Scare at Sugarloaf: Chairlift Snaps
May 03, 2023three children were among the injured, luckily none of the injuries appear to be life threatening, but the big question this morning is whether the cause was gusty wind or mechanical issues this morning. Two state investigators are on the scene to try to find out. what sent those skiers crashing down the slopes became a triage center they all just fell off i just held something like this over mom but somehow my mom slipped under the bar the mountainside filled up of downed skiers who plummeted through the air my wife daughter and immediately went down in sight helping them remove the chairs of the people who were well above a hundred and fifty more skiers stranded in the broken lift for over an hour waiting to be rescued broken lift cables hanging overhead a pulley system finally got them to safety we looked down and there were some skiers who were skiing and they saw the chair bounce too and they stopped and looked up the hill and everyone they were like oh my god oh my god it was pretty scary because I didn't want to I mean, we were there for a long time so we didn't want anything else to happen.
It was around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when the east spillway
chairlift
broke the rope that derailed the tower and five chairs crashed 30 feet into the ground by witnesses. Let's say a worker appeared to be repairing the elevator tower at the time of the accident. We asked a resort spokesperson if there was a worker on the pole at the time. I don't know, investigators are also looking at wind as a possible cause, there were 40 mph gusts at the time; in fact, the elevator had been closed earlier that day due to high winds, but it reopened just half an hour before the accident the resort had in In fact they admitted in the past that that elevator was vulnerable to wind and that they wanted to replace it was their first priority under a new improvement plan.In fact, they were hoping to replace the 35-year-old lift at the end of this season.
