this time on the drugs kill the race

again

at least for the next 30 seconds or so so ah the rotson this is our 1971 datsun 240z that is

roadkill

's favorite turbocharged rust bucket for the last five years or so we've had a love hate relationship with the car finnegan loves it and i hate it i mean don't get me wrong it's awesome and all but it's also so hacked up and so rusty but my biggest complaint is it never stops fail us every time I get excited. it breaks my heart the first time was in

episode

25 when the chevy power 240z v6 was our pick to win our shootout but it broke on us and then we added a junkyard turbo and got kicked out of an autocross due to excessive amount of smoke because of a lubrication problem with the turbocharger and then we beat it up

st a new Subaru in a shootout until it overheated on the way to the final event, but then we rescued it and it let us down again at Willow Springs International Speedway where we were going to race the dredge with randy pope oh thats bad but instead of giving it up we decided to fix the engine in a cage and race the lemons 24 hours everything was going great except for a lot of problems, such as dropping flush valves due to electrical problems.

The transmission died and eventually the engine died completely so we finally retired that Chevy V6 and replaced it with a Ford 5.0 V8 from a Fox Body Mustang. from the engine bay and all was great until we tried to drag race the crusher impala and the rear end thought all our new power was pure evil and spit the half shafts into oblivion now after years of disappointing us and years of negligence we are giving the rotson yet another chance to crush our dreams and break our funds. Two years have passed since I paid attention to this. I'm so excited to be here.

roadkill s9 ep103 full episode rotsun lives again motortrend...

This is a legend. Look at me. it sucks so much it makes me so happy gosh how cool is this part yeah oh this is magic but nothing seems to spark yeah nothing seems to work like i see a wire harness mid drive diff and nothing anymore It's hooked up yeah this was a running car when I broke something in the rear at the race track two years ago and after that luckily he took it apart for us and I thought the transmission was busted but it wasn't . t and it was the rear and it hasn't oh after that it went to the sema show that's how it is people kept their backpacks inside i really don't know where to start because we are about to work with all new pieces that we have never installed as if we were to take out the t5 and put a six speed.
roadkill s9 ep103 full episode rotsun lives again motortrend
We have some parts on eBay for a rear diff that we have never installed and I don't know if it works. just start here and work your way back like get a trans then get a diff and ok ow tran swap first thing sure ok let's put it in the air there's no good place to go except the floor that's rusty and i think this is the part where we jack the car up and dig the floor in whoa the rear end is bouncing ah it seems so much safer wow as i look at the soft underside of the rodson i am reminded of just how awful this car really is I can't even believe we had anything to weld to when they put the roll cage in here the rust here on this frame rail is epic and the patchwork of sheet metal and junk is pretty bad but we're going to make it faster anyway it looks like which we will have to start by removing the original t5 transmission bell housing that is what we have always had on this one a t5 is a brittle light glass it cannot handle this kind of power we are going to install a t56 which It will have a different bell housing and clutch but I think we'll also need to make some room here in the tunnel so it's going to be more hack work and I'm off the hook Talking about what we're going to do for a transmission crossmember because there's nothing to attach it to down here so that'll be one thing and then in the back I remember there's currently no diff on this car at all so we're going to have to fix that we're going to remove as well these half-axles that have that funky adapter bolted into the center diff and that's what we were welding together at Tucson Dragway last time we had this thing happened when we were in a drag race against the crusher I guess that will be removed, so i think our starting point is to start taking the hood housing apart and then try to bolt the new one on and figure out our clearance for our t56 t5 hood the housing came out or else this is the intermediate plate for the new hood housing once again time to put some very shiny parts on a rusty old car this steering wheel and our transmission kit come from silversport transmissions a company that specializes in retrofitting five and manua l speed gearboxes for any old car now they don't have a specific kit for our rusty old datsun 240z but they do have enough universal parts so we can take out our old t5 manual gearbox and put a tremec magnum t-56 six speed in there it's going to be awesome so that doesn't feel good here we go that feels great oh that feels amazing oh it's really good do you need a moment alone flyer i'm going to go call my wife now so this is a tremec t-56 magnum six speed gearbox awesome trans you'll find on a lot of late model cars you'll also find it retrofitted on a lot of older muscle cars by companies like silversport transmissions are modular you are going to have six speeds fourth is one to one fifth is overdrive which on this transmission is 0.80 to one and sixth is double overdrive which is the point six, three to one. gear we want and still cruise down the road comfortably and more importantly the derailleur mounting point is way back here so our shifter will no longer be under our dash like it was with that t5 , that's probably my favorite part of this whole thing, it's no longer pushing up to go into first gear, we'll actually be able to push forward like a normal car, so the next thing we should do is simulate the hood of the car and use a dial indicator to check the concentricity of the center line of the engine crankshaft with the hole in the back of the bell housing so that the clutch and transmission are perfectly aligned with the engine, but guess what? it's not going to happen because we don't have offset pins to adjust it when it's wrong anyway so we're going to kill it and just hit together it's wrong to do it if we don't or it's perfectly aligned you may have trouble being able to shift banks so we'll see what happens but right now we're just going to slam it shut with this clutch which by the silversport way uses a chevy pattern flywheel just to simplify installation , so they only have to stock chevy type clutches so here I am installing the chevy clutch on the small block ford on the datsun we wanted to lift the transmission here just to see if it would clear the floor pans and tunnel and all of that stuff and we hadn't even messed with the throttle bearing, from this point on the transmission fits so well we actually start working on the scrap bearing and we're shoving it in there until we realize that this hickey in the transmission case is hitting this bulge in the car body and because we don't want to damage the pristine sheet metal in the rots and we're going to se go ahead and just cut this thing straight off the transmission case to make the slack settle there we go we're good ok hurry up no just drop it you're good we've broken almost everything on the Rodson's powertrain throughout the years.
roadkill s9 ep103 full episode rotsun lives again motortrend
T5 transmission twice. We broke our diff, we broke our half shafts, I mean we've destroyed everything thanks to our Ford Power Stroke turbo diesel power plant and once again spending too much money on parts the car doesn't deserve and us. we're gonna throw 1200 bucks worth of ebay stuff on a pallet on the rear suspension and powertrain and then we're gonna throw another three thousand bucks was the polished and powder coated billet parts to make it fit that rusty car of yours looking at is the complete rear suspension and diff and brake systems of a 1990 to 1996 nissan 300zx biturbo car what does that mean we now have a bigger diff this is a r230 this is bigger than a 49 inch sprocket We'll get 369 gears, a viscous limited slip, 28 splined shaft and CV joints, five lug conversion giving us a lot more options for wheels and tires on the rear of the car now and all that billet goodness will do this. fit that car and ultimately it will be much more reliable than it used to be for r200 this was the one we pulled off ebay of a subaru wrx sti 8 inch ring gear really not bad limited slip thats a difference pretty good one that bolts right onto a datsun 240. this is a r230 that has a larger 905 ring gear than a ford's 9 inches larger diameter 28 spline shafts and is less likely to twist in the middle like that one you looked at here this side look tour it's great this side not so much if not so much huh yeah i hope this doesn't happen with this i have more faith in it here's a list of everything we're about to replace all this goes to disappear, the only thing we're hiding here is bottom stock control. arms we're going to get rid of our struts our disc brakes the half axle all of that stuff is going to come out as soon as I get this ridiculously long control arm bolt out so what I'm going to do is make an adapter to go from the slide hammer to this bolt so i can sit here a and play it i won't be beat here it goes wow it's become official now we are ready to have 300 zx parts in the rots and we have the aftermarket whisker bar attached to the diff and now we're ready to load it all into the vehicle, it's hitting something on the floor, yes it's there, on the floor of the car, yes we ran into a lot of trouble getting this to fit, we're not sure why yet, but it looks like the diff is hitting the floor of the car before the bracket goes all the way up and then there are also these drop down brackets that need to fit on each side of the diff and mount to the control arms and It doesn't fit in between those so we're in the tamper stage right now, oh I just cut a brake line, yeah oh what a pain, it will leak forever.
Nothing like adding work time. about the middle of both four and a half and up and down to try and make room for this diff i love to weld right next to a fuel cell oh yeah this is the half shaft from the rear of the car i think drivers side and we're rebuilding it with the stock 300 zx outer and inner cv joints but with brand new shorter custom shafts right there and what a dummy is this we're almost ready to put it all together and we can't finish the job because the stupid rubber boot doesn't fit properly over the CV axle housing the way they work. it's just that there's a lot of grease and ball bearings and races and stuff in there and if sand or dirt builds up it all blocks up and destroys itself so you really need the boot to stay in there this is stopping everything we want to do today , this is the mounting point for the front control arm it goes right there except the flange on the front of our new r230 diff hits it it won't continue there we can't mount our control arms so I'm just going to borrow some hot rod garage stuff this is the driveshaft from one of their project cars they left it lying around they clearly don't need it so I'm going to cut it out and weld its driveshaft onto our crossmember so our chef of driving have room to be awesome thank you tony thank you luck and that's how you steal oops i mean use garage hot rod parts to fix a

roadkill

project car remember how we were working so hard last night in the meetings CVs, well we finally gave up because the CV boots we had were completely wrong. so mike called the guys that have the company that does this whole rear suspension thing and they're going to send us some complete half shafts and everything so in the morning we can put that together and that'll be pending We got up from the complete install of all of this but once I get that hub cleaned up so you can get the bolt through there we're going to hang the axle here and then those 300 zx brakes are supposed to go on this and then of course the new coilovers and then the rea The suspension is done, but we also realized that the entire rear half of the car needs to be serviced for the brakes because the calipers are not going to work with the hoses we have or the hard lines we have. just keep adding more and more stuff ok there you go like everything on this car the diff is half mounted thetransmission is half assembled i need to be

full

y assembled by tomorrow when our driveshaft shows up and now i'm going to have to fabricate a transmission crossmember because obviously there is no kit to put a five liter ford tremec t56 in a rusty car , so i'll probably bolt this right into the rust oh it'll just go on the rusty floor yeah ok i won't give you a fender. washer but another fender washer to put on top to sandwich the rusty sheet metal is pretty good yes i care today is the day it all comes together yes this is our last day we are out of time oh so it has it has which uh so let's recap here all the things were what we do is make the car more reliable.
It is currently broken. Here is our original setup. Now keep in mind that this is an upgrade to the stock 240z stuff. I don't remember when we did this, but we converted our stock 240 stuff to aftermarket half-axles. it's 25mm which is hard for me to say because i don't know if it is because it's euro which is weird and you'll notice the axle knuckle that should be on the diff is broken here okay so that's not good . i'm getting rid of that never mind the fact that there are two adapters on each end here to convert this all to cv because the factory stuff is a universal joint and all these bolts fall apart all the time we could never keep them together like this which we then call tech toys tuning they say get 300 zx turbo car stuff out of a 90 to 96 nissan car we do that so this is a stock 300 zx half axle which is too long for our application on the 240z the track width is too long Oh ok tech toys tuning sent us axles that are shorter and stronger but while riding it as Dave pointed out we found our boot wouldn't fit over the cv casing and yes it's just a boot, we could probably hold it down with a hose, but if it comes loose and dirt gets in. the balls will be legitimately locked in the back of the car. the guys at tech toys sent us overnight to complete the shortened aftermarket 300 zx shafts with the boots already installed ready to go on the car and we also got our new driveshaft this morning so we are ready to go again assemble the back of the car and find out Does the engine run?
It will all come together now in minutes yeah ok I hope I said all that right I think it sounded like you did and the adventure continues. and a cv boot issue that wouldn't work both are too long and even though they look like they are together we can't actually get the hub and brake in because the cv sticks out of the face of the spindle so now this all has to come apart again but at least we have a solution the driver side which is the shorter side of this deal will be swapped to the passenger side the passenger side axle will come back out I will take it apart and use our original aftermarket axles that are shorter to rebuild it and I'll put it here and then hope

y maybe at the end of the day we'll get breaks on this and maybe even rear tires I think we're supposed to be on a track tomorrow that's probably not going to happen right now i'll settle for doing a burnout even if it's right here in the elevator i don't care anymore i just want to hear the car run bam uh-oh what do you mean uh oh there isn't uh oh it's still too long if this doesn't fit can we just pretend this was all a joke? and go home you know what we did before we killed on the highway with the crusher camaro we had a center blocker and a rear end and we couldn't get an axle to go in we changed the stub at Westec yeah and I cut the end of the axis. off yes you did there is not enough spline depth on this when this thing is fully installed it uses 100 of the spline but this end might be what you are trying to say if this shaft is too long too that's the joke that i'll cut and sleep it'll be like old times 'cause we did that on the watson before i'll cut the shaft in the middle set it up i was walled off we've done it before i'll say nice things about it As I do it, I just want to get out of the store, okay, not even in the store, burn in the elevator, burn in the elevator, that's all I need in my life right now to make this worth it. mad it's a nice car just to be clear we have six different half axles here and they're all wrong huh it's killing me we spent the night crying and laughing at this ridiculous problem with all these axles we're trying to fit it's just A mess of aftermarket and custom parts, but we found a guy on social media who probably had a combination of things that was going to solve our problem so we headed south on a short road trip to check it out.
I brought everything I think we need to take it apart and I don't think it's fully assembled anyway so we should be able to head back. I'm thinking three or four hours. what exactly do we need to get the control arms we have in stock because when we ordered the kit they were out of their control arms well their control arms are adjustable up to an inch and a half almost two inches so you can go up the track width which is what we need with our axles our axles are too long yes with the longer arms that will space out the stud then we should be fine no more shortening and re-rotating the axles like we should be in good shape with this man, hopefully this is good. we are in palos verdes california had a nice ride up here in my old 67 c10 and we are visiting joe who is a roadkill fanatic he has been to many of our events and has a 71 240z with the same aftermarket rear suspension props and fin science doubt that the lower control arms have adjustable heims on them so we can extend it which will solve our problem with having too long an axle so this is going to be great let's gut this car guy and leave him with a shell that won't roll no more Roadkill perfect What are we taking here?
Just these control arms unless you need something else. All we're going to do is unscrew the inside and drop the coil. coils disabled, yes the plan here is to take the coil off the top, the control arm off the bottom, disconnect the brake line and bring the whole unit back to our shop so we can use our slide hammer attachment cool to get the bottom. spin done this feels good the guy was cool I can't believe you let us take his car apart what we're looking for is aftermarket control arm no shorter than stock it needs to be longer these days it's an eighth shorter, so the heim joints need to be threaded tight. wait a minute oh man ok I can't even see the end of that heim that's not going to work I'm not aware of tubular control arm being shorter than stock control arm no longer and no there is just enough fit in these heim joints to make it two inches longer than it needs to be, dear joe, thanks for being a roadkill fanatic. and letting us take your car apart we appreciate it but it was no use we set everything on fire yeah they're shorter they're not longer and they're shorter dude that's the story of our debacle of the last three four days.
We had three sets of axles that were the wrong length so we can't put the rear suspension together, so we did the Hail Mary with that super cool Joe guy and gutted his car right in his driveway. I came back here and realized that the control arms were completely wrong. the solution is now Friday at 6 p.m. there's nothing we can do to fix the rear axle next week we're going to have to figure out a way to do some axles or something we've got like three different schematics in place with different people to figure out how to fix it so what we go to do now is drop the car and start worrying about other things.
I have connected the fuel system. I've engaged the transmission's reverse lockout. doohickey and now we have to deal with the hydraulics of the clutch which I'm going to do above and the shifter and some other stuff so here we are going to drop the car and finally drop the stupid irs which I never want to touch again like while cheers this will be a piece of sheet metal that covers the huge hole left in the transmission tunnel that was left over from I don't know the two previous transmissions that used to be there. Here is the shifter.
I will high five Freiburger. He will probably cry because something is being done. Yeah, the halcyon days are here again, so I think it's ready to light up. ok it works it's just how i remembered it so horrible i love it that's a win we've gotten as far as we can so now we have to take a week off and go film other shows and stuff and then we have to come back and make this work in time to get it to the weeknight show in las vegas and we'll have axels by then all those things fix one a bunch of them yeah yeah what could possibly go wrong ah i feel so much more relaxed now you know why it's two weeks after and in between two weeks there's been all sorts of relaxing stuff like we filmed a full

episode

of Roadkill Garage, a full episode of Fast with Finnegan, a full episode of Junkyard Gold and four episodes of Engine Masters and now we're back here with the rotson, do you know how many? axles we ended up going through to find the right ones for the nine independent rear suspension, yes nine axles was the key number and since we were doing other things we were lucky to bolt it on for ourselves, it made the brakes work too.
Grind the caliper here to work with the wheel. Put a small wheel spacer. it needs like a passenger seat and we need to figure out why that turbo is smoking so much we have a real lubrication problem in there of some sort and then once we fix it we'll hit the road to the sema show and we might even do It's there but I doubt it t The thing is crap it really is we need to figure out why this thing is smoking so much and Finn wants to make a new exhaust because it just blows the windshield blows the windshield on my side although you're good with that when we go to a dollar 60 supposedly on the highway today you thelma and louise oh no this is yours you can't have oil you know on our peripherals yeah I wonder if you got the drain on the pressure and the pressure in the drain that is possible the only way to tell is to remove the lines take the plate out then look and see which hole is bigger because the bigger hole will be the right of return and i can't remember which one it is what l when i did that thing and that was four years ago 11 16 i'll fix the exhaust if you fix that so let's talk about the hate pipe story on the watson right when we first built this car the turbo was mounted a lot lower on the car on the right and it had the first hate pipe with a tractor flapper valve on it and it came out of the hood right around here and it was kind of low profile and then when our heads fell apart because they were built with really cheap thin walled tubes we moved everything here and built the number two hate tube that came straight and was taller and had a fin right here and then fryeburg i think you took this engine to the right engine masters and it was lighting up the roof of this land on fire was lighting the dinosaur on fire so in tech performance west this was cut off and moved sideways a bit and it's been sitting like that ever since and none of us are In love with how it looks but right now due to the lubrication issue with the turbo it's throwing oil all over the windshield. so if we can fix the grease nicely but it still looks weird so i think we should cut it and at least straighten it out and put another fin on it.
Yes, you need a fin, but here's breaking news. It's not like us ok so our problem is the oil drain line needs to go back down to the pan right now it goes to the valve cover and goes through a scavenge pump which is pumping the oil, but it is still too high. so i think we will need to weld a fitting on the oil pan run the hose over there gravity should do its job hopefully less pipe hating smoke 2019 done dont know why this makes me so happy it's going to obstruct my vision it's going to be loud people are going to look oh yeah that's why i like it people are going to look oh we're screwed i can't move it back because the hood i can't move it down that's why oh no this is the oil drain for our turbo this needs to go into our oil pan we can't get the oil pan out of the car so our options here are limited we can't weld our fitting on there like we wanted so now we're going to use not exactly a bulkhead accessory but we are going to make it a bulkhead accessory we are going to drill ahole we're going to push the fit in there put a nut that just fits the back of the fitting on the inside and then silicone the whole thing a lot and I'm sure it won't fall apart for the duration of this road trip okay we've already finished.
We need to move on to throwing a seat in the car, oh, and find out if that even fixed the oil leak. a race car now forgot how to start it that was my fault we got oil pressure it's fixed look at that oh ignore that part i think it's good enough for who it is we're all good except for the actual wet oil coming out of the pipe i'm sure that it's a residual residue and it's going to be a lot higher than it was before that's going to end up in the prius behind us I'm good I'm good so I guess all we have left to do is throw the passenger seat in this thing and you know give a quick quick quick detail you know before the sema show so we're outta here oh the headlights might work i see something's up here we go we're doing it rotten loops new trans new end new clutch no smoke yet man this thing drives good rides good dude too bad it's Pure rubbish I think we'll be there at midnight we park this thing like g's I bet it's all black I smell so much burnt we got a lot of oil in there top What is that squeaky thing now?
You got me worried about the rear wheel falling off. Who put it back? I put the wheel back on but remember the whole clip thing what a clip oh oh oh you convinced me it was ok that was before we drove. It's not really going very fast so if it crashes we'll be fine, yeah if it doesn't crash it's still Robson? there yeah this car is still totally offensive i think thats what i love about him he just died yeah at least we got a shoulder yeah rodson is great again oh except for the death in the part from the freeway, david freiburger, here coming at you from the side of the freeway where rodson has once again failed, mike finnegan, what's going on in this situation? well i'm having the time of my life david because as you know the highway shoulder is where i like to spend all my time so that's a summary of rotten once again failing us real we have Than get a battery. i know the first time the rats failed us the battery fell in the head and stopped our day yeah so we built this battery hold down bracket that is currently in our way now the question is did the battery fail or not. we dont have a charging system i would say both yes we dont have a charging system ok this will get us off the road at least ok though it says cut but wont cut these are the worst crimpers in the world and yet I'm going to use them to fix our ry battery charging problem and it's dead because the alternator isn't charging it and the alternator isn't charging it because we had a little little wire powering this thing and it broke in half and i'll fix it with this wire that's the wrong color and the wrong size if i could find something to cut it oh wait here we go ok so i'll use the pliers to cut the wire and then i'll use the wire cutters so i don't cut the wire it doesn't even it's a good wire stripper also not ok if you look at these just throw them away they're useless but these won't cramp.
I guess the pump is the weird thing is it doesn't show any voltage but when I unplug it we get oil out of the exhaust like that's feeding the scavenge pump or something weird yeah the whole problem was the wire wasn't going to work. nothing so there was no voltage to drive th the alternator, but I think if you turn it on now I think we're going to see 13 volts right here go ahead rabbit that's ok. barra still baby barra still what if barstow stays in barstow uh it's a beautiful morning in the glamorous gardens of barstow california and although the rotson hasn't exactly failed we still have shit in the punch bowl so when you speed up even a little bit it makes a horrible noise it feels like a driveshaft is hitting the bottom of the floorboards but in a really horrible way but the thing is it has that independent rear suspension where the driveshaft and pinion shouldn't move, but that's how it is?
I'm about to find out that I'm not entirely sure what all the noise is, but it definitely sounds rotational and it seems like every time we accelerate and the car squats something hits the driveshaft and it could be this mount that's swaying up. I don't see many witness marks, but I'll pull it out anyway, nothing more. It's extra weight and we don't need it. it was what was banging vegas baby vegas fix ok good job no no no no no I don't have a door latch you may find it hard to believe but we took a random detour into the desert and this is las vegas boulevard this goes all the way pull this goes up there and it's parallel to the land and the desert ok there's the prison ok we're not going to stop here but after the prison yeah so we're almost in vegas the car it still works and we haven't done anything. exhaustion, and more importantly, the rotten hasn't failed yet, so we need to give it the best chance to fail.
Okay, let's find a desert to play in our natural habitat that might be bottoming out, yeah just a little bit, I guess that was rotten levels. of violence that was pretty good it works and you know what it is l rolling maybe it will take us to the weeknight show it works come on vegas vegas baby you're so money you don't even know your money oh man you're like I'm just a big bear in these claws look at these gloves we're four miles from the convention center four miles from sema and it's 235 degrees ah what do you think go ahead i thought it would fail oh it would fail but the question is does it fail here on the strip does it fail at the convention center where all the cool cars are?
I can't believe the water is still in right now technically we've won we made it here but we're still four miles from sema at the convention center and now we're actually getting overheated that's 236 degrees on the climb there's a lot of holes In this car that cool can go through when this thing finally blows up, I hear it's 240. I smell you almost don't want to pull over to the curb dude if you show up near a pedestrian. ian we're in trouble i know we have to get in a lot or something let's get in here um the rotten failed and technically we made it we made it i can smell the corn dogs in that convention center from here oh yeah it's literally right there we are in vain there is a ferris wheel we have vegas we have the strip we have everything we did not make it to the sema show what happened is that we were burnt out as you know and it got hot and we have on the highway and it did not get better and we got into the traffic, it went over 240 degrees while sitting in traffic so walking walking i love this car i hate this car look at it it's the razor it's back rodson rules that's right It stops, turns, swerves, makes donuts, the only thing it doesn't do is stay calm in traffic and I don't care, I'm not sure fryburger understands what true love is, I don't care how much this car hurts me. every once in a while it shows me just a little bit of performance i get really excited and then it's gone i'm stranded and i agree finnegan loves this car but the thing is every time i start to develop just a little bit of affection maybe even a little puppy love goes off the cliff for me and right now i would say i absolutely love it the transmission we swapped in the rear is great because it didn't break but it does thump and makes a little bit of noise, Like maybe it had a bad bearing and worst of all it eventually failed us and the problem is now the cooling system. the good thing is there's nothing here that we can't fix more easily and hopefully it won't settle for another two years.
I take that back, let's just let it sit for like another five years. be cool with me i hope they changed the theme song for the end of this episode i feel like it deserves better than what we usually get like rock music or something definitely yes the tiger you
