star
this week so we're very excited because this is a very old traditional block and it's one of those where if you tweak it a little bit you get completely new ideas so it's really fun to watch so I'm going to start and this is my quilt back here and my ohio
star is pretty standard with just a little keystone here that makes a secondary block of a little churn run out here and I'll show you how to do it so just adding that little block in the corner we've changed lift up the ohio star a little bit to make my quilt which you will need are two packs of five inch squares and i used silverstone from wishwell for robert kaufman and then you will need some background squares and i used these five inch squares but if you are using yardage you will need one and a quarter of yards of yards and those yards will also include all of this framing that's on this quilt you'll need your border to be three quarter yards and it's five inch strips now you'll notice that on this quilt I only made nine blocks that's because I was so excited about it what happened in the corners that i actually did two more little projects that i'll show you right at the end so the backing is three and a quarter yards and we just used this beautiful gold with the gold metallic you know honestly i wasn't sure yeah i was going to love this fabric but once i put it on the quilt it's just beautiful the print here is called just roses and our quilting print is called just roses and it's just that pretty print and the only other thing i used it's the clearly perfect slotted trimmer and it's this little ruler here and I use it to square my blocks so let me show you how to do this now to make this type of block here we go here where we have co color in the center and white on the outside. There's a hack for that and here's the hack so that what you want to do is go through your package and you want to pick a square for your center and you want to pick. a square for your hourglass blocks and you want to pick a square for the color in the middle and you want them all to be different you know different shades to make them stand out and then you need a pack of charms that you are going to put your corners on and I already cut my charm pack in half my five inch square in half and I made it four two and a half inch squares so you're going to take a white background square and your light background or your light square and we're going to draw lines on those and we're going to place them on two squares that are exactly the same fabric, so we're going to put these here and we're going to sew a quarter inch on both sides and I'm going to let you do that and so just draw your corner line to corner and we're going to sew a quarter inch on both sides now this is a really fun way to make them you can make them so obviously they are you know both colors are the same on both sides of the square but I love how this makes a square here that is different from the squares that are here and actually if you had no frame and you put them next to each other it would make a whole different block so I'm going to crop. these on the line here and then natalie if you open them up for me and push to the dark side that would be awesome oops wait oh you're good you're good it got a little wild there we had a I had a lot of fun with this block because it is very traditional and it is a great block.

I called mine celebration because well, one because I think the pretty shiny fabric and the other reason is because of the runners I made and just thought. it looked like some kind of party it turned out so pretty so now we have one of these and one of these and we're going to combine these two together so I'm going to draw the line on the back of either one you can do either both I'm going to do it on the solid and I'm just going to line up my ruler and I'm going to draw a line and I'm going to go from the center out just along this seam here I think it would make it a little difficult so what I'm what I'm going to do is put one of these that has the lighter background and the darker exterior and then the smooth one and I'm going to put them so that my colors are opposite like this so that they fit together very well. and comfortable and I'm going to do that and me and you can feel like there's no space in between and I'm going to go ahead and let misty do that and again we're sewing a quarter inch on both sides and I'll do this while we wait, what? does it matter at all which piece goes on which side to get the light marble print in the middle?
I know it doesn't matter, no, because you can turn it's the same thing at least I don't think it will we can find out in a minute if it does I was just curious I'd just like to make sure everyone was in the right place I think it works I think it works alright either way alright so now i'm going to cut them in half and that will give us two of these where you have the color on one side yeah because you can do this and flip them either way yeah so now before I iron these out I'm going to trim them now the reason I use the clearly perfect slotted trimmer is because it has this center line and this straight line so I can fit all of this in and uh so this continues stitch line this goes on this stitch line and makes it very easy for me you guys have heard me talk about making sure you have a tool that works well for your brain now Natalie will show you a different way to Square them up and uh, so i used the slotted trimmer clearly perfect but i can tell you how to do it if you don't have one, yes they are much easier to trim with this trimmer though with the trimmer tool i don't love the slotted trimmer for half of anything, except for the hourglasses i really love them it's like it's like perfect they're like perfectly built for the time for the hourglass setting yeah with that square so easy with that little uh seam at the top and there's that one and then i got one more here y'know if you girls helped me. all along i could have made this quilt so much faster if we didn't have to make ours the same there you go you helped me and it was quick so now we have now we have a half square and these are now four inch squares so all of our center square and our outer squares need to be four inches, so I'm going to take four of my white squares that are going to go in my corners and I'm going to take my center square right here and I'm going to cut them all to four inches, which means I'm going to cut about an inch off so you can do it this way where you have yours lined up in the corner here or you can cut an inch off the side here which is what I'm going to do and mine aren't quite the same size so I make sure to measure from my little inner block right there and then I'm going to clean up this edge here so here are my four so I probably made a few more cuts than I needed but ro you know at least they're right at least they're right so once you've cut all the squares to four inches you're ready to assemble your block so we're going to place this middle here and then we're going to take our hourglass blocks and we're going to place the lighter square towards the center like this so that it forms this square with a square look to give it a really fun dimension there and then we have these corner blocks that we're going to put here now you can see on the quilt behind from me that mine are in the shape of a snowball in the corner and by snowball you know I use th term a lot and people don't always know what that means someone said what is he doing what does he mean by snowball it's when you put a little block in a corner like this and make it have a round effect like a snowball then we can, you can make a snowball out of your blocks once the whole block is set up or you can You can do it before and I'm going to have Misty do this before and do you need me to draw the line or can you watch it?
I can see it I have this diagonal seam tape so oh I love that diagonal seam tape guys if you have any problems you know how to do that whole diagonal seam tape thing or the whole diagonal seam thing be sure to check out the diagonal seam tape because that's great helpful I've been doing it long enough I just look at it back and forth but you know sometimes we have to draw the line sometimes we use the seam tape whatever it takes to get it right here's the last good and I'm going to go ahead and cut these right and take them to natalie so she can iron them out so I'm going to cut this out right here and you can do it with scissors or your rotary cutter I have scissors in my hand so that it's what i'm using it looks easy i'm a creature of habit there we go and then we're ready to put our block together i'm going to have misty go ahead and start on this middle row so what we're going to do is light er our light the ones on the side and we're going to place them here like this now if you want you can snip these little corners right here and sew right down that side.
I'll trim this little corner when you square them up. end up with two little spikes there okay so you just need two of those then these other two here are going to each have two squares on each side and the squares are going to be facing out so yeah just to remember that this part is on top and these squares are facing out and it's the same on both rows oh so rry yeah thanks out out out ok so we're going to go here and we're going to do the same thing like this what misty if you can absolutely join them and then natalie if you want to press them so the seam goes towards the middle that's ok this will help you nest your block if you are pressing if the middle one is towards the middle and the others towards the exterior, and I generally do it the way the seams want it to be laid out. they know they have their they have their own address and I let them do that and it generally works better and then here are these were these that you want to take out I want those to take out and I see that naturally they want to go that way so we just let them do yours there we go and so you can see how this comes together real quick here now they're going to match up these center seams right here they're going to look and make sure they fit and it looks like my this seam here is just a little bit bigger just a hair bigger so I'm going to have missy put it on the bottom because the feed dogs will absorb more fabric and that will make the combination a little nicer but she's going to sew and make sure these two are lined up exactly and you know you can give them a little tug one way or another to make sure they match exactly i made you nervous by saying i'm not doing my best ok and here's the flip side resu It turned out pretty good it turned out perfect here we go and that's what's important we just do our best you know no one ever returned a quilt to me because the stitches weren't perfect so don't worry about it yeah just remember to bring those lights to the center and we're ready to go here we're going good now natalie if you push that we can show it as such a fun block it's so fun isn't it? and I know we've all enjoyed doing the things we've done with them, but I've got a couple more things to do. how are you alright so this is our block and it's perfect and for this quilt we used nine of these this is how these go in here like this and you can see it makes a little secondary block here now whatever the size of your block that is the size of your frame and then the small keystone so my frame is two and a half inches wide and these are two and a half inch small keystones and this is how I put them together but I looked at this and I looked at this corner and i thought what if i made a snow globe on both corners and they would be here like this and i was wondering what it would look like so let me show you these table runners i put together now this one here look how different that block looks just by adding that other corner and on this one here i still stuck with my two and a half inch frame and just did a two and a half inch white border and then tied it in with color now this is the exact same block with two little res gray squares in op corners uquests but i changed the size of my frame and look how different it looks just by changing that size so this is an inch and a half frame here and i tackled it all with the inch and a half and then i went ahead and tackled it with a little three inch border here on the side and so just swapping out those corner squares made a whole different project and it looks really really really fun and they're all in the right pattern yeah all of those are included in the pattern so it's really fun to think about the what if factor so now we're going to send it to misti who takes the what if factor is even bigger that's right or smaller or smaller is ok , so this is my little quilt to hang on the wall.
I love it, it's so happy, isn't it? He is so cute. I decided to do a smaller project with this. See I put these four little patches in the corner which creates this beautiful chain effect and it's really simple to do almost exactly like Jenny's only smaller so the block from the corner isbefore we make that first perfect cut here is otherwise it works great so it's easy for you we're going to cut um two and a half because it's still a five inch square so we're going to cut two and a half and we're going to cross in both directions and then we're going to cut on that diagonal lines to get eight half square triangles and it's a good idea to cut the vertical and horizontal cuts first because there are no lines drawn correctly and then if they mess up you can always cut them with the lines seperately that's exactly what could work a little more forgiving that one yes like t It kind of took me off a bit but I can just slide it back and you can see the line completely yeah that's ok so if you push some of these , I think only two because we have, um, I have a few others. done already so we'll just do one of these blocks so this block is essentially a patch of four and it has a navy blue on one side and a background on the other side and then the two half square triangles that are pointing in the same direction for these Little guys um I'm actually a sucker for block locks I also use whatever tool you need to get the job done and I believe in multiple tools and multiple uses they all have their purpose yes they do and they all work for different people so these fit really well at two inches two inches I love it but you get a lot and you don't have to work so hard at it it's not hard what's so good about that easy eight yeah so these are this little block is a patch four and then um and then as you sew them together there's a little routine or mantra that I use to keep me on track and know that I'm doing it right why would you worry I was worried I wouldn't wear them in the right direction and I would sell them the other way around or whatever so I figured out pretty early on that they literally both sew the same way and then you flip one of them over okay so this always points this way with the white pointing this way and the navy pointing that way and then you're going to put your navy block on top and you're going to do the same thing for the same half, you do half and half half white and half navy yeah , exactly, but they come together exactly the same way, so your solid pieces always go to always go on the top to the dark, okay, yeah, or the navy side, yeah, then you can just sew them together, and so done, because that's how I do it, I just did a navy and a white and a navy and white and I did them one after the other. sort of in that order but i think you could if you wanted to do all your exercises first and then all the white ones ok but we'll put those together and then we'll get and your little squares are two inches too just as a reminder they match the half square triangles and they come right out of your yardage now i just pressed these with my fingers because i knew i didn't want to get up and press each one and they are so small they press back quite easily and then your solid blocks go in opposite corners and that creates that little block like this so you see your solids in opposite corners and we'll join them you'll nest that little seam absolutely that you know if you're pushing your finger you can decide which way they go pretty easily right and they're small enough that so they can change direction if they want but ok make sure you have that they usually like to push to the solid side , which is fine because they go in opposite directions anyway, so naturally the following is what we have. go so nice al ok that's really nice so we have our block in the middle that is three and a half inches that we cut from our yardage we have i think i have some extra ones uh these point towards the center one more here and one more here and a couple more hourglass blocks the white one in the middle yeah I think it's that corner block just magical oh my god I thought I had my whole hourglass but let me square this one real quick and we'll be good for go, I'm actually really glad you showed that method because, well, I would have been lost with that, yeah, and sometimes you just don't need another tool you have, you have rulers handy and you can make it work. well and i love the quote too um i think it might be picasso maybe someone will have to prove that to me but its like learning the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist exactly for all the tools you know. just do what you have to with whatever, but it's nice to know there are other ways to get things right too, so once these are all stitched you have your finished block and then it's time to make the frame, which is just one big nine patch frame so i just took one and a half inch strips and attached a set of navy white navy and then another set of white navy white now your long strips are the length of your block and those are all navy white navy and when I cut them I was able to get four I think from a set of strips and then I always had this little piece left over and that's what I did for you or used for my center fringe patches yeah , so you don't have to do the right thing for your little nine patches to get them to attach very easily I just cut the strips into one and a half inch segments like this here let me get this out alright no well I didn't do it there come on ok, so you start with a blank, a navy blue, white and then you put one of those in the middle with the navy blue. white navy and then a white navy white and that makes your little nin The patch for the center which is essentially a keystone which I think can also open up so many ideas really for framing if you put a whole block for your keystone on instead of just a solid how many ideas could there be? we came up with that in my mind, competing with so many, so it's darling and then you know, but other than that, once the nine patches are done and the girdle straps are done, it's essentially the same as any other quilt that sashes in keystone absolutely just put them together yeah and this is a great fit because I could wear it with so many different blocks yeah and I really think it lifts it up a bit where it's like wow that's fancy yeah the other thing i thought about is like how different would it look if i had done the opposite where there was a little blue stripe in the middle and a lot more white space it could have looked a little more i think maybe it would be a little more modern or a little bit lighter er a lot more negative space for sure yeah this has a really traditional look and yeah which I love too oh yeah yeah so we're looking at all the different varieties so I put them together there's 20 blocks and put them together in a four by five configuration. ions and I think it looks cool I think it's fun the blocks are nine and a half just in case now I feel like we've made this um ohio block very simple and very doable and with all the different things we've added it's just that we've made it better and upped our game and we show you lots of different ways to do things yeah I hope we inspired some good creative thoughts and some new ideas for you so again here's mine yeah and here's missy and natalie they are so beautiful and we hope you enjoyed this
