The Broken Galaxy Folds: Explained!

Feb 16, 2020
Hey guys, mkbhd here, okay, there's something that was cut from my Samsung Galaxy Fold unboxing video, the last video from the other day, but you've probably seen it everywhere by now, mainly on Twitter, it all unfolded. at the same time, several

galaxy

folds

broke into the hands of reviewers around the same time for different but very related reasons, mine was one of them, so this is the

galaxy

fold

explained

, so three days ago, when I took that unboxing, I noticed what seemed to be a screen protector on the Galaxy Fold and you guys already know, every time there is film on the screen out of the box, whether it's facing the camera or not, I remove the plastic whether it's an Apple phone, a Samsung phone, whatever you take.
the broken galaxy folds explained
Outside of the pre-installed screen protector, you guys have seen this before, so on this phone there was what looked like a thin border around the inner screen, like the typical pre-installed screen protector, in fact, just for a view from the Galaxy S10 . I had a similar experience with Samsung as well. This is a brand new Galaxy S10 right out of the box and it has this pre-installed plastic that basically looks exactly the same, it has a border basically around it and it has a cutout around it. The drill shows a similar appearance. I would take it off immediately, so when I saw the same lip on the Galaxy Fold I thought, "Okay, let me add it to the unboxing video." I'll take it off and just peel it off so I pointed a camera at it and started peeling it off from the bottom where it's easier to get a fingernail under the screen protector so I started peeling it off and within a couple of seconds you start to notice that it is a little better glued than a normal screen. protector um and then when I get to a dime sized area in about five seconds the whole screen goes black and then like this little area there's like a streak and then the top left corner starts flashing ,uh, that's definitely not the case.

More Interesting Facts About,

the broken galaxy folds explained...

Well, I really broke it, I feel like an idiot and I regret not being able to keep that footage because it's on camera, literally, while I'm peeling it, the screen goes black, um, yeah, that. It was clearly not just a normal screen protector, so I emailed Samsung. They seemed to totally get it, which is interesting, but then they replaced the phone, so this is my replacement Galaxy Fold that I'm definitely not trying to remove the screen protector from, so I set up the new phone, everything is fine, I I've been using it ever since, but sure enough, yesterday I saw a tweet from Dieter from the Edge that my Galaxy Fold screen broke after just a day and this whole article explains it and I was like, wow, really! and then I see that on my timeline, all next to each other in a row, within minutes, there are other critics with a galactic fold saying: "Hey, my screen broke too, oh yeah, my screen too broke, mine too", all next to each other, so I'm reading this. everyone thinking, oh, I didn't realize I wasn't the only one, but now we have all the information on the two galaxy

folds

that had problems, so of the four galaxy folds that broke up in the last two days, these are the reasons why he broke up, so the first one dissuaded him.
the broken galaxy folds explained
It never messed with the film on the screen, but it started to develop this bulge for some unknown reason, like something had gotten under the film somehow and that bulge finally, a day later, blew out the screen, giving it these pixels stuck. number two steve kovach he didn't mess with the movie either but i look at the photos he sent before returning the phone to samsung and it doesn't look completely intact so it could have been damaged somehow but either way clearly didn't survive and it looks like half the screen is going completely crazy, so number three, Mark Germans, actually tweeted that the phone comes with this layer that he thought was a protective film, he took it all off so he must having survived that peeling, but that quickly caused the death of the screen, which slowly over the next 12 hours went from half black to two thirds black to completely

broken

and then mine had a few seconds to remove what I thought was that screen protector and then very decisively that is exactly what broke the screen, so they are two different types of breaks the way I see it, the first two from peeling off the film and the other two from simply damaging the screen or the film somehow due to regular use, which are the seconds. two that are much more worrying, but as far as the film is concerned, that's going to happen, people, psa, if you're one of the few thousand people, however many have pre-ordered the Galaxy Fold, don't remove that protective film, It could well be basically. part of the screen, in fact, dez from t-mobile tweeted this photo, uh, that started circulating, which is clearly a warning where it says on the plastic of the fold that it says that the main screen includes a special protective layer that is peel off that protective layer or Using adhesives on the main screen, such as a screen protector or stickers, may cause damage.
the broken galaxy folds explained
I mean, I should say that it will definitely cause a lot of damage and possibly break everything, but anyway the only problem with this warning is that it must be a bug. -Late edit related to mobile or carrier because this text is not in the packaging of any of the review units. I went around asking other people who had unpacked a fold if they had any kind of warning on their box. You can come back. and check out my unboxing video, there's definitely no text in that movie, you can also check out Lou's video, he did an unboxing, there's no text in that movie, uh, Joanna also confirmed that it didn't have any marks, the soldier who best knows he didn't have any either.
It's actually my Galaxy Fold packaging, there's no text on mine, which means that at some point between these review units being delivered and arriving at the carrier's stores, someone must have realized that they should probably put a warning somewhere and I think they are now realizing that the warning should. It's probably even bigger because no one really reads that fine print, but here's the thing, even if I've never tried to remove it from a film with a border like this, it will eventually start to collect a little dust and may even start to peel off the stuff.
In fact, Joanna, while tweeting a photo, has already started, this is her galactic fold and somehow managed to resist the temptation to peel, but the scariest part is that even if you don't mess with that movie at all, there is still potential for it to be damaged in some way due to regular use, so Samsung, seeing all of this in the last 48 hours, issued a statement that we don't really learn much from it, but they did it anyway, they said we received some reports on the main screen in the samples. as long as we thoroughly inspect those units in person to determine the cause of the problem, which is definitely due to the ones that were not obviously due to film peeling off, but then separately, some reviewers reported removing the top layer of the screen causing damage.
To the screen, the Galaxy Fold's main screen features a top protective layer that is part of the screen structure designed to protect the screen from unintentional scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesive to the main screen may cause damage, so we will guarantee this information. is clearly delivered to our customers, so essentially that's it, a foldable phone requires a plastic screen instead of glass and that soft plastic is the culprit here, as I'm going to guess, like level three scratches with deeper grooves at level four, if you know. What I'm saying, but this is brutal when it comes to PR, not just for Samsung but for foldable phones in general, even now I'm much more skeptical about the Huawei Mate Now I'm a little worried. that foldable screen is on the outside, how will it hold up in the hands of normal people?
It's pretty sad that it's going to affect the way people now think about these phones, to be very clear, I never really was. I'm going to come out and recommend people buy the $2 Galaxy Fold. I don't think most people do, but there's still a lot of room to be optimistic, like if you're a tech fan and support these things however you want. See things, these crazy new ideas really take off and gain traction so we can see a second generation and a third generation and then they can get better. One of the most common comments I've seen is people saying that Samsung should have waited and worked.
I continued with this until it was finished and ready rather than rushing into trying to be the first foldable phone, but the reality is that Samsung has been working on this for a long time. They said eight years of development, so you can only imagine how crazy it was. before in prototype form, so this is the point they got to where they felt like okay, it was ready, but failures happen in all kinds of ways and on all kinds of scales with all kinds of technological products, I mean everything , from butterfly keys to wireless chargers. to phones exploding and everything in between, it's just brutal when it happens to a product you're really excited about, although I guess you don't have to call this a flop just yet because as far as I know they're not holding it back.
Not at all, they are still going to ship Galaxy Fold in this first generation, it feels like a public beta test as we learned a lot from it, but that's our job as reviewers is to give this feedback and when it's in public hands, we're going to learn. even more stuff from it, but I think the main takeaway right now is that we have foldable phones. This is a delicate phone. The 200,000 folds of a robot do not necessarily translate into a lifetime of use by a human. something called user error and it's going to happen there are moving parts there is a hinge there is no water resistance like there are all kinds of new things to consider with a new form factor and this is definitely a hurdle in the way of them getting good like a nice big hurdle, but that's the thing is I still can't wait to genuinely say like in a future video in some video like 2023 where I can say, hey, foldable phones are getting really good, that's what you're looking for in technology, it's for things to get better and I still think I'm rooting for foldable phones to eventually get better, but with the current state of technology, we have some obstacles, but that's it, that's where we are, that's all the information about the pair of

broken

galaxy folds that existed in the world in the early days and what it means, but let me know what you still think.
I'm going to continue using this phone as my daily driver in the coming days for a full review and it will still be a pretty interesting experience, but let me know what you think, maybe you would still be interested in a Galaxy Fold, leave it in the comments section at continuation either way, thanks for watching, I'll catch you in the next peace.
