Well we learn how to make a fire, how to make a fence, don't splash my pants, it's so much fun because our parents come out like other parents are real. my strict mom gemma works from home as a mobile hairdresser yeah yeah what you wanna do decisions about their own hair, yeah, for one, I don't think some parents understand themselves why they don't let
kids
cut their hair because it's kind of ingrained in you that you own your kids, um, but really and we shouldn't say like that it's not about owning your kids that means it's working as my fundamental purpose in life is toraise
happy healthy kids i make calculated risky decisions so if something might seem dangerous to someone else, I could watch and it goes well, maybe it has a risk attached to it, but the benefits are that they learn responsibility and they know I trust them, they learn skills instead of just filling their heads with knowledge that they have to remember and write down. a piece of paper that you are giving them as motor skills that will start to stay with them for the rest of their lives mom what do you think let's take a look oh my gosh I think I've made it that's amazing you are Like a pro, okay, would you let your kids cut their hair?Probably not I don't know I'm just worried she'll cut herself that's all the vast majority of British children go to school but in the last two years there has been a 65% increase in parents dropping out her children from the system it seems more families are rejecting the traditional way of raising children and adopting rule-free homes in salisbury lives mum jenna and her three children none of them go to school yet not too hot just in case it gets a little bit of a splash oh you're going to try it because you must have seen me do that oh you can't eat rice I'm cooked it's not ready yes with her husband working away jenna makes all the parenting decisions what are the days like at your house it doesn't really structure ure our days we have we have things in the week that are the same like archie's basketball his drum lesson i think certain things like mealtimes and bedtimes give them security they know what What is what but other things I don't know I don't think it's important when you have your own family, do you think you'll do it the same way your mom and dad would like to be like mom? every day and you make sure they feel love and security I think that's it I think that's it and I think there are many other things that different families find important but ultimately for children to be loved and feel safe and they are keeping them safe, I don't think there is, oh, and they are keeping them safe, oh, dad would be very upset if he saw the amount of water that falls on the floor and he says don't put water on the floor, well, no, because he's not even two years old.
He's just playing though, he doesn't realize he's, he doesn't realize he's sweet, he hasn't been naughty, he's just been experimental, well he'd know he'd done something wrong and he'd be dead mad at me and that will have a negative effect. I think be careful because I hurt myself. From there, before Jenna wants her children to have as much freedom as possible, so she brought them a caravan to play stored in a field in Naples. Do you spend a lot here alone? Yes, I lived there and bought my own food and other things, and also had a job, but then I got fired.
Jenna made the decision to take Archie out of school six years ago when she found out. a drastic change in your son's behavior he was seven years old and very depressed at school he was very anxious going to school every day he was not reaching the goals they wanted him to reach and the way they handled it was just was just horrendous for a kid that age to worry so much I just decided you know you're not going back to school tomorrow and he just said yes first of all I tried to mirror school I was right this is our plan what we are going to do this week and we're going to do all these subjects and I saw that he only had a block with reading and writing, so I decided that what I needed was to find out what his natural interests were, which has been playing the drums and everything else. boost their confidence you say your reading and writing levels are the same as everyone else your age tuesday afternoon in yorkshire and while most of the kids are in the classroom the rawnslids have free reign in the local park.
I just heard all the kids at school, yeah, it's not a little weird. but i think to myself it's a bit like they're pending there and then these guys are free and i think that's the most important thing but it's like every day for them is like being a kid there like i'm a kid today , You know? what i mean is it's about being kids really when the sun goes down it's bedtime for other kids on the streets but for the rawnsliz the gentleman is still young gemma and lewis let the kids make their own minds there's no time No bedtime rules about what you can and can't eat what are you cleaning up tasty ice cream late night snack yeah tiny little marshmallows it's 22 uh 11. 2011 on a tuesday night so the kids are still up awesome i got work to do um see that it's going to be all night you like that they have the feeling of freedom yes yes it should be you know that as an adult you can choose when you want and tweet you know that if you are hungry you go for something so why can't they this new style of parenting It has given the children a rare freedom, but one member of the Mily family is beginning to yearn for a more structured lifestyle.
I'm just putting away the clothes she got wet yesterday because we're going to have a water fight. The clothes are very organized. Well there's my clothes, which is this and then all my pants are down here. Now there are those from Phoenix. here it is just in my nature for things to be orderly finley made a big decision who wants to go to school yes i think i would like to go to school i think i will really enjoy it i would like to go because of all the friends there and the job of school i enjoyed doing school work too i like sophie mommy said it wouldn't be that company do you think rules are important yes i think rules are important like if there were no rules there wouldn't be a government it's part of a growing number of parents who are raising their children without rules chef lewis and hairdresser gemma juggled childcare today gemma has a full day of work, so she will leave lewis alone with the seven children, but a change is coming to rawnsley e finley house is going to school in a few weeks dad lewis is struggling with the idea so i think we probably have a very close and intimate relationship with the kids because we are u na family unit so big you know this is our tribe this is our family and you know this is how it should be this is how i feel anyway i don't feel like we should send two of them or three or four five six to school every day for someone else to teach them how to live their life and be
raised
in a world you know and there are our children and you know we have to raise them so i am very strongly sorry despite lewis concerns the parents agreed to a test three days before the children are engaged. to a new regimen get ready finley is looking forward to the change school can bring i like the way you get up early and do all your stuff and go to class at a set time and wake up at a set time because i am the type of person who likes to work properly and do s school work so i feel like i am wasting my day if i wake up enlightened and when i do school work i feel proud of myself afterwards because i feel like i have accomplished something since the announcement of finley her older sister skye also decided that she as a place in the school test hey as the only two girls Pearl and Skye have always been close and Pearl doesn't really like the idea why you are taking that test and how you feel about that you know what it's like to go to school but I'm actually going to go to school you don't want to go to school but you're gonna try yeah I might go and love it and I might go and hit it I might , I'm excited, I'm also scared. as well as, oh, all my nerves kicked in at first when I found out that I was really upset when I found out that she was going to school and she was crying because, in Lewis's opinion, I don't want my sister to go home and raise her children. . at home has always been the best option things like this like kids are forced to build these boxes kids go to lp i do jobs not as soon as vacuuming washing and stuff but actually pearl buildings helped me to build the playhouse it was similar to europe no my upbringing was boring it was nothing that stood out with my childhood where i go oh wow that was awesome and unique it was just yes standard 905 kind of thing go to school come home drink your tea do your own work play a little go to bed that was in bed at a certain time or set a certain time so just rebelled against all that the teenage years are a test in time for most families, but for jenna, who is trying to raise her children without rules, there is no plan and it is a step into the unknown if we have a civil war any time soon i am going to feel quite protected, it has very good aim, huh?Where would you draw the line? Would you let him play with weapons? go there's a gun go and play it would be like oh let's see how this works and I wouldn't let him show up in town with his gun thirteen year old Archie is given free rein to do whatever he wants whenever he wants but his the lack of formal education has caused problems within the family what's his name grandpa mick disagrees with his daughter's approach and has insisted on paying archie to have a private tutor it was his idea i think he likes it because You know that I am getting proper lessons.
What are you worried about? I'm not learning enough. Are you worried that you can't learn cool stuff like this? Oh damn, I didn't do the owl before you did. i know a l yeah it was a club but i forgot to put the air on i went straight to you i'm a traditional dad oh i'm just a traditional man i'm 66 and i grew up where i went to school and i have a sunday roast every Sundays with a pudding that has custard on it because I'm a traditionalist so my tradition is that the kids go to school now when jenna told us that wasn't going to happen with archie we had a big fight yeah oh yeah we feel alright big she knows we don't agree with that but jenna has her head set on summer and that's it i mean she just loves her kids but she's not very good with discipline in yorkshire it's time to Normal game for the youngest of Rawnsley's seven children, hello, but the eldest, Finley and Skye, have other things on their minds in two weeks.
I will go to school for the three-day test. Should I bring you a school uniform if the kids enjoy the experience? Gemma has agreed that they can attend full time in September. you actually like it smarter yeah so i think school blazers will be even more restrictive than your regular blazer it's like staying in line keeping compliant you can't take your blazer i know unless you know to ask permission that's all i'm very hot i can take off my blazer i used to have to ask permission to go to the bathroom in theschool what do you think is a little big? look in the mirror if you want there's a minion changing it's a little big maybe we should try a smaller one come try a smaller one so i kind of keep swinging between doing i want you to go to the door i want you to go to the door?
I can see the pros and cons of both, but then I keep reminding myself that it's not really my choice and that's pretty scary because what if I did decide in the end? I don't want them to go and you go that's all they're gone so it's a bit it's just that I feel so excited to let them go it's natural I actually quite like the foot now it's pretty fun I can try everything on yeah so this already you're changing it so i can only look at finley are you there? I'm looking at finley now and i'll be proud to see him leave for school in the morning but then i swear otherwise and say you can't do that at home younger siblings phoenix and pearl are questioning the local school kids there are a lot of rules in their house, they're standing at the table and they don't have pens on top and if they spill their drink on the table, then they have to clean it up, yeah, and then they have to drink it in the kitchen, so what? time to go to bed then it just means it's ok today after emmerdale and i have to go to coronation street and we it's good maybe make friends with them no why don't they look weird they definitely have a lot more rules than our family Why do you think some parents have so many rules because they are worried they will get hurt and then most of the time most parents the reason they send them to school is just because they don't bother to take care of them but with our family is that we can choose if we want to go to school or not, so it's different, how do you think his life is next? kind of weird, they're quite different in the way school is because I go to school at home and we go to school in a real school and what would you do if you didn't go to school?
Just watch TV. They won't learn anything. In the past, the idea of taking children out of school and structure was seen as an alternative, but now, in search of a better life, more conventional families are giving it up. go to mom vicky and dad mike's house yeah just be nice because you eat it so bad it might break yeah be a little break they have three kids and recently decided to try and remove the rules from their home ok ? Okay, high five, do you have a gentler way to get them to do it? Yeah because obviously that could have been like stopping that now let me understand now that he locked himself out earlier this year they took seven year old jessica out of school she was so sad and so upset every single day she was at the point where jessica where just i thought you knew what i don't care if she never learns to read as long as she's happy i won't play you came across a lot of um opinions when you decided to make these decisions yeah a lot of people said what are you doing you can't do that and if you can do it is that even legal, um, can you just take your kids out of school, um? and almost everyone we told was a bit taken aback really that you literally just write a letter and then education is your responsibility in the uk there is no law that requires us to send our children to school once they are You drop a child who doesn't have to follow the national curriculum or take exams as long as you give them a proper education, so what you choose to teach your child is largely up to you who taught them. quitting, jessica vicki doesn't have many people around her who share her interest in no-rules parenthood so she relies on help from online communities initially i was like oh my gosh they're all crazy about what they're doing and one of the great things they do is let kids have their hair however they want and there were like little girls with shaved heads and stuff like that socially it's like everyone is like oh no but they look so happy and you could see in their faces how happy they were, but I think one of the biggest breaking points for us was that while we were treating Delilah, we had four miscarriages and that makes you not appreciate the children you have, but rather appreciate the time you have more.
I just said that my wonderful life is too short. We cannot go around doing the daily routine from nine to five. for nothing, no one is happy and it was around three in the morning. I woke up and wrote the d-ridge mix and went in the next day and was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I actually wrote. this and i was sitting there and i was like i take it or do i post it and i didn't i didn't have the guts to accept it myself so we put it through the mailbox and then me and jessica ran out of the mailbox really fast and it was like that's it it's done and we came home and we sat on the surface and did nothing for the rest of the day and it was great vicki wants to give kids free rein to learn at their own pace and make their own decisions ex-soldier mike is less comfortable with the idea um i think it still has to be a level of structure ok it's a good thing there always has to be a level of structure it's going to be ok it's wrong to do that oh No, don't hit your sister over the head with that. bat that's going I think it's guiding quite a bit more than yeah well a child still needs to understand that you are the parent and they have a child and you when you say something it's for a reason there's still a limit he can't just free run destroy everything spiral kids we are kids here we are its an unus normal early start for finley and sky in yorkshire they are starting their three day school test today finlay good morning how are you?
Are you going to take a shower? morning to me good morning we usually don't manage time just a little bit usually get off and start doing things at seven we will leave in an hour if all goes well they will be attending full time in september please hand over these stones thanks ok i'll come because of my chair and my hair sky you look terrified like i think i'd be excited but i'm pretty scared nervous i'm dressed in my school clothes you look so smart how you feel huh a little excited a little scared but i think i'll be fine oh , it just didn't seem real to me before, but now I realized that they might actually leave.
I am losing them. oh honey, you spend a lot of time together, don't you? you know jim its not like 25 to see when i have 10 minutes ok so i need to speed up a bit hey i t work thanks i smile oh thats lovely have fun guys awesome well its like taking home displacement in finals i am concerned that they will become standard human beings who lose the good ethics and morals i have put on them and they get into bad habits and bad ideas choosing to smoke or you know watch porn on phones people's phones or you know I'm worried they'll lead me the wrong way I don't want them to come down but on the day that I still have to go out and make their own decisions so yeah I feel a little worried about that for decades the Parenting gurus have told us that limits are vitally important, but now a new wave of parents is turning their back on discipline and prioritizing freedom. we're here rookies vicky and mike have been in noble's foster for almost a year now they're visiting their friends joanne and john for a barbecue hello the men have known each other since their time in the military now they work shifts together delivering furniture ture john is struggling to understand the idea of parenthood with no rules until 10 o'clock just let them do what they want, yeah, though if you can't do what you want and yes, how does that work?
Do they learn limits? Yeah, when they go to a workplace in a social situation, I would be completely out of my comfort zone if I had that and it would actually make me sick I think and John would be the same if a situation arises and he needs some kind of of discipline let's handle that's my classmate don't ask you why you don't do this it terrifies you I think it's just having that flexibility I think I would worry like I'm doing what are you doing I worry you know I'm teaching the right things I'm getting losing social media but the social side she has the best social life of her life she goes out more than me you know she is in different clubs all the time we have rock climbing horse riding ice skating and it's all women do sh I befriend oh yeah I'd say she has better friends now than when she was in school because she gets to choose who she wants to be friends with in Salisbury the big concerned administrator has set her up weekly English lessons for 13 years. the old archie who hasn't been to school in six years, so let's think about this word, right?
Have you ever worried that the decisions Jenna makes about parenting and education will hold Archie back? 16 and if you couldn't read write and do arithmetic that would hold you back rough rough rough cold light full rich drunk so let's take the loud sound well done but it's certainly a lot further along than it was good I mean Reading that combination of words he really struggled early on yeah so now we're really happy with the way he's getting on it's a big weight to get off his head yeah yeah no one. as well as h She should but this time next year she should have gotten to where she would be that's all we're asking really you know Jenna is going on with her life teaching and maybe we can get her to learn some other things too certainly not her life we would. you know i wanted her to lead but you know she loves it it's lunchtime on skye and finley's first day of school they have been allowed to film so they can share their experience with the family so this is after computer science and i just walked into the changing rooms at a toasting place so this is my story room and there's uh the rest of the kids are back home with gemma she made your fingers work yeah always keep your fingers out of the night walk even though the kids never go to school she has taught them all to read and write we too come back boil and cook yes or four nine to eleven yes minutes yes she enjoys the freedom this style of life it's incredibly liberating for them to live like this and it's been a real shock just for the sisters going to school now we're living two lives so we're all like in all this is still happening as usual in between we have the ci elo and yes but this kind of life where it's loud and fun this is what i love it's the school hall this is where we have dinner i just do boring things like assembling it's a pink little sister pearl is worried about what school might mean for the family heaven is very unique but i'm worried that she's going to change like she could change into something into someone different like not her in salisbury jenna and the kids are visiting great to admit hello hello hello buddy no kissing today from okay guys for the last few months mick has been paying archie to have weekly english lessons right?
I tell you, he was talking to his teacher. I forgot her name though and she said he's, um, she's been coming since she started taking lessons, yeah, she's been coming in leaps and bounds. We'll see, but I'm a little worried. I told dad because we are leaving and I don't know how often she will be able to go, sure, yes, the sessions may have to be called off since Jenna wants the family to travel to Europe. You say you know yourself. if you're going you're going to travel yes when you're going and where you're going we've decided we've made a little plan we're going to tour the UK go to Scotland and Wales Go check out lots of sights and then we can drive all over Europe , but Mick worries that this extra step will affect more than just his education. get into tony or something it's not necessarily all teenagers i'm concerned that archie is 13 and he has he doesn't have 13 friends if he went to school and mixed with other kids my that's one of my biggest things about this all this It's the fact that I don't really get to meet other people, you're basing it on your experience and you don't listen to your experience and your personality and I was the same and dylan was the same but he's not going to have to agree to disagree no no we just won't agree and that's it and all about it we just won't agree but it's okay but we're okay because we're used to it we just believe differently it's like and that ok all i wanted was for my kids to be happy and she is so thats good enough ok finley and skye are back from their first day at school everyone is so dim and tired look who is they look at the back they've been to school look there are aliens in the house they smell different it was so um different you miss your brother honestly no that doesn't really bother me because i was only in six hours anyway i could really expect them to miss me if someone messed with you no so are you going to follow in finn's footsteps and go to school i would say no i'm not going he'd be doing a lot of things he hates that we don't do as many things he likes to be a little lazy sometimes it's true how it is is different thanhome a lot more lessons a lot more school work it's not as relaxed as at home you have to wear a restricted uniform it's nice I enjoyed it um how would I say 60 chance of me going to school I'm 40 I'm staying so it's going to be interesting I'm going to to go or not in hull mike is out working and vicki is home alone with the kids it's been almost a year since he started experimenting with parenting without rules and today vicky has agreed to leave seven years old jessica dyed her hair at school when you're at school you can't have purple hair and i went to school as a teenager i had multi colored hair and i think it kinda broke my mom's heart a little bit it ruined my hair the decision Vicky's taking Jessica out of school was motivated by wanting to give her more opportunities in life not many people leave home people can't stay and there are jobs people work but they are very limited there are many factories here many or offices and people usually say okay if you don't don't go to school how are you going to know how to work in an office and think I don't want you to work in an office every day working for someone else to start your own business or do something that thrill them to be interested i want them to see things and see beyond the humber bridge travel the m62 and see what is out there instead of staying here for the rest of their lives how would you describe your family now compared to a happy year ago just kind of literally happy everyone has calmed down all the stress is gone we don't worry about going to school we don't worry about packing the pee kits homework trying to get jessica to read books she didn't want to read because she didn't like to read it's all just gone and we enjoyed life n it's easier now do you like what do you think daddy will say when he gets back from work mike came home after four days on the road working hello oh yeah juice no no what hi you did when we dyed it she died yes and whose idea was it us it was your idea i think it wasn't that yeah yeah it was like the pants caught fire for mike.
Life has changed drastically in the last year, although he was reluctant at first. I want your kids to be happy no matter what they do if they choose to work at the supermarket or if they decide to go to college what's going on what does it matter what's the worst that could happen you know I thought they were going to be happier we have more days off and more fun you know no no no how you feel about it vicky is like one less thing to worry about as such who likes to fully commit to freedom i think he stopped murdering me now yes its six weeks since he was 12 finley and d skye 13 year old had her school test today they are celebrating wolf peek-a-boo's first birthday skye has decided that school is not for her finley has also made a decision about her future i definitely think school is not the right thing for me I enjoyed making friends and socializing with people and I liked some of the learning, but the summer learning felt like the downside was that some of the learning didn't make sense, it added structure, but it was It was repetitive and I had to do it every day and sometimes you need a brick but you just can't take a break I like the structure but it's a very restricted structure you can't really do what you want I enjoy being in places like this on beautiful days like this this it's what i enjoy because i would be in school today for gemma the experience has confirmed her belief in her parenting you have to do the right thing for yourself and your family but my point in all this is i don't think many people you are doing the right thing. right for them or their family they're just doing what their parents did or what their friends are doing and it's like that, what I would encourage people to do is just be okay, what do we really want for our family?
How do you feel about kids not going to school? I think it's the best thing I've had in school for me. It's like that limitation. I like being there together and we can take care of them. So what do you want to be when you grow up? I just want to be happy and free, really, yes I want to live a happy life with my own family, oh my own family too.
