Samsung Galaxy Buds - Better AND Cheaper?

When I was a kid, whether I had a Walkman, an iPod, or an Android smartphone, if I had a pair of headphones and a three and a half millimeter jack, I could always count on things to work. You know it's a good connector and nothing has. I appreciate it more than reviewing bluetooth headphones. Now the Galaxy Buds aren't Samsung's first foray into the world of true wireless ear

Samsung took what they learned from the iconx and made a more refined product with more universal appeal In short, they removed internal storage added a wireless charging case improved battery life added support for Bluetooth 5.0 and lowered the price to undercut competitors like Apple's airpods and Google's Pixel Buds, but all of that would be for nothing if they kept that annoying one Samsung limitation, luckily they didn't, the Galaxy Buds should work with any Android or iOS device, although they still work best with the from Samsung.

More on that later, let's take a look at them first. Samsung seems to have taken a lot of design cues from the Iconx to the rounded triangular touchpad and, like all decent headphones, they include three sizes of rubber ear tips and three sizes of wing tips to make sure they stay in your ears. It's just one of those things that makes you go, huh. Something else that is good is the audio quality. Samsung is clearly leveraging its 2016 Harman acquisition compared to Airpods. Which, to be clear, is fine for most people, the Galaxy Buds can produce a delicious amount of bass along with full-bodied mids and balanced highs. However, part of this superior performance is just the fact that you can customize your Galaxy Buds to properly seal in your ear canal; in comparison, AirPods don't fit very well and therefore let in a lot of ambient sound. That said, there's a clear safety advantage to being able to hear the world around you, luckily if you like that. that the headphones have an ambient sound mode similar to the one we first saw here from Doppler Labs.

Basically, they use their two external microphones to record the noise around you and pass it through the speakers that are right in the holes in your ears. Overall, we found that it didn't interfere too much with the quality of the music and it was helpful, especially in an office environment, to know if someone is shouting your name from across the room. Now let's move on to the app, it is not available for iOS which is a problem but for others. Other than that, it's great, it actually has some great features so you can adjust your equalizer.

We liked the dynamic and clear presets. You can update your firmware without any voodoo magic, you just press a button called update firmware like any other tech product. Thanks Samsung. I didn't think this had to be a good thing, but there you go, and this is really cool. In fact, you can see your friend's battery level and locate him by playing a high-pitched chirp. It's almost like Samsung doesn't give a damn. you lose them and he wants to help you cool down. Also from there you can customize some of the touch gestures of the buttons. You can't change single tap to pause or play and that's on both sides, double tap to skip a track or triple tap to go. to the previous track, but you can assign the long press action to activate the voice assistant of your choice.

It even works with Alexa. Increase or decrease the volume or turn ambient sound on or off. Now the long press action of each earbud is independent of the other so you can set them to do different things, unless you want to use them to control the volume, in which case the right earbud should turn up the volume while the left should turn down the volume, since with airpods you can turn the volume down or to a specific level. percentage with your voice, just be careful because the buttons don't have voice activation yet, so if your phone's microphone can't hear you, you'll have to summon Cortana manually with a long press.

Overall, our experience with the Galaxy Buds has been incredibly sweet, but there are a few flies in this mostly happy ointment - just like the Airpods and Apple devices, the Galaxy Buds work best with Samsung devices and while that kind of phrase can often be taken as just marketing, I mean of course Samsung wants you to buy all Samsung products. It is really true. Here the Galaxy Wearable app is pre-installed on Samsung phones, allowing you to pair instantly by opening the case, while other Android phone users will need to install the app and as we mentioned before, iPhone users cannot get it at all , so they can't even customize their gestures and although the latency is close to zero with a

s10, it is very noticeable on the pixel 3 and even more so on the iphone 10r.

We used it and the thing is, while we didn't experience any glitches while listening on the iPhone or s10, our music tended to crash much more frequently on the Pixel 3, especially when we were walking around with the headphones in our ears and then with the Pixel. 3 in a front pocket, another big negative and this was true on all devices was the call quality is now decent in a quiet environment if I was trying to talk to you in our studio here it would be fine but if outside or in a crowded room, good luck having a coherent conversation, so no matter how advanced bluetooth headphones are with their gesture controls and advanced features, it's the little problems like this that always make me long for the simplicity of a headphone jack.
