Roadkill Chasing a Landspeed Record at Bonneville with a 1100hp Camaro!

Jun 28, 2022
in this episode of

roadkill

we drove to the

bonneville

salt flats so david could kill our

camaro

there are three pistons left in the last episode we bought this 73 chevy ramp truck for 3500 bucks to transport our race car to

bonneville

it is also completely untested and not tested, and we got to use it to drive 650 miles with a race car in the back, top speed racing is kind of these days, it shows up all over the place, you see things happen at standing mile events in various states, but grandpa the great is speed week at the bonneville salt flats and in fact in 1949 hot rod magazine helped get this event started on the bonneville salt flats it was the first time hot rodders had raced there for me it really has a lot of history and it's my passion is racing what i like to do we have raced this 81

camaro

there since 2004 i have a partnership agreement with keith and tanya you rk where they own the car and keith runs that mechanical part of it and i'm in charge of the engines i failed at that a couple of years ago when a carb vent fell through this big block and completely destroyed the engine we went back and we got a

record

on two cylinders and that destroyed the thing even more but that was 2011 2012 we didn't race this year we had to so we rebuilt that engine Finnegan put it together we took it to the dyno at West Tech and we made 1100 Horsepower by the time we got to the dyno, it had gone almost 72 hours straight. building the engine in my shop i can build an engine in three days but i have usually spent two weeks simulating the parts to make sure they fit before making it so this deal is a total disaster nothing bolted to this engine without something massaging and cursing a bit what we have here is a big block chevy it's 489 cubic inches which is a 454 with quarter inch travel the big problem is the vortex supercharger it's making 10lbs of boost and I'm blowing a carb which is a bit It's a bit unconventional but the thing is that in the classic class I'm racing you have to have a carb and this is what I've chosen to do.

People also ask where your intercooler is. The atomization of the gas leaving the impellers. it actually draws heat from the air so it falls 100 degrees through the carb 200 degrees in is 100 degrees out this whole room to carry everything you need to go to the race doesn't get any better than this it sure is old and scratchy and whatever but it has character even if it doesn't get us there it's good character this is our first attempt to put this car on the ramp truck and it doesn't look like it's going to go very well going this way it's already hitting something look now stop turning it like this ok wait the easiest thing would have been to throw the bonneville car in an enclosed trailer but man i always wanted the ramp truck i just dont know how it will handle 5000 lbs of irreplaceable race car in th We hit the road again in the morning.

Good over here. Let's go to Utah again. It's only been two days. in a limo i don't know why the air conditioner is on right now you want to enjoy all the luxuries right away radio air conditioner windows that go all the way up maybe we need the air conditioner before it overheats we might as well enjoy it now we'll heat it up right away , yeah ok here we go just feel the pleasure coming off the dash 1973 GM air i don't know if i should say this out loud but i'm actually cold. now i'm completely bad too i'm going to turn down the pleasure here i didn't want to admit it i'm glad you went there that's a good air conditioner maybe it's not that cold we're just not used to having air conditioning so it feels really cold 60 seems like this is where this thing wan ts to go yeah not quite the speed limit but faster than you can legally go with the trailer behind you and thats all i care what i dont get is the total lack of driveshaft vibration well its original no one has ever lowered the thing i know i'm not used to that oh look at the factory printout of when this thing was bought this came from oregon you said who bought it ok find to the guy sold to cheryl's mazda this was a mazda dealer truck a mazda dealer bought a chevy to haul mazdas in 1973. when stopped on an upgrade don't hold the truck with the engine use the service brake or just sitting there, stop against the converter on a hill, be careful, do not rev the engine more than 10 seconds while holding the vehicle with the brakes. they thought we were going to go drag racing I guess I don't like these rules the first 120 miles was pretty good but as we got off the flats and closer to the mountains things started to get interesting I mean , slow so right now I'm going to 50 because I'm partially accelerating on flat by the time we hit a hill we're done if I accelerate it ramps up and wants to shut off yeah like there's very little fuel in the bowls so when throttle back yeah breaking the extreme term we are resting in the lap of luxury as we experience minor difficulty with our fuel delivery please dont go to drive inferno right now up the hill i know we have a stereo what HE. we've got a/c i know we're spoiled come on baby we're having an RV passing us the thing is ramping up cause it's starving for gas it needs a fuel pump or the fuel filters are clogged it's got a mechanical fuel pump.
roadkill chasing a landspeed record at bonneville with a 1100hp camaro
It's got two tanks of gas and it's got a switching valve here from one tank to the other and this is an electric pump but I don't think it's working right it's not working wait stop stop turn it off so the fuel is getting here. There is a chance this filter is clogged that seems clogged thats the problem i need a piece of hose reroute it yes that will work that will work we are stealing a piece of vacuum line from the engine now i need to find a stud to drill into the vacuum line to avoid having a vacuum leak is there are random bolts in the cab of the camaro um there we go got it one man's misery is another man's fortune you can usually fix your car with crap lag his car caught fire and his watch caught fire i gotta see to annabolt this will hit the road and the road will respond to you whenever there is that much wind.

I should put this on the side of the road for the next guy. You may need it. Maybe not. Maybe you need three inches of fuel line and that's it, I'll let the three inches of fuel line from the a/c do the trick. We got the Ram truck running again and rolled up to Baker California, tightened the thing up a bit more, and of course made a stop at Alien Fresh Jerky. because you have to be in vega but once we hit the r Again pretty obvious this junk didn't actually fix it wasn't clogging this fuel filter so now we're narrowing it down to the fuel pump we had a spare, we are launching it in theory, I will be running. like 200+ miles an hour tomorrow or in two days no if we don't get there you're comfortable working on the side of the road with semi trucks whizzing by because you know none of those guys has been up for 48 hours what semis after you put on The new fuel pump, I got under the truck to check for other leaks on both gas tanks and that's when I got a piece of rust in my eye. hit the road my eye kept getting worse and that meant our next stop was our local urgent care found another fuel leak under the truck in the middle of nowhere learned my lesson glasses because for the last three hours finnegan has been down the street he got to stay here in vegas and get what i dealt first thing in the morning while i shoot all the way to i think ely nevada get a room so i have the bonneville in the morning and none of that will happen until i fix this filter that's going to spurt at least a gallon of gas in my face ok that's plug that one let that one get away and not splash my eye oh yeah cars are so much fun oh wow this is so much more bigger than three eighths this is going to be bad ok we've narrowed it down to just a Minor Environmental Hazard I wish Finnegan was here and could at least make him do this.
Maybe I should run to the ER with Finnegan and check myself in. It's a good night's sleep there. Oh yeah, it just went off. it's another new issue that i'm not sure we've mentioned yet the ramp truck has a random electrical issue where it just has no power at all for no reason and then it magically comes back on for no reason oh I'm done eventually figured out that the greml electric The faults were caused by all the main power cables in the starter coming completely loose once it was fixed the ramp truck was running stronger than ever and still had four hours to go The Turks have turned up here today who are my partners in the race car they brought our race trailer with us so we have all our gear and everything i just want three hours we have four that truck is good it's really cool it's really good today is friday there have been people in the salinas for a couple of weeks hauling all the courses making them smooth its completely run by volunteer s and the other thing they do is set up the pits and the technical inspection lanes.
We are quite behind schedule but hopefully we can get there. Time to prepare our pits and have the car safety inspected. You don't really know how fast you're going because if you look here, you have no perspective. There are no railings. There's no trees. Nothing of that. It's going fast because the car is screaming and you look at the tack and you know mathematically what you're doing but there's not that sense of speed like there would be if there was a brick wall here or if you were an independent race track trying to turn a corner or kind of it's like driving on the moon these guys are doing what people did in the 40's and 50's which is using the old mosquito netting or remnants of the army camo to build their tent at this point the car still it had not been fired.
For the first time this year and there was a lot of work to be done, but the ramp truck had worked well and Finnigan was finally on his way and there was a week of racing ahead in theory on behalf of Hot Rod i magazine. i would like to introduce david freiburger to present the hot rod trophy the other thing that has happened here since 1949 is hot rod has given out a top time trophy which is for the fastest one way pass during speed week that has been won by the poteet and the lead car the top time trophy four years in a row The trophies down here you will see your name on them last year they were 423 miles per hour and they changed i understand some people are looking for you we will see it all week thank you all so much so that after seeing three doctors in two days my terminator eyeball is fine out of the three diagnoses the one i feel most comfortable with is you had dirt in your eye it's gone you'll be fine we're just checking the car doing a couple of last minute things. checking everything because you don't like trash falling out when you're going 240 or 50 miles an hour hmm so what are you doing there?
There is a small leak. I'm putting a new set of plugs in there. within minutes of firing it, which in road coil time is mere hours. I'm calculating what kind of equipment we want to put. It's a quick-change rear end, so we can choose what we want. I think I'm going to put a 280 there we go that's what I was looking for that's like a 218 right there look at the big difference between the size the little one goes on the bottom there we go that's it looking here what classes we go to run this is the smooth obviously a classic roost gas burnt 207 miles an hour when Finnegan leaves so he doesn't like to freak out too much and wince because this is completely Mickey Mouse.
We can unplug one cylinder and run this and unplug another cylinder and pretend we're not, we're not. I work very hard on this engine. we're going to use most of it can we start with this? can we go further? yeah this is what happens when you don't have the car fully primed before you go to the races you find things like yeah check this out there is no the fuel coming out of a fuel line is new like it wasn't used in the dyno I didn't plumb it I don't know plug in the float bowl that was a mike finnegan it keeps the engine from blowing up on the first pass right there I can stay the dyno shop puts a plug in the float bowl to keep the dirt out outside and of course we didn't look for it when we connected both fuel lines when starting the car for the first time.
This is a great moment here. The car has been sitting for a couple of years. He built an engine in three. days we will run starting first without oil pressure still theindicator works safety inspection in bonneville is pretty tough because when things go wrong over 200 mph it goes very wrong that means you have to have a fire system on board the parachute and all the regular lap belts and Everything safety inspectors usually point out is a couple of small things in the car, but we navigated successfully. They closed the technical part of the actual paperwork two minutes before we were done, so we won't.
We'll be racing until they open at ten o'clock tomorrow morning but the good news is the car will be fully prepped in the morning and we can drink beer now so it's really all good here's why this week of speed yes not speed day right now its sunday morning our third day on the salt we finally get ready for the race even though its the fastest place in the world things happen a little slow we're going to roll put on gas spec for the class we're running and then get to the start line and we should be running early this morning before it hits 100 degrees the current class

record

in the that i am racing right now is 207 miles per hour so i am calculating at what rpm will i exceed that in fourth gear i need to get to 6500 rpm and this is 2 30. this is the worst part of racing the weighting the tweaker in me wants remove the hood of the car ok now and give everything one more look though i don't want to do that because it means nothing more than standing there ain't got nothing to do so i'll just keep walking when you get to the line you gotta make sure they're strapped in in your car in plenty of time the fire pit is out pull up the window net and and the bonneville salt flats are all alone ready to shoot fast the rear gears are backwards our first run was a complete waste of time , I couldn't even get out of second gear before I realized something was seriously wrong, we had put the gears backwards on the quickshifter, the big gear is supposed to go on the bottom and the small one on the top top the smallest goes on the bottom however last year when we drove the car two years ago when we blew out the engine and set that record on two cylinders we needed a re gear ratio seven to one so we changed the gears which was an attempt at a gear ratio six to one which doesn't work very well so now we're correcting that and giving me the ability to run once again to over 200 miles an hour meanwhile on the course a 462 car it's flying fourth is 194 775 shooters when it passes the three at 200599 it was a disaster couldn't get there early I came up short changed it to trying to get it to connect but it's just doing this all the time since our last run the engine has developed a pretty good misfire bad enough that we're pulling the valve covers and now we're checking the fuel system ignition that ignition box has been on the car for six years or more so not surprising and it eventually died the new ignition system seemed to fix the misfire we had one more race left of the day s e shoots out at a 191658 muzzle velocity of 199.84 which looks a lot like a race track except it's more like a sandbox no traction at all hopefully. we will be able to reach our number tomorrow because we didn't make it today.
The best we could run is 200, even when we needed to get to 207 to qualify for that record. We didn't want to drive around the ramp truck in the salt because the salt will destroy this, it'll rust right away, so we've been borrowing our neighbor's truck for the past two days. make a push bar for the front of our truck or i an old tire and some plywood and some ratchet straps so now we are one step closer to being self supporting this is one of the few types of racing in The ones making your car heavier may be better, we're looking for traction and so I managed to pull 300lbs of lead out of our friend Lisa Sileo.
I'm fixing it in the car here. Some things have changed since yesterday. We don't race the number one course anymore because the traction there was so horrible that we just weren't. We didn't get anywhere, a lot of runners agreed with that, so we're on our way too. The second thing is that we found out that there is another runner in our same class who qualified for this record this morning at 225 miles per hour. how the records work in bonneville you run a qualifying pass right now that beats the existing record and in the morning you run a backup pass the average of those two passes should beat the existing record so even if we run slower than the 225 that the other guy ran at us.
I'll have potential to break that record in the morning, but we're not going to do that, we're going to go out here and set a number right now. keith turk machine car 462 has gone through the two at 184.4 reporter at 200.3 206.593 for three two one seven six four zero mile four i think he did it almost 8000 rpm i don't understand how it can stay open for so long and only go so fast the tax that was almost at 8000 rpm what should have been 245 miles an hour 250 tires has to be finally we had to get into a little bit of strategy because we qualified for this record at 217 miles an hour but the transam had run that as well tomorrow and it had gone eight miles an hour faster than us that thing doesn't even have an air dam on it we can stay here and run for the record in the morning but we're going to work on the drive the car around a bit and see if we can find something we don't like where we know we can go faster and if that's the case we're going to run out and do another pass today if you leave the tank without backing up you sped up then you threw that record attempt.
We made two changes here at the rear of the car. New blower pulley in the front but our blower pulley and belts don't quite fit and we're trying to get this together and get to the starting line real quick by the time we would have worked out what we wanted to do with the car mechanically we'd spend enough time on the impound that we weren't going to have another run and we decided to just hang in there and try to do our record comeback run the next morning every morning at the bonneville salt flats the first thing that happens is record comeback runs everyone Cars that qualified for a record the day before line up and parade to the start line and get the first chance to race down the track I n the morning it's 7:00 AM.
The sun is peeking over the horizon and this is going to be our best chance all week to put up some good numbers in this class because they moved the track last night so we've got fresh salt we put more momentum in the car we have less equipment crosses the fingers our 462 now running on the first the current temperature is 82 degrees outside the humidity is relatively high here at 24 this morning it also happened at one seventy-six four nine listen to the command at one eighty-eight four one seven for three one nine zero nine two four six seven seven the history of engines the bottom line is we increased the momentum of this thing I tipped it out and it blew up should have smelled the oil should have felt the power going was it Overall it would be easy to be depressed about what happened, all that hard work, all that money that went into a car and then we don't get a record, but let's be honest, David just traveled 217 miles per hour on a n super old camaro. with an engine we built in three days a year we set five records in five days in five different classes i have never left speed week without setting a record so far but you know what i blame

roadkill

i started working on it only got to 200. it's nice indeed a mess you're the boy from rokio isn't it? yeah that was weird i showed my mom the video of the van and everything and my mom heard the dirty word and she's not looking back anymore you're done yeah that was it that's not me that was the other guy wait, who's that guy over there? oh yeah yeah my mom is mad at him in one episode they took a van and wagon and drove him into the desert and just beat them up yeah who would garrett be? the bad bad prius and oh i hate prius i wanna go old school on gas
