Trevor Noah Thinks Trump Could Make Comedians' Jobs a Little Harder

Feb 27, 2020
We're back with Trevor Noah. So has he interviewed he...has he interviewed each of these presidential candidates at this point? Almost 125, yes. No, we've been lucky. I think the only people we haven't had on the show are Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden. Oh, and Mike Bloomberg. Because now he's in the race. But everyone else has come to The Daily Show. And we've had fun talking to all the Democratic candidates. So you're doing... I don't know how you

make

it funny. And they use you a lot on CBS Morning News, like they clash. Oh yes, yes, yes.

I mean, it's a sad and scary place right now. And somehow you

make

it really fun. I mean, do you get depressed going to work? Or how do you make this funny? Here's the thing. I think in processing politics, the one thing we have to learn to do as people, in my opinion, is to remember that there was a time before and there will always be a time after. And many times people tell us to live in the present. But if you're not careful, you only live in the present. And then you act like the present is going to be forever.

And that is not the case. And that's what I try and do, I try to remember that, to me, politics is what's supposed to be happening. So I can't get mad at politics. And then what I'm trying to do is engage in a dialogue that educates people, informs people, including me, and gets us to a place where we understand each other a

little

more. So one of the best compliments I ever got, no joke, was that on the flight back to Los Angeles there was a guy on the plane. And he approached me. And he said, hey, my son said he shouldn't bother you.

But he wanted you to know that I'm a very conservative guy. And I don't agree with many of the things you say. But you're a funny guy. You're a cool guy. And you're funny. And I like that about you. Alright, my son said you'd hate me. But thank you very much. And I shook his hand. And I was like, hey, man, thanks for seeing me as a human being. I see you as a human being. And we don't agree on many things. But we still agree that we are human beings. And I think if we can find that place, we can go from there.

Wow, we have to get back to that right now. We need to get back to... It's like you can talk to someone and get along with them and have a great... some stranger. And then you discover that they are not the same political party. They have a different thing. And suddenly you have an opinion about him. And it's really a scary time right now. I don't think we all have to be exactly the same. I think we can allow ourselves to have other opinions, other things, likes and dislikes. I just don't like people who hurt people.
That's my... I draw the line there. I agree completely. I say, don't hurt anyone. How do you feel? Is Trump as president a good thing for you for comedy? Or how do you feel about it? I always tell people, look, I did comedy before Trump. There were stand-up shows before Trump. There were late night shows before Trump. You know, for me, I never think Trump is good for us. If anything, sometimes I wish he would make us work a

little

harder

. Because now, as a comedian, I think he did this. And then people say, "That's crazy." I say, yeah, then he did this.
And it's like he's not doing much. I'm just showing you what he did. Anyway, I just want to talk to you. Because you're still traveling. You sold out Madison Square Garden and Staples Center. I mean, you're doing great. Thank you so much. And you're doing The Daily Show, touring and doing stand-up. What's it like to be in a hotel all the time and travel as much as you travel? You know, it's not bad. Because unlike normal road tours, I used to tour all the time, from Monday to Sunday. Now I tour on the weekends. Although you get used to traveling.
I am a very good traveler. I never pack more than I need. I never pack less than I need. I learned that you always pack just the right amount of underwear plus one in case of emergency. Don't ask me what that emergency

could

be. And then I just pack things in the order I'm going to need them in the bag. Sometimes I have seen people where they fly. And then they take something out of the ceiling. And then they have to rummage through the bag. Or the TSA, I know what the TSA will look for. They always think my nail clippers are like a Rambo knife or something.
So it's like having that on top of you. Have things in the right place. When you arrive at the hotel, you have your routine. My routine is to go to the bathroom. Before going to sleep, turn on all the water. See how long it takes for things to heat up. Find out what's going on. This way you will know in the morning what is going to happen. Because there is nothing worse than having to go somewhere. And then it's time for the shower. Then you say ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. And then you're looking at your watch.
Now your day starts horribly. You have to plan... so for me, I know everything, which side of the bed, where the outlets are. People get too comfortable planning a bed as if it were their bed, not yours. You are travelling. So when you come in, don't look... it's not your bed. It's a hotel bed. Look at where the airflow comes in. Sometimes the wind blows it through a door or out of a window. You have to think about all of these things so you can get the best sleep possible while traveling. I'm so glad I asked that question.
It is wonderful. It is wonderful. You haven't made me miss touring at all. You made me so happy that now I stay home. The Daily Show, you're great at that. It airs every night at 11:00 on Comedy Central. We'll be right back. Trevor Noah. Hello, I'm Andy.
