Ultimate Home Generator? - Ecoflow Delta / Portable Backup Power
Feb 27, 2020In today's video we're going to take a look at a very special
generator
and no it's not the one you're looking at here and neither is this one in fact thisgenerator
is totally unique because it doesn't run on gas at all now that's great for a lot of people , especially if you don't want the noise fumes or all the maintenance issues but it's a different kind of machine but it's much more capable than you might think and in this video I'm going to put it through the same test that I do with my generators gas and you can see for yourself if this is something you should consider. Now the product that I'm going to show you is called Eco flow Delta not eco flow is the company name and Delta is the model itself but the unusual part is that this is a pre production unit now that they released it as part of a Kickstarter campaign that is still going on and was very successful in fact they were only after about 50 grand and ended up with almost two and a half million dollars now it's not like they fooled everyone this product was specifically aimed at many other competitors with shortcomings and now we will see those people get fooled or become the bargain of the year by arriving so early and the first thing you will notice is the physical size of this thing not only is it about 30lbs and very compact I like the bottom of this thing because those rubber pads are super thick and I think they'll hold up really well in case you're going to scrape it along the pavement or a rough surface and with any battery unit the first thing you want to do is charge it to the one hundred percent and that's where this thing is very different this Eco Flow Delta can be charged to eighty percent capacity in just one hour and in most cases you can charge the entire unit in less than two hours , now that's very different to the competitors some of which take almost a whole day to charge and you'll also notice this thing is a very good screen but it's pretty smart because the screen changes depending on what you're doing so which right now we're charging the units you can see there actually tells you it will take about two hours to recharge and currently it's about 30 percent capacity so this will change depending on what you're doing.
Another great advantage of this machine is that it does not make noise. hear them run so this is awesome for a place like a campground where you want to charge something or you want to run a machine and to do that you have to use one of these electrical outlets in the back now that they have given you six outlets in the you could technically plug in a surge protection strip and get more if you need them but they are easy to use but there is one key difference and it's that little hole that's right there if your wires have that extra ground lug that tab is I'm just going to sit inside the hole now at first I thought this was a problem but it turns out this is actually a safety design and is a code requirement so no battery unit like this will have a
power
plug ground connection and you have to use them like this Now that we're one hundred percent, let's put this to the test. Now, if you've watched my channel before, you know I've done a lot of generator reviews, so I didn't want to change anything to try. this, so what I'm going to do is hook it up to my house the same way I would hook up a gas-
power
ed generator and we could see how it works. Another awesome feature of this little generator is that it is actually inside my house because there is no gas involved, no smoke noise or anything to worry about, you can also safely keep it inside which is so much more convenient and you don't have to worry about it getting stolen and this is awesome if you're in an apartment or a condo or even a boat because it's so much easier to keep this thing right where you need it and as small as it is it puts out about the same power than a Honda EU 2000 gasoline generator because that thing has 2,000 boost watts but it's really only capable of putting out about 1,800 continuous watts so what I'm going to do here is hook this up with a heavy duty wire to an on/off switch actual transfer I have at my house now remember this generator is only 120 volts which means it's normal house power but you couldn't run things like a well pump or water heater with this you just couldn't make enough power and this is a transfer switch that's code approved for a hundred and twenty volts and that thing has four circuits and I've got some pretty big stuff on there and now that I've got this generator hooked up we're going to turn those circuits on and we'll What I'm doing here is swapping out the circuits so now they're going to run directly through the Eco stream and with those live circuits we're already getting data you can see I'm using about 537 watts and I'm estimated to have about two hours onbackup
power this thing so I have it plugged in but what is it actually running now when you can run things like lights which may not surprise you much but what does is the fact that I'm also using a full size fridge and this is not new it's about ten years old and has no problem turning it on but what's even more amazing is that I'm using my heating system right now and I let it come on to fully run to make sure this thing could power it and it did fine and this is a huge plus for a unit like this and i did the same kind of test with the honda eu 2000 and it was successful too but again this is a battery powered motor. drive and this is a pretty heavy test and you can see on the screen that I can run for about three hours and that's pretty impressive considering the size of the drive and I'm running a number of big things but now I want to take it outside and do a different kind of test using a 1500 watt heater which is a pretty constant draw to see how the unit performs and we'll turn it on and put it on max setting so we get as much current as possible now this thing is drawing a big load or almost 1500 watts and the computers tell us we have about 51 minutes of runtime now which may not sound like a lot of time really doesn't compare to a gas generator but you have to remember this is for a different market it will be for someone who says camping and wants to run a coffee maker or small heater just for a while and this may be a situation where you couldn't have gas or had no ability to refuel so when doing a test like this, this gives you an idea that you can run very heavy appliances for quite a long period of time while the heater was running.I wanted to check the voltage to make sure it was putting out the correct amount and what this meter did did confirm it was getting about a hundred and twenty volts which is totally normal for a unit like this now I let the unit run for about half an hour and it worked fine. It wasn't overheating even with that full 1500 watt draw, but what do you do when you start running on power and want to recharge nicely? they offer this cool thing and this is actually a collapsible solar panel that plugs into this unit now again if you have a gas generator you might be laughing the same thing this is ridiculous but not really who it's designed if you're camping say you're in the wilderness and need a way to easily generate power this kind of thing works great and they've also cleverly designed this case to allow you to take the solar panel and support it because often when you're outside you're not going to have something that's convenient so you can get as much sunlight as possible and by using this case you can really do that quite easily and they give you these waterproof connectors that are easy to plug in and then you're good to go to get started and now you can plug it into that special port on the side of this little generator and now with it plugged in you can see what the setup looks like and this is great I can see myself using it like I'm camping or at the beach and wanting to have a nice electricity supply without having to deal with gasoline and you can see the display also changes a lot now it tells us it will take 10 hours to charge using the solar panel but you also get a little wattage showing 43 watts now the panel is rated at 60, which tells me that because it's later in the day, we're not getting as much output from Sun as we normally would in the middle of the day.
So what does it all mean and how did this company break through two million dollars in Kickstarter backers when other companies can barely get their products off the ground and it's because what they did was focus on the things that other similar products simply couldn't do. This thing loads faster than anything else. You can hold that charge. for up to a year and it's really simple to operate now being said it's not going to replace someone's gas generator let's say it's 5,000 watts it's running a water heater and well pump this will be for someone who maybe you never even buy a generator or you are in a situation where you can't hear and all the noise or the fumes and you just want something that is easy to operate and the last thing is if you have someone in your family that has medical equipment that you may never be able to say start a generator, this is much easier and could keep things like a CPAP or oxygen concentrator running if you have a power outage, so it's a pretty cool unit.
I was really impressed with what it could do and it gave me a better understanding of what a battery powered unit was capable of and that was the point of this video so I hope you found it interesting. give me a thumbs up subscribe my channel for more videos coming soon
