Spring Home Tour - Here's What's New Around Our Historic House! - Easter Decorating

May 05, 2020
So I thought it would be fun to show you around the

house

and show you some of the Easter and

spring

decorating

I did this year and also share with you

what

I've been up to. and different little things that I've been doing around the

house

and projects that I've done since the Christmas video, so I'll start with that, so since Christmas I moved this table and chairs by the windows, those of you watching. My Christmas Home Tour video will remember that I used to have the big Christmas tree

here

and this table and chairs used to be right in front of the fireplace, but I think I really like this place and it kind of fills me up. this room because without it I just wouldn't have had a bunch of furniture just gat

here

d in one space and then very, very empty rooms, so it gives the illusion that we have a little more furniture here and on the table I just arranged some of these kind of amber jars with some

spring

flowers and these cool things from

home

and garden magazines from 1947.

I thought the colors were pretty and technically I know this one says January, but I liked the colors of this one better with the decoration I had here. I don't know if I've shared it before, but I thought it was just an absolutely adorable footstool. I found this in an antique store and so I decided to put it with these chairs although technically the upholstery is different but I still think it goes really well with the little sitting area so here are those little pots that I painted in that video. They started out as, you know, regular terracotta pots and then.

More Interesting Facts About,

In the video I show how to give it a sort of rustic patina instead of the very solid clay color that the pots had before and then I just put these green spheres in them to give it a classy and elegant look. For the mantel, I thought this guy was super, super neat. I bought it at an antique store. I think I bought it after Christmas. I'm not 100% sure though, but I love the face and turned on the fireplace even though it's not there. It gives off heat because it's an electric insert, but it's cozy so I used it quite often.

I found this little pot at a local antique store this year and only put a few sprigs of greenery in it, but I thought it was pretty. cute and I don't really have much Easter decor so it was fun to come across something like this and my computer case is finally set up this is where I do all my video editing and photo editing and writing and it all happens so yeah, it was taking me forever to set up and we probably lived here. I mean, I actually did it after Christmas and we got here in July, so finally, but the nice thing is also that if I don't want this to show, I can close the doors. and then it's just a little cabinet in the corner.

I pulled out my old Easter cards. I always think they are so cute. I love the art they have. I thought maybe I could take a little time just to show you a close up. The look of some of them just the colors are very pretty. I love baby chicks, they are very cute and surprisingly a kitten. Something that's always interesting when you look at them is that the size and proportions of things aren't exact, but it just lends itself to a whimsical feel, so when we have a rabbit playing the violin for some chicks, a lot of images of chicks in these , I thought this one was really cool, just interesting colors, and then we have the just adorable bunny band.
I found these in antique stores, some I bought as gifts, but you can find old postcards like these many times in antique stores for between 50 cents and three to five dollars a piece most of the time. Pretty cheap, although the Halloween ones are a lot more expensive, but I think that's just because they're a little rarer and I have these little ones up for grabs. I thought they were from Easter, they're just kind of old toys, technically they have a I can line them up with a key and then they just do their thing, but they got lost, yeah, this one had a little bit of wine left in it.
In fact, I discovered that one of my miniature clock keys works to wind them, which was a fun discovery so I can make them do their thing if I want, but yeah, those are the Easter decorations there and here. I just put some of these cute eggs in this that I bought at an antique store for a couple of dollars. I don't think he's old. bought it, I just thought it was cool and it's always fun to decorate them. I don't know if I've ever shown this before, but this was another antique store find. I don't know, I just thought the pictures were really funny. and with all this staying

, I did my best to get the dents out of the couch, but yeah, I got my Easter cut.
The Martha Stewart Spring Magazine here, magazines have been a fun thing to get hold of, especially now that we're into more. Best Houses and gardens and of course birds and flowers, yes they have been fun to explore too. I started buying houseplants. My brother always used to joke why not. I wasn't the best at keeping houseplants alive because I always wanted to put them in a place in the house that didn't have a window because I always feel like they bring life to a space but obviously they need sunlight and in this house that's not very difficult because There are a lot of windows, so I bought this.
Lily piece a while ago and I thought I'd add a nice touch of greenery to this corner, it's quite big and then I have it in a pot that has like a tray underneath so that if it gets too much water it doesn't go bad. on the floor, but I placed the pot in this old box I had just because I thought it gave it a more rustic look, so in the dining room this is

what

it looks like now, table set for two for Easter this year. because we'll be at home but I still think it's important even if we're stuck and I don't necessarily think we're stuck at home but I do think it's important to do something special even if it's just for a couple people so I set the table a little bit.
I still have more to do. I actually bought these napkins a while ago at jo-ann fabrics and was like, yeah, this is something fun for our Eastern Easter table. These plates I've had for quite some time actually are one of the first sets of plates I started collecting and I have quite a few more pieces here that I've just added to the collection over the years. This frog image was actually one of the first articles. It was him and these chicken dishes, but after that I found matching cabbage dishes and the cabbage rolls and this I bought on our trip to Portugal a few years ago, so because this dinnerware is actually made in Portugal and When we were there I thought, Oh my God, because a lot of the stores had these plates, so I have some to bring.
I even have some bunny ones, but I love this collection, it's very cheerful and goes with most. seasons, so I decided to display it in this cabinet because, if you remember, in my last video, my last Home Tour video, there was a lot of Christmas decoration in here and before that there was a lot of Halloween decoration, so here's how I decorated the kind of thing which I am using as a buffet in our dining room. I have my artificial orchid which came very cheap and came in a pot which was a bit hideous and cracked so I took the realistic one I thought.
I planted and put in my own pot with just a little bit of floral foam and then added a little bit of moss just to make it look a little nicer, but yeah, this is what it looks like now, I've got my cute little silver bunny here. I love the face on this one, I don't know, and up here is a painting I did on this old picture frame that says stare at the canary and then it has its birthday, so that's kind of a canary egg to represent. our bird people I thought it was a bit of a whimsical idea and the frame was already shaped like an egg and I thought it would be fun so they did it, but yeah, this clock here is the clock that has the key that fits with those little bird toys. metal for chicks, so my brother brought this, which I was very excited about.
He used to be at our grandmother's house. It's actually painted upside down on the glass, so you know all the details, like the eyes. I would have painted it first and then more or less from there, so it's even more interesting when you know more about it and then it appears, I think the accessory is really nice so I have yet to find a place for that. quite a few ideas. I've just been lazy and been working on some other things and this I had put in this little pot so I just wanted to add more greenery around the house so I found this fake plant at I think HomeGoods and then put it in a pot different, this is what the kitchen looks like these days.
The cabinets feel a little bare after removing the Christmas wreaths. I thought about adding some normal greenery, like maybe keeping boxwood wreaths, but I've just done it. I didn't really find any that were the size and look I wanted so far and of course we're not currently going out shopping so that's been postponed a bit but yeah this is what's happening in the kitchen I found this at an antique store in Stillwater Minnesota, the guys like its colors and you know, it's paper, but I thought it was really cool and it's pretty old, so it's always interesting to me when paper items last so many years. and in the corner here you can see my other new purchase, this squirrel cookie jar, so I found this in an antique store in Fergus and I thought it was too cute and our house has a thing for squirrels, there's just a lot of them. squirrels around here and it just spoke to me because of that and also because it was so cute and instead of cookies I've been storing like my or some of my k-cup type things in here, but yeah.
It was a really fun find and then I have some faux tulips here just to add a little bit of spring to the kitchen. I tried baking cookies yesterday. They don't look very amazing but they taste good so I guess that's what counts, maybe uh. -Hey, it was a recipe that I had never made before and in fact I didn't read the whole recipe before I started mixing the ingredients because I was looking for a cookie recipe that didn't need brown sugar and this one. It didn't need brown sugar and a few other things, it was a pretty simple recipe, so it will end up being the style of cookie that bakes exactly as it is when you put it on the baking sheet, which is why the first round turned out.
They looked like mounds and then in the next two rounds I decided to flatten them to make them a little more cookie-shaped, but I wouldn't say it was a complete failure because they actually taste really good, there's no chocolate or anything in them they're just chopped cashews without salt and then they remind me of shortbread cookies in terms of flavor, but anyway it was fun to bake something, anyway, I also put this cookbook together because I thought I know it was kinda cute, kinda what I mean Well, it looks very Minnesota with some of the other decorations I have lying around, so here's another plant I bought.
I've been wanting an ivy for a long time and finally got one so I have this in the kitchen window and I feel like this new edition practically needs a base drop because we didn't have a dishwasher for quite a while once we moved here and my uncle visited and installed this. A long time ago, it was sometime after Christmas, and it's been really nice to have a dishwasher because obviously we don't have to wash things by hand unless they're old dishes and things like that, and it's a huge time saver. Now that we're cooking from home like always, you know, it's really nice to have an easier and faster way to clean up after cooking.
I would say it's actually been fun cooking at home because if anything, I think we've been eating healthier than before because we're not going out to eat places with greasy food and things like that as often, so I think it's been fun. been a good thing in that sense, you know, you also know how to cook at home. a lot of times it's less expensive, so it saves money, but we cook so much that it's good to say that it cooks so hard that the handle fell off of this pan we have, which was a little surprising because I was cooking something and it used to have a handle on both sides and I was lifting it up and the handle was like a mess so I don't know if I was supposed to disagree and I was thinking, God, that could have been really bad because you know you have hot food and it was like pasta and sauce for pasta and if that were to spill on someone that's been pretty dangerous, but yeah, and we've since ordered a new frying pan that finally arrived in the mail, we just have to run it through the dishwasher, but yeah, I think.
That's probably the last time I'll buy pans from that brand just because it could have been pretty bad, so other things since Christmas they already had this kind of mats in pieces or things like that, but they were just playing around. gray so I decided to update them and give a small staircase a little more sophisticated look so it was a fun and very easy project and I mean I think it did a lot for the look of this staircase. So it was a quick and fun project that I've been doing since Christmas. I have a little Easter or spring color here in the hollow of theladder and go up the stairs in this window.
Got some little Easter touches. It's actually a fun musical, but I thought it was kind of clean and neutral and they fit well in there and these little sprigs of greenery that my brother gave me, so I just put them in this funnel, but yeah, and along this video I'm just saying that many of you may notice that our windows are incredibly dirty and the reason is that there is really no way to clean the other side of the glass without removing the old shutters, so eventually I hope to find a solution to that problem , but for now unfortunately I can only clean the window surfaces that I can.
Another thing I've done since I've been home is replace the hardware on this cabinet, so it used to have fancy, silver looking knobs and hinges, probably retro style, and then I painted the hinges and then added the new hardware. I know this door is open a little bit and that's because over the seasons that expands and contracts a little bit and it's gotten a little bit smaller now or it's been a little bit smaller, I should say, and so it is. . It doesn't stay closed so I plan to put one of those magnets in there to hold it up but for now it's just another project on the to do list and I guess in this little guest room I've changed a few things so this bedding doesn't stay closed.
I remember if I got this bedding for Christmas, but anyway I thought it was really pretty and it's not necessarily wintery because if you look at the design it has blades of grass and stuff like that, so yeah. I plan on making this an all season bedding set and then this pillow. I thought it was a classy color to pair with, so I think it will be an accent color, like a gold to blend with the rest. of the room and I changed the bed so that it was cornered enough for you to see so the bed is now in the corner but the reason I didn't do that before and in my last house in your video I was talking about why What I couldn't have it in a corner and it's because the headboard is not actually attached to the bed so I still have to find a way to attach the headboard to the metal bed frame because this bed is a 3/4 size . but the mattress is a queen size so basically a 3/4 bed would be too small for the company to write to sleep on so I have always had the headboard behind it against a wall with the metal bed frame. and a mattress sitting in front of it, but in one corner I need to find a way to get the headboard attached because right now if you just push it it will probably lean so for now it's just to look at until I can figure it out.
I found a way to make it a little sturdier, but let's see here, I have a bunch of decorations that I have yet to find a place for. I have this mirror in that antique store and I have yet to find a place to eventually want to hang this photo. I don't know if I talked about it before, but briefly my grandmother used to have this picture hanging in her lake house of hers and we thought it was super cute and she bought it. when she found out she was going to have twin grandchildren and growing up I remember seeing this, you know, at her house and I decided I wanted one for my house and I looked online for a long time and long story short I finally found it and I ordered one print to the artist and then framed it, so I plan to have it here, probably on the wall.
I'm somewhere around here, but I haven't been able to hang it because hanging pictures on plaster walls is not that easy. easy like on drywall, but there's not really much new in the clawfoot bathroom, so it's pretty much the same thing, so then we go up to the third floor and we've been working on a few different projects to make it a little bit more. homey and finished looking, so one of the things we've done so far is paint the stairs. Now these weren't wooden before, as far as the wood finish, they were already painted in two different gray colors, but now we made them.
This nice white looks a lot cleaner and a lot brighter and we still have to add some sort of trim to the trim here and we still have to paint the walls, but otherwise I think it did do the little staircase a little bit. Prettier so up here we painted it so it used to have kind of a stencil border on a lot of the room so we painted and decided to paint it this light brown color so it wouldn't get too dark and then I painted the beams that used to be white this dark brown color just to make them look a little more rustic and like beams and then I painted some of the diagonal lines in the room the same color, I'm just telling you to give it a little bit of a more architectural look and then we start with the floor, so this is all we've gotten for Totten so far, but it was kind of a job with the way the room is formed, so I'd say we're probably on the verge of not doing it.
I don't know, about 1/4 of it is done, but yeah, in this other room it's pretty similar to how it was at Christmas, but here I have some Easter decorations and more old Easter cards that I thought were pretty neat and taking the picture of her bunny, some Easter eggs and I bought a pen and some ink because I thought it would be fun to write with one and it's been fun to use on occasion and I also bought this wax seal. and look, it has an owl on it so I thought that was really fun to find and it's just a box of old looking note cards that I ordered but had planned to send around Easter but because of everything going on I've decided to Instead, send only digital pictures to people just because there's a little less chance of germs, especially for those who are a little worried about that, so that's what I'm doing for that this year and this is what that is seen in this room.
So far, I'm thinking about hanging the piano keys above the fireplace, but I haven't gotten back to it yet, like I said, there are many, many, many, many projects, especially the ones we all have. You can see, but yeah, and then here I have some little rabbit decorations in a little nest and then here, of course, we look, it was always a brightener of the day. I'll also mention that a few people mentioned it in the comments. from my last video how they think I should get a friend to peep but I thought for this one I'll just say it in the video instead of responding to so many comments about it the reason we don't have a friend to peep is because We have read that canaries like to be alone because they are territorial and competitive for the space they are in, which is why Peep is alone in his giant cage, but he gets a lot. of love and attention from us.
I sit here with him quite often and we check on him several times a day and he likes to be in front of these huge windows because he can see some of the birds outside, but he can also have his space all to himself, so yeah, that's right. as it is decorated right now, it is at the top of the stairs and then down the stairs to the entrance. This is a fun plant that my brother convinced me to buy. The last time we were shopping at Target together, he said he had one, but he forgot to water it a little bit and it dried out and died, but he said he had it for a long time and it bloomed really hard for a long time. time so I decided to buy one and honestly it has been blooming like crazy since I bought it.
I've just been removing the dead flower heads and watering it regularly to make sure it doesn't dry out, but it's been a It's kind of a happy, fun plant to have here on the staircase and I've got some Easter decorations here. I couldn't go out and you know, I picked out a lot of spring flowers for Easter this year, but I used what I had. around the house to make some cheerful arrangements just to brighten up some parts of the house. I made this last year and there is a video on my channel showing how I laid or decorated this paper egg, so it's a really fun project. and it's very easy actually so this is where this vanity piece is going to go for now and I think this is probably where it's going to stay so before it was kind of a cream color but it was missing paint and stains and it had some kind of color. of wooden hardware and decided to update it so I painted it this kind of warm grayish color and added some new hardware and also placed it on these little metal legs to give it a little more. of a sleek look and make it a little bit taller because it was kind of a very low dresser that I think used to have feet but at some point someone took them off because there were little holes to screw in. something under the corner so I think it must have had wheels or something before and now I guess it has Tootsie's on it again so it was a fun project that took a little time and I think it's a nice piece for the entryway. to store, you know, gloves, hats and various different things, although we have a closet under the stairs, it's just as good for the smaller things you want to store and I finally found this book.
This is not something It was new but I couldn't find it after we moved and I finally found it in a box in the basement but I thought it was really cool and the picture was there or it was just very neat so I decided to decorate with it . at the entrance and this is just some kind of flower bush that I put some burlap on. There's actually a very simple and quick video on my channel from last year that shows how I did it and then I just put together this little arrangement with some flowers. items I just had to add some happy spring color in the entryway and down here I just have a basket full of a bunch of old books so it's kind of sitting on the floor next to the dresser so even though it's just we'll be For the two of us for Easter, we'll do something a little more special for dinner or probably more like lunch that day because I think we were thinking about doing something like breakfasts, so I think our plan currently is to do We'll cook a ham that we already have in the freezer and we'll make some orange and cranberry muffins with a box and I think we'll probably make hash browns and scrambled eggs and fill it so it's like a It's kind of more of an Easter brunch style meal and my brother wants us to set up a video call with some members of our family and wants us all to coordinate the cooking, have dinner ready and ready at the same time and have a group video call with everyone. so we can all spend time together and I'm sure at some point during the day we will, but I think it's not decided yet if we'll start the video call while people are eating, but you know.
Look, that's something we're planning as far as being able to spend some time with the family at Easter is having group video calls which are actually pretty fun, so yeah, those are our Easter plans and I'm really excited to plant. In the season, I got some bulb things that I can't wait to get started on, so next time I thought I'd take you outside and show you some things in the garden, so I've been working on a lot of projects. Outside, including this area behind the garage, was full of some kind of leaves and dead branches and stuff, so I cleaned it up and added some of these bricks I found in the garden to turn it into a future flower bed. area and there has been quite a bit of pruning and branch clearing I have been doing around the garden since the winter.
I've just been cleaning up the garden and getting everything looking good for this summer, so that's where we are in the pile. I've had this little guy living, he comes out from time to time and he's not too afraid of us, he lives in the garage, actually, yeah, I think, so I'm a little nervous going in there because he doesn't. He looks like he's too scared of us, but he's cute, so yeah, we've been doing some big house projects outside, in fact, in the spring they replaced a lot of the wood in the trendy soffit areas because it was pretty rotted, they'll eventually paint it.
Same colors as before and the shingles will actually be replaced this spring. I didn't have many extra flowers because I couldn't quote buying spring flowers, but I used what I had to gather. some springy pots outside in sort of what I call the backyard area, there were three ponds when we moved in and one of them wasn't holding water and the other one wasn't in good condition either, so I took them out this spring and redid the landscaping so that, you know, fill in the holes and just clean things up and make it look nice and move some rocks around the Long Creek type pond in the back to make it look a little more natural, so stop by the yard I thought I would give you a little

tour

of the plants that are already sprouting in the spring and the spring bulbs that are sprouting that I planted last spring, but yeah, I hope you all have a wonderful spring and a great Easter.
