peaks

bike park we are actually hanging out by the

slalom

course

dual

and that's how we're going to start. here today we have men's and women's round eights and a beautiful course the team here at sun

peaks

has absolutely delivered an amazing course we're going to talk a lot more about here in a minute a total equalizer we're seeing a lot of different riders choosing different bikes but thank you joining us mountain bike racing fans i'm your host cam mccall and i'm joined by alan cook here we are going to break down all the racing action for you on the

sun peaks and we already had a great race today and the stage is set with a round of eight for the men and the round of eight for the women yeah some super good racing in the round of 16 this morning you know the course is starting to dry it rained a little bit it's fall weather all the time and you know this ride is devilish today we have some ruts we have some flat off incline switchbacks it will really test the l he cyclists and their choice of bike is really going to be a thinker's game today is a great time to be in the peaks of the sun re the kind you think you know summer in bc you're talking about dust you're expecting some rain it rained like you said and the trails are absolutely immaculate a little muddy on the course for early practice yesterday but now the courses dried up they had the tiger torches laying around and actually you know you've been calling it the equalizer this course here because We have some bumpy berms, but we are looking at some very interesting bike options. we're seeing everything from a typical small short travel slalom bike to long travel trail bikes and even some downhill bikes but a beautiful day for racing here today not raining like yesterday the sun is out and the setting is ready for some awesome dual slalom racing so we talked a bit about this course and if you don't believe me let's hop on board to check out our course preview here at

specialized

dual slalom sun peaks check it out i'm Keolani Hines and me. m do and this is a preview of a solemn specialized dual course here at Sun Peak and that was a preview of a small specialized slalom course here on some peak no omg so rhythmic sections berms very very steep flat corners and grooves this course has it all what do you do? from this track there, alan, yeah, i mean, like we were saying, you know he hit the equalizer, he's going to call on all the skills and talents, some of the things that are maybe out of the ordinary for these riders on a track of slalom there's actually a couple break zones where you need to get into some stuff on that stall pad you know if you go too fast you're going to land flat and lose your momentum so the riders will break in there and I think which is out of turn four, there's actually a place in the middle of the course where they really have to hit the pedals to keep their momentum going along the track, so it's really going to require you to know how to corner accurately on the In the background there's going to be strong pedals, smart braking, it's really going to take everyone all they've got, so a deep international field here for our races today, some big names on the quality list that e we were reviewing this morning, then the round. 16 just finished a few moments ago.

Let's take a look at how it went. It was quite a heated race to be able to cut our field in half and split it into our rounds of eight. here number eight number nine qualifiers cami nagara taking on robin thugs kevin de gara just got a big win at the proving ground a free ride competition first to field a female category she races that bike downhill that's what she's on it's been all this month and robin thugs remember innsbruck she was back freaking out and uh cammy deniera move on to round eight now emmy land emmy land another fresh new name on our list here's something interesting to see what we got we got many established veterans, but plenty of riders on our list that this is their first dual slalom in a crank work event.

Yes, this is the first dual emmy salon. to have a little more rolling resistance, a little more traction, it's going to be a little harder to get the acceleration to work, but she's making it work and she's going into the round eight, so through the verb pico was our number one qualifier keolani hines was our number two and that's who's going to take on number one and two let's turn things over to the men bass van steenberg in our number one qualifier who will take on 16 seed mikey hatteran yeah baz just looking for the point for this race you know he came in with a little bit of a different mindset than he had with some of the others he's not trying to be flashy you know he's just trying to hit his goals and get things done and I think that's what it's going to take on a crawl like this is our first bass spike of the day.
replay specialized dual slalom sun peaks
It's always nice to be able to look at your number one qualifier and just see if they're on another level visually from the rest of the field. Mikey keeping them honest right there, but it's not a huge surprise. like bass van steinberg and move on to the round of eight and then when we look at our brackets we always think well we have a collision course between our number one qualifier and our number two qualifier in this case number two qualifier thomas slavic take look, yeah, it looks good halfway through, you see the competitor there has a big body bag hit there, he just lost a little bit of traction coming out of that turn and really smacked him into the ground. he will also be moving on to the round of eight so dylan crane was the david looking to take out the goliath there but slavic looks absolutely unstoppable there so it will be interesting to see how our groups do there we are going with good sportsmanship.
replay specialized dual slalom sun peaks
Out here, the crank works double slalom. Will we see a collision course between bass fans Stephen Bergen and Tom The Slavic? like tegan cruz and garrett meacham taking 15 year old teams and getting to round eight could be pretty interesting and our groups are looking pretty good right now like i say a nice balance between some of those veterans you expect to see here and some of those rising stars are looking to make a name for themselves, yeah, I mean, it's such a fast track, it's so intense, you know, these young riders are coming in, they have nothing to lose, they have everything to prove and they're just doing it. everyone there on the line and you know, look how many bikers we've seen in the past kind of make their getaway to the slums.
I can think of Cody Kelly. tons of riders t really made their statement at this event so im really excited to see these young riders come through this event format is absolutely a favorite with many riders as you say its a springboard for new talent to launch their careers let's talk a little bit about the format for the dual slalom alright here we go jill solomon rule slalom it's all about head to head racing track racing two courses side by side head back switch tracks do it again fastest combined time advances easy very simple is that well you heard it right there from the horse's mouth I guess the cow's head you go side by side which you know you don't care about passing but it really affects you when you're shoulder to shoulder with the other cyclist he doesn't understand not at all when you see that other cyclist out of the corner of your eye and you're not sure if you're an inch ahead are they an inch and head really does let your attention really focus on the thing you have to do and on the track today with the ruts and the shadows and the various conditions it will take all of your concentration to get from top to bottom here we go we see Camina Garrett getting ready to jump in that gate let's see our brackets Alan yeah they look good we got number one qualifier via verbeek going against the new zealand grooms it's going to be really good that's a traditional slalom bike vs a slalom bike relegation and then we have brown and bainbridge smith our winner in innsbruck brain bird smith so this is going to be a good round so yeah harriet burbidge smith coming off of that big win in innsbruck looking to carry that momentum here here we go sorry robin goombs like this that robin goombs freaked out again in innsbruck and definitely opened the eyes of all the other women go wow look what we can do it's a big move right now p for the women's free ride but it's really cool to see robin here competing in double slalom also no jumps in the course here so it's all about speed she was able to knock out cammy naguera and get to this round eight, but he will take on your number one ranker via verb so its not an easy ride here ryder is ready the gate goes down such a big part of this race he walks out with an instant lead its a boyfriend picked up some space there in those first few ruts she's on that bike downhill so it's going to have a little more of a challenge to get that momentum there's that pedal place i was talking about vavaya looking flawless going through the last corner into the section flat ladies are earning their way here boyfriend keeping her honest so through the line first robin goombs 1.1 back so she just looks unbelievably strong what have bass and vai been doing in the offseason for pra to train obviously they've been uh they've been planning properly for this time the number one rankers at the time of men's and women's field to pu All that training for the test right now yeah yeah this is all. here hoping for a good winter maybe they try to get their bodies ready for next season so this is the series they're going to put it all out there there's a big difference in bike choice here harriet burbidge smith on the little bike , Casey. brown on the big bike what do you think is best for this course allen if you had to choose you know there are pros and cons to both a little bit better um you know it will have a little bit better acceleration you can see right there he walks out the door with a solid bike lead going into the first corner, but this is where oh bainbridge you can hear Casey, sportsmanship still on the road asking him if he's ok what's up? that's the same section we saw in our round of 16 highlight pack from another big crash there yes it's a tricky section so Casey will get the most benefit in round two and Harriet will have to work hard for Casey be ranked number five. harriet, qualifier number four, so obviously it's a pretty close match up there, but casey will have the ultimate advantage in the next round.
Let's take a look at what went wrong here for Harriet. shark fin you see the big shadow there it's very hard to judge where everything is what's a hole what's a pothole what's a shadow these are very technical technical conditions for a slalom course we've got good mics all along the course listen to casey right away they're ok yeah Casey's always the number one jock making sure her fellow riders are good so let's load our next heat on the door but check out some of the uh some of the options of bikes wanted here you know this is a slalom you don't usually see the grand max.
Know up front that 2.5 and anything from uh, you know, a really short 80-millimeter travel to what you normally see is you know the top end of suspension travel for slalom 120, but you know you just saw Casey with a 170 160 bike and you'll see more downhill bikes as we make our way through our brackets here as you see right now 2018 danielle b croft won the slalom at whistler riding the downhill bike and at the time that's a great story you never see anyone pick a downhill bike but i saw her yesterday pushing both bikes uphill so she had a choice she chose the downhill bike now shes going up against gracie hemp street yeah gracie ham street shes no stranger to the competition, bronze medal in the women's junior category This year's uci world champions stay honest these races are very, very competitive and also very similarin speed.
There's no real advantage, so they're going as hard as they can. every race on both sides going down these technical flats off bank turn the bike downhill crossing the line first beacroft has that downhill bike tuned for slalom shes making it work so we saw more problems on that same left hand corner that guy it ends in a little shark fin feature we saw dylan cranene go down in the round of 16 and we saw a crash in the last race and now look it's a challenge i mean it's almost like they're diving in the middle and at the risk of putting the front tire on top he was able to save it, yes Gracie made a small saving there he almost did the same as bainbridge with the front wheel going over the shark pin.
I think it's that shadow coming into the spin chamber. it's real riding yesterday just around sunset there was a lot of that as well as that sun right in your eyes and going from light to dark many times on this course can alter your perception that it's having that time of the season , you know, the days get shorter and the sun gets lower, so the shadows are keolani, your number two qualifier, we met her a little earlier, here's what she had to say. corner or just like muddy corners so it's always different and you can get out first but if you can't take a corner in slalom you're going to lose every time you know so I think I've gained a lot more confidence in the corners. in slalom and I like to try to do well in slalom so I think that's the biggest thing that has made a difference in my mountain biking so we've seen Keolani have such success on the crankworks world tour and one of the keys to success, I think. it's kind of identifying what she would perceive as some of her weaknesses and really working on them, so here, there, working on the turns and this course is a perfect place to put all that practice to the test. solid gate to take that early lead over a bike length into turn one you go through that problematic section very smooth the gate obviously important in any type of race like this but with the amount of corners you have here of all different types it's just a piece of the puzzle, yeah you can see Kalani using the perfect braking zone to get down and regain power comfortably up front looking out so Keilani Heinz crosses first there by 0.9 just under a second So Keilani looks strong obviously the whole package has to come together they have to get off to a good start they have to be strong in those corners but I would say on this course more than some we've seen in the past, there's a lot of tim Being in those corners is absolutely not there, you know, and then there's also the mental side of competing side by side, you know, trying to stay ahead of your competitor but without pushing too hard, some patience is really needed. there at the bottom you can see kyolani has no patience coming out of the gate strong its amazing to see these riders really become specialists and train and practice and build courses to be better riders and they are just elevating the sport in a event. at one point i don't know if it's the full red shorts on jersey but Kealone looks fast today you know she has a rider ahead of her on the list of qualities which is viverbeek you see her name at the top of the screen. and you see kelani hines at the bottom of the screen that's what we love to see in these racing forms in brackets we wonder if we'll see the number one and number two qualifier go against each other in the gold medal round . back approaching that time here runs one in the books there for round eight in womens field and also one to watch you can see brown and burbridge smith uh brown with the max max lead there so that's that bridge burned her had that incident where she fell on that shark fin where that shadow is really causing people problems you can see Casey pushing back up the hill that's another thing every run on this is pretty physical getting your bike uphill up is we're in the we're in the middle of a ski hill here so it's a long hike and these guys and gals are really trying to conserve their energy but really be ready to push it on the piste in the middle of a ski hill but also in the middle of a series you know what we got the king and queen of the crank work points down the line for absolutely every event here now and uh we love following that story check out a look at how all of this The general King and Queen series works out with a lot of racing over the next 10 days we'll be able to see three of the best bike parks in the world sun peaks today we'll work our way up to kicking horse and then wrap things up for crankworks bc 20 21 at silver star bike park but it's really interesting to see some of the best riders in the men's category for the king of overall crank works coming from the Slopestyle in Innsbruck which was a crazy show and many of those riders who you don't see competing in dual slalom so this is a great opportunity for some of these riders who showed up to do snatch work bc to inch their way up the leaderboard yeah sure I bet there are about half of the competitors that have that title of king and queen in mind and this is the first event of this series so you know it's a battle of attrition, definitely You could really overreact in the first event and you know put yourself in a hole so these riders are conserving but they are really pushing yeah so under van steenberg and if you remember Rotorua 2020 was on fire leading the overall points for the King of title Crank Works and then you know it all fell apart because we couldn't go on a normal world tour so he was around for the Cliff Crane Perk summer series in 2020 absolutely killed it there but now he's back here looking to pick up where he left off. he left in early 2020.
Something to also note Allen is that he got the win during the Crank Works summer series last year here in Sunny Slalom, yes. bazz is phenomenal on the slalom course you can see they are pedaling up and up you know he talks about the only time he will jump is if you can't roll if he can roll he will because he is taking momentum from the part back of every pothole and every uh obstacle out there look at that stretching his leader he's on fire today is going to be very hard to beat cam point eight four four van steenberg lead on that so i mean we like to cheer on bass because he's a good guy and always a favorite but also the chance to see this guy ride is something we never pass up just watch him over this barn wall here scrubbing then running absolutely every opportunity and like you said every time. there's a chance to speed up a down roller he's putting his tires on there yeah he's definitely got it figured out you can see when he leans into those flat corners really digging and hooking mchanna fresh out of his world cup retirement you know he's here all all after of that's cream in the top right he's having fun but our 5th place qualifier gets into this so you know don't count mick out you know when he's having fun he's fast so you know he qualified 5th today. finishing in a dual crank slalom works is six, so he's set to get to know himself better in slalom terms. the scene going up against brian lopes who is like a 16 year old in a slum when it comes to sea otters yeah i also remember those days going up against teammate here mick and breden really right next to each other they are very, very tight here going into that uphill section which is brutal let's see how they're going to go down on this key section here this flat turns it's pretty out of camber here it's hard to tell look at that using that experience look at it go man , mick is so good on the bike he has his body in the exact position his hips need to be and his eyes are pointed out of the turns before he's even in them you know i think i think he could have he definitely has potential to get in on those metal rounds today. i mean take a look at what's in front of him right now even though you know he looks great he's the number one ranked five number five but he's going to face the number one ranked in the round of four so that you know we're going to have to meet that number one qualifier eventually i could absolutely cut to the chase and mick maybe the oldest competitor here but we have the next tegan cruz our youngest competitor at the age of 16 you know he's fast and he's pumped and he's ready to go he knows he's got all eyes on him and now it's this chance to really blow that into the scene and make a statement so I'm really excited to see this run it's going to go against our buddy here, little red number six. qualifier this is going to be a great matchup usually we are talking about garrett as the youngster but we have teagan here 15 year old for at least another week and both drivers qualified very very high number three to tegan cruz and number six. for garrett so this is going to be very tight against the two youngsters pretty even early on looking very tight a little too aggressive yeah a little bit of oversteer from garrett out of the turn they're keeping it really tig ht man this is a good match teagan looks very smooth coming out of that turn he is back on the ground as fast as he can horsepower to the ground with a slight lead looks very smooth in those turns wow teagan cross finishing strong and i mean garrett meacham looked so fast and aggressive the whole race, how tall is this 15 year old boy?
He is really capable of handling that bike and putting it exactly where the speed is, yes both riders ride their more traditional slalom option. and in that race you could tell how quick and maneuverable they were, yeah we have to savor this

replay

because these two guys are very efficient on the bike and they put those wheels exactly where the sources of speed are. but with a slope style background made his debut at the crankworks slope style tour in innsbruck previously did well had a great run but not quite done racing yet this is where teagan really shines look down on these flat turns out from the cam you can see his outside foot all the way down getting the pressure and weight distributed on the side of the knobs so they can hook into turns really that's the way you get those turns drop your foot you get your center low gravity you hook the tires and tegan was doing it there perfect looks like he's using that long lanky body to his advantage put that weight in the right spot let's go keegan straight facing thomas slavic your number two qualifier these guys are no strangers to podium finishes in crankworx slalom both previous multiple winners slavic the winner in austria three months ago keegan with a slight lead lengthens a little there slavic back off going into these flat turns what's going to happen? either it's too close so close 0.003 come on come on now so Keegan's right with barely a lead that's basically the race didn't happen yeah we're going to be able to let him drag the race out and decide who stays.
In that round four, Keegan right there, just the body position on the bike really leaning over the stall wall was impressive. overall look at that finish this is what point zero zero three looks like and that's what slalom is all about right there tight races only one can go to the next round but check this out you gotta love that and about that jump Keegan did a little bit of time on the stall wall and slavic was able to recover a bit but then keegan on the last stretch went all the way so we can see our top qualifiers are sitting pretty well so there we go , the stage is set this is going to be pretty interesting here we're seeing strong strong strong driving from our top qualifiers which is to be expected but you know kind of like that drag race we'll see between Slavic and Wright you know a opportunity to shake things up a bit and uh s At the peak of shaking things up a bit it's been great I mean we miss being in Whistler because you know our classic traditional crank works but what an opportunity to get out here and you know how to put our tires on the different trails we have traveled.
I haven't ridden before and you know mountain biking is getting so big that new trails are springing up everywhere. I know you've been involved in quite an interesting initiative. Tell me something about it. digging for ground and that's what's specialized you know the efforts to defend the trails you know these trails don't just come out of nowhere they don't stay smooth on their own and we have lots and lots of new riders coming into the sport you know it's a kind of a joke at home i say mountain biking is america's new hobby but it's actually the world's new hobby so we can see here these are theseit's our guys the free rads do a lot of trail work and you know that's one of the things you have to think about is how these trails are built how can you play a role in maintaining these trails that you love and are really these people that are out there, you know them, you know them. trail bosses everywhere and usually these guys that you know have dedicated their lives 100 percent to building these trails and what soil digging really does is legitimize trail building as a real profession so these people don't have to give up their lives so we've got people on the payroll we've got landseeker ambassadors all over the world men and women who are really your champions you know those taste-making areas where the Mountain bike culture is rich and strong. and we can't just keep those areas up to date and ride great keep the trails safe but find a way to spread the wording and get the riders involved and keep these trails going and that's really who I am.
The search is after and I mean , aside from knowing what you're doing in terms of trail building, the most sustainable way to build a trail network is to really have the people who are going to ride it put in the time tlc because uh, they have a vested interest, you know? So it's great to see you guys are trying so hard and you know we can never have too many trails that are so good for you that we can't have enough slalom runs either so let's get back to the action. here from the beautiful peaks of the sun bc near kamloops if you are planning a road trip bc you should do exactly what we are doing start at the peaks of the sun go kicking horse see silver star great time of year to do it right now we am happy to be here we have our next series at the gate robin goombs from new zealand taking on your number one qualifier via verbeek no that's good so she's chilling there at the gate she knows she has the upper hand she just has to hold her up Stay calm, keep the gooms right there in your crosshairs, make sure you don't stray too far from my solid door.
These are also practice runs. If you have that advantage, you know you have to keep up the momentum. get loose just because you have an advantage that's not the way these girls are going to do it you know these men and women are going to push the limits every race because it's really a building you know and the last race needs to be the most fast not only is robin goombs rocking the bike downhill but he was with his foot in that right hander yeah that thing on there is pretty messy taking all the vibrations off the bike yeah yeah i easily threw that round, one segue is in hot pursuit here. going in this gets pretty loose foot out don't hit the brakes kick out i love going into this she kept her honest to the end coming to the finish line here you can see she wins but it's not going to be enough to move forward yes i saw one playing her cards pretty pretty crafty you know to do exactly what she needs to to get to the next round but it also saves some energy because you never know who she's up against next round it will be casey brown it will be harriet burbidge smith another little info on some bike setups here 150 psi in that fork a couple clicks a rebound a couple clicks compression and boom thats your setup for casey brown right now rocking that rockshox front fork now remember harriet fell into this first pairing so she have the full amount to make up the 1.2 let's get bigger go one point five excuse me harriet strong gate this is go bigger g rande go home you just gotta drop it all on the line casey just gotta stay smooth and keep her right there in your crosshairs harriet gonna drop it all on the track right here fast over the barn wall but casey just keeps her and stays in front you know like she's saying she's not going to let you I don't want I don't want to slow down I just want to keep building all day those instances are a little hard sometimes because you practice to get around the course as fast as possible then you're in that situation where one mistake can put everyone in the way out of the race when you have such a big lead you don't want to go too high to crash but you also can't go too slow , yeah it was a strong race between the two of you you know Casey was just a little too strong for harry to come back and get that 1.5 you can see he has the number 13 on his bike with the number plate upside down no was enough to get the juju bad the number 13 might have caught her so casey putting that long travel bike to use on those flat corners yeah its going to get a little more small bump compliance on that longer travel bike long the 29er wheels are going to soak up those bumps a little bit and that translates to better traction on those flats turn down that bottom grassy area so casey how are you doing looking good out there on the slash i knew you were trying to deciding which bike to ride do you feel like you made the right choice seems to be working out pretty well for you yes cam i think i made the right choice on this bike it's nice it was pretty wet yesterday and uh coming in today i thought i'd keep the one Same bike and have some more grippy tires so it's been really good if it ain't broke don't fix it looks like you'll be facing buy next round so best of luck let's see if you can knock it out rla and just take down that number one ranker right on the thank you cam go get it casey thank you so much yeah that's always interesting to you. you know you make it and you're like it's a total mix up who you're up against when you see the number one qualifier go boy here we go yeah you know the adrenaline is high so you know them.
Qualifying those qualifying times and seeding, you know it's all 'It's a glimpse of what you're going to see, but once it's time for the race, it's really any of these, any of these girls wins, yeah, more pressure to as we work our way through these brackets here we're going to find out who's going to make it in the round of four here daniel b croft with the 1.2 lead over gracie hemp street you hear those voices when you go too don't you, the you listen, you hear your rider beside you, you see them out of the corner of your eye. there are a lot of things on the track that can affect you and help you go faster you just have to stay focused stay focused and gracie is doing it right now she has an advantage see if she can last until the end and win but yeah but here comes b croft back to ella gracie need more than a second here i don't feel like we're not enough for gracie hemp street danielle b croft cruising to the next bracket on that downhill bike reminiscent of what we saw her doing 2018 at whistler another instance of if she's not i know Broke don't fix it hey the little slalom bike is a downhill bike if you're danielle b croft yeah a little veteran move there saving some energy towards the end she could tell how far Gracie was so that he didn't. let her stray too far that was a perfectly executed first round so Keilani Heinzer the number two qualifier chose to go for Max's dissector 26psi in the front the fiery in the back 28 you normally see that if you're a mountain biker, you know? this is the kind of way we execute it well allen you put a little less pressure on the front than on the back yeah yeah of course usually you know a good rule of thumb is two two difference psi front and rear you know? you have a little more weight on the rear tire so you know you need to have a little more psi in there and by having that front end just two psi softer you're going to get a lot more traction and be able to control your steering a lot better than a kind of tire gauge or a pinch with a guy's thumb, i feel my tire gauges cracking or the battery dies.
I'm more of a handshake guy. Trust the thumb, it's fine. crank works slalom its getting a great intro kyolani a veteran of the sport looks so smooth and so fast than red ferrari kit and bike right? She just looks fast on the track but she really goes absolutely fast today so she does exactly what we would expect her to do she's going up against danielle b croft in round four so let's look back just savor how Keolani Heinz he's on point on the bike right now and it's like you're a cyclist, you know that. feeling when you're just having a good day and everything your brain tells your body to do sends that message to the bike and i feel like that's where we are with key lonnie hans she doesn't just look good because she wears that shiny red Looking fast the cops are gonna turn their heads they see her go by in a bright red car like that really she's just putting the bike exactly where it needs to be and it's all that training you know the long gap between Innsbruck and now and you can look who's been doing their job yeah sure accurate will be the name of the game here looking at the group of women we've got cam so through your number one qualifier taking on casey brown danielle b croft on the downhill bike facing Keolani Heinz your number two qualifier so we say goodbye to Burbage Smith and obviously that will change the overall points as well so let's see if our four here can capitalize on this opportunity just so you know everyone is happy to be out on the road you know there is so much uncertainty these days but when you find yourself in one of the best bike parks in the world rubbing shoulders with your best friends and racing its something everyone they dream all year, yeah me I mean there's definitely a good feeling on the hill.
I was there during the round of 16 and you all know, the camaraderie and everyone having fun and it's late in the season. We're starting this series to get everyone relaxed and excited, but I can definitely see the pressure building as we get a little bit further into this road trip, so we talked about this course, you know really, uh, it's a standout on tour in right now and take a look at some of the times so the fastest time of the day right there bass van stedenburgen was the fastest downhill 24.7 it's kind of a classic length for a slalom course you know it's the sprint when we talk about all the different disciplines we have here at the crankworks world tour dual slalom is the way we always start and start with the sprint we work on some crazier disciplines as we go but this is the one we personifies m mountain biking is the most important and it's a great spectator event here too, I can't wait until we can really fill this field with spectators in the future abs ollutely so bass van steenbergen with a point eight over nils bensync baz looks so strong he's out the door he doesn't stop pedaling until on the first turn he manages to put the power down on all four rollers so he knows ben sings close is just right there really cool I mean it's ahead this gap isn't that much it's all going to come down to this flat corner section so note that point eight is the deferential look to Bensink like one point five wow just a three tenths of being able to knock out his number one qualifier but bass van steenbergen cutting a little too close right there yeah he turned it off a bit and was going to ask was he that good or did he get a little lucky right there that was awesome no Is there any way anyone can visually tell three-tenths of a second, so watch him pedal. he doesn't take the pedals off from the first pedal until he's already leaned forward into the turn, he just has all the power down and like he's, you know, like I was saying before he's pedaling or pumping, he's just trying to stay as efficient as possible and had to catch up a bit here look how quiet and ambulatory it is but then it shuts off a bit early and bensync almost takes advantage of that by pushing through the line so that's the tire front of the rider the one where the lightning breaks and that's when time stands still that's why you see them hanging off the back as they cross the line and ben synchro is almost there the bass looks great on the bike today obviously number one qualifier everything going in your favor but that was a bit.
Too close for comfort? Did you get a little worried right when you were crossing the finish line and he was right next to you? Yeah, that was really dumb. I like to navigate the flat corners to be safe and then I saw him walking away like oh that's maybe a little close but I'm glad it worked out that would have been oh that would have been horrible if he had gone his way yeah we ain't ready to see you hanging ready for the day you bastard number one qualifier still got some work to do so way to go point three was too tight but we'll see you there for the next race sounds good thanks cam so here we go it's fun to beable to throw the headphones at him and talk to him right after that you know it's good he wasn't comfortable with that yeah he answered the question there he got a bit lucky there so here we go Joe Breeden following Mick Hannah for just point one So teammates you know you know at least one of them will make it to the next round but you gotta say goodbye to somebody mckenna your number one five qualifier here today. world champions as a kid he's no stranger to this kind of riding he's got to make up for his breath a little bit it keeps him honest this will be another tight absolutely we're getting into the fun ones ya keep point one in mind this is where Mick shines in these very precise flat turns oh ok what is going to be point one but what was it again was point one what we are going to have to really oh my point zero zero three again that is the second point zero zero three split combo is fine big hannah steps up and you know you have to prove that prowess on flat turns down there you know if he was solo you know the slightest mistake on those flat turns Breeden was so on fire with the momentum of that left outside berm. mick pushed the front end out trying to stop that beam just in time so what did point zero zero three that three thousand is what we're talking about yeah that's one time that's the second second like that en I'm already producing some amazing runs so looking forward to starting work on our way to support here talking about support let's see the bass van scene breaking up with Mick Hannah that's going to be good now that we get here , we have Teagan Cruz. and garrett meacham the youngsters i remember correctly they had a pretty tight match there teagan cruz swinging the pike up front 80 psi on that fork it's kind of funny you can see his rebound is doing nine clicks minus three on high speed compression minus six on high speed compression low speed so if he has the same fork maybe he can just steal his setup there for his next local race it's obviously working well for the youngster he's the number three qualifier here today and he's facing garrett meacham number six qualifier garrett with the five point to offset teagan with the lead taking full shot watch garrett catch again another good run oh higgins in trouble he's going to have to drop a heater down right here watch him pedaling like crazy oh he's back he's back like this he's not it's not over for tegan here he comes he's back with him he needs to calm down reach the finish line oh my god look what e we were talking about point five it's point two so it's not enough for garet meacham but wow teagan cruz really fought back it's like when aggression bites you you want to be aggressive but there's a certain point that comes out of that left corner tegan cruz was so aggressive he actually lost speed after making that mistake here we go the amount of speed he was doing and we instantly look at the pedals he's not going to stop bobbing his head all the way down the track the rest of the way to even get to pedaling in those flat off camera turns there every little element matters you see tegan teams undo click there and you know it played in his favor when he was trying to chop wood and get back up to speed after that little mistake being able to pull the pedals and push down, but really just the precision needed in dual slalom is something veterans have on their minds.
We spoke to Tom Slavik about that. Listen during the race. all the time you're never able to set up a first race run like you do in finals, you balance against your own limits and the limits of the bike and once it becomes more and more important you start to cross that border. the tracks are like 25 seconds there is no room for mistakes if you are not precise you can't be a faster slalom racer talk about you know the precision involved and the track is about 25 seconds but as this race gets gets hotter and hotter. you're seeing those lap times go down, we saw that 24 seconds was the fastest time of the day so far and you're up against someone like Keegan Wright, you're going to have to do everything you can to get Thomas Slavic to be the number two qualifier. up a Gainst Keegan Wright, the number 10 qualifier.
Keegan is doing a good job of getting this far now after that 10-place qualifier and can take out Slavic right now. He has a 3,000 advantage here. You need a flawless career. awesome i mean this has been a final a couple of times this is going to be a good race from start to finish neither rider is trying to give an inch pushing to the limit sloppy very soft over the stall wall so that Slavic knows. If he crosses the finish line first, it's clear he only makes only three thousandths necessary, puts 1.2 on keegan right and moves into round four, so tegan cruz does what he has to do to back up that fantastic ranking. result number three qualifier will take on number two qualifier cruz and slavic and then bass van steenbergen doing his job sneaking around but he will have to face vet mick hannah so i like what we have here you know we have our stories playing from our number one qualifier number two qualifier still in the game but we have our veteran in the form of mick hannah and then our rookie in the form of teak and cross with equal opportunities to really turn things around and take the win here , yeah, the matchup between Slavic and Cruz is going to be really good, you know, veteran vs. rookie, you know they're both incredibly talented individuals, they're going to risk it all, I mean all of this.
The matchups have been so good so far that I'm looking forward to that one. You know you could see Tegan when he made that mistake in the last race. He knows that he can see and feel the opportunity in front of him. he wasn't going to let that slide at the time he made that mistake he hit the pedals again and gave it a 100 all the way and if he hadn't he wouldn't have made it so that's the thing it's like in a a young career like that is how you deal with opportunity. If you stumble and right now I think he's doing a really good job, it's like this is my time to light the fuse whereas for some of the veterans it might just be another race, but with that track record of a young rider like tegan cruz, the younger brother of lucas cruz, who was a complete fixture on the circuit last year when we were doing our other bike bc uh crankworks tour the cliff crank work lucas summer series Cruz was a name we talked about a lot, so when I saw a cruise ship on the quality list, I think that's the wrong first initial, but there's more, this family is generating talent, but as you say, you can't take these opportunities let it slide because this might be the time you can take take out those big giants so if you're enjoying what you're seeing here and you're worried because we're getting close to the final rounds and you don't want the wackos ending up for the day, just go and grab that laptop. phone go to crankworx.com we have a lot more i have schedules of upcoming events because as we talked about today this is just the beginning of our bc crankworks 2021 road trip you also know if you're a big crankworks fan you want get some merch you can do it on the crankworx.com website also if you're curious about the overall point ranking we've got king and queen of crank jobs jumpsuits go to crankworx.com to get your fix because I know you know that we're lucky to be here when the broadcast is over let's go find our fix let's get let's get on that chairlift won't we yeah as long as I can fix my tire well speaking of what Max tires help us? making it all happen here a lot of the riders roll and the max tire is so big thanks to the maxis check out hey im basting steam breaking im byavravik ah this is kilani high systema slaving is my maxis tire look what i run for this slalom race it's a minion dhf and dhf on the rear also excited to go for dhr2 because i know it's a rear tire but i also use it on the front because it works great for me.
Here I have a dissector in the front and an arden in the rear. a 2.4 and its a 26 inch tire 30psi in the front 34psi in the rear 24 in the front for tire pressure and 26 in the rear these tires have always run to this peak and i feel super trusted them and this was my max's tire review big thanks to max's because you know you support the events and get the riders out here to absolutely rock the leaderboards alot of the best riders race maxis and if you are uh if you're a recreational mountain biker maybe race those local races lots of cool bike setup facts to learn from that little feature right there yeah absolutely some amazing little details in there actually so this will be well via verbeek no stranger to the train here at sun peak it was ripping up the cliff cr ank work summer series just a year ago now casey brown yeah its b ien ryder random start ready riders look at the game the stakes are high here for ever beat casey brown last year via took the win at sun peaks casey third casey aces turning right there where we've seen some riders having trouble, so she's right there she's on it look at casey yeah this is gonna go down the line no one lets it go easy look at casey she really speeds off that little mistake casey looked like maybe she got a hair out and had to have her brakes checked a bit but man it's definitely going to keep her in place she's not out of it at all with a 0.5 lead I feel like I feel like off camera it's a little more challenging on the left side of the rider, there's a roll after the first gate, so that's potentially where Casey lost that speed. the skinny ground k she was a little wide in the tournament yeah you had to check so that was one of the more technical parts of that section the flat turns out of camber is when you come in you have this little decompression so that you actually lose weight. traction going into the slipperiest part of the track yeah obviously he lost about half a second there but he really did a great job of not missing the next gate yeah that would have been a max 1.5 which I think would have been a little.
It's hard to pick up our number one qualifier by more than b yes it's worth checking to take those five because missing that gate is not something you want to have to deal with when you get back to the beginning of the course which is where we are right now with danielle b croft on the downhill taking on his number two qualifier keolani hines kyolani using that smaller bike travel advantage coming out of the gate the beacroft is there keeping her honest his right riders are trading the lead back and forth from his neck and neck great soundtrack side here im trying to hear the changes and all there we go daniel b croft crossing the line first by .19 so there we go keolani heinz has some work to do and i mean thats a we would expect make it a tight matchup right there with qualifier number three and qualifier number two.
There is a lot of consistency from these two riders but very, very different bikes. setups but still racing so tight yeah I mean you can see you can see the tradeoffs of the bikes that really come into play as they go down the track you saw Keolani she came out of the gate real quick with that smaller, lighter bike, but then when the track got rough and traction was really important, Beecroft really sped up and that's where he had really gained that advantage on that last flat corner section, so between all the riders who compete in so m any different discipline here at the crankworks world tour seems to be very common is it for them to favor the double slalom bass fan scene breaking your number one qualifier loves double slalom we talked to him before the type of riding he bring the double slalom like I love good turns and rhythm sections and stuff like that, but there's also the aspect that you're racing against someone who makes you p grilling above what you thought was your limit and I don't think that's it.
It's possible to pull it off without having someone there, like sometimes you run in a slalom race and you're like a man, like you don't think you could get to that corner that fast and you never would have tried it if you weren't trying everything to beat this other one. person, you know, as you work your way through the day, the pressure mounts, the competitors get a little faster, and finally, you find yourself at the gate next to a legend, mick hannah, the number five qualifier who knows how to Act. i'm under pressure bass van sinberg and there's no air room here riders ready watch the gate both riders come out solidout of the gate this is going to be good jeez the amount of speed you carry through that bass van steenbergen shutdown section it's almost like you use pedaling as a throttle yeah just accelerate through each section of track hopping around the corner mick loses a little bit of attraction there he slipped and that will cost him point eight so mick is definitely not out of it with what we've seen of him today you know it took baz half to be super super on point on this next round to get to the finals well just like bass was talking at that feature there before he went down is when you have someone next to you it really affects the way you drive and mick hannah is not the guy you normally see make a mistake but he got bass van steinberg next to him dancing jumping to do these doors yeah just look what happened just going back to make sure they all went round the doors that was amazing how bazz is like he was to lose, but he jumped up and left the bike for her through the gate.
I like this angle let's see if we can see here so look up trusting the tires to hold their traction but absolutely pushing those tires to the limit you see baz appear over there I couldn't tell from that angle if the wheel front went inside the gate here we go oh no i think he's a clean man but that's close he was like he was going to miss him and he jumped in the air and moved his bike around him or something like a magic trick , let's see what the judges say, it was difficult, it's a decision, this could really change things if the rear tire definitely dodged it, but I don't know if the front did or not, that's a little nervous waiting to see what the judges will say judges ok let's take a look again ok we're looking at that white door baz van steenberg we're in the black let's see the front tire which side is it on ok it hasn't quite lined up with it , but it seems that it is inside, looks like he does something crazy with his elbows at the last second that's how accurate the rider is able to move his elbows and make sure that tire didn't go over the gate but I mean we're looking at a little monitor , we know our timing and scoring specialists will really use the magnifying glass on that yeah if that was on or off it was amazing the handling of the bike he was going to miss it and he did like a little whip about four inches off the ground to sort it out it's on alan i don't know i'm just going to check this out here it is so it's over it's definitely out there he picks up and then it seems to get just oh no he's the outsider come outside as i turned around drum roll drummer please, all the bass has to do right now is just smile and wonder. oh here we go we just heard on our headphones that he did the door so low van steinberg and we're going to see a big sigh of relief on his face right now once he realizes he's good very good I still can't believe that movement that we just witnessed like it has whiskers or something like you know what the cat is like. it doesn't hit the wall it's like the bass was so in tune with that bike because it's like a self-contained drone with 4k camera sensors it just moved its elbows to move it was awesome so if that's something you can even practice we've got to tegan cruz and thomas slavic at the gate the rookie oh wow the veteran check out our fastest times of the day things have gotten a little rowdy thomas slavic now has the fastest time of the day by only an inch so teagan cruz the 15-year-old for another week taking on thomas slavic from the czech republic this is a potential time to launch a career here slavic out the gate hard a couple of different styles there you saw slavic pedaling la the rollers and crews who just choose to pump efforts look pretty much the same right now that will give crews a slight advantage going into flat target oh he will find some speed ocity here, the slav is, oh, Teagan's mistake.
Both running backs are pushing errors coming from both running backs and kind of picking them up even at the end of Slavic with the 0.52 lead, but both Teagan and Slavic know their careers ended at one point, they know they both had incredible saves at throughout that. runs so let's take a look back I mean they were both pushing so much basically on the brink of error the whole time and one would have a little misstep and then the other would have a little misstep they're basically just trading back and forth back, but look at this tegan in that division who was ahead by about .15.
I think this is where Slavic has a bit of a problem. A little oversteer. He loses traction in the front, but he does everything he can. can stay online crazy save also there's a lot of uh there's a lot of slippery dirt no pat right there when you go offline it would be easy to just wash and the crews had about oh and the whole bike slid yeah the crews had about a half a bike length before that little mistake there where we fell just a fraction of a second back and ended up running a little bit wide, we haven't even talked too much about how it's going to change that home stretch from one lap to other.
The lap is also sure the ruts are going to dig a bit looking at the brackets so we have number one qualifier bass van steen bergen holding a slight 0.8 lead over mchanna and then thomas slavic almost half a second. ahead of teagan cruz let's switch gears to the women right here where we find ourselves in the exact same situation here the top runners are pitted against each other big dots on the line casey brown on the left side of the screen via the verb beak your number one qua lifier to the right via with the advantage that this is another race where the last last race uh both drivers made a couple of mistakes and came together at the end for a very tight one so that really is who it can be perfect with that precision.
I've been talking about today. Camera available. Half a second. The advantage that belongs through its peak. Casey looking incredibly smooth. You can see when he is jumping. He barely gets off the ground. He keeps his momentum going. pretty good right now so she'll have to she'll have to throw here oh she's going to be very close here point five to play casey brown for point four eight oh my god so close but not close enough your number one qualifier through the verb move another part in the next bracket wow crazy so good race good great effort from casey i mean you know on paper she's at a disadvantage on that bike but man she made it run all day and a you know we're going to see her back?
Although we're not done, we're a long way from making it through the number one verbal qualifier, moving toward that gold medal match. The big question is who will. I'm going to take on Casey Brown, but keeping her absolutely honest there and, you know, almost interrupting this whole final here for just a split second and you can see coming out of the barn wall through the saw, I was a little behind and that's everything. what slalom is all about you can see that competitor next to you and it really sparks things you don't know like what he was talking about baz and really pushed all the way to make sure he got it.
So through you and Bass absolutely leading the charge today, you've obviously been training hard, what's that process been like for you over the last two months? It has been really interesting. but i just had my own challenges t faced but im excited we are finally riding and honestly i was surprised to qualify first we were all really tight so everything is on the line here today its exciting and we are stuck it really was a near error right there. I don't know if she saw the times, but Casey was right. You were fully conscious as soon as she appeared.
I thought that seemed like 45 seconds too. Oh great you're moving on to the grand final so good luck there and uh can't wait to see who you're up against let's check this out thank you doing your job bass doing your job the number one qualifiers the field of men and women respectively and you know they're pretty close to home too so that has to play into things as well - a lot of these athletes flying in from abroad make things more difficult but also a bit of added pressure when racing at home You are expected to do well but they are definitely delivering and now we are looking at our next heat l ride up to the gate danielle b croft on that similar downhill bike setup that gave her the win in 2018 at Whistler and now kilani heinz ranked number two looking to get to that final against through ranked number one and if that happens that would be really interesting but you also know we're in there with danie lle b croft as the number three qualifier so no big surprises here in our final best riders delivering under pressure riders ready to see the game danielle with the 0.19 lead so kealana using that smaller and lighter bike to her advantage but then bcroff comes back with that bigger downhill bike which makes it work in his favor with traction and rolling resistance. didn't get too far ahead of her she ended up pulling out the win she'll move on so you know we're looking we're looking pretty good you know it's going to plan ed the fastest the fastest riders are going down the hill they're moving ahead let's move on to some pretty exciting endings so history tends to repeat itself, will that be the case? downhill bike you don't normally associate with dual slalom racing you're watching it make it to the final but you also know the fourth fastest time of the day but you know what it really comes down to who you're climbing against and how you play your cards and danielle b croft playing her cards right here against the number two qualifier i mean i'd say it's a surprise because of the downhill bike and you know she qualified lower than kielani but she's the third qualifier she's been strong all day absolutely and this is where the downhill bike comes in you know it's going to have a little bit softer suspension so you'll have a little bit more small bump compliance on the bike which will translate to traction and really going around to those corners without jumping on some of those smaller bikes so let's see if history repeats itself too i mean we talked about how last year here at sun peaks via won casey got third and we are seeing a similar scenario play out, but now we have Bass Van Steenbergen charging at the gate.
It's definitely not a shoe match that kept him honest in that first seat and you know he's going to want it. to go down with the fight if he is going to go down so point eight back is mick hannah behind bass van steenbergen is ready is a good chance for baz to come out get a good start get a good run build that confidence in the last round final what you want is to verify why you think you have it make a little mistake and lose confidence hannah good under pressure whats going to be the story here nick back for point eight wow the sounds were coming out of this racing field dude bad point that first straight it was awesome scrubbing in there from fast remember point eight mick with a nose right now but it will suffice it might be mick at point five barely out of that spread he needed to knock out our number one qualifier but bass did exactly what who woke up woke up this morning hoping he was going to make it and that's find himself in the gold medal match till baz holding it steady back there at the end look that's it I don't know if I don't know if he's checking or making a mistake but that was the same spot on the track and the same side of the track in the black where he almost lost it oh previous round, wow i mean hey there's something to be said for consistency but we're cutting it down here and that might be a little bit what you're talking about is that that track will develop and down at the bottom is where it will develop more, you know the grind the grass might be gone by now and we've got some wet slippery dirt ok look at this we're gonna go even slower on this watch when the bass loses traction with its tires just keep your eyes up accept the fact that those tires are going to skid and he's just banking on the fact that they'll hook up in time to make that next gate he's shaking his head here he did everything right it's so mick hannah and bass van steenbergen definitely represent the established veterans s we have guys like tegan cruz out there taking on the big dogs here is what he has to say about that scenario i started racing bmx when i was very young and then yeah i started racing pump track dual slalom and downhill and everything and it's cool to be able to do it all it's definitely a cool opportunity to be here with the greatest riders in the sport for sure and just um yeah all these amazing riders to watch and learn and now I'm racing withSame unless you're doing really big jumps and shifts that's the free rider talking on Casey Brown right there set it and forget it I don't know just run it a little stiffer than everybody else and just run it yeah I was chatting with her asking him if he knew what his prep was for this series here this little tour we're doing and she was like oh no prep you know goombs and I had like a four hour airlock session that almost pulled the somersault front end is like you know love love it being on the bike it's great to see that that's what happens and make it work here at the bronze medal round in contention if it ain't broke don't fix it casey brown loves the way the bike is rolling and has been serving her well all day now she has point zero six point zero four six to make up behind number two qualifier kelani heinz anyone's game here so casey will have to ride her pro clean race and stay super focused on the medal on the lane here this is where these riders have been squeezing here at the bottom let's see what happens what we have alan keolani a slight lead but here comes casey and aw casey misses a gate there well, she left it all on the hill you know you could see her front wheel she was starting to beat her but it was too much speed you know that's what Slavic was talking about only the line of traction in those lower corners is so good that you go to a hair change and you know that happens casey brown coming out swinging has to leave it all on the table but keolani heinz after a number two qualifying takes the bronze medal and some of those points for the overall yeah so look at casey she's coming full speed is a little high you see the rear wheel came off the ground a little bit four yeah and she went she just went wide just a little bit she could have gone into that with more veil than he's had all day, you can see his rear wheel coming off the ground right here, so he has to start that turn just a thousandth of a second later and you know 1000s of a second like Slavic said you're going to lose the gate if you're going to pick a time to push too hard miss a gate that's the right time there absolutely not like that's the last race of the day it might as well be hot so fourth place to casey brown third place is already determined there for women the young gun and the old dog but the old dog has some tricks doesn't he? has that advantage going into this very interesting race information here our bronze medal match for men one of these athletes will walk away with their first double hall medal at a crankworks event it will be young tegan cruz or vet mick hannah mccann over cross for point eight outside the gate mick ain't going to stop sitting in that point eight space at all he's going to push it all the way teagan will keep it honest let's see what teagan can do this is a chance for him he's in the world stage so cool with that shark fish oh mick he looks strong look at the patience mick what a race here we go mick hannah grabbing third place on that bronze medal but tegan cruz 100 percent tried. that he belongs here and that he is giving McCann a run for his money but the cool and collected vet rallied under pressure congratulations to Mick on that bronze medal yeah thumbs up Mick that was nice I was really excited to see him get there and get a medal and they get you, I'm really looking forward to seeing him progress not only throughout his career but we're just getting started on this tour so we might as well see him back up there oh yeah I'm sure that we will see it downhill as well.
I'm sure we'll talk about these two guys tomorrow, so here we go, we're giving away hardware, we've given away two bronze medals here, now, let's change the color of the metal, let's get down to business. essential gold and silver remain up for grabs for both women and men as we charge our best competitors back to the top of the course and really start this bc 2021 road trip off on the right foot as we love all festivals begin crank work dual slalom racing head to head some riders on downhill bikes some riders on trail bikes slalom specific rides and good sportsmanship across the board here as our final series for women hits the gate via the see number one qualifier beak dan bee croft number three qualifier you queen 2019 crank work the gate looking for her gold medal run look at this track has the third and fourth fastest times ok ryder random start rider ok ready look at the game with the advantage that really dark back corner i think it might be playing a bit of havoc in them choose your glasses lenses wisely today until the maximum moment with 0.3 to play with the highest ranked the day he can take home the gold the clock will determine what he does through the verb backing that number one ranking position and grabbing the gold medal yeah it was an amazing race at Avaya both drivers made a mistake but didn't get dazed they got back on the pedals and put the power down they were able to salvage a good race on both sides and keep it keep it a fair race. the road to the bottom so funny to hear they both make a mistake in the same section so here they come they really accelerate from that step to the tight left and both riders slide a bit off the beecroft shark to almost swerve somehow , come back, and then you see Vaya hitting the pedals again to make up that time. gates via verbeek leading the charge all day via congratulations on taking gold here starting your week off on the right foot the slalom has to be one of your favourites, but how bad are you looking forward to going down tomorrow?
I'm and it also aired downhill this afternoon like everything is so good some peaks offer the weather is good so honestly it's good times but Donnie and I were just talking about we have 10 days of racing ahead of us and that Sounds crazy yeah which one of these places are you the most? excited to ride them all deliver different things i think kicking horse was kinda scary kinda scary with rising psychosis as much as i love it im kinda scared about it but the sun spikes were i think the one i was most looking forward to is so fast which is so good Sun Peaks has been good the last two years so congratulations on taking the win and let's carry that momentum over to the next 10 days of racing, thank you all. come on we've delivered some hardware for the women's gold silver bronze field already determined now one more race for the men here and it all comes down to these similar scenarios we just saw for the women's number one qualifier turning it into the jokes about the gold medal showdown these races were a bit intense i would say more intense than the finals ok faster and black ok so to get back up to speed on what our differential is let's take a look to series number one between these two in our gold medal showdown bass fan steenbergen and thomas slavic slavic wear red yeah both riders are going to swap positions throughout this race check out their front wheels just pushing it all out all ing rolls off the track and right here baz was just three point ahead and you can see Slavic just bringing the horsepower down to the finish line coming in in this key section man i can watch these guys ride bikes all day huh unfortunately we only get to see them do one more race but this is what we show for this is the winner take all high pressure situation thomas slavic out of the czech republic on the left hand side of your screen gold medal and back up that number one qualifying result random start everyone on the line guys you have to be thinking about those last four spins point zero seven in favor of slav they are up and running wow that seems fake baz is just establishing power Both riders drop everything.
Look, that's the hardest thing I've ever seen. People are cycling up that hill, but Slavic is right there. No one has a flawless lead so far from these two riders. Bass knows that he needs to recover zero sev points. well come on here we go i think it will dot one better vancine bergen does it till the last moment takes the gold medal that was amazing that was exactly what baz needed to start this tour oh man that was too cool amazing race look at it double fist pump while still in the field this was a judged event we deduct points but that's ok that's how you like to see it go ya know like tight races no mistakes just drag race i can't even really find fault no mistakes between neither of those riders and uh i mean both that's their approach it's just a sprint look how hard baz pedals everywhere also slav when we see it in slow motion it looks like normal speed when they pedal again because these two guys have the ability just the rpm they're revving that was one of the things I've heard some of the riders talk about before is knowing when and where to shift another part of this course that was a bit of a differentiator but look at everything even the line was fully stretched man that was a good low slalom race congratulations you uh you had the pressure number one qualifying and they made you win it was not an easy ride it was than the toughest heat right there the final race against slavic for sure he's so fast I respect him a lot and he's always good so yeah I'm excited to get that and it was a sweet race so at the gate at the top for the last race you were a little bit behind and uh it was that it bothered your head honestly it may have even taken some of the pressure off you like the first race I was too tense so I shuddered at the gate and uh and then in the second round he was as is fine no matter what happens and have a good race and work top dog all day win that gold medal and some of those points and we can't wait to see him on the roster of start pair to the rest of the events. the week i'm sure you're going to be participating in almost everything right yeah yeah it's all going to be sweet we've got a race in like two hours so it's going to be twisty but hey this should be fun you can celebrate for another 25 seconds we'll leave it you've got that and then you go back to the work congratulations pass thanks cam that was a race alan cook that was an awesome race you know different bikes different different huh you know heritage in the sport we have new guys we have retired guys let's look at the bracket here and look how it all shook come on i mean everything could have been spoiled by the bass in heat number one of the quarterfinals he faced bensync and it was very very tight but you know what we saw is what we were expecting to see and we talked about it at the top of the show it's number one vs number two that was the case for the men's field with number one taking the gold but you know I can't wait to see this pe teagan's cruise character as we go through t the next 10 days of competition i think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg of that talent yeah definitely you know it's hit the scene i think it's official , you know, and being without medals, he will be hungry. in the rest of the events and that can do a lot for a cyclist is to be hungry, you know that it is almost better that he did not arrive alone at his first event to get on the podium as if he were hungry now and I think that we are going to see many exciting things of him for the rest of this tour we'll keep the story moving when we meet you tomorrow for the downhill of course you heard Bass say it a few moments ago there's more points on the line today so they're going up to the top of chair lift get some air going downhill we will have an updated king and queen leaderboard for you tomorrow when we pack things up for the descent at 12 o'clock local time but I would say we are up and running in this crank works bc 2021 we got abs definitely gotta thank everyone who made this possible camelback 7 mesh of course sun peaks resort sram rockshox maxis all the team or from the bike park here at sun peaks sean melnachuk for creating an amazing slalom course there cliff bar keeping everyone fed these long days of competition you know it's not easy to put on an event these days so we have our fans to thank sponsors until we're sad, you know, putting together the hard work to get it done and we have you to thank for joining us here. tip of the iceberg we've got a ton more heading downhill tomorrow thanks alan cook for joining me here in the booth and see you tomorrow at noon don't miss it oh you
