, so about a year and a half ago I was getting really frustrated with my phone because I kept getting a lot of notifications and distractions and I felt like I wasn't being as productive as I could be, so I went out and did a ton of research online to see how to make it my phone worked for me and not against me and I found a lot of really useful advice that I've been using since then and it just hasn't been the same.

I have been much more productive during this year and a half than I am now. Lifelong habits that I'm going to use for any future iPhone I have and I want to share them with you in this video today. Reason number two is that there is a penalty for switching tasks. If you don't know what it is, it's essentially where you can work on one task and just jump to something else, like quickly replying to someone on Facebook. You've actually broken that chain of work that you were doing and it can, in fact, it can take you up to 20 minutes to get back to where you were in terms of concentration. Basically, we're trying to put as many steps as possible between us. and these distracting apps now, these apps are still very visible when you are within a group, what I recommend you do is move them all to the second page of the group to hide them even more from your home page. Step number three is to do the same thing again, but this time with all your messaging apps, move all your messaging apps, such as email, imessage, whatsapp and facebook messenger, to a folder on your second screen. I wanted that dopamine here of having a new message from a friend and just replying to it right away. I try to limit that. now as I get through batch processing, an additional tip with this as well is that probably like I did, it gets very frustrating having to go to the second page and go through all of these. folders um you know all these apps grouped together trying to find the app you're looking for can actually become a waste of time so what you'll find like I did is you'll just pull down the home page. screen and search directly for the specific application you are thinking about and want to use.
This is a good thing because it means you're much more intentional about what apps you're looking for on your phone and it also means you're saving a lot of time because simply searching for it is much faster. I do this very often when I'm on my Mac. Just searching for that specific app is much faster than searching through a few menus trying to find it. the app you want to open, step number four is to disable all app review requests. This is a minor request and may be a bit over the top for some of you, but there's nothing worse than having an interesting class. that you're trying to write in notes and you open an app and suddenly you have this thing in your way distracting you trying to get you to go to the app store to write a review and leave a five star rating we just want to eliminate that completely, you can do it by going into Apple ID settings, then iTunes and the app stores and disabling review requests.

So you can see where your time is going, this is actually very useful and hopefully you know that your social media and your entertainment categories should be the lowest or you know that they are very low. You know this is great because now you can track this and see over time. Is increasing? It is decreasing? Naturally, you should notice that a week, two weeks after you've implemented all of these steps in this video, when you go back and look at your screen time, you should see a sharp drop. at which point you will become more productive and all these distracting apps will no longer bother you.
My full-time role is digital marketing specialist, so it's a little bit harder for me to follow this because I'll be posting on, you know, the company's Instagram or IGTV profile, I'll be on Twitter, you know, all of these Different things increase the numbers on my phone annoyingly, so it's a little harder for me to track them, but I like having them there. and if you're someone who doesn't have a job that allows you to go and do those things during the time, you know you can be an accountant or maybe a doctor, for example, you're not going to use social media or entertainment apps.
So this is a very, very useful step for you to be able to keep track of what it is that you're doing, where you're spending your time, and where you might need to be a little bit more conscious about where you're spending your time. Do this, swipe right from your home screen to the today screen and at the bottom of this screen select edit. This will bring up a bunch of apps that you can have as widgets and you'll want to tap the green plus button. for Screen Time to enable the widget and then tap and hold the three horizontal lines to reorder the widget near the top.
I would say this is probably one of the most important steps in this entire video and you might be wondering why I'm just tracing. I'm actually not doing anything right, I would say you're a little bit wrong if that's what you're saying and that's because I think it's very important to see if you're being productive because sometimes we can feel like we've spent time working and we can feel like we haven't spent as much time on social media but it's actually the opposite and we've wasted some time procrastinating, we haven't actually worked as much as we thought we had this right here, this part of the app will just be able to track it and it'll be there in black and white.
In fact, it's data you can't argue with, you know it's tracked everything you've done. Therefore, it will let you know if you are winning this battle or not and if you are actually becoming more productive, so definitely don't skip this step. Step number nine is to organize your apps and folders alphabetically. There are generally a few ways you can organize your application. Some people just do it randomly. Some people do it alphabetically. Some people do it by color, which I think is a little strange. And others also do it by gender. We're going to organize this alphabetically because we know where the letter is in the alphabet and that will allow us to find very quickly on our screen where the app is.
What we are going to do is organize each of the screens of our phone in a unique way. purpose, the first screen I like to leave completely blank, the second is the tools, only the third screen is the apps that are organized in folders according to their function and on the fourth screen there are random useless apps that you can't delete, so, again, why should you do this? well, in the book think fast and slow by daniel kaneman, i don't really know how to pronounce his middle name, he presents the model for the brain as having two systems, the fast system is a default mindset that we normally have and this is kind of from where we are effortlessly is functional to keep us alive but it also acts on impulses and that is what we are trying to limit with this new system that we are implementing in this guide on our iPhone, then we have the second system which is the part The slow part of our brain is much more rational and analytical than the fast parts of our brain;
However, to access it requires effort and intention by creating a system where our apps are listed alphabetically, it forces us to stay in the slow part where we are being much more rational with our brain and we are much more intentional when we unlock our phone to search for the applications we want to use. You know, this just allows us to stay in that part and not get distracted and fall into the fast system that our brain has where we're going to be much more instinctive and give in to these types of impulses. Now this is the second part of this system and that is to use these apps and settings for deep learning, so step number 10 is organize your home screen for deep learning instead of shallow learning now that we have placed all our social networks and gaming and entertainment applications in folders, now we want to create a replacement habit because normally most people will find themselves waiting for the train or standing in line. and they quickly just pick up their phone, unlock it, and instantly get into the habit of clicking on one of those social media apps.
What we're doing now is we've broken that by taking those apps and removing them from that first screen. and put them in a folder, but what we now want to do is create a new habit that will allow you to have deep learning. What I recommend you do is move all the apps that make you smarter. deep learning, like the kindle medium podcast marketplace, watch whatever is for you on your home page, these apps will now be easy to access and will replace addictive apps that would waste your time. Step number 11 is to install castro, which is podcasting. application that I particularly use or instead use another podcasting application that you prefer, your podcasting application should be on your home page and it should be something that you should start making a habit every time you exercise or go for a walk or you're cooking or you know you're traveling somewhere anytime you have this down time where you can actually do something else and listen, that's what we want to happen and this is a really good habit that's natural. they will make you smarter here are some podcast shows that I recommend subscribing to as I think they will make you a little smarter, they have to do with productivity, mindset, business entrepreneurship, all these types of things that I believe that really contributes to a person's character, which is why number one is the Tim Ferris show.

Podcast number two is not overthinking and this is one of my favorite podcasts from Ali and Tamar Abdul and they talk about happiness, creativity and the human condition. Listen and eventually you will understand because Gary is a very complex person. You do not know. It's not like a television show. Just go ahead and watch whatever recent episodes there are and choose which one. stands out to you and something you think you could really learn something from step number 12 is installing the Kindle app. I never used to read many books and if I did, it would take me a long time to read them. All that changed. When I bought the Amazon Kindle and you know, last year I read so many more books at such a fast pace simply because of this purchase. You know, I made a whole video on how to read more books.
It also links to that in the description if you want to read it, but I really recommend getting a Kindle. Sometimes I don't have my Kindle with me. However, if I'm on a train, for example, instead of just wasting time browsing. Instead I'll replace Twitter with deep learning using the Kindle app on my phone and continuing to read all my books there, where I can highlight and take notes. Take a moment to think about how much smarter you would be if you replaced mindless scrolling through Twitter and Instagram with this Kindle app and reading, I think you will find that you will become much smarter and that will spill over into all areas of your life and You will naturally become much more. happier and simply smarter, part number three of this guide, we are completing it now that we are near the end, I promise, and that is to install these apps for productivity, so step number 13 is to install a note-taking app and add it to the dock part of your home screen now I use notion for almost everything in my life, for all the organizations in my life and for taking notes, I put it in notion and it's quick and easy to have it there in the bottom left corner.
I have an idea or need to write something. The reason I have this in the Dock is simply so I'm one step away from getting to that app and it's not buried in a folder somewhere. Step number four is to install a Pomodoro app. The idea behind the pomodoro technique, if you haven't heard of it before, is basically to stay focused for a selected period of time, which is usually about 25 minutes, sometimes 35 minutes, and then you'll have a five-minute break, now there are a couple of apps that exist and I recommend that you install flora, this is one that I use and it is essentially where you will grow a tree or a plant during that 25 minute period and if you pick up your phone or touch it or go or leave from the app or something on your phone, you essentially kill that plant and you can't actually grow this huge forest in the app, so there's a little incentive to not touch your phone and instead continue to focus on your work until the 25 minute timer ends, step number 15 is to install the zero application.
Personally, I work best when I'm in a state of flow and focus on my work for hours at a time and usually get there. By doing two things, the first is drinking titanium tea, which is something I found with Tim Ferriss. In fact, I have an entire video dedicated to how to make titanium gear reap its benefits. Also be sure to leave it linked in the description below and then the The second thing is that I will be fasting while drinking this tea. I normally fast for about 16 hours, sometimes we go even beyond that and just by fasting and drinking this drink I get into the flow state and I am super productive and I can focus for hours at a time withoutgetting up from my desk, without checking social media or anything like that.
I'm just dedicated, I'm in the zone, and I'm being very, very productive to help me stay in control when it comes to the fasting that I use. the zero app and was founded by kevin rose who happens to be friends with tim ferriss and essentially what i do is click on this timer around 8pm. when I finish the last bite I had to eat and I won't. Eat again until the app tells me I've fasted for 16 hours, so this is also another app where I recommend you keep notifications on because you want to not be fasting and you want to know when you've reached 16 hours. and you can break that fast again.
This is just one of the best apps you can download to help you get started with fasting until it becomes a habit because it allows you to avoid eating foods that make you feel lethargic and tired. that general afternoon slump where you're not going to feel as productive, fourth part of this guide and this is the last part, um, just a couple of extra tips that I wanted to include, so step number 16 is to schedule the night shift starting at three. hours before you normally go to bed, the night shift changes the colors of your screen from the blue spectrum to the warmer, red spectrum, which helps relieve our eyesight and does not cause difficult focusing at night, which supposedly leads to deeper sleep, studies have shown. that using a phone before bed prolongs the time needed to fall asleep delays the circadian clock suppresses levels of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin reduces the amount and delays the timing of remote sleep and reduces alertness the next morning .
The final step, which is step 17 and is one of my favorites, is to use the text replacement shortcuts. There are certain words, phrases and pieces of information that we use every day or very frequently during the week. That actually takes some time to type every time someone requires it or an application requires it, like our email address for example, using text replacement shortcuts is a very quick way to fix this. We can do this by going to our general settings and then Go to keyboard and text replacement here, you can go ahead and insert things like your full home address and then create a shortcut called ad and then we'll add another one for our email address and we'll have this .
As a shortcut, I also have another shortcut set up for hashtags that I use frequently on my Instagram, this saves me time because I no longer need to copy and paste them from my notes app every time I want to post a photo on my Instagram. By having the ability to type two letters, I can now click the predictive text button in the middle and it will instantly post my email address so I don't have to type it every time someone or an app requires it. just one of those things that saves a couple of seconds that add up over time.
