Now the official name of this is Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6. It is powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo engine. v8 making 540 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, those sound like good power numbers, but the thing is, this 6x6 is huge, it weighs around 9,000 pounds, which is not an exaggeration, it weighs around 9,000 pounds, so performance isn't really good. All that fantastic 0-60 is around 8 seconds, as a result Braabus has tuned this one for around 700 horsepower which improves acceleration quite a bit, of course that's not the only crazy thing about this

truck

, another is the price. around 600,000 when sold new and Mercedes-Benz only built around 100 or 150 of them for the entire planet, but Mercedes-Benz never officially imported this vehicle into North America, so if you can find one that has been federalized To comply with US regulations like this expect to pay over a

million

dollars and even more with all the Brabus modifications to get more power and performance somehow that seems reasonable for an ultra limited production lifted Mercedes

More Interesting Facts About,

the mercedes g63 amg 6x6 is the ultimate 1 5 million pickup truck...

To start off the quirks and features of the 6x6 with a discussion of its most obvious and notable quirk, and that would be its size, okay this is a Mercedes-Benz GLK, this is a pretty standard sized Mercedes SUV and they have them in everything the world. They're popular here in North America, in Europe, Australia, South Africa, pretty much the entire planet has GLKs and here's how the 6x6 compares to the GLK in terms of size. Now again, this is a normal rationally sized Mercedes-Benz SUV, the 6x6 is far away. More massive, the 6x6 measures 228 inches long, meaning it's more than four feet longer than this GLK.
the mercedes g63 amg 6x6 is the ultimate 1 5 million pickup truck
More incredibly, the six-by-six measures 93 inches tall, making it more than two feet taller than the GLK and this is no small sports car. an suv and the six by six is two feet taller, in other words, if you were to stack two of my four gts on top of each other, there would still be six more inches to go before reaching the roof of the 6x6 at 93 inches high, the 6x6 is simply too big to fit too big to fit where you ask for it and in fact the craziest thing about 6x6 is absolutely its gigantic size, but it can be a little difficult to convey its size unless you're standing right next to it, it's a Bit challenging on video, so I'll give you a few more numbers.
the mercedes g63 amg 6x6 is the ultimate 1 5 million pickup truck
This thing has almost 20 inches of ground clearance for reference, that's more than three times what you get in a Toyota Rav4, it's almost double what you get in a Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Wrangler isn't exactly coupe-style. Low-slung Porsche 911, it's a tremendously capable off-road SUV in its own right and this thing has twice the ground clearance and more than enough room underneath for me to climb in, but it becomes a problem when you have that much ground clearance. and that problem is getting in. You can see that when I stand next to this thing, the footboard reaches above my knee and I'm not exactly sure that I'm six foot four, which means getting in is really tricky.
A little difficult, the strategy I've started employing is to take one foot and get into this position, standing like this near the footboard, grabbing the handle and then hoping for the best as I enter the g and exit. It's also quite a challenge to get up here and well, it's a jump just to get down, but even that doesn't tell the whole story of the gigantic size of this thing, so here's another illustration, let's say you want to get it. In the engine compartment, you pull a little lever in the driver's footwell, reach up here and then you push a little latch and you open the hood quite simply, like basically all cars, and now you can access the engine, except there is a problem.
You see, this thing is so incredibly high off the ground, it's so ridiculously high that I can't reach the hood anymore to close it. I can't actually go up there if I get to the top, I can only grab the latch. part that clips onto the car, I can pull it down a little bit and then I can take it over here and use both hands to close the hood, but if you were even a couple of inches shorter than me, you wouldn't be. In order to close the hood, you would have to stand on a stool after opening the hood on your 6x6.
Well, those are a couple of elements that show how big this thing is. Now I'm going to move on to some. Other interesting quirks and features of the 6x6, starting with the tire air system. If you don't drive off road you may not realize it but most off roaders will deflate their tires a little bit when they are off roading so that when they go over rocks they don't puncture the tires it's pretty simple the problem is if you have a six-wheeled vehicle, it can be very annoying to inflate six different tires. Mercedes-Benz thought about that and there is a system in this vehicle. which will automatically inflate the tires for you, it's mounted here above the mirror and you can see there are two dials on the system, one for the front tires and one for the rear tires, and if you want to deflate the tires, you just press the little arrows towards down and it will deflate them completely to whatever pressure you want from those dials and then you'll be able to get off the road more easily but of course that's only half the battle once you've got off the road or driven in the sand where you have than to deflate your tires, you're thinking right, now I have to find an air pump and inflate the tires again, it's still very annoying, ah, but don't you see?
There are two other sets of arrows in this control area that can re-inflate your tires so that after you leave the road, you simply press a few buttons. Your tires fully re-inflate and can go from zero to completely road-ready in 20 seconds, so after you get off the road, press a couple of buttons and then drive home while everyone else is stuck in the line waiting for air for the tires and also crazy the other dial located in this area above the mirrors here and that would be a fuel gauge, you're thinking, isn't there a fuel gauge in the gauge cluster? the answer is yes of course there are two fuel gauges because there are two fuel tanks and you can activate the second fuel tank by turning this little switch to the right of this control area, when you do that you release another 13 gallons of fuel, what brings your total gallons is 40 which means you don't have to stop as often, although let's be honest you probably still have to stop quite often because I bet this thing gets like 6 miles per gallon and next I want to move on to some. more items that the regular g wagon doesn't have, which is pretty much everything that's behind the rear doors, since you know the regular g wagon doesn't have a pickup bed or six wheels and I want to start with the tailgate now that the hatch rear is a bit interesting in the fact that it doesn't close with the doors right now, the doors are unlocked, I'm going to close them and I can still open the rear door, so it's like an old school truck in that sense .
The newer ones have locking rear doors, and since we're back here, let's talk about the bed. What exactly is in the bed of the six-wheeled G-wagon pickup truck? The first thing you notice is the bamboo. Now on your truck, you might have sheet metal back here. or you could have a bed liner so you can throw things in the back. There is bamboo on the inside of the back door, on the floors and on the sides of the bed. Be sure to take off your shoes before climbing onto the back of the bed. 6x6, you'll also notice that back here is a full size tire and wheel that the standard g-wagon has mounted on the back, but they couldn't do that with the truck because of the tailgate, so they put it in the bed . which I'm sure helps dramatically with its curb weight, but the upshot of this is that each 6x6 actually has seven tires and seven wheels in case you have a small incident and need to replace one while off-roading, now another.
One interesting element you will notice on the 6x6 box is the sides of the box. Typically, the floor of a truck bed extends all the way to the sides to maximize what you can fit, but that's not the case in this case. and that's because if you look under these little seats next to the bed, you'll see that there are air canisters there. I think those are the air canisters to deflate and inflate the rear tires, they had to stick them in there and that meant compromising a bit of bed space but it obviously improves your off road capabilities so it's a small trade off and then my camera isn't as high as I need for this shot, but it's as high as it can go, so I just have to make do next, I want to talk about these bars.
These bars on the back of this truck make it look really cool. I don't know if they really have any rational functional purpose back here. I suppose lights could be mounted on them. but even just sitting here makes it look a lot cooler than if it had some sort of regular truck bed and another interesting element related to the bed on this truck is that the rear window is fixed in place on many modern models. On pickup trucks and even older ones, the rear window opens for ventilation or to access the bed from the cab, but not on the 6x6, it just sits there and then moves on to other interesting things that you can't get. the regular g-wagon, I give them dome lights, now the squared 4x4 g-wagon that was sold here in North America had these dome lights, but Mercedes-Benz had to disconnect them because of some stupid government regulation.
Well, in this they are connected. again and you can see that they are nice and shiny and mounted on the roof, I guess to light up the trees you're about to run over at night or something. I don't know exactly what its purpose is, but I do know that it gives this car a really cool look. Now it's worth noting that on this particular 6x6, the roof lights complement the front lighting on this vehicle a bit more, some of which were added by Brabus during the upgrade and customization phase. You have the ceiling lights with five LEDs. lights in each corner and then under the headlights it has five more LED lights in each corner and then underneath on the front bumper it has five more LED lights on each side for a total of 30 different small LED lights on the front of this vehicle.
I imagine that when you see the size of all those LEDs coming towards you at night, the 6x6 is a pretty imposing and intimidating presence and then another interesting detail related to the lighting is the fact that the turn signals are located down here, more or less on the At the bottom of the front bumper, these are LED running lights until you turn on the turn signals and then the LEDs go out and the signals come on. Now it's worth mentioning because on a regular g-wagon and a regular 6x6 the turn signals are mounted up. Here on the top of the front fender, but Brabus got rid of that, instead they put this cool looking carbon fiber crest and move the turn signals down here.
Now normally having the turn signals at the bottom of the front bumper would be a problem, but this car is so high off the ground that's pretty much where they are on a normal typical family sedan, so it works pretty well and then We move on to some other interesting quirks and features that the 6x6 has that the regular G-wagon has. not like for example four rear wheels and by the way that hummer behind me anyway keep going I want to talk about the wheel arches now when I reviewed the square 4x4 g-wagon I made fun of it for being an off road vehicle that had These wheel arches carbon fiber wheel, so every time you take it off the road, you could damage these wheel arches that probably cost like 10 grandeach.
Well this thing has these amazing carbon fiber rear wheel arches that cover both rear wheels, I think if you offered it. this and damaged one of these huge unique wheel arches made just for this really weird vehicle, it would probably cost like 30 grand each, but still it still has these carbon fiber covers over these huge tires, but it's what's underneath of these giant carbon fiber wheel arches which is really cool, I want to start with the bead lock wheels now, if you don't know what bead lock wheels are, it's a pretty weird off-road wheel, but it basically locks the wheel on the bead of the tire and that way if you deflate the tire pressure completely for off-road driving or driving on sand, which means the tire and wheel will not come off, they will stay together always and you will not have have to worry about trying to refit a tire. trail bead locking wheels are really rare, this thing has them and it's not even close to the best piece of off road hardware on this vehicle, that honor would definitely go to the portal axles.
Portal axles are absolutely crazy on a traditional car. The axle meets the wheel right in the center, of course it does, and that's how the wheel turns, but that doesn't give you much ground clearance and that's where portal axles come in. You can see here that the axle actually meets the wheel near the top of the wheel, not in the middle. They have to use this type of gear system to raise it and that gives this truck more ground clearance better ability to ford water and overcome all kinds of obstacles it's an amazing feature you almost never see portal axles on real vehicles made by manufacturers traditional because it is very complicated and almost no one needs it, the hummer h1 had it, but that is because it was commissioned by the army, but this has it too and it greatly improves its off-road capabilities and then we move on to a couple of other elements quite interesting with the 6x6, starting with this bar back here, now this thing rises so high with its portal axles and all the other off-road components, the normal g-wagon bumper is no longer relevant because if a car hits it, it will go well below that bumper, so to make this safe and meet crash standards around the world Mercedes-Benz equipped it with this additional bumper to give you a little more protection and other drivers more protection in the event of an accident.
Now there is another interesting element that you will notice here under the license plate, there is a camera mounted. This thing has a reversing camera, you put it in reverse, the camera turns on inside, that's actually a big deal because rear visibility is a nightmare, it's so tall and so long you can't really see what's there behind you without that camera. Again, it doesn't really matter, you can skip over it now. One thing you won't find here is the exhaust. Where is it exactly? How does the exhaust come out? The answer is in the middle, if you go below the 6x6, you will see. the exhaust pipe stops somewhere under the rear seats Mercedes-Benz probably thought: forget it, there's no point in running the exhaust all the way back, it's expensive, it could get caught on something if you're in an off-road vehicle, and besides, you'd do it .
I can't hear the engine note under full throttle so the exhaust only goes halfway on the six by six, now next to cover a few more things the 6x6 has that we don't have to move the regular g-wagon to . the interior I want to start with the back seat now, when you open the door to get in the back seat, the first thing you notice is how beautiful it is back here, everything looks wonderful, the leather on the seats is fantastic, there is alcantara absolutely everywhere the headliner the sides of the seats the seat backs are completely covered in alcantara as it turns out this is not the factory interior when brabus tuned this vehicle for more power they did more than just improve its acceleration they also improved substantially the interior and you can really tell that in the back even the floor is leather with nice hand stitching and you can see that the floor mats are the same.
All the surfaces on this vehicle are really nice, really unique thanks to that Brabus update, but on to the rest of the 6x6s anyway. The improvements over a standard g-wagon is the fact that the back of all 6x6s have captain's chairs, there is no rear bench here, like in a normal g wagon, you have two individual seats and then a center console and both seats are wonderfully luxurious. They are heated of course, they are also cooled so you can sit here and enjoy the perfect seat temperature. You also get full seat controls mounted on the center console for the lower backrest and even a power headrest for the rear seats, which is pretty impressive. and there is a group of controls hanging on the side of the seat that allow you to adjust things like seat tension, lumbar support, backrest support throughout the rear seat, something you don't usually find in the back of almost any vehicle , but anyway Moving on to some of the other luxury items here, I have to talk about the center console and I want to start between the two seat backs.
You can see there's a little door here, you open it and there's a refrigerator in this car, which is pretty cool, it's controlled with a little switch under the door. You can put whatever you want in your refrigerator and make sure it stays cold while you drive. In addition, between the two seats you have a small storage compartment that you can open. and there are glasses there where you can pour yourself a good drink while driving in your six by six and in the front you have an armrest finished in alcantara, a good place to rest your arm while driving. on your six by six now, then a couple of other interesting items on the back of the six by six, one is the rear screens that you can see mounted on the back of the front seats, you have screens for each individual seat if you want to watch a DVD while driving in your six by six and another fantastic six by six back seat.
There are child seat anchors back here, so if you want to use your six-by-six as family transportation to the rideshare line, you can do that. But perhaps the most interesting 6x6 element, at least from a vehicle design and build standpoint, is the extra rear window you see. Mercedes-Benz wanted the 6x6 to have more rear legroom than the regular G-wagon. It was huge, so why not? But they used it. the doors of the normal g-wagon and that meant that there was a large empty space behind the doors before you reached the bed. Mercedes placed an extra window in this space, so each 6x6 g-wagon has four rear windows, two on each side.
The rear windows don't roll down, but they provide more light back here and give an airier feel to this cabin and then allow the rear passengers to sit down and not have their head rest against some pillar that they can't. You don't see anything while they're being driven. Next we move to the front of the 6x6, which is actually probably the least interesting thing about the entire vehicle because it's pretty much the same as a regular G-truck, except you taste taller once you get it. Away from this control area for the tires and the additional fuel tank, everything is quite similar.
In fact, one of the things that surprises me about this car is that it's so special and cool and amazing and expensive, and yet up here it looks so similar to my seven-year-old Mercedes truck we have the same gear shift we have many of the same controls and buttons and switches and dials and we even have the same key now I discovered this before when I tried to start the 6x6 using the key for my Mercedes by accident a small warning appears on the screen saying that the key does not belong to the vehicle. I guess Mercedes realizes that some of their owners have a lot of Mercedes and that's why they have to let you know in some way that no, no, you have selected the key for the wrong Mercedes-Benz but of course there are some interesting elements worth worth mentioning here, starting again with the leather, brabus leather and alcantara, and the craftsmanship is just incredible up here, everything is really nice, really luxurious, it just looks like a fantastic place to spend time and that in itself is a kind of an upgrade over a standard g van, makes you feel a little better about spending a million and five on this one and then one of my favorite brabus related things with this vehicle is the fact that when you open the door, There is a small decal on the left of the dash, a part that is normally covered by the door, and that decal gives you instructions on how to turn on the sport exhaust.
They pressed it on an existing button which is the little left controls. the steering wheel if you hold down the top left control on the steering wheel for two seconds the sport exhaust will turn on if you want to go back to normal just hold down the bottom control for two seconds you would never know except there is a little sticker that tells you he says and speaking of little stickers that tell you things when you open the door of the 6x6 you will see a little red sticker in three languages that says before towing, check the suggested procedures in the odor manual.
I can only imagine what these procedures would be like for towing with a 9,000 pound, million and a half dollar Mercedes truck with portal axles. I would love to see some photos or videos of someone doing that, but I still wanted to know what the procedures were, so I consulted the Unfortunately, the owner's manual is completely in German, so I won't be able to know what I should do to prepare my 6x6 to tow it and finally a couple of other interesting elements in this interior is the fact that on top of the sunshades on the roof.
There are little storage pockets in here, so if you want to store things in there and hide them because no one will know it's a storage compartment, you can do that in this vehicle, I'm not exactly sure why there's a storage compartment up there, but there it is and finally our last interior detail because the 6x6 is based on the old g-wagon body style. You don't get any rational cup holder here, instead you get the basketball hoop, that's right, this million and a half six dollars. For six crazy ultra limited special G cars, the only front cup holder is this ridiculous thing that looks like a basketball hoop with a net, you put your drink in there if you want your G car to hold it while you drive, it's absolutely absurd that they did that.
I can't think of a better solution considering how incredibly expensive this is but the basketball hoop lives on and we finally get back under the hood so we can check the engine now as I mentioned this has been tuned by braavos which I'm sure I'll start an argument in the comments about whether it's Brabus or Brabus or Braebus, but regardless of this, when it was new it had 540 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque and that wasn't enough considering how huge and heavy it was. what is it. It's been tuned to about 700 horsepower, which improves acceleration quite a bit;
Otherwise, there's nothing particularly interesting to see here. The engine is absolutely wedged into the engine bay as it was in all of these older G-wagon models before the redesign, but otherwise it's pretty standard. your brabus tuned twin turbo v8 so that's the 6x6 g-wagon. I've shown you all of its cool quirks and features, but if you're like most viewers, you probably still have one more question and that would be why they made it and why would anyone buy it? The answer to why they would do it to me is actually very obvious. For one thing, I didn't realize they already had a six-wheeled pickup truck that they were selling to the Austrian military, so someone at Mercedes.
Benz said, "We're going to lift it up, make it cool, and sell it for six hundred thousand dollars. Why did they think it would sell simply? Because the G has been incredibly popular lately. Buyers just can't get enough. Look at this. The G Wagon has been". on sale continuously for almost 40 years and its best sales years have been the last ones, even the old model, when it was reaching the end, it was only selling more and more, it's what people want at the moment, so Mercedes -Benz thought ok let's make one with six wheel drive and charge 600 grand for it people will pay and they did this they outsold

mercedes

-benz expectations and I can't believe other car makers aren't doing it things similar to this the lamborghini iris is great and anything but in my opinion it should have been an off roader like the original lamborghini suv that may seem crazy but think of all the popular off roaders right now the jeep wrangler is selling the toyota camry, the ford raptor isincredibly attractive, the new g-wagon one of the most popular vehicles on the market the ford bronco the land rover defender some of the most anticipated comebacks in the entire automotive industry mercedes-benz took advantage of that and took advantage of that by creating the 6x6, the 4x4 squared and many other variants of the g-wagon are brilliant and other automakers should do the same as to who buys these things, that's a different question.
I can't imagine trying to buy one, it won't fit in any residential garage, but you have to admit that if you like trucks, this is the ultimate truck and those are the quirks and features of the g63 6x6 and now it's time to get it out there. road and see how well it drives. The 6x6 is obviously the first thing you experience when you're sitting in this vehicle it's incredibly high higher than any lifted truck I mean it's very very high this is the level of semi truck delivery you know that kind of thing um it's the same as the 4x4 squared, more or less, uh, but That was ridiculous too, it has the usual portal axle problem, which is that the ride is a little unstable and when you get to the stop sign, traffic lights, when you When you stop, shake a little if you've never driven a vehicle with portal axles. a feature of them because of the all terrain tires the ride is a little harsher than you would expect once you get going it softens up a bit but the really amazing thing is how high up you are sitting and you are in a mercedes- Benz, I mean, you don't see that unless you're driving a Unimog, which you know you're not, interestingly, you don't really get the feeling that you're driving a huge vehicle, um. it doesn't feel as big as it is and frankly, compared to American trucks, it's not that big, um, it's a if you're used to driving, you know, super-duty trucks or even larger full-size trucks, you'll find that it's kind of reasonable the attention is pretty crazy no one has ever seen anything like this so you know you're driving a lifted truck a monster truck and a mercedes and it has six wheels which you know is crazy on anything and, um, a lot of people are. looking at what that thing is, but you feel absolutely and utterly invincible in this thing, I mean, you feel like you could pretty much overturn any vehicle out there without too much worry, it just doesn't have to be that fast, it's unusually fast, it's not like a car crazy sports car, I suspect 0-60 is probably six seconds, maybe a little faster than that, you know, the original does it around seven and a half or eight, um, but it's much, much faster than it should be.
This huge size, I mean, this is the heaviest vehicle I will ever drive in any capacity, short of a commercial vehicle or tank or something ridiculous and there's just no reason why it should be this fast and in fact I'm embarrassed admit how much. I love this, you know, the thing about this six by six is that it's just absurd and you drive it anywhere and it can't, I mean, it's just the optics of driving this, everyone looks at you thinking, boy, okay, that person. It really shows off, but it's so cool that you just want it, you want to have one, really one of the coolest things.
I know I'm not supposed to like it as a rational human being, like it's a lifted six-wheeler, it's horrible for the environment. It's too expensive and you think about all those things that you think you shouldn't like but then you look at it and you sit on it and you step on it and it's like I have no choice, I have to do it. I like it, it's too cool, it's too ridiculous, really, although you don't realize you're driving anything other than a lifted G-truck until you look in the mirror, but I will say that when you look in the mirror you see that. truck, you see the giant wheel arch back there and you're like, well, I'm the coolest guy on the road and there will be people I know in the comments who will say this isn't cool, it's a monument to wealth and bad taste man, I don't care, I think it's amazing.
I would definitely think differently if they made it in large quantities, like it was as common as a bird of prey or something, then it would start to be like okay, people are buying this. They don't use it for that purpose, but it's so limited that you just have to appreciate the fact that it was made, it was built, and that's the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 656. I've always wanted to drive one of these and I'm thrilled that I finally had the chance. chance to review this one and I think it's crazy that Mercedes-Benz ever made this Mercedes is known for conservative luxury sedans and boring luxury family SUVs and diesel European taxis, they almost never build a car.
That's not silver, black or white, much less a six-wheeled pickup truck, but I'm really glad they built it and I really think this is one of the coolest Mercedes-Benz models of all time and one of the vehicles coolest in history. the modern era and with that it's time to give the 6x6 a doug score starting with the weekend categories and the design of the 6x6 is not beautiful but it is cool, it looks very purposeful and muscular and gets a seven out of ten acceleration from zero to sixty in about six and a half seconds and it gets a three out of ten the handling is not great this thing is huge and the center of gravity is very high and it gets a three out of ten fun factor is huge it's very exciting and enjoyable and you can do anything with it anywhere and it gets an 8 out of 10.
The cool factor is huge too. They're so incredibly impressive that they turn heads more than basically any supercar and earn a 10 out of 10 for a total weekend score of 31 out of 50. Next up are the daily categories and features. The 6x6 is reasonably well equipped, quite comparable to regular G-wagon models of this era and gets a 6 out of 10. Comfort is okay, nothing special and gets a 6 out of 10. Quality is good, interior upgrades from the Brabus They are a nice step up from the normal g-wagon of this era and get a 7 out of 10. Practicality is tough because in some ways it is very practical, like the fact that it can be pulled. anything and store things in your bed and comfortably accommodate four adults while doing it, but of course it is also very impractical because its enormous size and height make it impossible to place it anywhere; gets a 5 out of 10.
Finally it has a value and this is hard, these are great but it's very hard to say that $1.5 million is justified, they are very expensive and it's hard to imagine they will ever go up in value from from there and it gets a 4 out of 10 for a total daily score of 28 out of 50. Add them up and Doug's score is 59 out of 100, putting it right up there with the most ridiculous off-roaders and the best luxury SUVs I've ever tested. The 6x6 isn't really comparable to any of these vehicles, but it holds its own. I guess it has the highest weekend score of any other except the jeep trackhawk.
Not that if you were shopping for a car you would ever compare the 6x6 to a trackhawk or anything else.
