Toyota GR Yaris Circuit Pack real world review. Plus first go in the 300bhp Litchfield GR Yaris

Jun 05, 2021
welcome to a new video from harry's garage and today's car is this the

toyota

gr

yaris

. I

real

ly wanted to have this car. I had it for a week and enjoyed it immensely and it's one of those rare cars that just doesn't. I don't get these homologation specials like we used to in the past. I remember back in the '90s when we were road testing cars, performance cars and in the early days of the evo, we still had these homologation specials along with the integrale evo one and two, the subaru in a pretzel. We had 22b and then we had the Toyota Seleca GT4, all very special cars and all born from

world

rallies.

These cars you had to compete with on a base, a manufactured car, a car that you built in numbers, but the manufacturers were allowed to build some extra ones. specials to compete next year and this is basically what this

yaris

is and I think we have to thank the president of

toyota

ikea toyota because he is passionate about cars and toyota won the

world

rally championship in 2018 and in a way caused a idea, as I understand it, he wanted to make a

real

rally car for season 21 and he got together with Tommy Mackin and Racing, who make their rally cars at Toyota and basically created this homologation special and then turned it into a road car.

More Interesting Facts About,

toyota gr yaris circuit pack real world review plus first go in the 300bhp litchfield gr yaris...

Instead of taking the street car and turning it into the Raleigh Special, I wanted to do it the other way around, a rally car that could also be a street car and this is a lot of detail. Yaris in the corners is almost a misnomer. Normal Yaris has five. doors to start this is a three door car it has a chopped roof it's much lighter all sorts of interesting details so let's go and take a closer look now the

first

thing i want to point out on this car it's really small for the performance guy which it has is just under four meters long three nine nine five thousand long and to give you an idea of how small it is, well, the lancia integrale was three eight nine eight, so just four inches shorter than this and That's from an earlier time.

That's from the '80s. If I put a Porsche 992 part in there, they're about fifteen feet long, so it's just under four feet, but the most important thing is that it has the wheels right in the corners, so the wheelbase is actually longer than you would expect. it is a wheelbase of 2560, but the integrality was 2479, that is, 60 thousand shorter than this, but a 992, a wheelbase of a porsche 992 2450, a wheelbase significantly shorter than that of this yaris , even though it is half a meter long, so they have done very well in the

pack

aging of this car. I also have a 60 mil wider track, but the key difference between a normal trim, this is the aluminum two-door doors and this roof line that has been cut down, is about 65 mil lower, I think it's for that can do tricks with aero.

So you get a bigger wing etc. on world rally cars, but on this one it just gives you this unique profile and this masculine appearance, we move to the front, we see the wide track on this car, this big mouth, all kinds of intercoolers are needed. to power this three-cylinder 1600 engine that makes 257 horsepower, although I had Litchfield here doing modifications on the gr yaris and I actually had it in the garage and they realized that they were actually making about 267 horsepower when they put it Curiously, in Japan they are rated at 267 horsepower, so I wonder if the European car has basically the same power as the Japanese ones, but yes, that engine needs a lot of power and that is what is happening with these also big ones . brakes in this car, that's what those shots are, there's also front radar and cameras, there's all kinds of technology in this car, which is now mandatory in modern cars, lane changing and emergency braking and that kind of things, and this car has it all. here the aluminum hood here the headlights from the Yaris which are apparently one of the few parts left on the car that is the Yaris, so there are those mirrors and that fun little shark tail antenna on the roof.
It has the

circuit

pack

on this Yaris range in the UK. only for a little under 30,000 pounds if you want the

circuit

package which gives you torsion differential, center locking differentials and circuit suspension as they describe it I think it's stiffer springs and red calipers on your super brakes and forged wheels , which saves about 30 kilos I'm told, so you'll pay £33,500 including that price, it's actually on the road, there's 870 road tax in the

first

year for this car, it's quite expensive, but you get tires Sports driver 4s, I think the best tires. On this side of the cup too, so there's a very useful Michelin tire on this car.
Fantastic brakes. You will also notice that they are rusting. They are like old Porsche brakes that rust overnight. I drove this car yesterday, but what do you think? I know it almost looks like it's been sitting still for a month, but it hasn't. I should have mentioned that the roof is actually carbon fiber and it also looks like woven carbon fiber, but it really isn't, it's a vinyl cover they put on it, but that saves three or four. kilos too, yes, come to the back and see this little windshield, it actually needs a bit of wiper because the conditions have been very bad during the week I've had it and it soon gets dirty and there's no way to clean it, but you get a five-year warranty and that's pretty special.
Robust Toyota cars have part of the lightning anyway. This is also aluminum, but this plastic is very thin. They have saved a lot of kilos by using ultra thin plastic. just special homologation stuff in the boot where you don't get the bigger boots as you imagine the seats fold down but it's quite shallow because there's a lot of mechanical stuff underneath and the battery is in the back. Also, it's actually worth talking about the rear suspension on this because I put it over the hole at home because I just wanted to see how to do it.
A ratty car needs a lot of suspension travel. That's what they do. They fly. in the air they have big compressions to swallow, so they need more suspension travel than a normal track car or something and if I look down here and the forks at the back turn from here, you want a really long fork because that allows that the rear wheel goes up and down and doesn't deform, whether the geometry stays upright, another car that was very similar to this one was actually when it had an integral that has super wide whispers and it's all part of the rally in pedigree, but anyway I just want to show you the engine, the first thing you notice is the aluminum hood, it's so light it's remarkable how they reduced the weight of this car, um 1280 kilos, and that actually makes it lighter than the Lancia Integrale that I have.
As I mentioned above, they were evo 2s which weighed around 1340 kilos, so being lighter than a 90s car is quite notable. Wonderful 1600 cc three-cylinder engines. They had to get permission for the fia to run this car. You can just tell it apart. It's a little twin cam, it's the two cams, there's a little injector on top of the spark plugs, it's super compact, really light, they claim it's the lightest 1600cc engine in the world and it makes all that power, 256 horsepower. of force and a lot of torque. It's got 266 pound-feet of torque too, anyway, driving is what this car is all about, so let's take it outside now, well, what did you find here?
Well, first of all, the seats, they're, they're pretty nice seats, um, They're kind of grippy, the ultimate Alcantara suede, they seem to call it at Toyota Land. It feels good. Good size wheel. Smaller wheel than you would expect. 2.3 turns from lock to lock, so you don't have to turn much. Quite a few buttons. on the steering wheel and the manual gearbox that sprouts from the middle, very close to the steering wheel, it's the first thing you notice, although the seating position is high, um, yeah, I'm right underneath, as low as I can, a little bit high there. but the shock is actually when you go to the passenger side because he's so high up, in fact, I could go over there now that we have, I'll just turn this camera, oh, I don't know if you can see that. try this one so yeah there we go um yeah so I'm sitting here and I'm right on the roof and there's no height adjustment on the passenger side and it feels very strange it's like you've sat on a cushion or something like that. but no, that's the position, it's quite different from the driver's side, right, I'm going to go back to the other side now, um, keyless, too, it all starts with the button, when it's the right key, come on, get in the car .
Just pull the door handle and it opens. The Yaris appears on the dashboard. Avoid excessive acceleration due to temperature. I guess that's the temperature of the engine, it comes out every time you drive it. Actually, I'll just turn down the calm and the fan, um no. heated seats and stuff, I mean I also noticed that in the seats they have airbags and the first thing that surprises you is how much equipment is in this car, you know, I mentioned all the cameras and the speed, it shows the speed up there, um it has this big screen here and like it has a button that says the map function is not available, yeah, it's a strange combination.
If you order the card they remove the navigation from that big screen which is strange, it comes with a convenience package. for some reason, but I still have cruise control here, a pretty good stereo, it works with Apple Play so you know you can use your phone apps etc, while yes there is a plug-in USB point, a small shelf here, something practical. You don't really want to sit in the back either unless you're five feet tall because that sunken roofline compromises the rear seats quite significantly, but that's not what this car is about, it's about the handling, so let's get out there anyway. yes conventional handbrake yes there are some points to the handbrake because it is a handbrake that actually works and also it has a very mechanical feel to the gearbox which is a good thing and it has a low gear.
You know, I'm almost tempted. I'm only going 24 miles an hour. I'm tempted to put it in thirds, so that's fine too anyway. I'm going to do the usual. I'll come out and you'll join me later on some better roads. It's a pleasant noise. It makes a real three-cylinder sort of hum. I don't know, three cylinders, five cylinders, ten cylinders, having an odd number of cylinders always seems to be a good thing in a car, yes, I have read that it is broadcast through speakers, but I can show you, sitting here, that it sounds good, the other stuff.
You might notice that this is my loudest stretch of road and I've measured it at 60 miles per hour here and it's about 76 77 decibels so it's not the loudest car ever, but yeah, there is a reasonable amount of raw tires and it is not. Really surprising when you look underneath because basically the secondary mounts for the entire suspension are bolted to the body, very little rubber is used in the suspension, it has a motorsport feel when you get under it, yes I notice there are even adjustments for towing rear and I have it degrees on a nut underneath, you can adjust it, it's there labeled for you to short shift again, yes it's good visibility, a lot of people noticed this when you look out the windshield just as I'm coming out of the roundabout.
On the left you have this big mirror and this big screen and it's a bit oversized and I'm really surprised that the motorsport one has it, yeah it's pretty tight, you wonder why it's so big but I guess it was a matter of cost that, um. you know, give them all the toys, why not, because then it's actually cheaper than trying to make something smaller and custom made, something else you can choose, the circuit has a stiffer suspension and you just notice it swaying and it feels like that. you feel the road surface, there's not much cushioning just going through town like this, it actually changes with speed, I can't get past the radar equipment and things like that, yeah, stop, start, it just did that, but the dashboard actually also shows the tower pressure, so you have control of the tire pressure on this car.
You also have a torque split. It tells me what the torque is doing between the axles and of course I have a way to change that, so. m only in normal configuration I have 60 front 40 rear you can have 50 50 if you go to the track or what everyone thinks they want is sporty because that's 30 front 70 rear not that it actually becomes a good car with oversteer if you do it beams If you have it in sport mode, it turns a little red on the dashboard, although a little uphill. I'm doing 30. I'm going to put it at a pretty interesting second, where the second peaks, so it's already 25 miles this way. three thousand five hundred rpm, here we go, it only goes to 16 seconds, it feels fast. um it's number one when I first drove these or a couple of agomonths, the first impression was that it was chipped and it was not chipped. that's how it feels as standard, it's a proper grunt to worry about, what about the free cylinders at 1600cc?
It has 260 horsepower and 1280 kilos, that is 200 horsepower per ton and it is turbocharged, it also has great torque and the combination of the two means Yes, it just feels faster than you expected. I just noticed the latest mpg was down to 28.9. I was going to say I was surprised that it's around 29-30 in normal use on the page and it actually has a range and you have a 50 liter tank but it gives you a range of 240 miles or something so yeah it's really Pretty sensible if you have your sensible shoes on and are thinking about how I would justify this car well.
It's pretty good on fuel it's pretty small for parking and things like that it has a lane departure warning I also swerved to see if I can get it to turn off here we go I have it but you have a button on the steering wheel that you hold down and everything disappears and then I think which is really good the road you can turn it off, which really dials, that's how you become here when you turn with this quick steering and you just shoot it into a corner, the poise, the grip, you just feel it, that's what you want to do , crouches and does not crawl.
No nothing, it's very impressive now on a road like this after having driven the modified Litchfield car, this is where it scores in a car on a road like this with kind of typical b-roll, lots of potholes, that's why I use this path. The car just shakes from time to time on the bottom and when I drove the Litchfield car, the Nitron suspension had been based on Nitron just around the corner for me, so development has been happening on these types of roads, the spring dampers suddenly add finesse. I mean, it's not like this car has a questionable chassis set up straight from the factory, but the Litchfield one, they lowered it 45 grand in the front, 40 of them sorry, 45 in the rear, 40 in the front and their Clarity is changing. but then its ability with its fancy shock absorbers to smother the bumps and not react like this car does is impressive and it's been yeah, the only way I can explain it is that this is fantastic anyway, it's sitting on a glass of champagne , you know, drinking champagne and then someone. it gives you a vintage champagne and it's a little bit more beautiful and that's what the Litchfield suspension feels like on a road like this.
It's um, I think it's 2,400, it's just under 3,000 installed, but the geo, the combination of the geo and the trick shocks. It really makes it very special and that price actually looks like it's the price of a shock on my project eight, so it's not a bad value for what you're actually getting, but around here it just grabs and I can add the power. I like rally cars because they are only made for road use, you can go a little crazy with circuit cars but this is a real hoot in the sport, all you need is power here, it takes a huge amount of abuse to get any kind of traction loss on this car even with the very impressive 30-70 split, it's probably time to sum up the thoughts on this car and starting with what I don't like, well I had problems for a while, like I was looking at what I'm going to say, they are negative about this car, I think the one that I What I would do is that when you are speccing this car, it's annoying that you can't pick out the good parts of it.
The people I know who have bought this car so far have a collection of cars. I don't know why it's really caused a There's a lot of excitement and I think it's because we don't get these types of cars very often and they might want the navigator, they might want a better sound system, some of the convenience factors, the parking sensor, the blind spot, you know, I don't. I don't know, I'm surprised you can't take some of those options, so you can tell, because with a price tag of around £30,32,000, there's some wiggle room, you can see the fact that you're actually getting premiums for this one. car.
People are willing to pay more for it to begin with so I would have liked it, I guess it's not the prettiest car but then it has a purposeful stance and I like the fact that it's a Toyota and it runs so well. I don't really care now this is one of the favorites these are the apps that are going to nail these bends over here I'm going to move on there pick the second one oh, it gives you a little dark problem, it's quite difficult to cure, it's just extraordinary. how it can move there, so it reminds me of the days when we had pro drive type impresities and that kind of thing coming our way, we couldn't believe the capacity of the chassis, this unwavering feeling here and it drives through its Exactly the same with this other minor dislike, well it's quite noisy, I guess transmission and road noise, but I know the reasons behind this so I'm not that worried about it, I think it's time to talk about tastes, well i think we'll start with the price, just the sheer capability of this and the fact that it's authentic, it's a homologation special, it was really born from wrc, tommy mcenan and mr toyota together enthusiasts how can we make this car rally toyota and then sell some road cars? cars, that authenticity shines through absolutely everything in this car, you go underneath it, you see the quality, the components they've used and just the ability on the road and the price is unreal, it's like when the alpene came out too, but what I like it the most I guess about this car is that link with Iran.
This is a real deal. The alpha pin was not developed for racing. It was just a really nice road car, but this has reasons to be, although that will change the rules, but we. I'll ignore that, I think it will still go to rallies and then the performance is 8th level performance, five and a bit at 60, but it feels punchy all the time, it's not stupidly fast, it's just adequate performance, speed limited to 143 miles per hour, um. I mean the Litchfield car they had. They are making some kind of bolt-on ecu re over reader that supposedly has 300 horsepower, but it's not what I would do first with this car.
I would lower it and get that. pure cornering ability from that geo there are no springs or shocks long before you touch the engine because it just feels like it's running. I also like the sound, the thumb of those three cylinders and it's a good noise this car makes, I don't. I mind if it's not actually a true induction sound from where I'm sitting, it just makes you smile and you can't ask for the exhaust not to be too loud, but I think that's to your advantage these days. a driver gets the most noise and the most fun out of this car, so in conclusion, it's just a wonderful device, but out of nowhere, a big thank you to the president of Toyota for signing off on those checks and giving this enthusiast around the world, unfortunately, not in the US.
At the moment this gem of a small car, everything is priced right, power, capability, sounds great and is rare like a desert of electric cars and supposed sports cars, two-wheeled sports SUVs tons more, etc., 1280 kilos, how did they do it with all this safety equipment? the 1600 engine makes 260 and some horsepower, did they get that 30 mpg? I just don't know what more you could ask for and it has a style. A lot of people say it's the new Impreza, but to me it actually feels like the new one. Lancia Integrale The only problem I had with the Impreza was that it was a four-door saloon.
The Integral always had a little more freshness just because of the shape and it was Italian and stuff, the capacity was from the Impreza, but this car is a mix of the boat, it has the capacity of the impreza in a sexy body like the integrale and this will be a cult car in the future it's a bit nerdy but not as nerdy as maybe the nissan gtr so it sits somewhere really Good place said there will be a production run of 25,000 to start but I think they are hinting there could be a continuation. Can you imagine a GR Yaris Evo in 2022?
Well, I hope so, but right now this is the car of the moment and it deserves all the praise it gets. I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did, keep watching and subscribing, more videos will be coming soon.
