Surviving a -36° Night - No Tent & No Sleeping Bag
Mar 22, 2023thank you we are in the middle of a cold snap here in western canada temperatures to
night
are expected to drop close to -30 degrees celsius i have only brought five simple items with me and am spending thenight
here come to this area where i found this uprooted fir tree i'm going to use as part of my shelter but first i need to build a fire when it's so cold it's crucial to have some way to warm yourself thanks five foreign items i brought obviously my belt knife my ax and a pot inside my pot i have a Ferro Rod to light my fire and i have this bag with some food in it thank you alien it lit my fire i have some snow melting so i can stay hydrated now i have to shift my focus to making a comfortable place to sleep tonight alien alien thank you alien thank you foreigner there we have it finished very simple shelter nothing special just made of some dead logs and thick bark It's not. It's not perfect, there are holes and stuff, but it should do a good job of keeping the wind from blowing around here. I have a nice bow bed under me, put some dead branches in first to give me a little more Loft and then some green branches on top. For comfort, I expect this root ball behind me to get warm overnight as there is a lot of dirt and clean stuff. Hopefully the radiant heat from the fire will warm this back wall and then during the night it will re-emit that heat. and make the inside of my shelter nice and warm, but I'm going to have a bright fire burning all night, you can tell I left the doorway wide open, I'm going to have a nice long fire out front, so that's for me. it will provide a lot of heat all night keeps it burning i only have about 45 minutes to an hour of daylight left so i have to get going and start collecting foreign firewood hopefully enough wood to last me the night i guess that we'll find out I'm going to keep my fire burning small like this until I go to bed and then I start stacking the bigger logs the sun is fully set now the thermometers read minus 24 degrees Celsius so we're definitely dropping the temperature we'll see how cold it is all through I have a cup of fir tea steeping tonight at the moment so I'll take my little bag of food and eat dinner myself my boots were wet from working in them all the time day so I let them dry by the fire so for dinner I have to be true to the term survival food I have a heart attack and jerky so the meat is just salty dried smoked beef and hard is just flour and salt mixed into a thick batter and then rolled out thin and baked until it's basically a hard dry biscuit I actually made this over a year ago and stored it in a jar and it still tastes exactly the same as when I did it.
The good thing about these foods is that they don't require any special refrigeration or storage you can can them in the summer or when it's minus 20 degrees outside, you don't have to worry about them freezing, they're just foolproof foods that will fill you up, see if this Spruce tea is still there Too hot to drink, that's good, so I'll make sure my boots. they are nice and dry before bed that way i can sleep in them they should keep my feet warm all night i hope i have enough wood to keep a fire bright all night and i will be able to stay warm for this meal It may not sound like much but in the evening dried meat there is protein, there is salt, maybe even a little fat and in hard food there are carbohydrates and more salt, and my fir tea has a lot of vitamin C, it also tastes great, so it may seem quite simple. food but it's good food definitely fills you up and like I said having foolproof food like this is so ideal in the bush especially in these extreme temperatures you know when it's that cold you have to worry about things freezing and those things. just throw it in your pack and to do it this fire is getting amazing hot now that i have i am just putting all my long logs in here and will keep feeding them from the end i expect each section to last about 2-3 hours that should be it enough to get you through the morning.
It's causing incredible heat. Whoops, I just checked the thermometer. It's minus 28 degrees Celsius, so it's quite cold, but it's like a little warm bubble in this shelter. This fire is causing tense amounts of heat feels good well I have some food in my system I have a lot of water in my system I got my fire going real good boots are dry so now it's time for bed , try to get some sleep, we'll see how tonight I'm not really sure what to expect, but right now it feels great, so let's go to bed. Call it a night.
We will try to rest a bit abroad. Three in the morning. My wood is burning pretty fast. this and then there's a couple hours left with what's left over so maybe another four hours or so I'm still hoping to make it until sunrise we'll see how that goes just look at the thermometer and it's minus 32 degrees in this So far, sleep has been going well, I think I've been
sleeping
like 20 30 minute stretches awake. get up and turn around and heat the other side of my body this root ball behind me is getting a little warm like it's warm to the touch but it's not warming up like I thought it would so I really just trust the fire for me feet ok it's comfortable it would certainly be a lot nicer if I had my fleece blankets with me but for what it is it's a much better experience than I thought it would be now that I have the fire nice and lime and gone , although it feels great here again so I'll try to get some more sleep and hope my weight supply lasts till morning ok good morning I made it through the night the thermometer reads minus 36 degrees this morning just done colder and d colder overnight and it's a cold morning the night wasn't too bad kept my fire burning all night managed to stay pretty warm I ran out of firewood an hour ago had to go get some extra pieces just to hold me out until the loves nec my sleep wasn't the best which is to be expected when you don't have any sort of sleep system I definitely could have used my fleece blankets last night that was part of the challenge I did I still managed to get enough sleep.I probably slept for about 20-30 minutes every hour, so I probably ended up
sleeping
