Stop buying expensive smart phones

Feb 27, 2020
- "It's worth it"? Well, my friends, you clicked on the right page. For the past week, I have been driving this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip daily. And there are a lot of things similar, however, at $1,400, it really begs the question: Shouldn't you just spend that money on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or make better financial decisions? "I honestly want to know if you were able to 'put the phone in your pocket, that's all,' that's the tweet." Well, I mean, we can find out, I mean, (upbeat music) yeah. It actually fits perfectly in your pocket. "Does it seem too big, "or has it gotten to the point of almost being a tablet"?

I'm still a little on the fence about this one. So this is a 6.9-inch

smart

phone. It's big. It's very big and like someone who is not normally a big fan of big

smart

phones

, it's a bit annoying, right? Especially last night, while browsing Twitter, I was on the phone for about 30 minutes and at that time, I used a bit of grip with. the pinky, and I was starting to feel a little heavy and annoying "Does it come with a transparent case in the box" like the Asian markets do, we get the phone itself, the fairly robust power adapter, the USB-C cable? to C and a pair of AKG USB-C head

phones

"Does it come with a screen protector ready to use?" Is it really worth going above 120 hertz over "a normal 60 hertz phone"?

More Interesting Facts About,

stop buying expensive smart phones...

Yes. So last year, of course, OnePlus launched 90 hertz displays. This year, however, we get a full 120 hertz on the S20, S20 Plus, and Ultra. So I went into much more depth on this in my podcast The Test Drivers, which you can shamelessly download at the link in the description if you haven't subscribed yet. (clears throat) I'm sorry, what was that? (clears throat) Right out of the box, you can see it set to not only 1080p resolution, but also a standard 60 hertz smoothness. Now the thing is, well, I mean, sure, for some people that might be okay.

When you pay that much money for a phone, I mean you have to turn it on, right? Am I uncomfortably close right now? Look, Ken is gone, he's in Japan right now, I had to record this video by myself. So things are going to get weird, I apologize. The main downside is that you have to run it at 1080p to get the full 120 hertz experience. If you want the full resolution of this phone, which would be nice, especially considering how big it is, you need to run it at 60 hertz. So your trade-off is literally full resolution at 60 frames per second, or a lower resolution at 120. "Geekbench or AnTuTu benchmark"?

This is the first time I've used a device with the Snapdragon 865, which as you might expect, is the most powerful Android phone yet, easily beating last year's model such as the Galaxy S10, as well as the OnePlus. However, while it's more powerful than most Android phones, if you compare it to something like the iPhone 11, it's close but still lags behind specifically in a single thread. "How fast does the phone unlock "with the in-display fingerprint sensor"? Okay. From what I can tell from speaking to Samsung, it's very similar, if not identical, to the sensor we had on the S10 last year Which means okay, I will say that after spending the last week with the Z Flip as well, I prefer how fast the actual side-mounted physical fingerprint sensor is on this phone compared to the S20 Ultra but on. not really a major improvement over last year. "5G Speeds"?
So I'm using the S20 Ultra on T-Mobile's 5G network now I have 5G here at the office, however what I have is their. 5G sub-6. Which means it's similar to 4G LTE, except it's faster, but it's not as crazy as some of those mmWave speeds that you can see on other networks and that technically, the S20 Ultra does support, yes. was on. Let's say like Verizon or something like that. But hey, let's do a speed test and see. I have full bars of 5G right now and I'm getting 40, 50, 50 megs. This is a step forward for LTE and is generally better than most LTE.
It's not as crazy as some of those mmWave speeds you've probably seen in videos like Marques's. "How's the battery life been?" Good. So, of course, one of the Ultra's top features, among many, many ridiculous specs, is a massive 5,000 milliamp hour battery. Now, to be fair, I haven't spent enough time understanding this, especially since I haven't been on any type of millimeter wave 5G, it's been pretty standard usage. But I've easily been able to get through a full day of use with this guy, which shouldn't be a surprise, even with that 120-hertz display on. "Is 100x space zoom just a gimmick"?
Well, no. So this has a 5x optical zoom, not a 10x optical zoom as I was led to believe before. (clears throat) So if we jump to the camera, you can see if I switch to ultra wide angle, that's night mode, I don't want that. But I switch to ultra wide, you can see that obviously very wide field of view, I switch to standard, it looks good, but as soon as I zoom in, I'm at five times, and that's actually quite a bit. significant zoom. You can really see much closer. However, once you start going beyond that, it becomes a little sketchy.
So if I open this feature again, we can go to 10 times, which, let's say, I want to look at the camera on the ceiling, well, that looks good, and it's certainly better than something like the iPhone. It's actually quite impressive what you can get even with a 5x zoom. So if I zoom in about 30 times, it doesn't look very impressive, until you jump to the wide angle and see how far away you are. It's not a perfect setup, and I think the fact that they put that 100x space zoom on the back is a bit disingenuous.
But I think there's no doubt that this is one of the best zoom cameras you can get on any phone. "Austin, they touted the cameras on this," and I mean, they touted the cameras. "So my question, "how does this $1000+ phone compare" to the point and shoot camera "like an RX100 or G5X"? It's good, but not that good. So I took a couple of sample photos, I'll show you right now. So if you zoom in on a shot like this on the RX100, you'll see that it's really nice, you know, they have a little bit of depth of field in the background, a lot of detail.
Now, if we switch to the Samsung, You can see it has that larger sensor. And with the 108 megapixels and that huge sensor, it actually gives us a little bit of depth of field, especially when you go to the beard, there's a lot of extra detail that I'm not really a big fan of. fan. And if I switch to the iPhone, you will see that it is not as good, so I will say that the iPhone does not sharpen things Almost the same, and this is just a sample But on the other hand, what we are seeing here is something. whose white balance doesn't look that good and the color seems okay, but not particularly impressive.
So, to summarize, if you look at the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra next to an RX100, it comes reasonably close, but it's not as good and there's probably still a good couple of years difference between them. Especially considering the RX100 has a much better lens. There are many things you can do in software to improve color and dynamic range. At the end of the day, a lot of this comes down to the glass you put in front of the sensor, and that's just not something you can really take smartphones that far yet, unless you want to have lenses like this come out of the box. back of your phone. "Is 8K video as good as the RED camera"?
So to contextualize right now, I'm recording with a RED 8K camera. Although, to be fair, the lens is much nicer than the S20 and the color has been custom profiled for this location. However, this is what it looks like when we record 8k video on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Now we are recording it at the same 24 frames per second, however, something I really noticed is that when you go from 4k to 8k, it gets very noisy. So this isn't exactly a dark environment, but it's not a super high environment, really a very bright one. And as you can see in the RED, it handles it without problems.
There's basically no noise, and again, we custom built this whole set up for RED, with the exact same settings, you can see that while 8K video isn't terrible, it's certainly not as good as a true 8k camera. . "How about a comparison of low light photography"? So last night I had some time to take the S20 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip, and iPhone 11 Pro for a little photo test. And in general the results are good. Now I will say that I am not a big fan of the way Samsung's night mode works. So some shots actually, I will say, didn't even want to go into night mode.
And some of them looked pretty good. But when you click on that night mode, unlike something on the Pixel, which I think generally speaking, it does a very, very good job of balancing a long exposure with multiple exposure and blending them well. The S20 Ultra would like to sit there and say, "Oh, I need a 10-second exposure." And you can see a shot like this, it just doesn't look as good as something like the iPhone that only took a couple of seconds to do. And a lot of that because when you have such a long exposure, you have to hold the phone exactly straight for about 10 seconds.
It's hard to get any kind of real detail there. Now look at some other shots, it's significantly better than something like the iPhone or the Z Flip. But for the most part, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I think the iPhone and Pixel may still have a slight advantage in night mode, but we'll see when I spend a little more time with them. Overall though, it's good, not amazing. "Is the selfie camera better than the normal "and plus" versions? Unfortunately, I only have the S20 Ultra and at the moment I will get my hands on the standard S20 probably in the next two weeks, but I can compare it again with the iPhone, as well as with the Z Flip.
So let's see, we put them all next to each other, I think it's pretty clear to say that the S20 Ultra wins now I slightly prefer the look of the iPhone when it comes to color, but the. Extra detail on the S20 Ultra is actually quite evident. Although I'm not entirely sure how many people want that much detail in their selfies, isn't that what the beauty modes are for? Can the S20 Ultra record 60 FPS" with? the three cameras like the iPhone 11 Pro"? No. So if I go into the camera app, when I'm on 4k 60, it just doesn't give me the option to zoom in or out.
Now if I go into the settings and change it to say 4k 30, you'll see now I have those options So while I'm recording, I can easily go in and out and it will work. However, at 4k 60, you're stuck with just the standard wide angle camera. "What significant difference does it have" coming from the S10 or the S10 plus? Does this really qualify to be Ultra? So that's really the main question of this video, right? Priced at $1,400, is the Galaxy S20 Ultra really worthy of the name? I would say yes. So while it's very

expensive

, it's very big, but this is a ridiculously spec-hungry monster, right?
I mean, you've got a 108-megapixel camera, 5x optical zoom, 100x space zoom, 5,000 milliamp-hour battery, the fastest Snapdragon 865 processor you can have, you've got a 120-hertz display, I mean Yes, this really is the most ridiculous, over-the-top phone I can think of, and you have to pay the price for it. I guess at the beginning of this video, is the Galaxy S20 Ultra worth it? It depends. Are you a person who just wants a good solid smartphone, with decent cameras? The standard S20, the iPhone or the OnePlus, there are plenty of other options that will be fine, right?
This is not for you. The S20 Ultra is only worth it if you're one of those nerds who really wants the absolute maximum. And I don't mean nerdy in a bad way, right? If you really want that ultimate experience, the Ultra offers something you can't get on any other phone right now. The cameras are pretty good, the battery is huge. There are many things I like about this phone. So if that's what you're interested in, if you really want the latest, greatest, ultimate, I mean, sure, you could be perfectly happy with the Z Flip, and just with its form factor, but for the price. , you get a lot less specs, you get a lot less of almost everything except novelty.
While the S20 Ultra really offers over-the-top, ridiculous performance. So I'm curious, what do you guys think about the S20 Ultra? And if you enjoyed this video, definitely make sure to subscribe to the channel. Because well, I love you and I hope you love me too. And we all know that the only reason to show love in this world is by ringing the notification bell.
