REVIEW: Everything Wrong With A Ford F150 5.4 Triton V8

Jun 09, 2021
ok its my lucky day i got to work on a

ford

oh no here we have a 2004 f-150 with the owner actually told me its sitting on a 250 rig but its actually a 150 like this which is probably something similar to heavy duty GM 1500 where they had the heavier axle this one actually has seven bolts on the rim which I find strange it's a nice truck they sell a lot of them generally had some issues with The engines, this one has a Triton 5-4. Ford used the Triton from 97 to 2010 and changed a few things along the way going from two valve to three valve to four and different variations of the Tritons with superchargers and Mustangs and lightning and stuff the biggest problem you'll see when Google five. for Triton it's spark plug issues and if you stay tuned that's ok not a huge problem but if you buy a new truck you have no idea what the previous owner did and on the previous Triton they only had two three wires holding the spark it plugs in and drives a long time and results the spark plug hit the hood and depending on which shop at the time they probably wanted to rip the head off and I probably would have recommended it at the time because you had the Healy coil and you risk them falling off those chips and so on there and having premature failure in their cylinders they came up with better tools later cameras vacuums to get in the hole and make sure

is clean there's more there's text driving just heavy winding , Triton, that's your main job, it's a common problem. later they decided to put too many threads in there, they have a steel plug in the aluminum head and they would rust together and also use this horrible two piece spark plug that would break in half when you try to loosen it. so the solution to this is to put some anti-stick around the threads.

The problem is Danny sees that it's a film that goes between the two metals so it doesn't rust or come into contact, these spark plugs are about 25-30 bucks and we're probably more if you go ahead and put too much you never see, It doesn't make good ground and you have 50 cent spark efficiency. offshore scrap so i'll be disappointed that forward that after 120 years of making engines and cars they still don't know how to properly put a spark plug in an engine i think when they really got it right putting a helical in a lumen how do i think that they realized that well this ending is pretty decent now let's stop doing it we came up with something new let's try 20 turbo v6 now hope it works for them these draytons also have multiple issues where the manifold rots get a the hole in it the gaskets don't work you know anywhere between i've seen it go to 20,000K i've seen it go anytime after that it's usually ok you would have warranty and it's no good when your parts supplier has like four or five manifolds on the shelf because they sell that a lot of them these these tiny little studs that like to break off when you remove the manifold it's a big giant pain in the ass you have a sp steel stud an aluminum head and now you're trying to drill the stud you're drilling into the aluminum it becomes a big mess yeah on top of that they also have roller rockers in 2004 they came out with all three valves these two intakes, an exhaust, and a very efficient engine that makes about 300 horsepower and about 360 pound-feet of torque something without it.

I think the roller rockers are a nice addition if they last, but you also come across this where the rocker arms like to break what happens then it's the valve pistons and it starts with a little tick and then a loud tick and then a big pop it's a catastrophic failure throw your engine away they my engine rebuild they won't even rebuild them anymore , a big problem with overhead cam and variable valve timing is if you don't have the proper clearances on that camshaft once you take it apart they usually have to line up. hem to make sure the phasor has enough oil pressure and that controls the variable valve timing and the valve seats the Pistons so you've had so many returns on the Tritons you won't rebuild them so you're stuck with a junk junkyard engine how many miles on it if they could prove it's ok but how good was the owner at replacing the spark plug the valve covers and oil pan and did they cover timely it has a good reusable seal very nice to work with I found that out because the engine this customer bought for this truck when it was delivered fell off the back of the truck it was a lady driving it without a power tailgate and the owner was not home there was just his wife between them while loading it fell off and crushed the valve cover.

The aluminum valve cover was melted and parts cracked. I had to remove the valve cover and timing, remove the cover and remove the oil pan to get the small parts out, so a lot more work that way, but because the gaskets were reusable that saved it a bit thankfully, the previous owner of this engine put never sees in the spark plugs so the spark plugs came out easily when we removed the manifolds because his project started about a year ago there was a squirrel living in the exhaust and leaving some nuts behind so we had to remove the plug anyway and you would have to see what shape they were in and that's not good.

These plugs were brand new they came on nice and easy so that was wonderful. We put a camera there. to make sure there's nothing on the pistons before I flip it I just added a little more time that's all we're going to get this engine out look how hard it is I'm pretty sure if I get a buck for every time I I swear I can pay off most of my mortgage, I know I stick to Ford a lot, but even just looking at it I know GM has a nice little plate that holds the rad on top.
Take out two bolts on each side and say up. mount it you can take out your rad radio this is a one piece so we have to leave your plugin which makes it a lot more painful to install the motor and fix little issues like that that kinda bug me but let's break those valves or start by taking out the torque converter bolts and the head and

is already taken apart all the parts were in the back of the truck so we put all the engines together i think we got everything everything was well marked so ah here we go this it's a 5-4 going into the 150 it came from tow trucks and i don't know much about it makes me wary but the customer wrecked the truck and gave me this engine so i don't really have anything under warranty when they dropped it off ,though it also fell off and the rocker cover had a hole drilled into it now I don't have one of the pieces on the other piece so I had to take the valve cover off to take a look to see if it was on the valve cover valve, it wasn't, so we had s to remove it Remove the timing cover and oil pan to see if the parts are there. and they're not so I'm comfortable with that you know I had to take the exhaust manifolds out they're always a problem and the studs always break we got new headers for the common problem with these and we're going to do a test run compression. on it pulling one of the manifolds we just have a wall nut put in there so something was living in there but we'll stick the cam in the spark plug hole and then make sure this engine is ready to go so here we go.
Hello, how do I get into these? you remove that intake it's just the row of bolts on each side once you have the intake out of the way you can see the two bolts on the top of the bell housing there they are almost impossible to get to from below when you you take it out and put it back in again just leave that intake grille out of the whole picture very big engine this Triton width and height wise so just getting rid of that intake gives you the clearance you need as well put it all together and the stupid truck won't work. scratching my head trying to figure out what it is.
You can see the light on it - it flashes on and off, so it's not theft. There's no burglary light on on it. it had to have something to do with the spark so it's not the sensor behind the tire or the fuel relay or whatever that's in the back that likes to fall off the truck because all the salt and crap comes back there but it turns i found the low oil, crank sensor, cam sensor and cam phaser all used the same plugs now i didnt separate it so i didnt know how they routed the loom but i went back to each one of those sensors and that's why it wouldn't start most of the sockets were labeled but w It's written in pen on 3m paint tape and i let it sit for two years.
I couldn't read it further, so I've never come across where you use the same plug for the sensors, that's just stupid and long wires. enough that you can do it backwards. It took me about an hour and a half to figure that out, but now it starts, it sounds pretty good, so we'll take it for a bit. making sure the brakes work good sounds good no exhaust leaks I'm happy about that um yeah we'll do some final thinking during the drive and so the f-150 test behind this is actually two months later that i actually put the motor in if you're wondering why this fits anywhere but i said i was going to give it a try and drove it all the way to the end of the driveway slammed on the brakes and actually ended up splitting both rotors in half because the rotors are rotten so customer canes know i have rotors and extra pads like kicks and all i'll take care of i'll take care of it from there perfect wash my hands in the

ford

God running ran it took him down the road ran perfectly at idle and low rpm and balloon suzy got under load or high rpm will start to ping and knock and my madness so they brought no codes to another shop that has better school scanned to old than me and no they could reso lsee it but before that he almost made it and he dropped the suspension bearing in the driveshaft so it sucks because ford one time 1800 bucks for the suspension bearing because it comes with the rest of the driveshaft and they won't let you just replace the hanger bay so if that happens I've heard of shops that will replace the hanger bay but they are few and far between me and myself a gore drive line says you're screwed so ended up finding one for eight hundred bucks but from the state somewhere but it still took a long time to get that drive shaft so they couldn't they couldn't road test the vehicle no codes it runs fine and at idle and would hang in knock out a full speed they couldn't figure it out so they put a jack on it they thought the jack was capped and maybe that's what didn't change anything so he took it again took the timing cap off after doing a bunch of homework and found that if the engine won't start and it backs up on compression it spins back very fast it can actually jump a tooth on the timing chain because the tensioners are fat under oil pressure I think the oil pressure isn't it's in the tensioner still and then you can skip it too so that's what happens kept a tooth got rid of the ping on hits but then he got a number one bank lien so he couldn't figure it out and scratched his head and this and that I tried the cam phasers and tried everything to try to find out what that bank lien was.
I actually took it to a ford dealer we did a test drive and said oh spark plugs even though those spark plugs were new they looked in a spec arrester on them that was a 25 dollar spark plug a 200 dollar plus spark plug late works fine so i finally got it all figured out but thats my problem with ford tom wont let you get the hanger that takes 1800 bucks 25 bucks spark plugs stupid designs like cam stage is running under oil pressure and tensioner running under oil pressure yeah great truck when it runs great it's quiet nice interior but when they break they break this really wasn't worth putting this truck on this engine I don't think apart from the fact that's paid for and it's on the way and yeah no problem getting insurance and anything else that way but that's one of the reasons I won't be buying because this is an oldie for an XL XLT FX 2 FX for Larry in Ki ng All Ranch have different brakes and brake calipers and the reason they do is there are less aftermarket companies that will make each specific brake caliper brake system and you have to go back to Ford paying more for astronomical prices for what they want instead of you're good now the trucks don't weigh that much of a difference they make the brakes the same they actually cost more to do this but they make a lot more money when it's time to fix it so they are good trucks if you you're using like a lease or whatever but after the hundred thousand k 150 thousand k i wouldn't buy one your friend has a platinum has a room for aplatinum let's say you had a curb in the winter you missed that corner 1800 bucks to Kirk that little contraption that drops your running board for 1800 bucks for that little plastic here that drops your running board it's ridiculous um it all looks like 1800 bucks driveshafts lo whatever but that's a working ford it's on the way i'll never buy one good luck hey thanks for watching don't forget to like and subscribe if you love the channel consider picking a tape boss to get those projects going faster so you have more time to watch YouTube and remember that if you are not dirty you are not rich
