The New Stratos — Jason Cammisa on the IconsFeb 27, 2020
This is the new Straw Toes, it's not Atlanta, but it looks like it's a modern reinterpretation of what one of the best rally cars in the world would look like if it were built like the original today. This omage car is goofy, weird, and absolutely gorgeous. fall in love with whatever mass produced grotesque supercar you think you love this is the car you'd have on your wall if wall posters still existed the original release United made its debut in 1971 when everything on the road was big square and round if the strats they look obscene now imagine what it looked like back then the straw toast was designed by March hello Gandini and he was either completely crazy or a genius but either way he had the best drugs of anyone in the business Gandy's knee creations are among the most beautiful and outrageous machines of all time made the lamborghini miura the bugatti eveyone 10 the chizetti Moroder and the mother of all billboard cars the Countach but styling is only half the story what c What you mentioned the Stratus as one icon is that he slid ass-first straight into the World Rally Championship and kicked the chocolate out of everything that got in his way.
He won his first rally and his second and he didn't stop winning. The Stratos took the 1974 manufacturers championship and the 75 and 76 scored more than double the points of its next closest competitor, the reason why the Stratus was the first car designed as a rally car from the start. , everything else was just a converted road car and new strats on the other hand its not a rally car at all its based on a street car it could have been a very bad thing but its not underneath its a Ferrari, but that's a bit of a double-edged sword.
The fact is that Ferrari tried to kill the new one. straw tous Ferrari don't like the competition and that's why I'm standing here in 2019 when this car was on the cover of a million magazine in 2005 and then again in 2010 but the story of the new straw toes begins even before the history of the new Stratos sta Nearly twenty years ago, a student at the Royal College of the art studying automotive design decides that he wants to make a modern interpretation of the Lancia Stratos and not only finishes this project but then raises enough money to build one and then up against the Geneva Motor Show to give it a slot right in front of Bugatti, the car would have gotten no more attention if it had fallen out of a spaceship and garnered all the proper attention, including from a billionaire German who wanted one for The guy spends the next five years and spends 15 million dollars developing the car together with Pininfarina.
This is not a car kit. It is the best of body construction. They built two full-size clay models of the car. They took it to a wind tunnel and then a Formula One driver adjusted the suspension, so they took the car to Ferrari and gave it to the big boss Luca di Montezemolo and said, "Hey, you want to give him your blessing." take the wheels off the thing just annihilate it absolutely and he loved it he loved it so much he signed the hood of the car he loved it so much he killed it that's right he picks up the phone calls Pininfarina and says if you build this car you will never work on it again this town was a classic kiss of death wah-wah good night bye and at that very moment the book on the new Stratos closed oh but the straw toes are anything but dead it's just a little old under the Stratus there is a ferrari f430 and since the f430 is out of production no one needs ferrari's blessing all you need is a used 4:30 and a big bag of money 8 inches was cut off the wheelbase and everything you see is custom built from the wraparound windshield to the carbon fiber body panels, weighs a hair under 3000 pounds 110 less than the Scuderia, the lightweight version of the 430 and has more horsepower than the Spiria 540 of them so the Stratus is shorter than the Scuderia and that's faster than the cockpit of the scooter and it's definitely cooler too because unlike the Scuderia I think I get hot flashes no jeez I just from flooding my basement there isn't a single car that doesn't get bettered with a stick but there's more to this manual transmission than just a clutch pedal because the Scuderia and almost all four 30's never came with a manual we never got to interact with this engine at all and I had no idea how much we were really missing in this massless engine just accelerate it will go from 2000 to 8000 rpm in a second and back again which means when I shift I have to do it as fast as I can or the revs they will drop too low.
This is an epic epic engine. the only engines I can think of that have enough character to match the look of this part speaking of character there is a place to put your helmet on the door just like the original straw fingers and a lot of people equate character and the flaws, I'm one of them, so let's talk about t The biggest flaw of your car is that it's so hot in this cabin that I had to take off my pants and that will make the next sequence a little awkward because I have to talk about getting in And getting out of this car, as you can see, there really isn't much room. don't get stuck here move here don't stress coal and go a midget romanian contortionist who would really need to warm up before getting in and out of this car gracefully get back in you don't look like doing yoga cut sugar inches of hate out of the middle ago make it hard to live with but that short wheelbase makes strats turn like nothing this side of a gt3 race car is raw it's neat it looks more like a lotus elise than an f430 and that's the biggest compliment you can give a sports car the estrada's would be miserable as an everyday car the f430 was not i have a complaint about the ferrari f430 and this is a bit backwards so bear with me for a second it's too good a car when you hit it it's amazing but when i drive it normally just you could it's just a good car and when i go out for fun and i go out for a drive i don't want to be in a good car i want to be in something that is Crazy, that is the experience all the time, straw toes is then a Ferrari with the fat trimmed.
Here's the deep, dark, dirty secret about mid-engined two-passenger Ferrari v8s. They look amazing. The rest of the experience doesn't really want to match, but the Stratus fixes that because it looks awesome, it's got a great engine, it's got an awesome transmission, and everything else about the experience is stepped up across the board. I love this car okay now we have to talk about the elephant in the room the car is three quarters of a million dollars look every Ferrari is an expensive car and this is a very expensive car I have no problem with the fact costing three quarters of a million dollars I only have a problem with t The fact that I don't have enough money to own one I mean I can't even imagine what it would cost me to get three quarters of a million yeah let's call that worth It's worth it, you can't put a price on a good time and in that sense the new Stratus is priceless, removing the habitability makes the f430 a bad car but at a great time and having a good time we will never go out of style this new Stranos' is timeless - just like its 45-year-old Gandini styling, manual gearbox and Ferrari v8, these are things that will never go out of date.
I'm sure I'll wake up with a horse's head in my bed for saying this. The best Ferrari v8 ever made is ok so it doesn't drive like a kick car and it's not built like a kick car but it's Italian so every time it starts to rain the wipers stop run every time it stops raining the wiper works fine at least for the engine runs so all the time like i can't really see anything oh i fixed it i hit the steering column and t what it wiped i won't do it again to turn off
