend more time a making sure that once you get to know these players after they finish their careers help them get to the next phase i think these leagues have that responsibility because of what the players i give them and i'm glad the usfl is doing that um i think they know again that the cflpa is doing some really good things potentially that's also why the usfl had to go down that path acknowledging the fact that the cfl would be um you know the competition and make sure that that's something that, uh, that they were able to offer in a pretty similar way, but that's something that I was happy to see, and I really hope that the players that are in both leagues, whatever they are, take advantage of those systems because, um, there's money and energy put into those programs. er advantages I mean it's kind of like what I said you know when you have to compete against someone else you actually have to give stuff so players want to pick you instead of somewhere else and that's why having all these leagues is certainly better for everyone, I think that's great and to your point I mean you know that treating soccer players as employees is important because a lot of soccer players or athletes haven't been seen as employees, right?
They're contract workers and and once their contracts expire, they leave their company or their program and emotionally, I understand that and obviously they know that people will respond and say what about free agency where those players have the right to go somewhere side. What happens to the boys who leave? the canadian soccer league and go somewhere else what about the players leaving the usfl and all of that is valid as well but i think the relationship between the league and t The players need to continue to get closer so they take better care of their employees and Trust me, at the front office the employees are well taken care of.
In many cases, these players are asking for the exact same thing and, to your point, about what is happening in the world of technology. I'm happy to see that in professional football or professional sports they are starting to see the fact that he listens. we need to attract talent and we need to keep talent while it's here and we also have an obligation to make sure that when that talent is no longer with us it's ready for the next phase of life so it's really great to see and there's more work to come. to do well this is not the end there is more work to be done but the progress that has been made has been great and again you know being close to cflpa in that situation I'm really very impressed by that and more important me I have seen several of my players who have retired being able to walk into retirement in a more comfortable position than ever before and that is really proof that being in the pudding is that players can now give themselves the skills and capabilities for later game pass uh last question for you today and just because we are going to continue our cfl talk with the rest of the guests uh tremendous cfl free agency i want to say that was very exciting see a lot of movement and stuff uh I mean if you can take off your agent hat just look you know the field of teams huh who you think won looks the best so far?
I'm really curious it's been fascinating so far to see what everyone is doing leading in the new season it's been exciting obviously it's possibly the most exciting time of the year um you know that's when we don't actually have game on the field . should bu t uh that's exciting too um you know I think challenges with winners and losers and free agency is understanding what the baseline was so you know some teams that maybe weren't as active didn't need be and that makes them a winner just the same way you know Kyle Walters and Winnipeg were able to sign most of their free agents before free agency was a big winner so when free agency starts and doesn't cause a big stir like others, maybe I'm giving it a different rating, nope. realizing the fact that he was able to keep most of the guys that he wanted to keep and maybe for a couple of holes that he had he filled them, um, obviously, listen, ottawa was free agency history because of the moves they made and the moves that they had to make it and obviously Sean Burke had established himself as somebody in this league with great integrity and great credibility and he showed that the players wanted to come play for him so it was exciting to see the same but in the end You know my belief.
It's that, at the end of the day, everybody thinks they've won and I don't disagree with that approach, you know, a lot of teams got very comfortable with who they signed and who didn't sign and who they retained. and who they let go now is usually the one who got away, there's a player you wanted to sign and he went somewhere else and maybe that's where the pain happens but I think at the end of this period everybody is going to come into the season believing they can win and that's what's exciting especially about the cfl is you know free agency gives teams the ability to reorganize pretty quickly it's not like some of the leagues where you need to do it through a draft process because the contracts are pretty short and frankly you can add players with other US draft processes anyway and it's also a league that has tremendous parity as far as you know going into the season if you were testing the handicap and i'm certainly not into sports betting. g world um, it would be hard for me to put a number on someone because the teams that were strong keep their strength and the teams that needed to reorganize will get equipped, so it's a good position to be in.
I love to see the free flow of money. I love seeing the money go back into players' pockets and I think that was the big win for me in all of this, it's been the players because they know the players went through a struggle last year where apparently we had minimum wage and you know By not spending to the cap we had imposed spending caps in the off-season and it was tough now this year we're seeing money go back where it should go to the players so I guess to better answer your question who won were the players. no, I agree with that and it's the best time of the year because everyone feels great on paper, as I feel great with bc, right, I know this Nathan Warwick experiment is going to work tremendously , right, we don't know yet, you know. ottawa edmonton i mean i do i feel like there is a lot of positive energy right now in the cfl i feel like compared to where i was last year when we jumped into all this and it was just a bunch of crazy and there seems to be a lot of good energy and vibrationsgoing in and players getting what they want so I think that's a great way to sum it up if you know the energy now is substantially different from the uncertainty that we were in and the kind of restrictions around spending and I got it okay, I mean, I understood that the owners were in a situation where there was uncertainty and they had a piece of their dollars that they didn't know if they would get back, now we have a situation where there is a little less uncertainty even though it's obviously a fluid situation. but obviously the teams were spending like it was an uncoveted prior year which was fantastic and um and the excitement around it and obviously you know there's a lot of talk about it you know you know they should be allowed one year contracts and it's good the free agency because players keep changing teams. agency to talk to whoever they want and if they want them they go there, um and uh, but I also think that having all this movement of players in free agency makes it fun to talk about, so I think they know that on the other hand it's you know , yeah, where maybe player a goes from team one to team two and you know maybe if you bought a jersey you can't wear it anymore, but at the same time you know it keeps the league on top, it certainly does for some fun discussions and again to me from a players point of view it helps put some money in their pockets and inevitably again most players can sign one year deals but a lot of guys will sign five straight one year deals a year with the same team. and stay there e yeah it's like monday night wars when people were skipping shipping oh my god that's what you know that's razor ramon what is he doing?
Thank you very much again for coming to share your time and knowledge. I really appreciate it. It's a pleasure. Thank you so much. My wife will be delighted with one today, along with many of our listeners. We have one from Winnipeg on the show. Brandon Alexander. How are they? you're doing it I'm doing wonderful how you're doing we're good this is good we're working our way through the teams you know we're close to bc because you know it's kind of like my my team but my wife's team is winnipeg we're in hamilton for you guys, you know, two mobs this year for the gray cup, uh, how has the last two months been since, uh, since your big win up there, um, it's calmed down a bit now, you know? uh basically you know you start getting ready for the new next season and everything but the past you know a couple of months since that day it's just been uh it's been love like it was just you know you can feel the atmosphere you can feel uh you know that the city is happy you I know everything is going well so you know since that day it's been pretty good it's been going pretty good and you know seeing guys and people you still know in Winnipeg can hang out with those guys and stuff, so yeah you are if you're interesting because you really only know success in cfo i mean you come in you know winnipeg win you win again uh any fear fear this year i mean it's like a three-legged bus, well, well, every year.
It has its own challenges, you know, we got there good, I got here in 2017, um, and we've been building from there. second round of the playoffs ending up getting bounced by Calgary, you know, and then in 2019, actually, we went all the way to 2021, we're done, so to be honest with you, you know this year you know any setbacks, you know we've got to go all the way through each year it's going through completely, but this year it definitely uh uh presents a lot of new challenges, you know, um and I never see it as a two-peat or three-peat uh or things like that. so because, for that to happen, you have to have the same team, you know, and especially in football, that's a rare case, you know there are guys here who have double or want to go for 3p but like As far as to a collective group, it is a new group, a new team, a new goal, a new atmosphere, the same goals, give me the same goal, a new atmosphere and new models. i want to play in winnipeg right i mean not just because you win but because you know we've heard a lot about the culture that's what it is and top down from ownership down uh what's it like to be a part of that club and that atmosphere with those guys?
I feel lucky. I know I feel lucky to be a part of this, you know, I'm thankful, I'm lucky to be a part of this because, I mean, it starts at the top, you know, it starts from, um, the general managers down to the owner and everything in between. . that and then they have to let our coach be our coach, you know, and with them doing that, you know, especially with coach o'shea, he lets the locker room be the locker room, you know we have a lot of good vets. uh that goes in and uh basically just order the team you know and uh you know move from there so when you have good veterans that can order a team and things and um things that have been established and built what they i've built that's on the ground you know it's the design this is the foundation every thing on top is pieces that have been added over the years but that design is something that's been here before i got here so that I'm just building on that you know everyone plays this game to win championships but to do that you know each and every year it's going to be a tough thing you have to get through so I'm excited for this year it's crazy how Winnipeg has created itself with this destination where players want to be, I mean, even the players you know take less money to come back just because they know you know they'll take good care of you, you're going to have a long career, hopefully he will win, but he only talks about I can't say enough about everyone involved with that and how hard they've worked to create that over the last two years, well let's be honest here, compared to a lot of other teams you know Winnipeg isn't really a big market, you know? um you know and especially as city-wise if you're just thinking of the city you would think of places like bc montreal toronto stuff like that you know the big market a lot of money comes in and you can know all that stuff but with winnipeg one thing about it you know maybe Don't be that, but I'll take the fans on anything you know.
I will take support over anything. gray mug you know um you can't replace that you know you can't replace that with new income you can't replace that with a better city you can't replace that with anything else so um you know besides that so is that's the main thing is that the city in herself with the people who belong here can push that, yes, no, it's something that I think is sometimes lost, right? I mean there's a lot of talk about players signing and moving and all this stuff you know w I had Jake Mayer in Calgary a couple of weeks ago and he said yeah I just like living in Calgary.
I know the city, the people you meet, I feel comfortable here and I think sometimes that is taken for granted, like we are. i like the fanbase i like it i know where it's all safe i can get to the same some you know it's backed sometimes how important it is now this is very important you know you want to be somewhere you feel comfortable you feel wanted you feel like you're close to family you know a lot of us come from you know the states and we come here and something this is a very new environment you know you have to be around people who really care and that's what i meant here in winnipeg here in winnipeg you know again city wise if you're trying to match you know things to do or whatever the case may not match a vancouver might not match a toronto may not match those but once plus, the fans are like supernaturally different, you know, uh, the feel, the atmosphere, you know, when you go to the games, it's just different, you know, um and uh, this is bigger than just having one good city, it's bigger than all those things have a lot to do with how much respect how much time they see we spend each and every year and are together with us.
I'm always curious when it comes to riding in free agency. and teams making moves obviously you know you're back with Winnipeg and then like when you see somebody come in or oh hey we know this guy re-signed I mean you gotta get excited you gotta be texting I text people and like oh hell yeah I mean what it's like to live that as a player you know to be happy where you are and see everyone else come back to your team I mean that says a lot says a lot about the organization , it says a lot about the coaches but it also says a lot about the pl ayers in that locker room too and what I want to say is you know from my time in football I've been blessed from high school to my professional years where I've been blessed with a lot of good veterans in our locker room you know and the vet set the tone for what the team is going to be like you know um and as I've seen it since I've been here in 2017 a lot of people want to come back you know um it's one of the coldest places in the world here s you know it's again you know city wise how to look at other places there may not be much to do here things like that why people want to come back is because of those vets it's because of the organizations why it was built and how it's going now and when they come into this locker room they feel the love and it's not just us it's just the city they feel they want them they feel they want to be here you know um and the organization wants to keep them that's so important you know um and uh I think that's the reason only vets here are just um they are they are they are great is there any doubt in the mind of anyone in that locker room right now that you guys are going to come back and be in saskatchewan here in november it was the 20th of November well no there's no question we'll play like we play every day you know I don't want to look too far into November but what I will say is again every year has its own challenges but when you first walk into camp I know is and then we have our comeback season this year so we'll start earlier in May instead of July so when you walk in you know the feeling might be like that. either this or this this is going to be some rough bumps on each side you're going to have those rough bumps but you can tell if you can build off of something on day one you know and um um yeah we're definitely going to be ready at the end of the day we still have a lot of core pieces, a lot of core guys here, um and w I've yet to meet the guys that have been there before you know it and, um, they're all ready to go so, in as far as november i'll say this each and every week we're going to make sure that we're on our toes on our p's and q's to make sure that we can at least give ourselves a chance to make the game come out right because that it's what you know I mean win you don't want to be complacent you have to keep building and it still is you know it's hard to go hungry when you're the top dog you know what it is I'm fascinated to see what the other teams do this year for counteracting women doing it just because it's been such a thing for the last two seasons you know good if you want to take 19 19 was a little bit of a different story you know we had a lot of hard times in the middle uh we caught fire towards the middle of the season and we're done, you know, uh taking it to the playoffs and then you see 2021, uh, we kind of were, you know, day in and day out, weekend, week off you just know win games and stuff so that's two completely different seasons, you know, and one has nothing to do with the other, you know, so this next year will be the same, you know it will have the last ones. two seasons has nothing to do with what happens this year you know i think the only thing about it is that it's even more of a target on our back now you know um and again i don't see it as a 3p or anything So. that but everyone knows what happened last season and they're ready to ramp it up so we're going to have to be ready to ramp it up before I let you go I want to talk about you know what you don't know the field right we were talking about your ep before you came but i want to hear it because right the fans love you guys right the cfl fans love the players they want you know they want to know all that stuff so talk to me about the music. thing and then kind of what you doing now before you know february here before we get into the season uh well music i uh dropped my album august um last year uh sorry not my album my ep and um it had six songs and it was my first time uh putting everything you know and um uh i finally got to understand that it's been waiting for me for a while because you know i was a little nervous about putting things down and stuff but when i took it out it was like a relief, you know, and I actually started to dive into it in 2019, you know, and actually, I have another ep excuse me coming out soon in the next few weeks, you know, and this will be my second, so I came out with an ep called two faces and um it's on spotify apple music youtube anywhere you want to go check it out and um yeah man i was just excited about it and you know it goes you know it's a uh a way for me express me youryou know uh how i want and um you know go from there just so you know and then february i've been i've been here for i've still been here and i haven't come home yet and um the weather is uh different it's actually warmer you know uh now so it's been you know in the last couple of weeks so um you know i've been it's kind of crazy that i'm saying i'm from florida yeah well that's what i was going to say it's a little different weather than orlando he's going to say i want say you know you get some of these guys and okay I'm whatever you know I'm from Seattle I'm going to BC or whatever but I want to say you know it's a big difference going from Orlando to Winnipeg I'm literally going from one extreme heat to another extreme. cold it doesn't even make sense but to be honest I enjoy it anywhere I go it allows me to be a little more creative you know I think I've done a lot more songs here like well you know just uh watching a different atmosphere i actually love snow and it seems like you can feel it's winter you can feel l like christmas you can feel it's new year you know um so i'm just i'm happy man i'm happy i'm excited uh being around the boys i'm excited you know this season is coming i'm excited for my new ep to be out i'm excited for a lot of different things and yeah well your excitement i mean it radiates through right i mean it really does and i think that this is so an exciting time for the cfl and all the free agency signings and you know everyone it seems like people are getting paid and teams are being formed and you know the whole last year was crazy you know I'm sure Or that I don't need to tell you how crazy last year was, but you seem to know a lot of excitement, you know I'm glad we were able to have some people from Winnipeg here and yes, we'll know we'll follow them throughout the season, that's good it sounds good i appreciate you having me and again don't go watch that ep you know and like i said i have a lot more com ing i should be uh i'm going to have a lot of projects especially this year You know, and I'll just let it slide, you know, I've got over 60 70 songs that haven't been released, you know, so um, yeah, I am. very excited i'm very excited about it and i'm very excited to see our guys again we're like i'm not mistaken i did a radio show and uh what we are 96 95 days now from camp if you think about it it's not really so far so you know I'm super excited man and yeah I appreciate you having me awesome well yeah like I say anytime I think players can express themselves however you know. not in the right field to have creative projects whatever that's why I always ask about it because it's like you have to have that release and you have to have that way of being creative and showing your personality to the fans so I think it's cool, yeah, there's a couple of guys here that do that.
You know I'm, uh, I'm a Don Jackson fan. Going back to Hamilton, you know I'm a fan of his and I remember when I was playing for Calgary and I was coming out with his songs, he put out two albums now, you know I believe and you know I believe. he's a very, very talented artist, you know, so I like to see him do his thing as well while he's here, you know, and I know deron carter was playing a little bit of that, you know, a while back, um and uh also uh tuggle tuggle He also raps a lot so, you know, I'm, I'm, I've got my, you know, my will and things like when I see everyone else you know start doing that too and it motivates me.
I do what I do and I have a lot of friends at home who play, who used to play ball, but now they rap and stuff and they're doing the same thing, so you know, I appreciate those guys and they support me. it's going absolutely great brandon thank you so much again and really best of luck this season i appreciate it man thanks well i'm tremendous so excited today we have neil mcavoy as co-general manager and director of soccer operations for team america the alliance bc how are you doing today im good yeah thanks for inviting me on this is exciting glad we can finally hook up its nice that we can hook up on the podcast uh i mean it when i ask if theres ever been a more exciting time to be involved with the bc lions and something like last you know omar doman coming in all the big moves this whole year feels exciting yeah you know what's exciting?
The soccer league has been around for a long time, the national soccer league, but I'm excited as you meet a person who has been working in professional soccer since the early 90s, providing opportunities for many other players. and the staff members and to come together and you know create this great game and give more excitement for the North American fans huh it's good and you've been with the lions I mean for a long time right I mean I was reading I mean how has been spend I mean a good chunk of your professional career directly involved in this organization that in this league yeah uh I've been with the lions basically since 1996.
So man I've worked in all sorts of different capacities from ticketing to administration, You know where I am today so hey pro football is a rollercoaster and always has been a rollercoaster in Canada and probably always will be but you know we're just going to put our feet on the ground and do the best we can to keep producing good good football teams winning football and exciting football seems like you know from an outside fan here watching this and podcasting about it seems like the command o Came from the top high th is just the year we want to make some big moves, right, Michael Riley?
You know, retire. We have Nathan Rourke here. cfl free agency and the renewals before that yeah good question we had last year we had a young football team and at the beginning of the year we really liked where we were um and then we hit a wall midway on the way. the year and I think that's what happens when you have young guys who aren't used to playing the full 14 games, it's usually 18 games, so this year when we started talking about the agency we felt like we had to supplement the group. that we already have we like the group that we have we like the young guys that we have now we're going to have to complement those guys and I think through free agency we can do that with michael retiring one of the things that we had confidence in is nathan is coming here for the year michael giving us the thumbs up saying hey nathan is the guy he is he is making this decision easier for him because nathan was so um professional throughout the 2021 season and prepared like he was going to be the starter and it takes a certain athlete and a certain mentality to be able to do that and so at the end of the day when uh michael felt that uh leaving this team in good hands with nathan would uh you know what would be the best for him and the best for the club that you know we were all safe and happy to move on and free agency i think we liked the law we liked all the guys we brought in they are really going to help us where we were we brought It's the players we needed where we felt we were lacking so I'm excited about 2022 and the start so to see exactly what we have it's something about Nathan he was on the show last week just a confidence You know, young, very confident. a lot of skill I mean are th There's intangibles there that you can't you know obviously you can't teach it seems like he really has the whole package here coming at such a young age yeah to be honest this is the first time that not only everything that he's a great young man throw like you're out or coming if you came to our training camp last year and you saw the quarterback from ohio everyone says he's always canadian you wouldn't have known he's canadian you would just know he looks like a quarterback Really good field player who played college in Ohio, that's it, and those intangibles and the fact that he was able to work well with Michael throughout the year and work well within the organization as the number two guy who is not a easy position to be in and this is the first time I've been with the team since, like I said, the 1996 season that we've had a quarterback who actually lives here, not only is he Canadian but lives in the Vancouver market. is working with you Meet our community relations group with all the things you want in a leader that he is and so I'm excited about the future with him because he ticks all the boxes and knows that at the end of the day professional football is it's about victories. and losses and going out on the field and playing and we understand all of that but so far those intangibles that he has should know that they include winning because he has all the tools to do that uh confidence also bring in michael o'connor right i I mean it's great that we have another Canadian.
You know it's the first time. Know. Jim Mullen is happy to point out. You know it's like the first time in a million years there's been a two. quarterback with michael too, yeah, and again, we had michael o'connor as a sports player at our training camp for three years in a row and if you had come to our training camp at those times you would have said hey look that quarterback there h He seems like a really good player, regardless of his background, regardless of where we said, we could have said he's from Penn State. the school itself michael is going to bring some experience that nathan could have nathan is going to help mike cloud and have two canadian quarterbacks if one of them goes down it fits the bill with him not changing his ratio as you know with the league Canadian football ratio is a big thing so when someone goes down you don't want to trade too many pieces and have those guys and it's going to be a competition we're going to bring in more quarterbacks we're saying that Nathan is the guy that we like Michael as number two but hey the other two guys or three other guys we'll bring in if they're better and help us win football games.
Guess who will be those guys who will guide us into the future? exci Ting too obviously you know fan favorite Lucky White Head is coming back. You know he was on our show right after he signed on. uh, brian burnham was fine. on the field i mean the thoughts behind keeping the receiving core yeah not just the core of the football team like lucky whitehead when we brought him in last year he was a freshman kid to us and he was such a dynamic personality on and off the pitch and obviously his game on the pitch speaks for itself but off the pitch a great young man in the community working well with a lot of people and therefore keeping that whole core group for a young man quarterback that we felt was going to be a key to him and a key to our football team, so I'm excited for those guys. it's going to compete for those s boats as well so we've got a good group of receivers dominique grimes a great receiver you know we'll just add to the depth that we already have so at the end of the day unfortunately now there's only one ball of football, uh, nathan.
I'm going to have to decide who gets it, yeah I mean it really is like this wealth of riches, you know? Enter here now. orange hat uh just look through you know other teams are making moves. Anyone else surprised you or made you curious about teams making moves across the country. Don't you know other teams? I don't know what they're doing until we played them to be honest obviously I see the transactions but yeah I mean it's hard to gauge what other teams are doing because you're not in the room you don't know exactly what their needs are you know teams from football like life we have personalities we have things that happen within our organization that people outside the organization just don't know about and all organizations are like that so they have to make moves that are going to better complement the team in the future, do you surprised?
I guess the competitiveness of hitting some of the receivers, as I know it's been reported. You know he was trying to get Kenny Waller. Luck, why did he have what? I guess he was player friendly, maybe free agency was this year. they demand, uh, you know, a good negotiating process and so we start free agency week by talking to a bunch of those guys and we feel like we should get our core group of receivers back together and then if we can complement them with, um , a high price for the agencies we could, but, um, we were happy with the group we had before they brought anyone else in and it turns out that when we lost a couple of guys, we were able to put that money elsewhere to help us out at other direct positions so we're excited and happy and how free agency worked out for us, what you talked about, you know, hitting the wall, yeah, some of the young guys in the middle of last season, you know, for the fan base that is excited with me, what would you say about them?
Are you looking forward to this year? The optimism, yes, I think you know our group is only a year older, as I tell my staff all the time. no, no, don't lookwhat the player did last year because that was his freshman year he's going to come to training camp a much better player so all those young guys we had last year um they're going to come to training camp knowing what's going on all the time that we had we had guys who had never been to canada never been to a professional stadium before and you know you walk into um saskatchewan and 37,000 screaming football fans hating on you guess what that is a problem for a lot of these guys so it took us a little bit of time to gel and then we gel and then like i said i think we hit the wall playing saskatchewan again at home we lost a game with zero seconds left when they scored if we had won that football game, you know who knows what?
It would have happened so you know all the guys that we had last year coming back are going to be in their second year and those guys are going to be a lot better and I hope this team is a lot better because of the positions that you already know we added, yeah, it really feels like that was the turning point of the season. I remember coming home and watching that game and it was absolutely heartbreaking and then there was like Calgary losing there, I mean, us. i need T account all that but there was a bit of gross towards the end yes i like football it's an energy level game and if you lose energy it's like a boxing match or mma fight if you lose energy it's over and we lost our energy for a second, they got the momentum and then we could never get the momentum back the rest of the year and unfortunately that's how professional football is and that's why it's one of the best sports out there obviously last year in the off-season , a lot of you guys know there's other stuff going on and I mean obviously we're still in the pandemic but you know, the xfl related talks and delayed starts and stuff, how nice is power as normal as we can in these times, sort of, doing business as normal, signing, practicing, and everything, yeah, not just exactly, even training camp, I'm just looking at the training camp schedule this morning and seeing all the things You know we had to go through the first year with protocols and covid, and you know, it's amazing that we actually started the season and then we were able to finish when we did because, in early December, it seems like things got a little bit tough for all those other leagues like Well it's exciting to get back to normal football and not have to do with all the hopefully not have to do with all the pandemic stuff we've dealt with last year so I'm excited, but you already know. kick off and go here uh last question for me is there uh directive type of motto theme that we are working with this year i want to say what is what is your word to the players and staff and everyone i want to say what is it that we are really trying to do towards this year as well as our organization we need to take the next step and the next step is to win more football games and we know we believe we have the team to do it we have a great group of guys who get along well and so that's the first step to building a football team and having them gel but at the end of the day we have to win games you know we have to win you know when you play a place bc in the middle you know late late early early 2000's mid 2000's the 2000s you came to bc plays you weren't winning and we have to get that mentality back and so in recent years we've been a better away team and I think if we continue to be a good away team and we protect our home and be a good home team then things will play out and we'll be you know a better football team for that neil i really appreciate your time and come over and chat a bit bc alliance always excited you know, it seems like every other week here we have bc people so i really appreciate that and i mean obviously best of luck moving forward i mean there's a lot of i we have all over america right i told nathan last week you have the america's hopes and dreams on your shoulders you're heading the scene yeah good luck to you and good luck to us and i hope to talk to you again thanks ok i appreciate it well we have my good friend now best friend after hang out in the gray cup daryl davis canadian football hall of fame reporter on the show how are you mr big reid nice to see you yes it's been a few months ago we closed a couple of uh hospitality suites at gray cup and hamilton closed and you know, and it's going to feel like this is a good kind of cfl news week.
What's going on? Good, i supouse. We were talking off camera, but the big news is that Derek Taylor is retiring. kinda haven't talked to dt since he left derek's been here three years i think working as the play by play guy for the badass bikers which is a prestigious job when you think about it there's only nine in canada so it's a top notch job and he had patched things up with his family pretty well they were both working together at different stations in regina different media outlets and derek did a good job huh why he's leaving hasn't been

revealed

but like we said the buzz coming out of winnipeg is hall of fame broadcaster bob irving is what 47 48 years of being the winnipeg blue bombers play-by-play guy could be a pretty good job for someone like derek taylor who has worked in winnipeg before uh obviously you know he's pretty well known across the country he could move there.
I'm going to ask him as soon as I can, as soon as I get the chance, but that would be a good gig for Derek because he'd just have to do play by play and maybe once a week or so he'll do an open line show many years ago. open line shows at her concert in regina ckrm is in charge of the open line show every day which cuts her time and we both know what stats fanatic is so incapable of doing those stats probably g check it out and you know winnipeg is a market bigger regina is the smallest market in canadian soccer league so if you start here and work your way up you'll make more money everywhere you go that's exciting I was looking at some other exciting stuff here too uh the hiring of tonya walter in bc, well, get the coach involved in it, any thoughts on that and, you know, continue to grow that whole canadian soccer league aspect, well, it's about time, you know? nfl sets that bar a little bit earlier than cfl and quite often the cfl sets the bars first but its good for the cfl for trying to catch up there are womens soccer leagues all over the country um and many of these good players are training. i am coaching high school teams many of them across the country helping regina amanda rule is helping coach the strength and conditioning coach i think of mcmaster so they know they are getting on board a little is it will take a time because soccer hasn't traditionally been a sport that a lot of women have played, but because there are more opportunities, they're learning the game physically, they're all you know, we have to be fair on that. one, they're going to have trouble physically keeping up with the men right now, you know there are some kickers who have tried to go pro in college, the college wrote, but physically they probably won't be able to play, maybe one day, but right now they're not capable of playing in the Canadian soccer league and, uh, but they're certainly capable of learning the game and coaching it and, uh, passing their knowledge on to soccer players across the country at many different levels, from high school to college. and now the pros are good for the bc lions to start uh yeah i mean anytime you're going to do that and you know it's good for bc i mean we are big fans of bc yeah ok ok ok i forgot, yes team america. true hey wai t a minute and i also saw that you heard saskatchewan rough riders as your least favorite team so maybe i should pop this on twitter a bit so i can try to redeem you among the riders fans for me. never mind i don't root for anyone i don't root for anyone but i know you'll cause a big ruckus in this province reid i lost i actually lost a couple of supporters over it because it didn't my least favorite were the teams that are more close to my heart and so we work together a lot, like that baker, on this very show, you're going to be, uh, neil mcavoy is on the show talking, you know signatures uh, you know, moose we've worked on, you know that we've had the uh we had uh james wilder jr you know that was something there so we're just going down the road we've never had anybody uh cody fajardo leading quarterback for the saskatchewan roughriders has us blocked on twitter because i know you know so i mean t here it is you know there are a lot of factors that go into this besides who my least favorite team is ok but you better be able to explain because i'm sure you'll They will tackle people who are jumping. and engaging with you on social media they don't let things like that go lightly in saskatchewan you know pretty well you don't do it well anymore i'll have my guns on when we get there in november so we have we got the last airbnb that was available, you know i'm going to try to get into the reporter suite but yeah i have my we have the but you know who knows the world i got the last airbnb in regina that weekend so we're all set it's not a place really big so I think there are only two yeah it's not much huh and by the way we'll reserve a spot for you.
We still have hotels booked for Canadian soccer reporters. We are going to charge you. your membership dues of 40 and then you can get a reservation at a fancy regional center hotel well that would be great too we'd take that yeah we need to have a space so I like to plan ahead and we can reimburse you but if We can go into that suite, it would be ideal, you have it and it's free. beer also goes with the territory right it doesn't hurt huh i want to know what you think about y'know the victor cui it's all good coming into edmonton you know what we're doing edmonton the alberta golden bears are right to do this partnership seems like a big deal getting free publicity that way thoughts on that ok the university of alberta golden bears i don't think they played at commonwealth stadium for like 30 years 1994 i think it was last time they were there it's this beautiful big stadium uh you know in alberta the varsity team has their own uh stadium on the other side of town so cross marketing is a great idea you know we talked about the cfl and how it's not important for me to support grassroots soccer canada's secret the best cfl teams are the ones with the best canadians so you have to have canadian players on it how do you do it right? you make sure to promote canadian football high school college football football and most of these teams do but they do, obviously there's a separation quite often, you know, if the saskatchewan rough riders are home on a sunday, so they try to keep the regina rams university from playing at the same time but why not? spawn and cross pollinate a little bit football fans can see things if i go to a ram game on a saturday i might not be as excited as i go to a jockey game on a sunday but if they back then i might say you know what i'm here anyway let's stick around and enjoy it and i think this is a great plan uh the alex from edmonton they are they are going to be at the forefront of marketing for the cfl for years to come as i love the new president with his little videos with his mom yeah some great stuff on twitter who is trying new things that makes you feel like you're attached to the team and that's important in the cfl so why don't rams? your post said well why not have the junior teams like there is a junior team in saskatoon the city about 150 miles from regina and uh and the legendary sassatune hilltops win the national championship almost year after year not last year but uh, winning it frequently and pr prairie thunder on regina junior team so why not have them play as an afternoon game and then have the university of saskatchewan huskies play the regina college rams at the mid afternoon game and then have regina or the saskatchewan rudos play anything? like the winnipeg blue bombers after a triple header you never used to be able to do that on real grass fields it reads good because i would be all torn up but now with grass the way it is you can do that and you can empty out the people or you can let them join in for a full day of football.
You know there's a price - staying there all day, taking a taxi home afterwards - but I think it's a great idea to get something like that. started we've talked about it before and I think it would work with all markets to at least give it a shot and good on the moose for giving it the first chance. Well,It almost looks like the moose is going to leave everyone else in the dust now with a lot of their marketing ideas, I mean, it almost feels like you're bringing the supercharge, you know like a mega genius right? this is just the first day I mean he's been in office for a week and I mean like seven days you know it will be I mean if this is just I'll be curious to see here you know come back and talk to me at continuation. year at this point and we'll see i mean maybe they lost everyone else in the dust yeah they m could have but you know uh all leagues are copycat leagues if something works by somebody they will to try, the moose are trying something new, it's the mom and pop stuff and that's what you know when saskatchewan badass writers were maybe they didn't sell as many tickets but they're always thought of as a mom and pop organization, TRUE?
They are owned by the community. Edmonton aids are community owned. They want to pay off the blue bombers. They are owned by the community. so sometimes you feel like you're part owner and teams like to make you think that way, not realizing that millions and millions of profits are being made, but if you feel like you own or are part of the team that moose is doing now and their new president is doing a wonderful job, I think that builds goodwill and they've been misbehaving on the field lately. They cut their longtime team manager, Dwayne Mandruziak. before last year I just didn't have a real connection to the community, that's what they're trying to get back.
I don't know if the badass writers ever really lost that and I'm pretty sure the Winnipeg blue bombers never really lost it so it's a nice way to go but not just for community owned teams you know , the toronto argonauts having pinball clemons there also gives them that community feel so the hamilton tiger cats are pretty good at that even though they are privately owned. bob young the owner calls himself is the caretaker because he's just taking care of the team for the people who actually own it, which is the fans, and i think that's a great thing, you know, maybe it's not great marketing, it's not like Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, but I'm part of this community, I'm part of this football community and there's this great bond that you found that I'm sure you've noticed that at Gray Cup everyone feels like a big family and when you start doing that, I think it's them. are you more willing to come buy tickets buy the concessions buy the merchandise and really be a part of it and it's a great way to reconnect with the community uh no absolutely i want to talk about his saskatchewan too or saskatchewan i always say uh you know this andrew harris right me ' I'm reading that he was talking about even though he was never going to go to Saskatchewan right now, he's in Toronto. like everyone i want to talk to is like a mega star right i mean it really is like the la rams here you know where we got andrew harris and brandon banks and all this stuff i mean thoughts on andrew harris all the democal not the boss oh, you know he looked good last year remember he was hurt last year they kept them away and talked down to them because they were messing with the salary cap everyone in Winnipeg says no he was hurt he was really hurt. on the roster for how long and then he was fresh and powerful and dominated in the playoffs for an older guy that's the way you do it you know you see that happen in hockey fair with the vegas golden knights they're doing it with Mark stone now they are hiding him on the long term injury replacement list so they don't have to pay uh uh salary during the regular season and nikita they did it with kucherov the tampa bay lightning a few years ago you hide these guys too and you don't I don't have to pay them during the regular season and I think that's really stealing from the fans, the fans should start saying, okay, I'm not going to buy season tickets, but I'm going to buy playoff tickets because that's all the big stuff so they tried it and it worked because andrew harris is a great player you still know him gushing but can he play an 18 game season probably not like your best runner?
So a lot of teams including the winnipeg blue bombers realize he can't make it all the way through a season that they saw last year but he can make it in fits and starts and he has a lot of big name potential and when you look at all the guys the toronto argonauts are getting, they've got this big name, big playing potential, big name recognition, big toronto needs that if you're in toronto you can't, you can't play second fiddle to anybody you The only thing you know is that they had doug flutie, the greatest player of all time in the canadian football league, playing for them, the crowds were slightly bigger, but you really have to be a put your name in the spotlight and that's what they're trying to do in toronto, good for them, i approve, they probably have some money, they need to do that to get people out, does andrew harris have enough to get them out? no but he can be part of a big puzzle and i think that's what they're doing they're putting together an offense and a defense um uh with brandon banks too right he can do it a little bit but he's not the same great player which used to be uh they are pros He probably got it for a little less than he wanted as I'm sure Andrew Harris got a little less than he wanted but it sounds like when you talk to Pinball Clemens the team president you think he loves me thats how pinball is and he convinced them to go there and its quite a collection huh winnipeg burned bridges with andrew harris ok maybe a little bit but how many football marriages end happily not many right?
There are very few guys who just turn around and say go away and say you've been amazing my whole career I have to spend here I appreciate it I'm going to retire and go away and both parties are happy it doesn't happen very often everyone thinks they have a little bit left year andrew harris may have a year left but he's not going to be the same player he was it's good for the league that he's moved to another place remember he started in bc because he's from vancouver island so it's not bad to move them there it gives that team some reckoning.
Maybe it also creates a bit of a rivalry with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and I don't think anyone should really be upset. We always say that it is a wonderful game, but a bad business, a difficult business. right sense you got toronto and it's like god anything they could do they get any kind of likes i mean i know the tough ones but to get any kind of thing right if we're going to put this together as a mega team of all the stars Here I want to say that I don't think it's terrible, it's not like they're obviously recruiting a team for that, but I think it's certainly a nice by-product if that's, oh actually, we might have some big stars here that people want to come to see. right, you know when, uh, when Rocket Ismail played the CFL, they went to Toronto, right, that's the only place they could probably hide it or pay for it, so it's worth trying once in a while, sometimes it doesn't work. i know we just went through the free agent market here the big free agent signings rarely change the flow of what's going on in the canadian soccer league.
I know that Ottawa added a group of players. you're a championship going out and spending a ton of money on a really talented free agent you have to win because of your draft picks and making sure you have a quarterback who knows what he's doing so uh what he's doing toronto i agree with you reid is good for the league i like the fact that there is some attention that people in toronto maybe paying a little more attention huh and he is the center of the universe so why shouldn't we all pay attention to the center of the universe that's the old joke you know you've heard that certain psn yeah travel sports networks just so you know that's the way we always joke if we don't live in toronto we always say im afraid to ask you you fight in the club about the thompson elite quarterback in toronto i'm not sure i said that last year that you know they're going back and forth who their starter is i don't know he's not elite but you know what he looks through the league a and there's some elite quarterback mike riley was the best bowlley retired for mitchell maybe still a jump but he's fading big right has a couple of years left maybe it can sound like another good year um jeremiah masoli free agent lo they let go dana evans he's a superstar not really huh zach coleros two good years in winnipeg he's winning but he's one of the best quarterbacks i've ever seen no cody fajardo not many of these guys 10 or 12 years ago none of the ones i do no i think none of these guys write it down even mike riley last year at state they had at the ability they showed last year 12 years ago none of them would have started in the canadian football league had better quarterbacks ever teams than there were last year across the board i In the Canadian Soccer League, so is Macleod Bethel Thompson, an elite quarterback.
No, he's in the middle of the pack of a middle-of-the-pack quarterback group. kind of in the gray cup and it looks the same way when you know 15 20 years ago there were these superstar quarterbacks they're all in the hall of fame and 10 years ago 12 years ago there were still some good Henry Burris of the world that he's a hall of famer too but right now you know mike riley is going to michael riley is going to the hall of fame i think i'm a hall of fame voter so i'm thinking i'm se i'm not supposed to talk about how i vote that's one of the things but i think he has the credentials i think right now bo levi mitchell has the credentials and i think zach calleros after back to back gray cup is building his credentials to be a hall of famer, but he's actually a superstar quarterb Ack I don't think so, he's done the right thing in Winnipeg, he's played great, he's fit the bill perfectly and he did exactly what he was asked to do, but he doesn't have the abilities that those boys they had you 12 15 years ago which is really funny because in every other league the players you say are getting better and getting stronger but not in the canadian football league the quarterback is getting much weaker than in decades past and thats not me just being a hindsight guy i realize at the other positions these guys are better offensive lineup is better running backs are better receivers are better dbs are better quarterbacks are no better where they have gone Gone all the good CFO quarterbacks now that would be what would get me that's a good sign we've had that discussion quite a bit and maybe I thought you might have been on this in one of the w we worked out all the issues on this in the football report as a canada hospitality suite and we had that discussion where has everybody gone you know and it seems like the quarterbacks that used to get to the cfl the m guys who could run and shoot are now playing into this in the nfl because they no longer just need lagging quarterbacks, they have opened up their own positions to need, trust, and thrive on quarterbacks who play with the game from cfl they are running and pitching you know they will run and gun every way and that's why the good guys are going to the United States to play in the NFL now because they are needed and the best so the best are there , obviously, why wouldn't you be for millions upon millions a year when you're up here?
If you make C$500,000 a year that's a great salary but you get more being a backup or even a third stringer in the NFL so I think that's where the good quarterbacks have gone and it's unfortunate so maybe maybe the nf, the cfl will have to do it, we don't know the solution, that's if they're going to ask me how they fixed it, I don't know. let's think of something though maybe next gray cup we'll figure it out well i just remember vividly when in 2020 when they were announcing the xfl teams and whatever and they're the quarterbacks and they said you know what no 32 good quarterbacks yeah i mean elite whatever you know i mean the nfl struggles to find elite quarterbacks so you know that will derail to the cfl or xfl or the usfl or whatever i mean still wrestling with that in the nfl yeah yeah oh yeah not that many you know they're great college quarterbacks but remember those great college running backs throwing college quarterbacks they turn them into defensive backs very often just in the nfl some of them came all the way to canada uh and so th They could play quarterback in the canadian football league.
You know Kerry Joseph was a defensive back for the Seattle Seahawks and ended up winning a gray cup for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders as their quarterback.quarterback because he wanted to play quarterback, so he went back to the CFL. uh, but now those quarterback guys, yeah, isn't that what patrick mahomes is? i think the game is changing not as good as he is there is a demand for his type of quarterback well if you are as good as him yes but that type of quarterback they are not looking for that type anymore huh i could talk to you for hours here i obviously have to know keep it uh i guess my last question for you today and this is just to get to this on the news what the hell happened to will ferrell wearing the bc lions jersey in the super bowl and like what i don't understand and i just saw i get tagged a bunch because you know they're like oh read this but how come i don't get that notoriety when i wear my bc stuff?
How many million dollar movies have you been in? You say I mean how was that? Well, he's Canadian, he was born in Canada, yes, and so is ryan reynolds, okay, sure, and uh, I guess I forgot that will ferrell is Canadian. I will keep in mind? I better check that one out but I thought I would know uh no you know who I'm thinking of no he was born in Irvine California. ryan reynolds is canadian yes ryan reynolds is canadian um um um well we had tom hanks in the gray cup in regina in uh 2000 and when was last year 2013 uh who was his friend uh canadian martin shorts and he brought it so you know that there's always that dynamism of having uh the cfl and you know it's always been this little click that thinks it's special to be a cfl fan and i apologize for thinking well sir i have to blend in with another i have to blend in with another high profile comedian i dont remember who is uh who was born in canada you would be surprised when you start looking up list of stars hollywood star list how many people were born in canada and i apologize for making a mistake on will ferrell but that's only if you know somebody says hey my friend is ryan reynolds i'm going to show him that i know who the bc lions are and they're obviously team america i mean i just don't think there's ever been a hotter time for is for the bt alliance right now exactly and that burnt orange how many teams how many teams have burned orange i'll tell you they're releasing the usfl jerseys like we recorded well they've been releasing one everywhere i've been seeing oh god we sure captivate a lot of red, not much burnt orange, no, that's what I mean. there's a blue one there's like a purple orange the one with the mauler is like a bowling shirt but all the rest are a lot of reds so yeah and very few teams go green isn't it because they didn't prove a few years ago that the green is it? a docile color so that they do not want to have green in many of the sports uniforms, well, do not tell him that in sight this is like the best of both worlds because this is almost like I just realized this is almost like my bc lions elks jersey is the dragons because i got the orange and green so there you have to add some wild colors to them and you know i just noticed i was like watching the san jose sharks the other night they have a little bit of yellow or gold in their stripes , so when you add that extra color, it gives you a lot of options in terms of merchandising.
I guess the Rough Riders have been green and white forever and they sell more merchandise than all the other Canadian Football League teams so I guess who needs that extra color right? Thank you very much for taking the time today. We'll help you do more cfl stuff, but yeah, I want to say clearly that we'll see each other next year, but hopefully we'll see each other sooner. so you know virtually i'll save your spot you better book your flight to regina we only have like one or two a week coming here oh my god ok well we're working on it we're working on it uh i put one down and then but yeah let's talk outside line ok ok no problem good to see you we have judd roberts here ex edmonton for many years uh dad also played in the cfl jed glad to have you today how are you doing im very well thank you for hosting me well so you know it's nice to have ex edmonton you know royalty here now because i was a famous edmonton moose fan edmonton football team we went through all that stuff huh we switched allegiances to the bc lions but there are a lot of things that seem to be drawing me back to edmonton hey yeah what are you doing now how is your life oh it's going well you know i work as a child and youth care worker for an organization called maple tre e consulting um and it's a labor of love working with at risk youth it's something i've been doing off and on for 30 years i can whistle while i work which is amazing you know i went to college to become a teacher from English and it's not really where I ended up doing you know I migrated over to what I'm doing right now as I was gaming I was doing this as an off-season job towards the end of my career and then I was lucky enough to find something that I'm just as passionate about as I was when i played football so it's uh it's great you know never never a dull day i'll tell you you know what happened last season just with the cfl heading into this year how it was you know edmonton had some problems, right, now there seems to be a lot of goodwill and enthusiasm with each What Happened?
How was last year for you? Well, it was hard. Know? I think here in Edmonton we took a lot of things for granted. 1990 to 2002 I never missed the playoffs once uh now conceded in '99 we beat the saskatchewan rudos three times we only had six wins but that was enough for us to be in the playoffs that year like this That wasn't without our close shaves. but that's something here in Edmonton that I think you know goes back to the '70s and '80s, you know we were winning five breaks in a row and that's something that people around here are just an expectation, you know, and last season was very difficult but when you look back you take a step back and you're looking at it on a macro level every team in this league has gone through dry spells like that we just don't do that here in Edmonton so I mean, I I'd be lying to you if I know If I wasn't, you know if I was okay with that, I wasn't, I was, I was even quite vocal there towards the end before the last incarnation of the executive, you know, the front office, you know, in the team there. when they were showing the door there and then uh you know victor quake walked in and just um just electrified people in a short time that he's been in uh man it's been like the difference between you know looking in black and white and seeing the 3D stuff, you know, looking through an oculus lens, you know this guy just brings us, uh, brings us right into the 21st century approach to marketing his fan-focused approach, uh, you know, just connecting and being more of a community like we're a community owned team but it seemed like in the last 15 years we've just kind of moved away from that and tried to be more like the greasers which is owned by a guy you know and he's taking all decisions but it's hard to have that approach when you have a board of directors and shareholders to report to i think with a guy like victor who has an understanding i mean you have to understand too See this guy used to run a billion dollar company and I have no idea what I mean I know why he's here he's family oriented and he's got his dad that he's taking care of and stuff but we're very, very lucky to have him I'm just thinking you know we're grateful and from my perspective as a former player and and just a member of the community I'm just enjoying the ride you know and I just hope he sticks around for a while I think we've got it for a while but i think we're going to see some really cool stuff coming up and just the last day or two it announced the partnership with you to have a game there and you know that's the kind of thing and it's so simple it's not We're not trying to reinvent the wheel and you know I mean we're just trying to create a buzz in the team and when you've got a guy doing it it's a commitment like that talking to people joking back and forth on twitter that's the 21st century to yeah it's how you market a team you look at the teams and the nba and the teams in the nfl and you know i don't even like the top tier echo on teams even the teams that are trending on social media like the teams of minor leagues and things like the savannah bananas, you know, like uh marketing, you know, like minor league baseball, all those teams do one thing really well and that's commit, um and just create a buzz and that's the kind of excitement and fan awareness that a guy like victor brings to the table so i'm really excited i mean it was hard for a while there but i'm not a guy who tends to dwell in the past i'm more of a let's enjoy what we have here at the moment and that's what we have now and a guy like victor we're cute i think we're forced to do some cool stuff again next time it's ok because you know in life we're so used to the D exceptions, right? or the things that don't work here, you know, because now he's in good hands with you. people in positions where they can make a difference and that's just exciting where it's not like you meet the people who maybe weren't passionate about everyone before, it's nice to see that it feels like things are like going into a good jigsaw puzzle place your puzzle piece the way it's supposed to be it fits much better now it seems so i agree i think if you're a front office guy looking to get into pro sports franchise or even a guy who is a social media person or someone who is looking for you know to get into that kind of arena uh um the cfl is a great place to start you know and have the ability to bring an order um set if you want the league basically bring them to the present. know a and there are some teams that do it better than others and I think that's the last type of a lot of these teams are operating with that, you know, mandated to put people in the stands because I don't have the big TV deal and I don't see any reason why we can't have a great TV deal.
I know we're in lockdown for a while but I think what's required is thinking outside the box you know and No I think people like to talk about the negatives oh the league is too small it has two teams with the same name for so long and that's the bush league blah blah blah I think it's Canadian sometimes we don't. I don't tend to realize how good we have it here you know I mean something as fundamental as healthcare up to the mountains we have right in front of us here in alberta you know this is a beautiful place to be in a great big league tradition people would kill for i mean i know w the xfl and you know i was playing when xfl first came out and you know he hated me here in training camp in 2002 i think it was 2001 um, you know it's exciting to be downstairs or something like that, but I think it really helps when you have that kind of tradition.
I mean this league has been around in some form, shape or form, you know, for a long time for 75 years, but my math has never been my strong point, but no. Don't quote me on that, but I think, you know, we're going to see some exciting changes here in a while, like when you talked about bc and you know they all have really nice first class facilities you know the only team in the league that has one i mean our our stadium here is the susan sarandon the places like its beautiful but its going up there good so um calgary you know they could use an upgrade theres some warm complaints about them trying to relate to the hockey team that they have there and they can't seem to agree on a deal with the new arena but hey you know we have a lot of good things happening good now new arenas winnipeg you know ottawa is beautiful if you ever had a chance to go to a game there i mean they built everything with the fan and man in mind you know you go theres a movie theater theres a condo there its just exciting man you know yeah theres no reason why that we can't do that here in Edmonton and I think we're um our first steps here are pretty encouraging with hiring Victor and bringing back Chris Jones yeah I mean that's the best of the cfl and his lineage and their legacy is also sometimes the hardest thing to combat because you do well we've done this for a long time yeah and it's with any business I mean I do I'm a wedding videographer when i'm not around you know good to talk to cfl greats and like it's so easy to get complacent when you've been doing something for a long time and it's working so you know if the pandemic and the exfel of everything and everything shook everyone in the cfl a bit and said oh wow okay we really need to figure this out I mean it's for the best because you can keep that legacy, keep the lineage and then bring some people in and figure out some ways to grow and improve.
I think it's about it's the right balance, I mean it's great to honor tradition and the people that came before, but you also have tounderstand that it's a different demographic, you know I didn't grow up with the internet, you know I didn't grow up. ready with everything I did, you know, collected for data dissemination at a later date, we were climbing trees, you know, and hiding things under rocks in the woods, you know it wasn't like that, you know, my children. I have two children at home at the moment they are nine and 12 years old. and those kids, I tell you what a man, they're pretty smart and it's a competitive market like you have to bring something to the table when you run a franchise like moose. you have to bring in someone who knows about fan engagement how to get clicks how to get people you know to look at your product and you can't run this league the way they ran it when I was playing or even when my dad played, you know, I understand it's a gate driven league, but you can't run it like a gate driven league, you have to be creative, you have to draw people in, you have to have some curiosity, generate some excitement and I think they know, like i said i keep bringing this up and i don't want to sound like a fan but i really appreciate the fact that we have the kind of experience at VictoryQuad to be able to do such fundamentally simple things like combine the resources of the university of alberta and the edmonton moose to generate like uh some b uzz around, you know, let's bring in some people, let's get some, I mean, think about the recruiting booth for you, you know, think about what you might to see the rough riders doing what tastes with regina or is it going to have saskatoon come down or do you know there are so many different possibilities we have a great football brand up here you know it's three tries it's wide open field wider field longer um more passes a lot more leadership changes so at the end of the day if you look at the nfl now or, um, we've been in the ncaa, they're doing things that we were doing in the '90s, you know, like the fan of the The ducks came here and tore it up, it was for 6,000 yards, you know that's unheard of but I mean, it was like taking a few steps down the field and looking back, there's a defensive lineman, it was solo and it was exciting, the only time that offense stopped was someone dropped the ball, so a lot of those innovations like the five receiver. sets and the you know the one back se ts and stuff like that we were doing that in 1992 91 you know it's exciting football and I don't understand why we can't sell this league if we take the right approach we can't sell it for ya you know the old approach of putting ads in newspapers and things like that time 35 years ago that's the internet this is the age of instant clicks instant gratification we have to keep up otherwise we're going to lose our you know all that valuable history will be gone and um i want my kids to enjoy it like i did when i was a little kid well it's interesting because you know we're here covering the usfl owned by fox they're just launching it you know 50 million committed every year for three years all these deals and nbc and all that and we know we're going back and forth online complaining about the same things you are about the cfl you know you have no right the major sports network is pro pietaria and throw all of this where I It's like these are things that they might be doing that maybe aren't generating money correctly, but they generate interest, they generate content, they engage people and I think that's the hardest thing when you're running the business. money on this not today but maybe in a month or two months you know and it's getting but it's funny that you have two totally different leagues like the cfl and the usfl financially well placed and you still have the same problems to try to get things going right hockey is king here so you're really competing with that you know for uh I think right now this is the way this league operates and I'm not sure you probably are familiar with it having seen the cfl but you know around labor day is when the regular season peaks and then that coincides with a, you know, the advent of the nfl and the nhl starts kicking in their training grounds and right after that it just takes it's just a fact that the eyes start to drift and then the audience kind of thins out um but you know that was in the old form and I think now you know you're looking at a league like the n ba, you know like they were messed up in the '80s, you know, and then, you know, you could argue that Michael Jordan came in and rescued the league there and took the mantle from Bird, Magic and Isaiah, but I would say you know that they just figured out a way to market to those guys and market to a younger audience and I think so, if you look at our demographic, it's an older demographic, particularly here in this city, uh wow, that's awesome, that's great, but we need to find a way to engage the younger fans because if you lose that demographic it doesn't bode well for your league so I really like the fact that you mentioned today was an even drop you know that's the way you know kids look in those things and come on oh man that's cool ogo that's a great looking mascot you know that's a way to get people engaged and talking and you throw those things online and you just say, hey man, what do you think? and that's how you started when I was playing in the '90s we used to go to community schools and do what's called a stay in school initiative and I don't know what the incarnation would be now for players but that's one way to get people involved and you can do it. online stuff though you can communicate with a classroom have a zoom meeting that's just basics it's so simple you know what I mean the way we have this technology it seems like it knows the links that are being The ones that are doing it right now are the ones that embrace that technology and find a way to bridge the gap between themselves and the ticket holders or their potential audience, even like in the super bowl this year, the female soccer players came out of flag. and I think they were involved I can't remember if it was the question you know we were we just got into my mom's house so we're trying to get all the food and watch the game but you know here we're trying to bring women we are trying to bring younger children we are trying to bring maybe parents who were well we are concerned with some of the problems that are going on with soccer we will hear something On the biggest stage in the world we are going to spotlight these soccer players from female flag football flyers and get them involved and a part of the festivities.
It doesn't have to be one size fits all, it can be a lot of different things for a lot of different people, I love the idea of having the flag football event, you know, and bringing people in and including, I know this is how old I am. i am but uh the punt pass and kick competitions they used to have at th in the 70s you know i think andy reed came in as a 12 year old he looked like he was 38 and he won that competition i think i remember having seen that, dave, you know, holy cow, that was a long time ago. kind of thing that you know started as an idea in a boardroom somewhere that you know and, um, you know when you bring in more people that are included because it used to be kind of a niche where only certain people could do it and there it was. kind of horror and mystique to that but that was from that time that's how this is a different time this is a different era more people can do more things and i think we should accept that you know that and i think so new.
As I've been saying, the leagues that do well tend to have that approach rather than, you know, I think that's something that hockey in particular has struggled with. and old football you know the I do a lot of fundraising at the minor football level to try to make things more accessible to kids, but oh my gosh hockey is so expensive. I think my wife was telling me that a pair of skates can cost like two or three thousand dollars. that's cool man i mean but people pay for it because they want to play and why is that right so you gotta take a look at that i think sometimes and a guy like victor you know i think to victory not would you mind sharing this. but even before he took the job, he reached out to me and this is a guy who runs a billion dollar company.
He DMed me and said what do you think is going on in Edmonton and I was like why does this guy want my opinion? you know well he told me it's going well you played there and i remember when i was growing up and you know i wish to see them play and i just wanted to know what the disconnect was and i gave him my opinion and he said he knows what and we don't always message a and he he gave me his opinion and I gave him my opinion, but that's what commitment means, you know, and it can seem overwhelming. everyone can do it like i don't know if i would have the energy to be able to reach out to all the men and have those conversations that require an enormous amount of energy, uh, vast reserves of patience i'm sure because you'll probably get some negative comments along the way, in In particular, you know about how things have been here in this city for the last two years with the name change, the rebrand, and kobit, and you know it's been very, very difficult, but this is the fault. that for a long time this was the CFO's flagship franchise and in my mind it's still um you know we have a legacy here that's unmatched and um we have uh the community still cares because we're still still being talked about out there on the street if they weren't talking about us then you would know we'd have a problem but people are talking they won't necessarily come to the games but they're still talking about it and I think if uh you know Victor is continuing his focus on the fans, I think we're going to be in pretty good shape, I just can't tell you how lucky we are right now because we have a person who is willing to think outside the box to get things done. that I think there was a lot of resistance in the past because oh we've never done it that way I think you mentioned that we've already done it this way in the beginning that approach doesn't work because things change and people change and circumstances they change too you know if you would have told me three years ago that we would be in a global pandemic and we would all wear masks wherever we went I would have told you we are crazy but the teams that have done well and I have to give it to the cfl for find a way to have a season last year because if they hadn't had that season they probably would have retired so there's a lot of really good things the league is doing right now but I think there's a lot of room for improvement yeah , the example i gave is i don't remember if it was last week or the week before on the podcast i was sitting late one night on twitter and i was checking my phone and i saw victor uh uh com go into someone's profile you know comment on someone's tweet and say hey i really like your twitter banner whatever you know the picture you have that's all that too yeah like where you know what you did that? a little bit more and i'm like this is something where you know this isn't right at all this is just someone who cares asking you you know this is it i'm making a statement about whatever i'm going to going out we are doing this or that to make a big big gesture this is someone who usually cares and is curious about it he understands the benefit of like the component of viral marketing you know like in the past it was said you know like if a successful business do something tell your friends about us where you heard about us why you found out that we have a tool at our disposal right now where you can have those conversations and in the fraction of the time and fraction of the effort it takes to do that, like you don't even have to see the person face to face think about how many people see that exchange online i saw i was watching it go down in real time huh think about the people it is y'all have seen the level of engagement i mean it's just great and i can't believe we've had this tool right in front of us the whole time and no one really thought i know nick peltier uh on the elves he's done an amazing job in trying to get the franchise to that and I was met with varying degrees of commitment from that front office, but I really think you know we have a really cool opportunity ahead of us with a person who is a bit of a visionary with you know in regards to how they approach , you know bring and it's so simple that you know that's kind of like if you show interest that basically tells people in the community that you care and that you really are because we haven't had people do that here before.
You know they can bring up the fact that they are online in an interview, but you never really see anyone from that office and joking around with people online. Or they have to create the account. and they treat it like, oh, you know, like I don't really want to connect because I'm afraid of making someone mad or because it's hard, it's a minefield in a way, but I think if you've been in that as victor has been in that sphere and in asiaand there's a lot more of that going on and he's got a lot of experience reaching people through private messages or the internet or whatever and understanding that you have to be responsible for everything you say and do online and that's something where i was working doing a job for telus talking to the kids about it um and that's something i think yes and i think they'll do that's moose can get in create some kind of association with telus go to the schools and do it assuming yes they're not doing it anymore, there's a lot of benefits because you can have these intimate conversations and it doesn't take as much energy, you know? you just have to turn on your computer go from one meeting to the next and you know bob is your uncle uh last question for you today i could talk to you a long time about all this uh daryl one of our writers would be remiss if i did there is a story about you you got locked out of a car on the frozen tundra and he said when you're done you have to ask him about it so that will be my last question today but i promise to bring you back again in the future if you invite us and we talk some more , yeah I was up and north of Slav Lakes probably an hour and a half drive in the sticks and I'm talking about a tow truck driver for maybe 300 miles and I'm not talking like I'm talking square miles square kilometers whatever's right I'm still a little bit American that's why I say miles but and uh I can't remember I locked myself in and this was nice For example cell phones weren't that great so there was not much reception.
I don't even really know how it happened, but uh, yeah, so Daryl is done. I was there to give a talk at the school. um edmonton soccer club and i had to be at this school at a certain time and yeah i was rescued not exactly sure how it even happened but yeah you know im smart i locked myself out of my vehicle in middle of nowhere i mean i'm talking up north uh in this province anyway i'm not you know i've been all the way up to tuck the uptick which is even further but when you stay out of your car in that area you know you humiliate yourself pretty quick but luckily Daryl was there he rescued me and he still makes fun of me every time I see him when he tells that story he's like man you're lucky I was there I am like yeah no kidding ok well here we go we have that on uh jed thank you so much again for your time today and sharing some thoughts about edmonton and i think it's going to be uh it's good here we are we are it's a new beginning and it's going to be a new uh going here by himself alright man e thanks for having me i appreciate it i hope to do it again sometime thanks you
