Kids love playing with

fire

truck

s but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a real

fire

fighter you my kids I'm a firefighter Dave man I'm not actually a firefighter but firefighters they really have agreed to let me pretend for the day so you and me are going to find out what it takes to be a firefighter and all about all the great gear they wear so what do you say we check it out most firefighters live in the fire station when they're on duty when they're not putting out fires they have chores to do just like the rest of us well you were asking me what it's like to be a firefighter firefighter Dave well I'll tell you what it's like it's probably the best job in the world I have I have had several jobs I have been with a fire service for about 15 years and I really enjoy it we work 24 hour shifts there are eight of us at our station so we have to get along this is my second family I have a family back home and i have a family in the fire service our actual workday starts at 8 o'clock we start doing what we call station and equipment maintenance every day we are responsible for maintaining the equipment maintaining the station mopping the floors cleaning the bathroom washing the fire

truck

s they make sure all the equipment is ready because when you call 911 the whole system breaks down barn emergency with the problem at your address is that announcer department and your name what's your phone number agatha ok here mate latrine and the fire department is ok 131 145 but 131 structure fire 500 This one is removed Slyzer series to remove three map pages of Sultana or D David when an emergency call comes in the firefighters have to be ready for action and if you're not ready, you're left behind.

Looks like firefighter Dave messed up the fire truck. I'll have to try to be faster next time. tell us a little bit about the specialized clothing they have to wear well fireman Dave let's start with the bottom of the outfit and we'll work our way up you'll notice the boots you have on are steel toed rubber boots those are to protect your feet from firefighters if you walk into a burning building many times there may be veils or glass or something of that nature so it helps protect your feet from sharp objects and also your toes are steel in case something falls on now the pants and the jacket you are wearing are made of a material called non-mats.

More Interesting Facts About,

there goes a fire truck...

This is a fire retardant material that helps reduce flames or heat on the uniform. You also wear the hard plastic helmet which helps protect your head just in case. of things falling from the sky that's our thing one thing to remember when you're inside a building on fire even though we've got all this good equipment on it's kind of a false sense of security when you walk into a burning building this the temperature can get really, really hot sometimes 1,200 degrees with all this protective gear on you're not really going to feel all that heat that's why firefighters work on what we call the buddy system go into a building together we protect each other if i see that he is getting into trouble or perhaps getting too close to the fire.

I can touch him on the shoulder and say, come on, fireman, Dave, let's go outside. He is getting too dangerous. That's why we wear the protective clothing that has in the helmet pants coat boots and also our gloves help us do our job a little better I guess we're ready to go put out a fire I bet oops! I guess I forgot to turn off the valve I guess you'd like to see that again, well I guess being a firefighter is as easy as I thought, from now on Firefighter Dave will leave firefighting in the hands of real firefighters.
there goes a fire truck
These big legs come off one by one to stabilize the fire truck so the big ladder can be put up in the air once these support legs are in place they prevent the truck from tipping over the firefighters preparing to lift the big ladder the operator needs to make sure there are no dangerous power lines getting in the way that the large ladder in the basket can pass thirty feet in the air a fire truck is a really complicated machine but in the cab it looks like much like a normal truck except there are a lot of buttons and switches that's one of the real firefighters to show me how they work a fire truck works fine Just like on a normal truck we have a lot of extra buttons to deal with and they I'll show what some of those buttons do today.
Up here we have buttons like the ones on your normal truck for lights and headlights and marker lights and stuff, but we also have a switch here that turns all the red lights on at the same time. I can turn those lights off individually if I want but one switch will turn them all on at the same time when I turn that switch on and then down here on the floorboard we have some buttons that if I press with my foot they will activate the siren and make the sirens oh and then here's another one or the air horn and then we've got one more What's here is another type of siren so we've got two and this siren is the electronic side we can turn it on just by flipping a switch here ok listen close you probably notice that fire trucks have different types of sirens and they come from different places on the fire truck this machine has three different sirens this here is the mechanical siren which is the main siren that you hear most of the time and right here this is one electronic siren that sounds more like an ambulance and they use it occasionally too now these are the air horns these are the big horns that want to warn cars to move away this is a fire truck and it's used to pump water now let's do what let's do we carry a couple of ladders and that's how we raid and where we keep them who cares where the firefighter sits and that's where he rides his way to the fire and in this compartment we just carry our water and that's so that when we're fighting a fire let's get a little dehydrated we can get some water we carry fuses and assorted tools and things in that compartment and then here we have what we call our engineers pump panel and this is where all the gauges and valves and things we can do have the water divert the water from one discharge to another or open another valve to let the water go from the hydrant to the pump here we carry extra air cylinders and these are the same cylinders we use in our breathing apparatus back here we have the engine that drives this motor makes it run and runs the pump we also have the hose we have our four inch hose and this is enough hose here on this post bed to go from here about five blocks down the street and on that side we have a hose two and a half inches and there is enough hose to run 12 football fields long and we use that hose to connect it to a fire hydrant and then draw water from the hydrant to where the fire is this is what we call a monitor this is what we use on large fires because it can flow a thousand gallons of water a minute you can move it to any side of the engine we want and it's so powerful it can tear down walls in these compartments here we keep our first aid supply and we use them because going out with a lot of people who have been injured or are sick and this is basically what we need to take care of them one of the most dangerous jobs of being a firefighter is working in the bond squad this is the vehicle that pulls the trailer that has the container that holds the bomb now this is where they put the bomb if they think it could explode this mechanic is very very thick as you can see and it is V shaped so that if the bomb explodes it explodes in the air it does not go out to the sides where it can hurt people or working out the clothes the bomb squad wears is really interesting what do you say? let's take a look at that is what we call a self containment suit or a bomb suit lawnman

goes

up to work on a suspected bomb he has to wear this suit as you can see down here over his boots he has this part of the suit to protect his feet real strong right here this protected leg

goes

up and they're sort of coveralls this protects his body in case the bomb goes off now he's wearing a jacket that goes over this and what we'll do now we'll take his jacket off now this is very very heavy hey and as you can see it completely protects you when you have this step right under here go ahead put your helmet on it's good and ready to work on a device it's fully protected in case something happens it looks like an astronaut Fire boats are also used to fight some fires that they enter. all shapes and sizes look at the piece of equipment you see behind me it's a fire its main function is to transport men and heavy equipment to the scene of the fire it does not carry water it does not carry coal all the equipment on it is used primarily to force enter the operation salvage and overhaul now will zoom in a little closer look a little closer start by taking a look at the cockpit this is where the captain in the engineer directly in the fire apparatus the engineer drives and operates the unit the captain of course in charge of the crew of this particular team we have four men captain and engineering and firefighters the firefighters come up again in this area this is known as a fold down seat you can see they are facing the rear we got a call the firefighter receives in the unit is putting on this coat mr. pants, her other gear, she's also putting on her breathing apparatus that way when we get to the scene of the fire, she's ready to go to work, she just has to get off the unit and she's ready to go in this particular compartment, as you can see we've got what appears to be a large fan which is exactly what it is this is a gasoline powered smoke ejector when we go into a building it's smoky we have to get the smoke out for the firefighter to get in and fight against the choir we do this using these big fans we carry two of these in the unit this is the compartment that contains the levers that operate our stabilizers and everything going up and down the ladder behind this sheet up here where we keep all our labs all the stairs, but you know all of our labs 16:20 put the big 40 foot ones on this side, another 16, another 20 and 35 foot also in this compartment and they're a little hard to see but if you look really closely up here we have what what we call a Pike pole long poles with a hook on the end we use those poles will mount roofs inside a building if you need to go up into the attic area ok now I'm in the unit basket as we told you earlier this will go 100 feet in the air you'll see this big red thing here that's a nozzle there's basically no difference between these nozzles and the nozzles you have at home on your garden hose the only difference is these nozzles are just a little bit more large works on the same principle we can flow at max gallons to thousand gallons per minute through this nozzle and all you have to do to operate it is turn it like this and you will get a wide pattern or you can get a very sharp defined pattern by turn this wheel you can turn it left or right by loosening it as you can see up and down this piece of equipment is mostly used in the big fire building where we need to get up above the fire and shoot water on it literally put out the fire another important piece of equipment used to fight fires is the helicopter that helps with rescues and movement of equipment and can also carry small amounts of water now this one is big there are many different types of fire fighting vehicles this one it's an airport fire truck and as you can see not all fire fighting vehicles are red this is one of the biggest fire fighting trucks it's yellow it costs almost half a million dollars and it's for fighting some types of very special fires hi I'm Mike Strauss I'm with the Ontario Airport Fire Department and today you're looking at one of the biggest trucks in the fire service today.
This particular vehicle is specifically designed to fly in an airport. What that means is that if there is a plane crash, we will move on. and roll, get this truck out and we're going to throw water at it specifically designed for airport firefighting and what we have here at the front or what we call two turrets and what they do, they just throw water from here and in here on top when they have water sports at a rate of about 1,200 gallons per minute and that's about 15 to 20 full tubs of water per minute and the bottom throws out a little bit lower rate of about 500 gallons per minute and what's also coming out of the water is what we call home like if you take a bubble bath you have like foam sitting on top of the water and that's what comes out of this too ok now we're inside the cabin we weren't accessible and so we can communicate with the tower which tells us if there is a plane on the way or not and to communicate with other firefighters and other fire trucks and inside the cabin we controlmost of our firefighting by what we call joysticks and they're like a basic video game in your videos in your video stores or whatever and you can control most of your firefighting turrets that I showed you earlier but moving the joystick back and forth and it will spew water in whichever direction you turn it's all here it's basically like driving a normal car you have the accelerator and brake and gear stick steering wheel and horn different types of fire engines they wear different types of protective gear as you can see I have a yellow going and you guys here at the airport wear silver cups right they are basically designed for the same thing protect you when you walk into a fire the reason they are there lighting to reflect the heat a bit. a little bit more than standard Nomex fire fighting and they're a little bit heavier they're aluminized suits so they're a little bit heavier they can hold a little bit more heat they reflect a little bit more heat because they had a fire when it burns , it burns close to 2,000 degrees so the fuel itself allowed us a little bit more time to be able to fight the fire very closely when we have down here they are basically the same with pants and everyone has the normal fire boots and well , here's a question for you Dave, do you know why firefighters have red suspenders?
Hold the pants. Oh thanks, take a couple sips of manhood, yeah okay, at this training center future firefighters are learning the skills they'll need to do their job properly and safely. make the call 10 apply going my way for the toys okay too there we go ontario medic at 131 establishment command in a three story industrial building we have smoke complaints showing all units code three the condition green fire my command posts are located in comparison with the west front building 131, communicate the utilities and ventilation that we are installing. Seasoned Alliance firefighters must also maintain their skills. This is a practice facility where they start the fires themselves and then practice putting them out by even putting them out.
Practicing arson is a dangerous business. The main thing we can do is keep children from playing with matches. The supplier is our friend, but he is also our enemy. as an adult if you have a fire in your house leave your house you saw how quickly this fire built up and intensified if you are a civilian inside the house we went in wearing protective clothing protective breathing apparatus you can see the temperatures i have melted the shield on my helmet so that's the kind of temperature without this protective clothing you would die almost immediately leave the house see a neighbor call the fire department from a neighbor's house call 911 most areas go up to the location of the fire do not hang up the phone until told to do so by a dispatcher, give us the description, type of call, type of fire you have, and if you can, upon our arrival, let us know if everyone is out of the house. where all the family members can gather say at the end of a driveway on the sidewalk some of that effect which helps then we know the father and mother are there saying i have all my children outside we know it's just a fire in the non-life threatening structure our firefighters don't have to take undue risk we don't want to hurt the firefighters and you don't want to lose a civilian oh hi there that's not a bit embarrassing this firefighting thing really didn't work out the way fireman David planned even though he was just pretending but they put me to work and told me if I do really well at this I can polish the truck tomorrow remember kids fire is serious business no Play with fire, I can't judge the construction foreman days.
I'm a Firefighter Days I'd Say I'm a Trucker Day I'm a Trucker Back I'm an Engineer Dave I'm a Helper days and I'm a Helper Becky join us as we explore all kinds of fun things and get into all kinds of trouble live action video for kids get into the action and collect all the period there goes a plane will fly all kinds of planes it's one of the biggest planes in the world Oh if a fire truck comes out we'll see what it takes to be a real firefighter firefighters have to be specially equipped and the clothes they wore too to be safe when fighting fires there is nothing like it in the whole world so jump into action once in a while a bulldozer will actually drive some of the biggest regimes in the world like the jaw of a big shark, but it bites into the rock and then crushes them into smaller pieces so they can be recycled.
She told me not to try one of these. Should not. not the last one there goes a truck we'll learn all about big trucks fuel gets into the engine it explodes and drives the pistons up and down bang bang bang bang bang bang wait a minute i'm supposed to wait and tell me if there's a train everyone is on board for fun as they can see these locomotives are really big oh and there you go the police guards will learn all about police work and the clean gear they wear. the go fly live action video is big it's exciting and so much fun guys if you like the action you just saw you'll want to collect the entire live action video series coming soon there goes a spaceship there goes a racing car goes a boat and much more
