Trash to Treasure Dresser Makeover with Melange Paints - YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS!

Jun 05, 2021
Hello guys, welcome back to the furniture flipping master. If you are new here, my name is Lauren and I am a full-time kindergarten teacher. I also flip furniture aside, and in fact, I just paid off all my student loan debt from flipping furniture. here at fft we

have

a mission and a journey to help other teachers in the same situation pay off their student loan debt and in today's video we are going to turn

this

dresser

around, it is a nice mid-century style piece century, it's very heavy but I'm excited because I'm actually going to use a new

melange

paint in the color Gator, so yes, it's true, I'm going crazy with the color, but I

have

a feeling it's going to look amazing, so Let's start. removing all the hardware, so I'm actually going to keep

this

hardware and fix it up a little bit, so we're going to save it here in this container and this is correct in my way of removing this piece.

From the hardware it looks like there's a bit of binding stuff going in there, but how do I get it out? Interesting, I don't know how I can get it out because the screw is there, so if you notice there are some ugly flower designs. on the top drawers and they're pretty dated and I don't like the way they look so I'm going to sand them down and then I'm going to put some wood filler in there to smooth it out and make it a flat surface and then that covers up that design, I like the rest of the designs, but those flowers just don't, I also forgot to mention that I bought this piece on Facebook Marketplace for eighty dollars and the way it is I wasn't too worried about paying eighty dollars for It's because I think once it's all done, I'll make a profit Really good.

Now is the time to clean well. I'm going to use it and this is a degreaser that will combat all the dirt, grime and dust. In fairly clean condition, but. There have been oils and greases over the years so we just need to remove them. This is one of the most important steps when painting furniture. Don't skip the cleaning step. I promise the paint will just get messy and won't adhere well, so just do it. I don't want to skip the step of cleaning your piece, okay, that was the disgusting water that was the first cleaning and now I'm going to take a clean rag with some clean water and rinse everything and it will still be dirty.

I just want to make sure I get all that cleaner off and then any last minute gunk I missed the first time. Okay, our next step is to start sanding a little bit and I'm just going to sand everything around and The reason is this top here is like a laminate top so it's not wood so I need to give it a little bit of texture and then I'm going to to put wood putty in the drawers. We will let it dry before applying a primer. So I'm going to start with these three drawers and I'm going to use 100 grit because I'm trying to sand this as flat as possible and then I'm going to put wood filler on it to dry before I start sanding everything else.

Yeah, and by the way, I'm going to use my surf prep sander because it's going to fit perfectly in that space, so I'm going to use the rectangle. Well, it was a little harder than I thought because the sander doesn't fit in there like I wanted, but we're ready to put the wood filler on so it can start drying, so I'm going to use the minwax wood filler that looks like this and I'm going to take a spatula. and I pushed that, I pushed the wood filler into the design. I try to use my spatula, but we all know our fingers work better, so I'm going to work that into the design and cover everything once it dries well in a couple of hours.
I will be able to sand it lightly, that should be enough for the wood filler. We'll let it dry in the sun for a bit and hopefully it won't take too long, but it should take about one to two hours. and then in the meantime I'm going to continue sanding the rest, okay the sanding is done so we're going to clean up all the dust and then we're going to start priming it's time to prime so I'm going to line my tray. with some aluminum foil to make it easier to clean, this aluminum foil is available at the dollar tree so it doesn't have to be expensive, so all you have to do is remove the aluminum foil and the cleaning will be finished, so for the primer I'm going to I'll be using the shellac based primer because it's a wooden

dresser

and I don't want that stain to come out and since I'm going to go green on this piece, I asked them if they could stain my primer just a little. because I thought that going from brown to white to green means that the white is going to be very difficult to cover with that dark green color.
They said they could dye the primer. I just picked the right guy, I think because I knew what he was. he was doing and he knew what he was talking about, so what they did was they just added three-quarters of an ounce of black paint to the primer and then that allowed it to get that grayish color. If you ask your people at your hardware store, they might say no, and I found out that the reason is that these cans are not meant to be stained or colored at all, so they fill them basically to the top with the primer, so there is no lots of room to add color to the dye, so it makes a lot of sense again, I just happened to find the right person to know about it and try it, so shout out to menards, here's a place that's more like a middle-of-the-road hardware store west, so let's start with the priming, not only will I use a roller, but I will also use a brush to get to those places where my roller can't reach, so do it, okay, I'm not done with the primer yet, but For this part I'm going to go check. those drawers that I put wood putty in should be dry by now so we're going to sand it down and apply a little primer so the wood putty is dry to the touch and not soft, it's hardened so I'm going to keep going. go ahead and sand it that way, we can prime this and hopefully this will make it flat and there won't be any dents from those flowers.
Okay, it really worked well, there are just a couple of points where I'm at. I'll probably just have to use one paper and I'll just do one corner, but to get the little edges here, this is nice and flat and we shouldn't even be able to tell it was there, so like I said, I'm going to use the

melange

paint for first time, so every time I use a paint for the first time I like to know a little about it. I just went to melange

paints

.com and I'm going to read a little bit about what or how to apply it to my piece, it's best to shake it well or stir it so you can use a little bit of water to thin it out, so I'll probably use my mister.
He says most colors take two to three. coats for full coverage, which is what I was assuming, so you'll probably only need to apply two coats and we'll clean it, sand it, even prime it. He says our paint is self-priming, so technically I guess I didn't. I need to do the primer, but I'll know for next time. I guess I should have looked this up before doing it, that he says if you have a slippery surface you can use an adhesion primer and then it will also help with the bleeding. So I guess I did a good job of applying the primer, a stain blocking primer, yeah cool, basically like any other chalk paint, this is not chalk paint but it is a craft mineral paint and it is water based , so I can use it.
My little sir, what was my main question, so let's open it and get started. I love the packaging of it. In reality, it is a very small business. I'm not really sure how long they've been around but I discovered them in March so I ordered this when they went on sale on the 17th of St. Patrick's Day, all their green colors and as you can see they have handwritten labels. I don't know, it's fun. They are coming out with tons of new colors too, I think they have. I have about 48, but I always add colors. It's just a beautiful green, it's like an almost emerald green, but not quite, so I'll probably put it in another container that way.
I can't help it on this one and I have a bit. of a larger area to wet my brush, I'm excited, okay, let's try it. I always get so excited and just want to start painting, but I want to sand the primer a little to get some of that off. texture to do that you just use a very fine grit sandpaper this is a sanding sponge I probably should have tried it without water because it seems to be thin enough to not even need water yeah I'm really trying to be careful of do nothing. puddles or paint drips along this edge here because they're not fun to deal with later once they dry, but I can tell you that I already love this paint.
I like to experiment with different

paints

and let you know what I think of them. This is definitely something everyone should try. Let's try a drawer without water, it works great without water too and then since we're in the sun, this dries immediately, so I think I'll probably stick with not using the water. because that dilutes it a little bit and then the stain is less pigmented, so I'm going to need more coats, so I'm not going to apply water for the rest of the dresser. The first coat of green is on and I'm going to let this dry and I'm going to work on the other drawers so I can add a little bit more wood filler and let that dry so we can paint those drawers a little bit too, okay , so basically I'm just going to repeat the same process I did before, except I'll try using a much thinner wood filler and just apply a level coat on the top surface.
This won't take as long to dry either, it just needs to dry before sanding. and we're going to give it some green paint now that we're back this wood putty is dry so we're going to sand it down and give these drawers the first coat and hopefully this time it'll smooth out okay now let's move on forward. and I'll put a little bit of paint on them and then while they're drying, I'll put the second coat on top of the rest. Coat number two is now finished on all parts of the dresser, so we need to let it dry for a while. a little update on melange paint.
I love it. I didn't use the entire bottle of this paint, so I had a little left over. I wasn't sure just because I had never used it before and this dresser was pretty big. but overall this paint is a really amazing first coat. I wasn't sure because there were brush strokes and things like that, but when I applied the second coat it definitely evened out and I'm really glad that it's still drying obviously, so you can see the different shades, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out. all. I have so much paint left out of the 16 ounces this glass jar holds, so it's not too bad for a dresser in my opinion and I'll have it.
To get the cost of this because I don't remember I bought it in March so I'm going to visit their website and update you at the end of the video to tell you how much it cost but it's definitely worth the investment. I'm going to go clean some brushes, you guys want to see how it's okay, so we're here in the kitchen, mom is cooking and I'm going to show you how to clean the brushes. But I have to be very careful because if I put this paint anywhere other than the sink and I don't clean up my mess, Mom is going to have my head, so basically what I do is I take the brushes and go ahead and just paint them.
I rinse first, I want to try to get all that paint from before, this paint was drying really fast in the sun, so this might color my brushes, which is fine. I'm going to get as much hot water as I can, as you can see, until the water dries up. It comes out clear at first I don't use my hands because the water is too hot so I run the water down a little bit to warm it up and then I just take my fingers and run them through again, it got colored. the brush, but it's not a big deal because it's not hard there, it's not crusty, so this brush is still the same as before, but it just has color, the bristles just got colored, so I go on, I take my dawn dish soap, put it in the middle of my palm and I take the brush and then I just rub it over and over again this should bring out some of the color and then we'll do the same with the other brush okay the water is basically running clear and then I'll show Guys, How do I hang them to dry?
Okay, now let's hang them here. I have a little nail sticking out and that's where I hang my brushes to dry, so washing the brushes isn't something I need to hold onto. Coming back from painting furniture isn't that hard, but if that's what's stopping you and you don't want to clean it, just throw away the brush, I guess that would be another option. I used to do that, but now I've learned that it's really not that hard, I just have to do it, it's the only thing I have trouble with. Let's check the hardware. Okay, the hardware is beautiful.
I'm just going to clean it up. We will use gilding wax for the first time. Dixie Bell time is golden so I'm excited to try it. Give them some pizzazz, so I've got it all here. I'm just going to put it in a bucket of sunrise dish soap and warm soapy water. Alright, the hardware is the first step, I guess it's done now, so we'll let it dry for a while and in the meantime, I'll go back to the dresser and we'll put a top coat on it, okay? I'm ready for top coat and I'm going to use the Dixie Belle clear coat in satin and I didn't end up ordering anytop coat on the Melange website just because I have tons so I wanted to try their paint. before we get into your top layers as well, so I'm going to use this satin, I just want a little bit of shine, not too much, I don't want to use shiny and then flat, I just want to try the satin again, so let's throw it in a new container here, clean container.
I have seen other furniture lovers recommend this and what you should do is if you are using a darker color. color paint, you can add just a little to the top coat to get less cloudiness and less streaky brush strokes than if you were just going to apply the top coat, so we'll add just a little to the mix. If you lift it up, it'll look a little weird, sorry because it's like I'm going to turn the top layer green, but let's give it a try and see if it works. It looks weird. It's very important with the top layer you have. don't let it build up in any one area and build up because then it will dry in chunks so you want everything to be nice and smooth so here I just want to smooth it out the first top coat is done.
I'm coming. To do one on everything but the top, I'm going to go ahead and apply a second top coat when the first one dries, so now we're just going to let that dry. We're on layer number two on top, I usually do just one. at the top, but I think I should probably start doing two, it's all done now, I just have to dry it off and I'm going to check the hardware, we're going to go ahead and polish this up, which just means going over it with a rag and it'll become a little bit brighter and then we can go ahead and put it on to remove all the excess and then this doesn't need a top coat because it's wax so it's just going to stay. and after it dries, you don't have to worry about it coming off, like the look it gives when it's not completely covered, but it's like there are still some areas that are darker, so I was thinking it was a bit of work extra. to brush all of that here, but I like the result of this and I think I'll really like it in or on the piece as well, so okay, this is all polished, we need to remove the tape from the drawers, put the drawers in and I put the hardware.
I'm excited so I did something stupid and when I was putting wood putty on the front of this drawer I covered the hole for the hardware so I'm going to re-drill the hole. let's put this gold hardware on now, okay the hardware is on, it looks amazing, this green is bold, the gold brings it all together, I love it, this is a bold, bold, bold move for me, I have no idea how it's going to go my market. Take this, I haven't sold anything like this before, we'll see, well we did it again, we posted it on Facebook Marketplace and 12 hours later someone had cut me off the full price and they're picking it up next week.
I'm excited that my market took this well. I haven't deleted the post yet because I like to leave it alone a little longer to evaluate and see how many people are interested, so I'll keep saying pending. pick for a few more days and that only allows me to gather what my market likes, so I already received three or four other inquiries and I had to say pending collection, but that shows me that people enjoy this green and gold, so that gives me a little more room to be a little bolder, so that's what I mean when I say test your market, see what people like, I got the full asking price of four hundred and fifty dollars, so After paying eighty dollars for this piece on Facebook Marketplace and after spending twenty dollars on the paint, I made a total profit of three 350 dollars for one dresser, guys, a complete review can be done on the melange paint.
