Teslas NEW CCS Adapter Blew Me Away | Charges EVEN Faster
Apr 28, 2023Today we're going to show you the new Tesla CCS combo one
adapter
, so behind me I have our 2022 model X and we have our 2018 model 3. So these are compatible with most Tesla's but right now they're only available. with newer models So today we're going to show you the incredible charging speeds on our Model X and show you what happens when you try to charge it in an older Tesla and unbox it too. we're going to give you some pro tips andeven
give you a little trick if you don't have one of these so let's go ok here it is back down it's pretty heavy but not too bad definitely not as heavy as the giant chadamoadapter
s if ever you've used one of those they're huge we've used it in previous videos so it's nice to have something a little more compact in terms of size you can see how it compares to the j1772 it's a little bigger definitely heavier but it's basically one step, so we've got the Tesla side, the CCS side, and we're going to test it out, show you what it's like to use the The adapter costs 250 bucks and opens you up to over 20,000 additional DC fast charging seats all over the country of course also has access to the 15,000 or so Tesla posts in the US sometimes some of these CCS chargers are actually quite a bit cheaper than Tesla chargers and the reason this is so important is because Tesla is gradually opening up supercharger stations everywhere, so it started in Europe and now they're going to go across the US.All EVS are going to be able to use Tesla's Supercharger stations, but a lot of Tesla owners aren't they like that especially in california where chargers are very busy so now it gives us access to other charging stations like evgo we can charge up to 2250 kilowatts with this it's nice we have those options in addition to tesla superchargers with this adapter so let's test it on an evgo station which is actually one of the most reliable chargers and runs on 100% renewable energy. which I really like and they
even
let you reserve a charger in advance so check them out you can download the evgo app and I'll link them in the description below now not all Tesla can use this yet but you can check in your car and see if you can get this now they're prioritizing 2022 new builds like our model X that's how we got it and I'm going to show you how to check if you can get this in your control and then go to the software and then here where it says additional vehicle information you can see it says CCS adapter support enabled so let's check our model 3 now and see what it says there so we're on our model 3 let's go to access the additional information of the vehicle from our control software and we will see how it says that it is not installed.Tesla will offer an upgrade for all older cars. This car was made in 2018. Basically it needs a new ECU and Tesla used to sell those but they don't now and there are a couple videos on YouTube that I'll link to where they show you how you can do the upgrade yourself if you can get the new ECU that it needs but it's only a few months
away
so IMO it might as well wait and Tesla does it. your Tesla was built before then you will need a Gen 4 ECU which is about 200 it takes about an hour to install of course if you are on the road a lot or live in a city where you are closer to CCS chargers than superchargers then it is Obvious looking at Tesla and other CCS enabled chargers, side by side charging speeds are pretty similar between Tesla superchargers that range from 72 to 250 kilowatts and non-tesla stations like evgo that can charge between 50 and 350 kilowatts the latest Tesla is only accept up to 250 kilowatts right now cost wise Tesla will charge you 30 to 50 cents per kilowatt hour to use so a full charge can cost you anywhere from 30 to forty dollars depending on the size of your battery compare to most CCS charging stations which is 25 to 45 cents a kilowatt hour and is twenty to thirty dollars ok let's make this year open I mean why not I'll show you how easy it is to enroll an auto charge plus. you're going to go here you're going to select your vehicles now I already entered our Tesla Model X I also already entered our credit card so I'm going to click apply to enroll yes I have one and there we are go we just select the station itcharges
and from here you can just pull the plug and it automaticallycharges
it. plugs right in check this out connecting to your vehicle did you know evgo runs on 100% renewable energy?I think it's amazing. I remember the day Tesla said they were going to do this, but they haven't done it yet. nice to know someone is making that happen and you feel good about the power here we go connection successful so we should be green let's see our upload speeds I'm very impressed with how fast this is going so we're actually in 28 when we plugged in but you can see we're getting 230 kilowatts so we've gone from 28 to 39 almost 40 percent here in just a few minutes and it's actually
faster
than a lot of Tesla's superchargers and you know if we If we were at a lower state of charge when we got here, it would have gone up to 250 kilowatts, so this is definitely a good way to go, so I'll go ahead and go through some of the stats here so you can see.I've gone from 28 to basically 50 in about seven minutes. We have a giant battery pack. We've drawn an impressive amount of power out of this, so here you can see we're paying per minute. Other states pay by the kilowatt hour. I love that you can sign up with Auto Charge Plus and it's like a Tesla-like experience. You don't have to like it. Take out your credit card and fumble around. In fact, you can even reserve chargers with the membership and everything is shown. of your stats here and it's really cute actually all Chargers have names this is Tabitha check it out we're at 4 20 so I had to highlight that because you know um 28 up to 64 right now and that's the cost right there but i love this app it shows you everything um you can see it goes up to 350 kilowatts everything in the app is very easy to use so i recommend evgo if you're looking to charge something other than obviously the Tesla chargers so I think I'm going to go ahead and tune out you can see we've gone from 28 almost to 80 percent in 20 minutes here um it's gone really fast it's really on par with the B3 charging but we've essentially doubled our supercharge network by having access to this so that's great here we go and see how much this costs ok thank you very much Tabitha our final session was six bucks and 74 cents not bad let's keep going go ahead and disconnect here we go very similar to Tesla charging no problem but now we're going to move on to our 2018 model 3 and show you what happens when we use the CCS adapter hopefully we don't mess up our model 3 ok so that's there , so this is what happens when it tries to load almost nothing we're stuck in this middle ground where it's trying to connect but can't read it basically it needs a new ECU so it can't connect right now so let's Go ahead and unplug it and then I'll show you half for someone to charge, so if you don't have one of these or have an older Tesla and still want to be able to charge on non-Tesla chargers, evgo is the only third party. fiesta charging station that actually has tesla connectors built in so let's go ahead and charge our model 3 foreign so this is really cool because it used to be that the only option was these giant shadow mode chargers so now not only do we have this but we also have evgo fast charging stations that have that Tesla charger built in so that's perfect it's like they know more chargers so it makes road trips so much easier and that's why that I love. to try evgo check out the link in the description below, so evigo offers all Tesla owners a three month free trial of their eb-go plus plan where they waive the 6.99 monthly fee for the period trial, so you receive no session fees. an extra 20 off your standard run and the best part is you can reserve a charger in advance, plus epigo has the Tesla-like self-charge plus feature where you can just plug in and your charge starts automatically without even having to swipe a card both new and existing evgo customers are eligible for the promotion and the only way to sign up for the free trial is through the evigo app so check them out below and thanks for watching and we'll catch you next time abroad .
