United Airlines resumes flights after briefly requesting nationwide halt

Let's start this hour with breaking news: The FAA says that United Airlines, one of the largest in the US, had requested a rare

nationwide

grounding stop and we just learned that the stop order ground was lifted just moments ago, but it's caused a major disruption for customers on those United

flights

, so let's get right to it with NBC News Aviation correspondent Tom Costello Tom, do we know what was behind this and why? Was it resolved so quickly? Computer problems are the bane of our existence, we love them and we hate them. them and apparently became a big enemy of United Airlines in the last 45 minutes or so.

Here's what happened: We got word that United was asking the FAA for a ground stop citing a global IT issue and that meant they were asking all planes that were about to take off, stay at your origin, stay at the original location, don't go out and then about 10 minutes ago United lifted that request so there's good news there's a live shot of Reagan Airport we also have Newark Airport as well as Newark. of course, being one of United's largest hubs on the east coast, big hubs are well known to Newark, as we mentioned, Houston Washington Dulles is a big hub O'Hare Denver San Francisco and LAX, so when United has a problem, those airports feel it.

Most acutely, very, very quickly, Secretary P, Buda Judge, Secretary of Transportation quickly put out a tweet or an X, as they say these days, essentially saying that they were aware of the United Airlines grounding due to IT problems. The FAA was briefed on the scope. However, that's already outdated because we've already lifted the ground stop request if you're sitting at an airport somewhere and you have a flight that may be delayed because of this.
