Tornado devastates East NashvilleMar 04, 2020
one of the areas that was hit hard, of course, is East Nashville. Channel 5's Chris Conte is there live right now and shows us what he's watching. It's been so devastating to see what you're running into. Chris, you've taken us from East Nashville to Germantown. and to set the damage back here by five points is amazing this was vintage Music City was a vintage store that a couple of local people had opened it completely collapsed in on itself you can see the members of the store are actually here trying to get parts of the business, whatever they can salvage so they can reopen, but it's going to be incredibly difficult, it's impressive when you look over here and see what five points looks like in the light of day.
South 10th you can see the back of boom baz pizza here to give you some perspective there was a structure here was a garage that flipped over on itself the battered and fried sign can s Here we are in the back of the police metropolitan Drifters as you can imagine they are being very careful not to let people into this specific five point section there are a number of NES teams out here trying to get the power back or at l
easttry to take some of it off the highway power lines but look I mean this is just amazing we were talking to the mother of the young gentleman who opened this store with his girlfriend a while ago and they were just saying they are so incredibly grateful they didn't want to go through with this kinda so incredibly thankful there was no one here that this happened at 12:30 at night we've been talking a lot about the fact that it was pretty scary for ra People last night because they couldn't see exactly what was going on.
The saving grace in all of this though was that this section of East Nashville wasn't incredibly populated it wasn't super busy like it normally would be you can see people from over the edge we're really you here trying to cook some meals give something away of free food to people who are trying to get back on their feet here i have still seen a series of hugs which has perhaps been the bright light that saves in all of this the spirit and attitude of East Nashville is alive and well the people are here for real, a lot of people are not working today and they come here trying to help each other get back on their feet.
We heard from the Five Points Business Alliance that those businesses that weren't affected or weren't around because of this will rally around the businesses that were hit hard some people of course getting back on their feet will simply mean taking back the power in other places like this tattoo shop and this vintage shop are going to be a long time before they recover. I mean there's nothing in this building that's going to be habitable again. I just want to say that it's remarkable, ladies, look, only the top frame of this building was smashed. means this is a huge massive steel structure that must weigh thousands of tons and now just a thing tipped over I've seen a number of times as we walked around here our people sitting there stunned it's been a long night right we've been there since 12:00 last night now we're getting closer to 12:35 here and it's still amazing to see the scope of this I mean there's a misconception I think it comes a lot where people think a
tornadocould never hit a major metropolitan area unfortunately we now know that's not true of course it wasn't true before but it's hard to understand how a storm of this magnitude could pass through an area like this but again I just want draw your attention to the people who are here helping each other.
I'm taking pieces out of this house that I can tell have been here for decades because of the way the roof is trying to just kind of take out as much as you can while trying to find at l
eastbits of their lives. Souvenirs. I've seen people taking out photo books. Photo albums. thrown away and there's so much that's been lost here just amazing women to really see what those storms did here last night and we'll send it back to the studio
