wrongjust a few things one is really really big two um neither part is ambidextrous so left stock is left right is right not like the ls that we really like to get. tricky swaps like the mercedes and led where things have to go backwards but there's no point in talking about that if you remember the silverado video we picked up a f155 liter and there's definitely something wrong with that so let's head over to scott in north city who has more experience with
coyotes than me so let's take him down with scott go over why he thinks he's a great mover and why he thinks they're better than me.
I'm going to discuss it on a few points and I'm going to ag Ree with a few points lets get into here we're going good so in case you're wondering what was going on we bought the mustang because it had a new coyote boss 302 on it but they couldn't get it to work like this What I'm going to put the holley system on the mustang Get it in gear Hit the car for a while then kill the
enginePut it in the Bronco Meanwhile this one came out super cheap and this is a 2013 F-150 so this is the coyote engine less desirable because the lower wattage first gen had some small issues this one grabbed thats a problem oh no fram is still in business even after the internet loves to hate that the filter wasn't very tight i suspect someone had that out of the only thing they really share is the block the heads are completely different it has soda filled valves different camshafts the crankshaft is the same but the journals are hardened in a way it was different and they are balanced differently with the different pistons and cranks it doesn't have oil jets the coyote also doesn't have this cold intake that increases torque doesn't drop torque increases horsepower one of the two um anyway let's get the one out tray let's see what we find here we go so many filings in the oil lots and lots of filings that's funny that's pretty crazy look at that so it's not just cummins that does it ford five liters does it too the bolt came loose perfectly i don't know damaged at all the tip bent a little as it was going down the jack would have bent but um yeah they both came out never had it before in my life now i've had two in the last two months crazy it's ok so again not gonna lie im a little green to coyotes and ford gas engines other than my hate for the 5'4 but its here what did he do that made you tons of money?
I would talk to scott, who does all of our engine development in the channel. and uh get your opinion on why the 5 liter is better than the ls or is it very good there yes I haven't actually done many of them I have done a few for the local dealer this is one of the best ford engines yes , yeah that's good no huh come knocking on your door you do a big power stretch yeah yeah I try not to be nice so if you lift the hood and open the hood it's a very clean engine Nice even though it's very big and that's because of the two overhead camshafts. what i did i think i did three or four each so they can't go on seems to be the only problem we just upgrade
everythingmostly connecting raw bearings i get to them before they screw it up so it's the bearings that go are the bearings u h and the clearances between them have updated bearings i have personally made for i have gotten there before this happens whats the telltale sign noise noise yes it starts to make a rocket start to bounce i dont know if dealers make the change automatically when i get a certain number of miles or i just get the job i want to see that sooner in a service manual like that 50,000k rotate the tires change the batteries 150,000 rebuild the engine i have seen a couple of videos on the gt500s also that have had the same problem let's see if we can keep it in there yes these things are stuck in there because the stucco yes sure put my old e spacio this morning we had a bit of a mud buildup, it's so typical, what do you think? and it's kind of discolored, usually discoloration is usually what I see on the synthetic, that's ok, I think the synthetic is very popular to run on these engines. calls for him from ford uh thats because the phaser wants a thinner oil that goes through the little filters they use to do their phaser which is controlled by oil pressure.
If it doesn't get to the right temperature it will actually crystallize and start leaving little deposits all over the place and that's why I start to see on the pistons in the oil rings very common most people can't see that side from the damage that the synthetic stuff could not that it's bad it works too well but it's not designed for a short drive vehicle here it's funny this is a different color than this the drivers are like a light brown yeah , the passengers are dark like a cherry red almost and not so much mud on this one this one is like a little while this one is much worse yeah it's really hanging there that's weird yeah you should see all the campus stuff too all the buildup all the scab on that side you can see it's scabbed and it's flaky right in this you can see where it's gummy just because it's sitting there and it builds up you can get the gumminess and that's just from the synthetic oils so you've sid or all time ford fan and four six is my favorite engine ok its bullet proof uh very easy mods to do every engine has its issues but the 406 is pretty much top of my personal list , no cam phaser, single 46 top cam, plenty of power and everything to go around. guys mustang cobra mustang guys 2001 you'll understand where i'm coming from better engine one thing we didn't mention is this five liter is not ford's first attempt at a camp red dual huh i don't know all the engines out there but they made a really good engine , i think on the city cars i also think the marauder had it and it was a 46 dual overhead cam engine with no cams but they really messed with that because well they have two versions of those engines and some of the cam gears on a they're keyless and they slip so even timing gets really hard too um but that was a really really cool engine ok a lot of hot rod guys on those then went to the 542 valve pretty much essentially the same than the four six very very my new differences nothing really crazy bore size obviously I'm sure I'll get a lot of posts on that but in terms of identical engine machining ok very easy l from working on lots and lots of mods uh the only typical problem really look at those motors the lifter tables in the head uh if you don't do regular maintenance the lifters start to clog up the lifters they solidify and then break the side of the head and then I weld them back together. fixed then the three valve five four is when it all went well then the abort oh yeah huh not one of my fan favorites I've already stopped working on those engines no fix for them they had a single overhead three valve engine of overhead cams and the problem in my opinion and from experience of w working on the spring pressure was not fixed so they were pushing the cams up which was wearing down the cam caps and then the small fibers and the little pieces of that would get clogged in the cam phase filters causing all the canvas or issues are ok so they offer a kit where you can reattach the caps, re-drill the caps the cams and put in an insert bearing the exact same bearing you would find on your bottom end only smaller actually the same bearing is what they do on atvs it's just an insert bearing from the ser ie p but it's a very expensive fix for an engine that should be found in the junkyard that's it but they're all fixed with two overhead cams which are all fixed as long as you do the main thing ok all these synthetics which again in my opinion have their place in the industry but little things like this were just a time bomb there are tools to set and time everything can't be done. without a couple of blocks of wood to hold things in places no no no nothing like that normally i just let the dealers do that i do all the machining oh look at the dirt yeah it was off road or something like a different kind of mud it's like never seas not so scary when you get into it the other worst thing for an engine is to change oil manufacturer yes because nowadays many oils are so modified by manufacturers that one oil works for the other so that you get the typical value buyer, I call them the guys. who go to walmart and canyon tires and fucking sam's club or whatever and change all the different whole grain oils take it to the chicken tube that's your recycled oil so all these different plants don't get mixed up so a chain drives a camshaft and second cam intake comes off exhaust a lot of these cams are hollow cams because that's where the oil pressure goes through yeah so if the pressure is in the center and you do the two ends you can bend t he cam or possibly break the cam ok so you'll see how much pressure comes out of the screen as well like it lifted up a bit oh it should have started at the same time i hear a lot of grunting in there yeah it's okay.
I don't work with you, nothing more Canadian than china cups and Mastercraft first, I'll just double check that all the lids are numbered because you definitely don't want them swapped and then you'll have to worry about trying to find out. figure out which one to lose in the right place yeah it's a big squeal two you don't want to mix them up because we just added eight hours to your rebuild oh you just hit it with a hammer oh ok trying to be nice hit it with the hammers thats how it works huh i have seen or heard rockers come out of over rev ok but not sure if this this gen has had a problem you got it yeah you are taller oh that's what it is yeah i'm short and compact i can see you holding the grunt i can see e in your vein on your forehead look there you go it's not that bad oh that can definitely be fixed yes there's a little bit missing right there nice scrape anyway i don't think it was bouncing much before it came loose no i think it got stuck pretty quickly so it's against the side of the launch.
Would you be concerned about the crankshaft bending or warping? You could possibly have all the tools to verify that. generally mic it for size ok but we can throw all that out and even if it's bent i can straighten it out so 2nd and 3rd gens come with bigger tubes yeah they're not much you said no it was like 34 or something something like 0.3 or something but there haven't been any issues like diesels breaking in heads you've seen in the middle yeah they're pretty good especially the five liters even the four sixes I'm the only cracks I see lift boards that's all they're pretty pre tty alright oh yeah she's thick down there yeah so she's a cast iron borer so I think in 2014 they went silver dent 13 15 15 they went to the cylinders of the next cell, that's okay, because two of the engines I've already done.
Are they still boring so you can't do anything that isn't fixable? Well, you see the line there. I sanded the charcoal so you can see the color difference. so the sleeves are in a cast and the engine is built by pouring the plaster around the sleeves so when I get into it when I really start to get bored to repair the sleeves they are bumpy because that's what keeps the sleeve on a better, stronger surface area. Okay, I'll bore all this, but it doesn't feel too bad. I feel like we could probably do an oversize one or two probably an oversize one so we have two options we can either holster this cylinder bring it back to stock and reuse all the parts or we drill and grind the whole block and turn it into a five liter real because it's only like 4.96 or something and then they round it up so it's not a true 5 liter the only thing with that which is a common misconception even 350 is what a lot of people say when they tackle 30 plus and those stuff but now they have a 355 and so it doesn't work like that if you replace with factory pistons if we were to bore all of this out let's say 30 mil when we replace the factory pistons they actually reduce the compression height for the oversized bore , ok so it's still math the numbers still even out nice but they make up for it because computers are very finicky when it comes to things especially this generation inc luso on the 355 you go through 30 ok it's offset in compression clearance yeah so the top of the piston actually got lowered so they're not shiftingreally the engine ok it just sounds good i think first gen even though its a cass sheet they had problems with it runs so it goes oblong then burns oil so it got fixed on 2nd gen and then in the third gem, they were transferred to plasma and wired up somehow, so I think they like to solder a sleeve in there, something like that. last generation so 2018.
So by doing it that way they make the sleeve even smaller so it's actually a 5.02 or five nine it's a real five liter yeah so see if that fits It maintains, but yeah, we're going to take the head off, hit the pistons. turn off and see if any of them are oblong yeah if that's a problem i think it was a problem with the first gen it's a nice cute engine now yeah only 10x better multi layer gaskets there twisty bolts , so like the engine I came in. Tough, you said one of the bolts came loose.
I thought so, in most torque to produce applications I usually don't see bolts backing out, that's fine just because they are designed to really turn and have a lot of compression. I don't see often th Let's push a bit and see if that wasn't really good now if we see damage to this bearing it might lead us to explain what could happen so that's what I don't like to see I really don't like Watching the bearings come out I realize that often when the bearings stay on the crankshaft some people will argue that the oil sucker will hold it up yes but I really don't like the sign of that ok and if it happens on another then that's why i started looking at some of the rods ok there's enough stress and crush on these rods that they stay there so concern there is a sign it's starting to seize It's ok, it's not lack of oil. its not a bit going through when you start to see like the little bubbling and fidgeting there ok that was starting to get ready to tighten up typically on low oil i dont see it on this or your oil pumps the front so if there is a problem with the oil pump it will start at number eight first doesn't mean it's impossible this could happen if this one was maybe a little tighter than the rest ok huh it's possible maybe something will stuck in the old gallery finally i'll get this piston out if that bearing stays in there too uh and what we can do is tighten this again and set up our mic and see uh see what we got right so this was the biggest problem with the first gen and the second generation they did some kind of yes you said center centered which is a castle rot or forged rod centered and then they never had a problem again so these are i-beam yes in a lot of these situations tions when we have a cracked rod like this they offer oversized bearings but what happens is it's the hole in the shell that changes so you can't like a traditional rod say like on a 350 I can cut the top and bottom and resize the rods on these that can so they offer an oversized bearing with teeth on the outside diameter so I can resize these rods and get them nice bearings and then I can control the squash that is on that bearing ok now this is all fixable as long as you don't go over limits yeah i don't like that again this is just my opinion yeah but see uh a bearing drop so I guess when we take number eight we probably won't see it see the buildup you can even see it inside the ring see how all the oil the oil drain is getting clogged yeah you can even see it around the center section of the rings and that is usually very good evidence of synthetic running its ok if you use quality conventional oil yes in regular old gears you dont see synthetic is like that and if when it gets very muddy its from different oils have been used all the time ok and again not too bad ok yea two sofa 22s cause you need the synthetic like they call for synthetic oil for the phasers but then you have long oil changes leading to sludge and other things, so we did it. a video from a long time ago oil is ch eap do more oil changes it all boils down to yes so this one has piston jets i think the 2nd and 3rd gen don't have it because ford thought they might save some money and don't use them and I don't think it's a problem like this I don't think it's a typical problem on a lot of these performance engines we also block them because it will actually create an imbalance in the engine it's ok because you have power you have weight in the engine you get any type of drag applications or race applications they put wind resistance pans on and are trying to keep that oil from getting to the piston that's more of a longevity on the manufacturer side say that again ford yeah design something for longevity try to keep it fresh huh but it doesn't necessarily always mean it's a good thing ford is well known for coming up with good ideas but not completing ideas my ford truck and i can go home i anywhere so something's going on there yeah oh man t I've never had that before where I can't get the crankshaft bearings out no so that was about to get tight so I wouldn't say it's an oil pump just because i have good faith in this front wheel drive oil.
Pumps now another common problem is aluminum bearings and aluminum bearings in synthetic oil. Aluminum bearings are smoother, yes. also yeah I'm not I wouldn't aim for the pump these pumps are almost foolproof I've never seen a pump fail ok um so it would be an oil problem either oil which is common because they burn oil , yeah every engine on synthetic oil burns well you see it a lot on lamborghini ferraris its standard practice you have to add oil I would say its probably just a high mileage aluminum bearing mix or granite oil , i bet i was burning oil i ran low yeah i think thats what happened yeah thats stuck oh there we go there you go i never seen them this stuck before yeah look all the yes look at it see yes see the top of the bearing starting going out yeah so she was around yeah so I like it and you see it right there there's a couple different situations that are there huh I'd be more focused on it being the aluminum bearing and getting hit on it possibly sticking No oil, huh, just lack of maintenance I lie it was part of the f-150 so it was probably stolen yeah yeah I like this you can see the stuff hanging over the rim there it's a steel ford crank funny thing is the aluminum bearings when they start to tighten and turn it's almost like a lubricating surface until it gets too hot and then once it gets to that weird temperature I think it's around 515 or something like that, they'll actually wear down the crank.
I see many times when pistons overheat that the piston actually wears out. the piston n pin and the piston is a forged piston it shouldn't be like that aluminum right when it gets to near boiling temp yes it gets very hard and then we'll pull a crank out oh there's a chunk in the bottom of the gun , yeah I'll give you a bit of a transfer here as well okay so these are six main bolts so you have one two three times two but these are much larger than a ls large flat washer on the side in comparison with a little eight millimeter bolt or whatever now let's look at the out of circle which is what you could forgive this guy for running out of oil if he started burning like crazy well we'll get started we get started from the direction of rotation or thrust so we've got a zero we've got about a half a thousand but that's at the top of the rides for rain rides so we're at the top and then we'll go down at the bottom , but that could be a little muddy in the bottom so i'll go a little higher so we're at our almost zero zero zero zero it's about a thousand outer round but i wouldn't consider that unacceptable that might be a little conscious of piss in the ring groove and also i just did a quick snap on the edge yeah what if this broke? that's just a little bit of mud on the bottom so you get about half with the bottom there but that could also be the damage when you get hit like this it can really warp so it's at zero that way , so it's half you're tight there zero a couple of tenths tight so it's really not horrible I wouldn't say that had anything to do with any kind of oil burning and stuff okay these pistons when they start to get hot they will fit that cylinder pretty quickly yeah yeah and i'm sure you probably got your feedback but this is a sun gauge and give more.
I see a lot of comments about the green and red indicators here, but that's industry standard. I don't know what's there like small until just like you have to fuck those guys so comparable to the five threes I'd say the five threes of their time or even the 60's. It's definitely a very well designed engine keep in mind the timing variable and stuff but it all has to do with a coyote it's like twice the cost of an ls yeah that's the downside that's why a lot more people are doing the ls than they are like you said if you put same amount of money on an ls than to jump like you do as a coyote you get more with an ls because everything is so much cheaper and there is a lot more support than with coyotes other than blowers and stuff for mustangs but Money aside if you put the same components in these engines as you know since your ls engine your lt engine will be 10 times further ahead than this now I have nothing against Chevy huh they are a great engine , but they are still old tech pushrod engines, yes. they make great power they are cheap to make power um but this is the way of the future yeah and the cool thing is now that we've been around for a decade now that they're starting to become available and you see motors like this and all that yeah so if you guys, um, I really don't have any plans for this engine.
We are not going to put this in our project. We want to go find a bronco, but the borders are closed and everything is rotten around here.
