hayekwelcome to the show thanks so excited to be here and then i know you're a fan of valentina's hot sauce but how are you doing with
spicyfood in general? i'm ok with
spicyfood i'm mexican a mexican i've been on a break from alcohol and hot food for about three months so let's see if my tongue has forgotten you know what it's like and you know how dealing with the itch will do the test hmm oh it's good it's very good I'm a little nervous us because I had the impression like the first one it's not hot at all yeah but a little bit of a kick a little bit hot it's hot i i'm terrified how it's going to get but it's really good yeah and you go you come back you come back as we mentioned you play ajak and the undying the spiritual leader of an immortal team of superheroes and recently director chloe zhao told a story about you waiting for a production delay lost in your headph
oneslistening the Fromm's atmospheric Nils song says and it made me curious what role music plays in helping you get into a character like Ajax, like all characters.
It's very important in my life and it makes my job really fun because I make my own sheet music. for the character and it keeps me keeping the vibe and it really puts you in your own little micro universe where anything can happen and everything is enhanced like the trees the lights everything is so much more interesting with the music so I always use it it's not bad, it's not too sweet so there's an iconic instagram photo of you holding a stack of tacos and it's captioned the passion that never left me as someone who has lived and traveled the world is there a place outside of mexico you think does tacos The best thing you know I live in London now there is a place I go to with my daughter Valentina who loves it and it's called taqueria I mean the name is not very original but we love they make good tacos and I have a place called mestizo in London too they sell the tacos but you can buy all the mexican ingredients everything you need you can buy there to make the food at home so the best tacos outside of mexico any of my houses I like but maybe a little a little too salty well if sama says so then it's the truth so what do you remember about the mechanics of filming the tram accident scene in frida for my money? one of the best scenes in movies oh that's good it was very complicated actually it's one of the few times there was a lot of dialogue about it and we should try this we should try that because julie taymor is amazing she knows exactly what she wants she is very technical she is very visual it's very good i love it because she said she painted her reality but her reality was so poetic in so many ways because that's the way she chose to see it and i think this is the perfect scene that says a lot about her spirit and the way she who saw things, where is one of the most tragic moments of it. life and yet it was so beautiful, you know, and it happened that there was a painter in the cart that had some gold dust and then there was the blood there was a stain there was the blood but there was the gold it's just uh there was something magical about this really painful moment in her life that marked her forever and then in 2014 you produced an animated movie the prophet based on the classic book by cleo gabron yeah yeah what's so special about that project that makes it one of the few movies you've done and what would you like to see again oh my god i was romantically attached to the book because of my grandfather who was lebanese and kept the book by his bed when i grew up i read that book many times different times and i still see it from a different way and in a way every time i find something new to learn from him i feel like he is like my grandfather that even though he is not here with me he is still teaching me about life through this amazing poet us hot lost the hot
onesvery appropriate for the show is that well is that good oh yeah we'll stick with that so in addition to your 80+ acting credits you've also made your mark behind the camera by founding your production company ventanarosa in 1999 and you I've heard some incisive things about the daunting and harrowing process of buying scripts when you find out about a script that's locked away in a drawer in a production studio somewhere, how did it get there and what's keeping that movie from getting there?
What is earned many times is money. You have a great concept that everyone likes, but you have to have writers write it, and sometimes the writers aren't doing exactly what the director or the studio expects, but you have to pay them, so here. another writer comes along and sometimes you have to buy the biography, book rights and then you don't have them after a certain time so you have to pay again and a lot of times you just get a big bill and the movie hasn't started and it becomes very It's hard to do and it's sad because things are changing now, but in the past, if you had a script that was a great script about a minority, it wasn't done because there weren't enough minorities that could open a movie according to the studios you know, no. it's big enough the name and if the script is expensive you have to have one of the ali which is a very limited number of actors and usually not minorities so things are starting to change. but there were a lot of great stories that because they weren't easy to pick just because the big stars weren't that kind of diverse they died hopefully they'll come back now it's spicy yeah a little step up like four steps up yeah it's ok but you know what i'm impressed i'll take that i'll take the eyes are watery a little ok that's your tail oh i like this but you're not you're not pink in the face yet not yet not yet get there i think i'm waiting because you know what i had a theory i was wondering if you give me this and then just have some bbq sauce ok ok you know in y'all so i was going to say ok let's change the wing maybe we'll do that next time ok ok i agree ok with that i'm fine with that i'm going to change suspicious sure sure i'm totally fine i'm a chicken wing talk show host the dignity you are you actually are yes ok sama , we have a recurring segment on our show called explain that gram where to do a dive on our instagram guest pull out interesting photos that need more context so we'll put the photo up on the monitor and given your love of animals it's a wildlife theme for
hayek, do you have some 101 truffle hunting tips that you have chosen?
Up this afternoon that you spent with Zara and I'll tell you a funny anecdote so we went looking for the truffles and the guide was a fan and he told me look, I love you so much I can't lie. You're fine, the truth is that we don't know if we're going to find truffles or not, and we don't want to disappoint tourists, so sometimes we hide them, but you, I was in love with dogs, but what? we're going to do now we're going to do we're going to do it differently one of you goes and hides them and we're going to wait here and then I'll show you how the dogs find it but my girls were naughty I mean they hit those things in the trees under the water i mean they really were so bad to the dogs and we couldn't find them that's why b but the dogs found them they finally found them i love truffles i have to admit they are the best one more for you you are the first person i ever interviewed with a owl as a pet can you give me a pro and con of having an owl as a pet if its a hot night you can sleep with it and they are like flying all night you know and you can feel the air as they fly by she is lovely funny temperamental you know she can being Moody and I love that about her too.
Her eyes are hypnotic and really calm me down. What I do not like. They have to eat the rats. That's what I feed them. it's just not a good feeling that's not fresh lettuce that's lettuce mr lettuce oh i like this one has a little bit of cinnamon oh yes you can try it mm-hmm yes this is different it's very nice it's sauce it's spicy but it's very good i like it , so there's a quote from you that was really interesting where you said p Producing is hell Writing is frustrating Acting is really satisfying Directing is heaven and in journalism writers often become editors because it's a clearer race to greater stability and money, but that's not necessarily the case with front-line actors who become directors.
How do you explain the drawing, I think that for me what my drawing would be is that sometimes you have a story to tell and I don't want the limitation of my body and who I am to only tell a character in someone else's story, but rather to tell the perspective of a story where you have a special perspective on something like your brain is wired in such a way that the way you can tell it is not so much with words but with moods and the little moments, the details that you want to feel, you know you want to feel the light, you want to be able to put music to it and work with the actors and you know maybe you're connecting that way or you have that desire to direct because I can see you pay a lot of attention to detail and but you would have wanted to do it even if you had done a different race.
I think it's a way to connect having that perspective and an interesting visual way to do it. For example I'm very dyslexic so my brain instead of reading words to capture images and that's a good thing if you wanted to be a fire director ok whatever that means a bigger kick but you're doing good , I like this one, wow, this would taste good, do you mind if I put a little? lemon inside go ahead that's why it's a little salty too there we go mmm I really like this one I like this one you have to remember that in Mexico one grows up with sweets like when you are a child you must be as hot as number three it's sweet but it's full from chili there are a lot of spicy sweets the kids eat so you get used to it there we go I like it I learned all kinds of things today one of your passions that I know that you pursue in your free time is diving which you have been doing since you were 10 years old besides that that time you had to be transported to a decompression chamber for eight hours after all deep voyage have you ever had a heartbreaking encounter with a sea creature or something i've had so many encounters with sea creatures and they come i got a good vibe i got a good vibe yes i had an octopus once exploring me was very interesting i stay very still but it gets dark but at first there was some light coming in there and just to see its tentacles through attached to what you have to hold the respirator because they can take it off and he was moving the mask and spinning me still very calm very still and he explored me and left i was weird just because their texture and everything about them is so interesting here It's me breaking the fourth wall here and just being your friend, you're crushing it, you're doing great, but this is going to kill me, as long as I don't get diarrhea, no problem, I have a movie to promote.
And if it does, I'm going to send you to the Mexican mafia. Okay, okay, okay, I'll take my fingers, this is very hot, I'm not good, oh my god, I'm playing an eternal, but my tongue is still human. Do you remember? I mean it's a tricky fucker because even at first it's not that hot and as time goes by it gets bigger and bigger and bigger, yeah it doesn't seem to stop or slow down. That you remember? about
eatingthe heart of a sea dragon in your storybook movie it was more or less disgusting than the wing we just ate you didn't hurt that one it was disgusting oh my tongue is hurting too much pain for too little pleasure oh my god that should be the catchphrase i'm going back to the beginning yes it's like cleaning now taking my my doritos with it's terrible i'm not going to answer any more questions for you my tongue hurts we will Slow down we'll slow it down my question was a disgusting question , sure, but it's an open You really like something a lot.
Have you ever had someone get a runny nose in the middle of the show? great you're doing great i've seen it all here i've seen it all from the table side oh god no i like you what makes little japanese restaurant oh yeah in boston one of the places most inspiring you've ever eaten creativity there we go they are so original the taste is so good and the fish is so good but they have some really special dishes that i love oh my god it's still on fire do you want to slow down do you want to move on to the next one do you want me to this taste coming out of my mouth alright alright alright i'm about to start crying let's take this this is going to be even harder i guess there's only one way to find out there's only one way to know it's really hotat least it tastes good the other one is like a tongue attack you know and you don't even get to feel any taste it just paints no no no no no like a bad lover it's the first time I've heard the sauce I've heard this sauce described in so many ways the first time i heard her described that way i'm no good but i like the other one the other one is hot but it's a different kind of heart it's not like i'm going to make a sauce that people want to pull some pranks on their friends you know joke sauce joke sauce or to attack or just to say oh I'm macho macho I can eat these sauces no this is what and what is the name of the one I just tried how is the bomb like your dog is about to melt yeah that's not a good thing oh ok earlier this year you starred in bliss which is a science fiction movie that struggles with the idea of artificially simulated worlds and then one of frida kahlo's most famous paintings of the two Fridas have some Parallel universe qualities.
Do you think Frido would have embraced a connection between art and string theory? She would have loved it. It's part of what you can see in her art. It's very interesting. It's a very interesting question, she was able to paint in one painting many aspects of her reality that maybe no one else saw reality that way, but she felt it very real, so I think I think she would have been fascinated with string theory and different dimensions different chances of existing at the same time and that's the worst it's an insult to the tongue the way you do it is you don't want to rub it on the wing rub it next to it yeah you know what you'd think of this period I figured that out but you know a million times you pour the sauce all over the wing but you're right that's the smart way to do it because you never know what it will be like especially when they are thick. sometimes it just comes out too much it's someone who's been around hot sauce a long time before ok salma hayek in full length. you're not you're an honorary mexican as of today you really can handle your chiles such a big compliment coming from you salma hayek and you know what we've finally conquered the
wingsof death and just one more annoying question and prolonged before. we rolled credits you know your origin story of leaving telenovelas in mexico for a shot in hollywood is well known but one thing i found interesting was a revelation you had when you said my passion was not acting but cinema you can unpack what did you want say with that
whileyour brain and tongue slowly roast in hot sauce because you know if you ask me who did you want to be like what was your favorite actor did you want to be who was your icon who didn't have one I just want to be part of the movies I just wanted to be in the movies and when they asked me what was the movie that made you want to be an actress, I would say willy wonka and the chocolate factory because when I was a kid I was watching it and I thought it was amazing I said wait a minute wow there is a universe where everything is possible and you can live in another era in the past or in the future and you know you can have a river made of chocolate everything is possible and that's movies everything is possible ble to talk about realities and string theory back to that so i just wanna be a part of it and it's been so much fun beautifully said glam crushing the wings of death today and look at you salma hayek coming in the hot ones knocking down the wings of death living to tell and now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet i wish my husband was here so i could kiss him and then he'll be he'll be on fire i don't even know why but in the meantime Somehow this camera, this camera or this camera, let people know what's going on in your life.
I have a movie coming out called Eterns with a bunch of amazing people and the best director in the world. I am very proud to be a part. this project you have to come and see and then i have a small but really fun part in another movie later this year with lady gaga called house of gucci so i was going to be a good ridley scott directing so i was really excited to work with such directors well come and check them out you did great i had a great time but also the questions were very clever oh thanks i appreciate how many believe it or not we have done it i think i have done this like 230 times.
You are in season 16, but you do it once a week. a lot of work yeah yeah but you know what huh I love I love doing that I love watching your movies and I like immersing myself in your life no you can't say you really like movies but sometimes they're not just the movies you have to do yeah but that's the variation though I like to walk around in someone else's shoes like to see what it's like to experience their art listen to their music read their books watch their movies what whatever and then sit with them and then see if you can execute against it but that's my favorite part of my job and who's the worst you've ever interviewed off camera hey what's going on fans this is
