Tasting The Rare Gros Michel

Jun 10, 2021
Greetings my beautiful, beautiful, I'm Emmy, welcome back to another episode of fruit of fruits that have flavor, fruits that are fruity. Today's fruit is not so fruity because it is quite common and well known around the world and it is the banana that most of you know. It's actually not my favorite fruit, but today I'm going to try the original banana and it's called

gros

Michel or in English, big Mike. In the 1950s, a pest called Panama disease wiped out Michelle's plantations, so they introduced the Cavendish variety. of banana which is the variety of banana that we eat today and the reason why they chose this variety is that it also grew well and in similar soils to the Gros Michel but apparently the Gros Michel has a completely different flavor that's why when you try sweets like Laffy Candies with caramel or banana flavor, it has a banana flavor that doesn't taste like the banana they were used to because it was based on the Michel grill, so I had the impression that the great power was completely decimated, but it is not true , I contacted My friends at Miami Fruit sent me a huge sample box of bananas.

If you want to see the unboxing, I did a live unboxing and I'll put the video link in the description, so today I'm not just going to try the

gros

. Michel, but also some other varieties, but since I have such a big box of bananas I thought I could also cook a recipe, so I will prepare the recipe first and while it is cooking I will make the banana flavor. us, so the recipe I'm going to tackle today comes from Sweden and it's one I've had written down for a long time, but since I don't have a huge love for bananas, I've been avoiding this one, but it's called Flying Jacob or in Swedish it's Uganda called Uganda Uganda yahko so legend has it that this recipe was created and published in 1976 by a jakob sanur jacobson and he worked for the airline industry hence the name flying jakob now I have to wonder why a dish like this would be popular in Sweden.

More Interesting Facts About,

tasting the rare gros michel...

Bananas, our tropical fruit, are not native to Sweden. Why would it be so well received according to an article I read in Dark Atlas? This was a time of prosperity and increase in life. in Sweden and so they were looking for different countries and different ingredients from different places internationally, including things like bananas, curry powder, things that were new or relatively new in Sweden, so a recipe like this is easy to prepare quickly and it contains a fruit that is very popular even to this day so I have my oven preheated to 400 degrees and now I have a whole roast chicken and I'm going to shred it removing the bones and the skin my hands are spotlessly clean thanks Julia so in addition to the chicken and the bananas in this dish this will also contain peanuts, it can be topped with peanuts which is really interesting to me so this combination of bananas and peanuts reminds me a little bit of my pizza experiments that I did using the presto pizzazz device.

I tried some unusual ones. pizza flavors, if you want to watch that video, of course, I'll put the link below, so now we're going to sprinkle it generously with a little bit of Italian seasoning, so it's got a little bit of basil in it and a little bit of oregano, so it's still I haven't tried them. It's very nice banana, isn't it? This is the Poisson Rajah and it smells really good, so I'm going to cut it up nicely, look at that color, it's an orange color, how beautiful, and then I'm going to put it in our casserole.

I know these bananas don't look that attractive, but you're supposed to eat bananas when they have these little brown spots on them. Look, it's perfect than any other problem with this banana. I didn't notice that they seemed to bruise a little more easily. than the Cavendish but that's an advantage of that color that's the girl Michel is not that beautiful it's a type of orange very similar to the Poisson Raja oh man I can't wait to try them well now let's make the sauce that goes over our chicken mixture and banana, we're going to need this and this is Heinz chili sauce, have you ever used this before?
I don't. I just found this at the supermarket, on the top shelf of the ketchup section, people have told me. It's not the same as ketchup it smells like ketchup it's like tomato a little spicy anyway we need 1 cup of that a lot of people have asked me about this adjustable measuring cup. I'll put a link to my Amazon store. We will have a link to many of the gadgets you see in the kitchen, let's give this a taste, oh it's similar to catch up, it's much more tangy, not as sweet, it's not spicy at all, I expected that since it's called sauce of chili, it's a bit like cocktail sauce. but a little more concentrated it tastes a little more like tomato paste not bad ok a cup of that that's why I like this measuring cup look every drop looks so satisfying it's like a squeegee measuring cup , three cups of heavy cream, yes, I think this is what makes this dish delicious.
I just had cream everywhere. A good half teaspoon of salt and pepper. Now I'm going to put our lovely cream sauce on top of our bananas and chicken. Here we go, so now let's put this in a 400 degree oven and bake for about 20 minutes, it's all pretty edible as is, but we want it nice and hot, so while the Flying J mug is cooking, let's move on and let's do the banana taste test, so I have the bananas here, the first one I want to try of course is the gros Michel and I have to say from the beginning that they are much smaller than I thought the Cavendish bananas would be that we have now, they can be gigantic.
I actually have one here, so they are a little overripe, but just to compare in terms of size, you can see that the gros Michel is much smaller. I think we've gotten used to thinking that bananas shouldn't have any stains. but the little brown spots are indications of ripeness, that's actually when you're supposed to eat the banana because when you open it it's perfect inside, perfect, not mushy, not brown, not bruised, here's the Cavendish, now immediately, the Cavendish is very aromatic. It smells just like the smell you think of when you think of bananas, so the Gros Michel or the Big Mike are not as big and smell different than the Cavendish banana.
I'm going to smell a little like lemon, yes, I like it and cut it in half, see it has a kind of orange tint, a kind of bright yellow tint, we compare it to a Cavendish banana, these are much paler in color, they It surprises, it has a very pleasant flavor, it still tastes. like a banana and it has that slimy texture very similar to a normal banana that we all know, but it has a slightly different bite, it's not as soft, it just has more firmness mm-hmm and it has that banana-like perfume but it's not as strong in some ways I like it maybe I will come to like bananas does it taste like laffy candy?
No, it's not, now let's compare that with the Cavendish or the typical supermarket banana. mmm, I'm glad we did side by side, this one has a different texture, it's soft, err monsieur, and has a fluffier texture, it's not some kind of plan, a tiny bite and firmer like crow. Michelle the Cavendish is also highly scented. a very strong flavor of ripe banana and also the Cavendish flavor lingers. I think sometimes I have a problem with bananas and then I burp them up and I'm not a big fan of that, so yeah, the Cavendish I found actually.
It has a stronger flavor than Gros Michel and a softer, fluffier texture. Let's try a smaller variety and this one is called Mysore Day. Now we are going to cut it in half. This tube has a little orange-yellow when I cut it. this has a firmer texture we are similar to the somber Michelle then the Cavendish okay let's give this one a taste mmm I like that one too, this one I feel like in terms of texture it has a mouthfeel that is more of a cross between the Cavendish and the sombre Michelle are not as firm as the agar Michelle but not as soft and smooth as the cabinet.
The flavor is very pleasant and similar to Graham Michelle. It has a little acidity and perfume without being friendly. cloying like this and this is called Poisson Raja, it's about as fat in diameter as a Cavendish but much shorter, but this one also has a firmer feel, more like a sweet potato, it feels a little starchier again with that beautiful color in the inside mm- Hmm, this one has a little fibrous texture and a unique flavor, not so sweet floral and perfumed, very sweet, but the texture has a little fiber, something similar to, say, a sweet potato, finally I have this banana and this is called golden finger and this was the largest banana offered in my variety pack and immediately the skin feels drier.
This banana doesn't have as much curve and when I cut it it looks much more like the Cavendish on the inside. but unlike the Cavendish, it doesn't feel slimy or mushy on the outside mmm, it actually has a bitter taste, it's the smallest of all the bananas, but I like having that Tang, it's just not too sweet, so the inside it feels. very slimy and with loose collagen, although they ask for more starch to remain, so this kind of combination of starch morsel with slimy filling in the middle sounds terrible, but it's not. Here's Jakob's Klingon or flying Jacob fresh out of the oven.
We're going to top this with some chopped bacon to give things a nice smoky flavor. Then we'll add some roasted peanuts, so now for the big taste test, we're supposed to have the flying Jacob with rice and some salad, you know? the color of the sauce reminds me a little bit of a tikka masala but this isn't it its flying chicken jacob with bananas peanuts bacon so let's make sure we take a bite of everything so here's a little banana that looks like softened a little. chicken and I'm going to have a peanut - I present to you the lucky moth delicious absolutely delicious the cream makes a beautiful and rich sauce and in combination with the chili sauce it makes it a little spicy it makes it a little less rich it is tasty and The bananas are like a blank canvas, they just absorb all the flavors of the sauce, a little sweet, you have the smoked bacon which adds not only a little smokiness but also a little salt, you have braised chicken in this cream sauce , peanuts are great for adding a nice crunchy touch of richness and nutty flavor and I love peanuts and savory applications.
I think they just add a ton of flavor and richness and this is another great example of that, and then you have the rice. which is perfect for soaking up all this cream sauce, it's so good, so there you have it on my quest to find the gros

michel

or the Big Mike's banana. I finally tried the Flying Jacob, a casserole from Sweden that has bananas, chicken, peanuts, bacon. and cream and I have come to the conclusion that it is absolutely delicious, thank you all very much for joining me. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you learned something.
