Aug 07, 2023
- SQ3R, is one of the most popular

study

strategies that students use to read and

study

for exams, but the problem is that it is outdated. It was introduced in the 1940s, that is, almost 100 years ago. And since then, research has found better ways to study. - We know that students are looking for better ways to study. So we went ahead and revamped the SQ3R, and our new method will help you read the material, understand it, and remember it so you can get better grades. The old SQ3R stands for survey, question, read, recite and review.

You survey what you are about to read and then ask questions

based

on what you surveyed. Then you read the book to find the answers to those questions and you recite them out loud, to understand them in your own words, and these become your notes. And the last R is review. You want to review all those notes before taking the exam. Now, the only part of this that we want to keep the same in our updated version will be the S. We have a different version of the Q and we want to change the three R's to something else, something better, rephrase, remember. and repetition.

The old SQ3R teaches you how to write notes and then review them for your exam. Well, the problem here is that science actually shows that this is an inefficient way to study. However, many people still do this because they are not always taught the most effective way to study in school. The best study strategies include active memory, spaced repetition, and the Feynman technique, and our new SQ3R incorporates them all. - Here is our new and improved SQ3R. S will remain the same, it will continue to be a survey. So in this step, they will quickly skim through the chapter and read all the headings, bolded words, key terms, and look at pictures and diagrams.

You want to get a general idea of what you are about to learn and see how the author organizes the information. Next is question Q and we have a different opinion on this one. Instead of asking questions about what you just surveyed, we suggest you go directly to the source. If there are practice questions in your textbook or review questions at the end of the chapter, use them as a guide. You can ask your professor directly, since he or she is probably taking the exam, or you can request old practice exams if they are available. But these questions are important because, A, they are your notes and B, they force you to read with a purpose.

You are trying to read to find answers to these questions. Next we have the three Rs. And the first R is rephrase. And this R will help you understand the information. So, as you read and find an answer to one of the questions you just wrote, you want to rephrase this information, you want to pretend to teach that information to someone who doesn't understand it. This means that you can't use complicated words, but you must rephrase them in a way that they can understand. And write all this down word for word if you have to, these are part of your notes.
But if you have trouble explaining the information in your own words, you probably don't understand it well enough. The next R is remember, and this will help you remember what you have read. So the old SQ3R tells us to review our notes, but the best strategy is to remember them. So this is how it's done. When it's time to study for the test, go back to the questions in step two and don't look at the answers, just read the question and then try to remember the answer without looking. One of the best ways to make sure you can't cheat or look at your notes is with flash cards.
And we highly recommend making digital flashcards instead of writing on sheets of paper, but remediation forces you to study in exactly the same way you'll be tested, which is better than revising, which is just rereading your notes. The last R is repetition. You want to use this in combination with retrieval to further solidify the information in your memory. So by repetition we mean spaced repetition, spacing out the frequency with which you will practice remembering. This is how you can do it. So, one day after your exposure to the material, you should practice remembering the information again, then four days later, you should practice remembering it again.
And then a week later, remember it again. You want to space it out. Simply review the questions you wrote in step Q and then practice remembering the information over and over again and over time it will stick. If there are many days left, but then you don't remember the information, then I would restart the whole cycle and start from the first day again. - So, that's our new SQ3R. We had success using it throughout medical school, and our hope is that you can also have success using it in your own studies.
