Feb 27, 2020
We are back on the

17th

and what a scene it is the galleries surrounding many have been here. I was here at 9 o'clock this morning looking at all the locations of the people who were already claiming spots. Danny, those are the action boxes over there. Gary. It's a great place to be and this is a crescendo for all those people. It's Gary from 9 o'clock, when Tiger shows up, that's exactly it, they're certainly excited right now. I will say we look down from the top and Johnny, I've seen several players putt from the back of the screen and the results have mostly not been good.

I like Tom Kyte, way to the right, well the ball wants to break left at the top once it goes down the slope it moves. hard to the right and picks up speed well, it seems like when Tiger gets really involved in something difficult he usually does it very well and he should be pretty involved here, he certainly needs to be, you can see where he's standing right now Gary that's the front of the ridge, so it's almost a completely flat putt up there and then for the last 20 feet from where Tiger is now to the

hole

, it's very fast and, like he said, it turns hard to the right, it allows us do, Gary, let's order. a little further and then comes back a mess, but, Johnny, he goes so far to the right as he goes down that hill that that's where the players have been tricked.

More Interesting Facts About,

tiger woods 17th hole tpc 2001...

I mean, you have to be three four feet away. to the left of the

hole

as he goes over the ridge and most guys just haven't seen that he almost needs to fake it. Gary looks to me like the hole is at the top of the ridge, like you said, four or five, maybe even six. feet to the left of the hole and try and just barely roll it there, I almost forget where Steve Williams is standing there next to the cup, like what I'm doing there is just swinging the putter visualizing trying to follow the line he wants not to be seen. like he's pointing left, he'll break a little to the left at first Johnny, that's better than most.

It's better than most. Better than most. Johnny. I think it's safe to say you can hit that putt 50 times and maybe make it once. It was just another Tiger moment, one of the great long putts I've ever seen, I remember at the '94 US Amateur Championship where Tiger started this whole magical quest that we, with the ammeter six down, we actually took the lead for the first time. of the 12-foot birdie putt, but I was just on this island green, yeah, the fact that he almost fell into the water hit him from off the green. Now this will show you how good the Tigers' putting was.

Phil Mickelson, known for his putting. and he doesn't have to deal with almost what Tiger does there you go there you go watch this ball go away from the hole Gary to show you how good Fred Funk was a moment ago before this I think he took four putts up here on the

17th

green, let's take one more look at this putt, I was surprised how far it went left, well there's a brown on the hill right there, Johnny, who actually hits it left and he's the first guy I've ever seen that's made the putt. ball so far left. the hole, you know, even if this ball doesn't go in, it goes six or seven feet down that slope on the green, but it's fun to watch, it just slides down the right side and his reaction right now, how's that?
Yeah, it's still the same punch that we saw in '94 on that green, Gary, yeah, how about the up and in on the 16th and then that over there is these three four shots picked up on the course. That is an example of how difficult this 17th green is to make a putt from above, we have seen several players make precisely those three putts, so Phil makes a bogey and falls to 2 under par. Tiger makes an improbable birdie now at 10 under par, 7 under par in his round and only two out. the lead and Gary, what makes it equally impressive is that he was in the water on that hole yesterday almost put him in the water again, but none of that clogs his mind, he buries an almost impossible putt, he has consecutive birdies.
At 10 under par he is alone in second place and now moves on to the most difficult hole here.
