Thrift Store Makeover #4

Jun 04, 2021
Hi, it's me, today is a

thrift

store

makeover

, but technically it's a little bit different, a little bit more, because this. I actually found it at a garage sale, not a

thrift

store

, why are you petting it? It's basically the same. I'm giving it a

makeover

, so it doesn't really matter at all, so it's a wooden carousel hanging on the wall with lots of different ornaments added. frills is the right word, I don't think so, honestly it's a bit hideous just a bit, I think it's just that it's very dated, even the lady I bought it from was like oh, don't you want that?

Okay um sharek you probably had this lying around in your attic for about 20 years just look at the nice layer of dust and dirt and it has this very pretty lace lining the edges some very dull colors where is all the contrast where is the pop where there is the vitality it is very boring I think the lace is responsible for the strong musty smell it is lovely down here we find the three horses, each one has a crispy nest of ribbon and pearls. It's a little wild. This one has a darling little rose, but I guess the other two fell off. hang things I guess very small things a Barbie bag or a hat for a mouse I don't know well maybe jewelry actually yes that would work and a lot more dust and dirt yes so my first step will be to remove all the decorations that I am I'm just going to take them off, this one was a little more stubborn, send reinforcements, I've got the rose, there they go on the last one.

More Interesting Facts About,

thrift store makeover 4...

Hey, so the ribbon spiders are going to a wonderful land called the garbage dump, now to take care of this lace. I'm going to turn it around, oh there's a price tag apparently at one point it sold for 399, no one cares so let's keep our fingers crossed that this cord is going to come off, yeah it's there pretty good, yeah , there we go once I found a weak spot it came off a little easier with that moldy lace and I also have to remove it at the bottom honestly I'm impressed with how well this glue has held it it's strong I had to use a knife in some the points don't cut towards you there you go cutting the glue and here is the final stretch, yes, it's quite satisfying to see that, but there are still all these snots of glue, so I used my knife, this knife will definitely win the MVP today.

I'm just trying to remove those big chunks of glue as carefully as possible without chewing the wood or hurting myself Ali and well, you can't see anything that's going on here, that's fine, there's nothing to see here, move on, too I took care of some. of the glue on the back which won't be visible at all because this thing will be hanging on the wall so that doesn't really matter but yeah, still wasting your time. I don't mind getting into Darth now. Vader mode, what's going on? I'm going to sand this a little to try to remove and smooth out the rest of the glue residue.

Yes, I'm a poet, so at first I started with very coarse sandpaper to take care of everything. dirty job and then I went in with some finer sandpaper to smooth it out a little better and now there's even more dust covering everything than before, so let me clean all that up. I simply cannot work in these conditions. Oh, someone's panties. I got stuck in the void, those are mine, get it out of there, so now who likes that magic trick? No, that wasn't good. I'm taking a wet paper towel and just wiping it all off, wiping away years of dirt and skin cells from other people that I don't know, we just need a fresh start here and as you can see a lot of dirt came out of this so it's a good feeling and now I'm getting a little obsessive, are we surprised?
Hmm, no. I'm using a feather duster to clean between my legs, that's always very important. Now is the time I really start looking at these legs, what are these legs like? What is that shape? They are some crazy legs, aren't they? Finally, this thing has been. Naked, scrubbed and bathed I think he already looks a hundred times better. I like it, so that completes my thrift store makeover. I hope you enjoyed Cape. I know I'm just getting started, so here comes my cast. That wasn't me. That was the cast. and my workout for the day has to stay in shape, you know, so here's Jess.
Oh, I'm not really sure why I intend to show this on camera, but yeah, I'll keep it there. I guess there is a plaster, now applying plaster is one step. that you take before you paint is just a primer and this is acrylic gesso so it's an acrylic paint primer because it will actually help the paint go on nice and even and it also makes it easier to paint over a solid white background instead of a darker color. If you don't use gesso, you may see a little more streaking when you paint, the paint may not adhere as well depending on what you're painting on, and you may have to apply a couple more coats of paint, but you'll still you can make Getting the gesso working is not absolutely critical, but I have it so I will use it again.
I'm making sure it gets into all the cracks. Jessica loved those Crazy Legs so I bought this pretentious sounding piece so I bought this piece of junk for my art room. I actually don't have any tapestry there at the moment, so I've been looking for some and thought this would be just perfect. You know, once I boot everything up and completely change everything, it looks really nice. bone structure, shape is really good, Crazy Legs are a little questionable, but we can fix that. The only problem was that, in my opinion, it had too much nonsense crammed into it and it's just not fun and colorful enough for me.
It's a carousel carnival color, come on, so here it is all fresh and ready to paint. Oh, I love that pure white of a blank canvas ready to be decorated. What a beautiful view, so I'll use these Montmartre Marty brand acrylic paints. Menthe Marty, this is actually the first time I've read the brand name on these, so here I go. I'm going to mix up my colors and go for a lighter and darker version of each pink, yellow, and teal or blue-green. your choice and this will be my color scheme now before someone pronounces x' the word rainbow no, this is not rainbow as a rainbow fan.
I have a slight annoyance when people call things rainbows that simply aren't rainbows. I know they are. really mean and I shouldn't care at all I know, I know, I just can't just because something is colorful doesn't make it a rainbow. I think it has to have at least almost every color of the rainbow and they have to be in the right order okay and I've been talking about this for way too long and I've probably upset everyone so I'll stop now thanks for the horses . I painted them in slightly lighter versions of each of the colors which you can't really tell it's not that noticeable a difference maybe I should have made that difference a little more severe.
I don't know, but I don't care too much and the bottom is going to get very wild. I am drawing. Here I'm going to get really psychedelic and make swirls of color that travel all over the background like a liquid which was creepy, so here we're going to paint that now. I know there will be someone who comments on what I liked. It was better when it was just wood, it really comes out when you add all the color to it, which is totally fine, you can feel it like that. I happen to like decorating things and I enjoy going for a very colorful look and it's fun for me.
A fun moment. Could I have left it with bare wood? I'm sure it would have looked good like that, but you know this video probably wouldn't exist because it would have been so boring. I think I'm being too irritable today, let's not complain anymore. today let's just say positive things for the rest of the video well this footage is a little out of focus wow that wasn't positive I just keep painting this part reminds me of candy or something I don't know why but it just looks like I could eat it and here are some aesthetic closeups, you know what we have to do, someone in my last video commented that they missed that song and you know, I agree, it was time to listen to it again.
So that was for you now. I won't bother painting the horses' backs because this will stay on the wall and you know you'd really have to push your face against the wall and strain your eyes really hard to see the backs. of the horses I actually don't even know if you could, so I'm not going to paint the backs, but I want to make sure the sides are nice and covered, which is a little tricky, you really have to get in there, there's a lot of indentations so I get the brush now I'm going to apply a second layer on the bottom to try to tidy up that chaos.
I'm very happy with how the color combination turned out. I will say that I don't think they are completely accurate carnival colors. In fact, my nails are probably closer to the actual carnival colors, but still have that bright and bold carnival feel. Also a side note. I know carnivals aren't the only place to find carousels, you can find them at the damn mall, sometimes I'm just saying I went to a packed carnival, that's why I keep talking about carnivals. Well anyway, back to the video at the same time, it fits my kind of pastel aesthetic. I went back and forth on the color scheme a million times.
I do pink, orange and green and then pink, yellow and green, pink, yellow and blue, pink, green and blue and finally I decided on pink, yellow and teal. Tiffany, choose your option and a fun fact. In fact, for the first time in my life I perfectly planned how much paint I would use. I needed to cover this. I used every drop of paint I mixed and didn't need another drop. It was amazing, that never happens. I almost always have tons of leftover paint, but then, like six months later, everything is crusty and I have to throw away.
Anyway, it was a disaster, but yeah, wasn't that a fun fact? I feel like every time I say a fun fact, it's really just the most useless information and believe it or not, the painting is finished, can you believe it? Yes, I think it's incredible. So is it finished? It's finished? We're done now? No, add a few things to this. I actually received this from a super nice person who felt it in his heart to send me some craft supplies for no reason other than to be nice. It's basically just like a sparkly string and I'm going to use it to trim the edges of the roof of the carousel, so I'm going to grab my hot glue gun.
This is a massive decorating weapon and I'm going to slowly and carefully work around it. I try to be very careful because I don't want to make big balls of hot glue that are visible and ugly, which maybe happened once or twice. Possibly there is a better way to do this or a better glue to use for something that would be completely invisible. but i didn't know what to do where were you to help me you weren't there i was completely alone i had to work with what i had it's not a big deal you can barely see the glue and it's only in one or two places so this worked totally fine.
I'm just being dramatic for no good reason. I really like how this was added. I think it really made it come alive. It was totally a last minute add-on. I just felt like I needed something, so I opened my drawer of little glitters and found this and uh, it was just what I needed, lesson that's why it's good to stock up on craft supplies, you never know what you're going to need, no, that's not it. a good lesson. I also decided to add the rope that wraps around the horse posts. I don't know what their names are until I'm forced to give them stupid names.
I definitely should have applied the glue to the back so there was no chance of it being visible but you know, of course, I realized these things after the fact, when you know, too late, you dumb fool. Here I'm securing it on the back, yes the back is really ugly but we're okay with that, wait what the heck why are the backs? the painted horses I thought I didn't paint the horses' backs now I'm not going to bother painting the horses' backs, okay then and just trimming off the excess rope, the space is a little outside the wrapper, change direction to the half. which seems a little strange let's just say positive things for the rest of the video okay and you know this needs more little glitters so yeah I'm using a dotting tool to apply a little dot of Mod Podge at a time to glue them.
Little sparkles, stop saying little sparkles please, because the horses looked too plain and flat on me, so I wanted to glam them up a bit. Finally I'm applying a coat of Mod Podge, please don't spill it over everything. to seal everything and protect the paint from chipping, so we started with this moldy, dusty, creaky carousel and now it's fun, fresh and completely unique. I think it's a big improvement, so colorful and happy looking. I'm super happy with it and here I am posting it. it's on this very bare wall in my art room, yes I really love everything about it.
I think this is my favorite thrift store makeover I've done so far. In fact, I looked everywhere for somethingsmall enough to hang on those little pegs. but all I could find was a pair of soft minis from a long time ago. I have this blue cake roll with candy on top or sprinkles on top, so I guess it makes sense to leave them there. I hope you enjoyed this makeover. Thank you. Much to see and see you next Friday, goodbye.
