“The United States of America vs. Susan B. Anthony” performed by Maggie GyllenhaalFeb 18, 2020
as a prisoner something to say why sentence will not be pronounced yes Your Honor I have many things to say because in your ordered guilty verdict you have trampled on all the vital principles of our government my natural rights my civil rights my political rights my judicial rights all are equally ignored stripped of the fundamental privilege of citizenship I am demoted from citizen to subject status and not only I individually but all my sexes are doomed by your honorable verdict to political subjugation under this so-called republican form of government the court cannot hear an argument essay that the prisoners' lawyer has already consumed three hours on the presenter, please, your honor. your denial of my citizen's right to vote is the denial of my right to consent as one of the governed the denial of my right of representation is one of the taxed the denial of my right to a trial by a jury of my peers as a lawbreaker therefore denial of my sacred right to life, liberty, property, and the court may not allow the prisoner to proceed, but your honor will. do not deny me this one poor privilege of protesting against this high-handed outrage against the rights of my citizens the court must insist that the prisoner has been tried in accordance with the established forms of law yes, your honor, but by forms of law all made by men
performedby men administered by men in favor of men and against women and therefore your lordships ordered a guilty verdict against a citizen of the United States for the exercise of the citizen's right to vote simply because that citizen it was a woman and not a man but yesterday the same man formulated forms of law declared that it was a crime punishable by a fine of one thousand dollars and six months in prison to give a cup of cold water, a crust of bread or a night shelter to a panting fugitive making his way to Canada and every man or woman into whose veins a drop of human sympathy coerced violated that perverse law without consequence and was justified in doing so, since then the slaves who got their freedom had to take it over or under or through the unjust forms of the law just so now must women take it to have a right to a voice in this government and I have taken mine and i plan to take it at every opportunity the court must insist the judgment of the court is that i pay a fine of $100 in the cost of the prosecution, if it pleases your honor, i will never pay a dollar of your unjust fine.
All the stock in commerce that I own is a debt of $10,000 in pen-cured cord with the publication of my newspaper La RevoluciĂłn, whose sole object was to educate all women to do precisely what I have done, rebel against their ways. unconstitutional and unjust laws made by men who fine, imprison and hang women while denying them the right to representation in government and I will work with all my might to pay my every dollar of that honest debt, but not one penny, will will dedicate to this unjust claim and I will continue to earnestly and persistently urge all women in practical recognition of the old revolutionary maxim, resistance to tyranny is obedience to you.
