backpackingfoods. I never realized how awkward eating on camera is until we started doing it. this show oh and this is a blind
tastetest so i won't know what food i'm eating so my original idea for this was to try all the vegan backpacker
mealsbut when i went to my local rei i realized that there were so many that it would be pretty much impossible to try all the
mealsso what I did was narrow down and take categories of different backpacking meals that I'm going to try so I have breakfast which is mostly oatmeal then I have a few as side dishes rice and beans some noodles e dishes and then stews the classics the classics whats the best real single backpacker yeah this is my favorite i love it good girl i mean the mushroom risotto is really good i think it might be my favorite your favorites they'll still be your favorites in the end you'll love you forever let's eat my production team has gone and opened up those five different breakfasts i had and put them in these containers to yeah i dont know which is which definitely this looks the most appetizing i am Hoping i like this one at least i just dont know what is that what is this is like crumbs sorry sorry container number one ok , my water has boiled and the next step is to make all these meals like this Since I don't know what they are, I also don't know what water I need, so I trust my producer to tell me that I'm ready to eat six ounces of water six ounces of water hot. minutes five minutes is ok about eight ounces of water er it looks like oatmeal five minutes this is fun 10 ounces looks like a lot of food and this cold water shake it off so since this one doesn't need to wait I'm going to eat it now so I don't like sitting down five minutes and then eats it disgusting and soggy wow it smells good oh wow there's blueberries in there i didn't see them before i'm assuming this is the granola because it's not hot mmm that was really good
tastes like it has milk though but i don't think i'll like it i want to keep going eating it, but I also don't want to because I don't have to try many other foods, so I'm definitely not going to this.
So far it's winning the race because it's the only one I've ever tried plus it's very easy ok this is I don't know what this is ok it's not very exciting I'm going to move on to the next one it looks very nice looks like cranberries and walnuts wow this does this one looks amazing this is really boring just pecan and cranberries oh am i being too harsh i feel like im being too harsh am i mean ok let's move on and then i'll do my assessment this is the banana one oh god mine smells like a banana oh ok the taste is great the bananas didn't rehydrate very well sorry bananas that could be my fault but it could also be your fault.
That was. I feel so bad about all this. This seems like a lot of food. I would really like to know what the calorie count is. but it smells so good it's a mush like the nice word for slop i don't know what that means slop but pigs eat porridge it's a good exercise that's ok maybe not very interesting it's ok doing this has made me realize how fussy i'm with the oats all these are like a version of oats i'm pretty sure especially these three and i think i like this one the best because it's not oats but i think this would be my number one i think this is my number two, three four and five all good let's reveal them ah that makes the art department nt sense art department wow there we go so I think I probably could have predicted that good takeout would be somewhere near the top because I really love their food they call this portion it's around 500 calories which honestly for backpackers is pretty reasonable for their breakfast so no wonder it's near the top.
I would never have bought a berry granola to go backpacking because it just wouldn't have occurred to me, but I was actually pleasantly surprised to see how tasty it was. this was so this banana oatmeal i think the bananas just didn't rehydrate the way i wanted it tasted a little like um it just wasn't good plus this is only 200 calories this is all 230 calories so that much less food than the other two which makes me sound a little worried would probably keep me from wanting to buy it this one is a little disappointing i feel like it sounds really good blueberry walnut oatmeal quinoa hot cereal but maybe Do it. at home and then this guy, what was he?
I like that one the best as far as ease goes these are all really simple but obviously this was the fastest and didn't require boiling water so I really liked it so it's still my number one still my number two really tasty three four and six number five it's just no breakfast that's breakfast we're going to make beans so these are our rice and beans dishes this is really interesting i don't like what i would expect i guess it's brown rice which is great these two will they look pretty similar i think that's tofu. I really don't know.
I'm going to go ahead and make them and then test them so everyone has two cups of boiling water and you wait 15 minutes. Let's do it. It's two cups of water. I'm excited. this one or ne, we're going to have enough water to do this, this is rice, it doesn't look like rice, it's ok, all of these have two cups of water, this one is already absorbing everything and I'll give you 15 minutes. Yay, it's been 15 minutes and now it's time to try all these foods. I'm much more excited about this than breakfast because I feel like I was a little negative and critical of breakfast, so I'm going in. this with a more positive attitude im excited for y'all let's try these good let's start with this one that looks like black beans and corn there is definitely some liquid on the bottom but it looks really good my mouth is watering i'm not even hungry i'm just excited oh yeah that's good it's pretty simple looks really appetizing to anyone so it's not spicy yeah it's good ok start strong good and good um what a back that's right that's my back good and fine i think that if i went to a restaurant and ordered that dish it would probably be ok depending on how much i paid for this restaurant dish i might not definitely go back if i was done backpacking and that was what i was eating i would be happy to agree and this is more black beans it looks like maybe the tofu is really weird there is a really weird taste in this what is it is very interesting i just wasn't expecting something that tasted like plantain or plata no this oh my gosh it smells so good wow wow look how fluffy this is so good i really like it i'll have it for lunch today ok lemme have this one look how creamy it almost tastes like a less good version of this , that's how I feel it was really good. our last meal is this guy that looks like red beans ooh yeah I must have not given him enough water or maybe this one takes a lot longer to rehydrate the rice the texture of the rice in this one is not as good as in these two which is weird because this is yes It's the longest, you know, because I started here and tried.
I don't know, there's still water at the bottom. Yeah, I just didn't rehydrate that well. I feel like this. it's like it knocked them all out of the park two three four five though oh i feel bad for this one i feel like i blew it this is hard why is it so hard this one is tastier than this one. i didn't do this correctly for rehydration i'm actually going to give this a number two so one two three four five final answer well that's what i expected coconut rice what the heck is there? plantain in this louisiana red beans and rice wow i know what oh my gosh wow fire pot im so impressed and 700 calories a bag thats 770 thats a good amount of calories for dinner after a long backpacking day.
That's great. time favorite mushroom risotto that was your number one my insensitive er one overall yeah that means that version of the same food is now number one oh my god ok we're going to be good let's get these things out of road beans for a second let's talk about these so I think these are just like two completely different dishes the flavors in this one are really strong they're very earthy and flavorful whereas this one is more creamy and rich so which I think if you like a simple risotto and if you want something that tastes creamy even though there isn't any dairy in it then this is really great but if you want something that is really unique and delicious this is really very good, I guess any food tastes better when you're hiking so I like my assessment of all of these would be really different if I only liked going on a 12 mile hike so the fact that I liked it as much as I don't even have hunger and i'm in and i'm not backpacking so he told me this is really good food yeah so t First it was rice dishes and then we're doing noodle dishes so this is our noodle category.
Obviously, I have four very different types of noodles. chili mac 2 i don't understand why people would eat chili mac backpacking because it's like a laxative it's like a poo inducer yeah now that i say i don't like chili mac i actually don't know i've ever eaten chili mac but maybe this sells me, maybe chili mac is really good and i've been missing this is the orzo and then what is this? Sort of rice so yeah not a ton of mystery with these but okay now it's just a taste test so first things first I know this one takes a bit of prep work huh?
Do you want to tell me what I have to do with this or do you prefer that I read it because I have already determined it? that this is obviously pad thai remove the peanut lime sriracha and peanut butter r packet you're going to add two cups of boiling water that's for later yeah wow that's so annoying you have to rehydrate wait 15 minutes and then you still have to do more work after that sorry i was wrong you need to add the peanut butter at this stage oh add peanut butter ok lots of ball ok so two cups of boiling water here and stir and cover for how long 15 minutes ooh looks good next 10 ounces i cover that one for 10 minutes 10 minutes oh wow ooh ok now i'm kind of intrigued by the chili mac because i only had 10 ounces of water it only takes 10 minutes instead of 15 to 20 one almost looks more like a stew two cups of water now we're back to the worst part which is the waiting so i'll see you all in 10 minutes just go downstairs it's been 10 minutes so now it's time to try my chili mac i am pretty skeptical wow omg this is so weird it's actually rehydrated i think really good i like that it only took 10 ounces o f water i like that too um only had to wait 10 minutes oh and i'll find it a little unappetizing in actually not bad actually like it I really don't love the amount of garbage bar prep work required for this.
I'm pretty sure it's the backpackers pantry. the chili came back more i said i might like it chilly and i whispered it thats how you know its not sure yet i mean the chili packet went so fast wow look oh this is ooh i think i added too much water ok? let's try this guy i don't like it if you like pasta and red sauce this is pasta and red sauce so you'll probably like marinara i don't know it's too boring this just tastes like crispy pasta and marinara sauce is ok and then this that's good this is tasty i feel like i would like this better if i knew what i was eating here is my debate this is obviously number four i'm going to pick this as number one because i think it's really interesting and tasty i'm actually debating which of these should be two and which one should be three because i like the taste of this i like the taste of this i have tried it before and i really enjoy it i can eat a whole bag no problem but this was so much easier this was so much faster ok i think i'm actually i'm going to hit chili mac number two pad thai three and this marinara four what is this? ok well let's find out obviously pad thai clearly there oh i got that three are on the mac no way good to go wow this video has become a battle between the fire pot and the good to go and like which one i like best fire pot is winning so what is this says von yes what is bolognese ok so there you go there are pasta dishes so its not a blind taste test for this one because it was so obvious we had pad thai , we had chili mac if you like marinara sauce then you will probably really enjoy this take out goodie they make some really amazing food. so there you go there are pasta dishes below and the last one is stew stew stew this looks really good that big piece of zucchini these look almost identical this looks like barely enough food so I'm really curious about how many calories its up against this one against these three so the water just boiled its time to rehydrate let's do it first 12 12 ounces how long are these 20minutes? this looks like a real meal the next one a cup and three quarters how long do you wait 15 to 20 minutes the last three that's a lot of water ok perfect so it's been 20 minutes and all my stews are they've rehydrated let's start with the kind of this is sad looking just soup soupy rice which is tasty it's a little weird i think it's just it wasn't rehydrated perfectly so there are some crispy bits of rice still it's good ok ok that it's sorry that's the least possible energy i've had after eating all this food i'm starting to think you know what they're all good wow look this looks so good huge chunks of zucchini looks like there's some quinoa in here that's great that's really good i like it tastes good tastes like something i would make at home although this doesn't look like much of a stew and this looks more like a soup this is a very stew-like stew a lot of the stew qualities there's broccoli in here i like it much the broccoli this is the most stew like of all so this looks huge it's like a huge amount of food this is amazing so I'm really surprised with how it's rehydrated I actually like this one better this it's good I like I like the broccoli the best in this one this is my favorite it's ok one two three and four this is the hardest category so far because they are all really good this one just doesn't seem like enough food it has a weird texture to that I don't like all the liquid take them out backpackers can't be redeemed no way wow backpackers pantry coming hot dammit im impressed now i know for a fact that vegetable stew three amigos vegetable stew is my favorite um but this vegetable stew three sisters is also very tasty and then what is this brand?
Sorry, Heather's choice, you're not my choice, Miranda's choice is this organic three vegetable stew, which is so delicious, is there any broccoli in here? feel cheated broccoli ok ok now what i have learned is that out of the four categories we did casseroles are my favorite casseroles ok this was my backpacker food taste test i think what this video really taught me is that i really like them I don't like marinara stews. I could have told you before the video and overall I was surprised by the brands and type of food I picked as my favorite.
