I think it's important to frame what I'm talking about when I say about the landing. Obviously, it's a very broad thing these days and it could be anything. from a little weekend trip close to home or something like driving around africa and for the purposes of this video and when i say minimus overlander i mean everything from you are going to travel to alaska for three months or then you are going to give up turn around and go all the way to argentina

really

i mean a massive global overland trip through many countries tens of thousands of miles that's what i'm talking about when i say the minimalist overlander what do you really need?

the essentials for overlanding what you really need to have a grand adventure...

So what do you really need? Forget everything behind me I built this on purpose to drive around Africa for three years its a totally different ballgame what we are talking about so if you are going to hit the road and want to travel all the way to alaska no question . about it you need a vehicle and obviously our vehicle is a very broad thing to say personally i go four wheeling tons of people do it on two wheels on a motorcycle a lot more people even do it on a bike all those up where i'm concerned about the landing and if you

have

a decorated 4x4, if you

have

a subaru or if you just have a sedan again, that's all the landing.

I met a guy who just drove to the bottom of Argentina from Canada. driving a little vw sed and i think it was a jetta he had done the ride of his life so if someone tells you a small car hasn't finished landing they don't know what they are talking about so you definitely need our vehicle, I think it's an essential and you probably can't land again without some kind of vehicle and my advice is you don't need the latest and greatest you don't have to have four wheel drive you don't have to have all the most important advantages of all is a reliable vehicle that you trust even when in the yukon i had a subaru 450 i drove that thing all over alaska several multi day trips up to the arctic circle many times and that was fantastic but i didn't start those trips right away.

I bought the vehicle and started using it closer to home. I did a big round of maintenance. Everything, even new spark plugs. New rotor. New distributor cap. all of that myself and it got me familiar with the car and made me confident not about its reliability and then when the weeks turned into months and years it never let me down so I felt really good about how reliable it was so when we say our vehicle the only condition I'm going to put is try to make it a reliable vehicle that you know and trust the following that I really believe you can't land without a place to sleep and obviously that's very wide and yes you could staying in airbnbs or hotels all the time but maybe then you're blurring the landing lines so for my purposes i'm going to say you're doing some kind of camping but that could be a tent on the ground which could be a rooftop tent could be a pop up roof could be Sleeping in the back of your vehicle any of those things are perfectly fine so if you are on a tight budget like I was when I went to Arge ntina, I had my old tent that I already had for five or six years. that in the back of the jeep with a mat and a sleeping bag and i was ready to go i didn't spend more money than that and that boy helped me for two years from the top of alaska to argentina so if i can do it with that minimal kit many people can also build a platform in the back of their vehicle for maybe a hundred bucks a lot more people if you have the right vehicle just fold the seats and there's your sleeping spot you probably still need a mat or a mattress you probably still need a sleeping bag or really good blankets but certainly that's really what you need you don't need a rooftop tent you don't need a pop up roof which is the icing on the cake it's kind of a more version quirky in its basic form you just need a place to sleep next something on the list i'm going to add is a way to cook your food and again would you be able to make the trip if you were just going to restore before or street food all the time?
You probably could, but again my version of over landing is a bit more self-sufficient than that. You probably want to cook food if only to save money, but also so that when you get out of bed in the morning you can have a coffee like these things really are. nice, so I'm going to say something like that. from the kitchen setup on my trip from alaska to argentina i had my little backpacking stove i bought it 10 years before for maybe 60 i used it for the whole trip and it was amazing all over africa i just had a small coleman single burner burner stove which was awesome so don't feel like you need a big built in kitchen setup with two burners and a built in fridge and all that again that's the icing on the cake for alaska to argentina i purposely didn't have a fridge just decided which was too expensive Too much weight took up too much space in my little jeep I didn't have a fridge I didn't even have a cooler so no kind of yeti or anything that could hold ice and food so my trick was I just bought fresh food that tasted that it was going to go bad if I was going to eat it that day, so I would buy sliced meat, cheese, and bread and then eat it pretty quickly, while canned food, rice, beans, could be stored. cook them for weeks and would eat them later so you certainly don't need a fridge you don't need a fancy kitchen but i think you need a way to cook and guess what it's all you need to land on and i can tell you from experience i know that's true because that's what i did and i met other people along the way doing the same everything else you can think of you don't really need it you want it maybe it will make your trip more enjoyable probably but certainly not you need it I don't need it and don't let anyone talk you into it though if you love love love fly fishing and that's what you want to do by all means bring your fishing gear the whole point of the trip is enjoy it for me.
I personally loved hiking, so I brought a really good pair of hiking boots and a backpack so I could always go hiking. I didn't need them, but they definitely added fun to my trip. A couple of other items which, while you don't need, I think are very smart to bring and I wouldn't recommend. Anyone who goes on a trip without having them and the first is certainly a good first aid kit. The goal is to get a bit out of the way to get off the beaten path, so make sure you have all the basics. your first aid kit make sure it's easy to reach inside your vehicle it's really a good precaution to stand a chance if you're going to need band-aids you're going to need some sanitizer on the way i know i always manage to take the skin off off my knuckles every time i work on the jeep the same way i really recommend you have a fire extinguisher in your vehicle if you are cooking even if you are just driving long distances and remote vehicle fires really do happen and you know for 20 or 30 bucks I think that's very smart be prepared and have a fire extinguisher.
In fact, I have used mine in the middle of nowhere between Cameroon and Nigeria. I hope I never have to use it again, but I will always have one with me and if I wanted to. I could go all week like this you should probably bring some warm clothes especially if you're thinking Alaska you should probably bring enough drinking water to get you through a few days if your vehicle breaks down things like that basic

essentials

I guess all they will bring in anyway but in terms of really about the landing gear you definitely don't need any kind of navigational device I never had one you definitely don't need all the fancy recovery gear I didn't have any of which a lot of people don't have anything of that so you really just need the basics and while we're here leave me a comment below what do you think I was going to say that's really essential or what do you think is really essential and do?
Do you think I'm being a little insensitive here and a little nonchalant by saying now you don't need all those things, just do it. I'd be very interested to hear what you think and will make a follow up video if people really are. inflexible and if people have good ideas of what I consider good, yeah actually you probably need it so I hope it was helpful and I hope it once again makes you think and realize you don't have to spend a lot of money . I don't have to buy all that stuff that so many other people and so many other websites tell you is essential, you know I drove from Alaska to Argentina without most of that stuff and I ran into tons of people doing the same thing, even many the People are wandering parts of Africa without most things that are considered essential, so before you spend all that money on gear, think about what you really need for your trip and make it yours.
