Renovating an Abandoned Mansion Part 14

Feb 22, 2020
A portion of this video is sponsored by Vistaprint. More on that later in the last episode of Leaving the Mansion I said if we got 200,000 likes I would put a baby on the roof, luckily we didn't get 200,000 likes. No ma'am, we don't need her love, I'll try one more time if we get 200,000 likes on this video. I'll make a baby on the roof. Hello, welcome to the renovation ranch. Another beautiful day at the

mansion

. It's 27 degrees up here with about 15 to 20 mile per hour winds, so it's a little chilly this morning. We were pouring concrete, so we have two porches in the back and then there was a huge hole between them and we thought it would be cool if that porch just connected all the Unfortunately, it's like 10 feet to the ground, so the guys built a base in the middle with trash bags and then they put rebar around it, which is really interesting for me to see because I thought to fill it, you fill it all up. of concrete, but that would be very expensive and they say no, you just fill it with dirt in the middle Concord on the outside so that your concrete is only I don't know eight inches thick or something like that around all the edges and then a a beam big one in the middle and then the rest on the inside, most of it is just base filler, just super cool, also cool to see how they made the rebars.

They cut holes in our existing porches to get the rebar through. then it will connect the porches together so there will be temperature changes, the two forces will not change independently of each other, which is great, so notice those little details, they are half full with the concrete at the moment, it is going very slow and because It is a pain to bring the trucks, we have three concrete trucks, but they had to bring a pump truck also to pump it up the hill. There is a lot happening today. I hope they are doing well. I hope it warms up. because with this wind and a little bit of cold this morning today we are working on a little more framing and then a little more green board.

More Interesting Facts About,

renovating an abandoned mansion part 14...

We're trying to finish that section of the front roof right. We still have to go and do that section of the roof. Also, okay, I better meet up with my friends before they fire me. Two days have passed and we are going to walk on our new porch for the first time. Step on. Annie, you're the first. How does this feel good? It's much better right, this is amazing, well you just got there, this was a weird little thing, how have you never seen that board? Yeah, this area is one of the last remaining rot spots and the reason we went ahead and filled all of this in and this was also open right to the ground, we're going to wall this off right here and make that

part

of the house because the they had

part

of the house upstairs there's a bathroom right there and then they just cut out here and they had stucco but there was no place for the water to seep in we're learning that it's not necessarily about keeping the water out I mean , it is, but what's even more important is letting out the water that does get in, so there's nowhere for the water to get out, so we sit there on top of the stucco and just rot that huge support board. from there, so let's take it out, replace it and have it get here.

I'm going to take this wall here and this is the kitchen here. Take this wall, take it out here and then all of this will be part of the kitchen and our wall will be here and it will go up. This is much better, mayor. like why wouldn't they have put a continuing porch there to begin with, that was going to be the entertaining porch, this wasn't going to be really usable, but now all this, when you have a party, a birthday party or a Christmas party , you name it, everything is usable. Also, we're going to take all this dirt and move it over here and make the garden just below the level of the porch instead of like 10 feet below it.

You can see there's an eight-foot ladder there and we've already put some up. The land there went down more and then kept falling here, so it's crazy that we also found out they stopped building. I didn't know it yet. They stopped building their house in 2005. They started in 2001. They stopped in 2005, so this thing sat untouched until six months ago, when we bought it. Meredith, we need to talk. We've owned this house for six months and we have some decisions we need to make, like some big decisions we've already made. we actually make these decisions we know the answer but we feel like we're finally ready to tell everyone we've just wanted to make this decision for a long time we've just been afraid of the decision do we turn around and sell or live happily ever after in this beautiful house?
Well, someday it could be beautiful with a beautiful view, which also piles of dirt don't help right now, pros and cons. Meredith, can you give me the pros and cons of flipping the house and selling it? I'll give them a professional, a lot of money, flip a house, a huge

mansion

on a hill and sell it, we bought it, as you saw, in terrible condition, so basically we buy all this land with the house just for the price of the land and then we put in a lot of kids who say, Oh, awesome, and then we put a lot of our own work and sweat into this house and hopefully one day it will be finished and we will have I made a profit on it, so in theory a pro is a big profit, yes you have some disadvantages.
That is, I don't want our children to grow the economy. We have images of our children as if they were playing with dirty moms. I'd be really sad if we didn't live here God, that's a crazy vision, it's so crazy it was a pretty good scam, he also turned around and sold all the pros and cons of living in it. I guess this is the same thing, although if they are quite the opposite advantages: we have this view every day, the disadvantages are that I really like that house, that's true, I really like it, we have no reason to leave our house, except we also think this is going to be amazing.
We have enough space, we don't really want more space. I can pee in the backyard which is awesome, we have a go kart course, ooh that's a scam, this is a hilly property and I thought there was no grass in this. property so I don't know if we're going to have a go kart course, yeah well we can have it on the ranch it'll be fine but it's nice to have people go karting in their backyard; Yes, it is a small field. price to pay I guess we have a beautiful giant oak tree and our front yard that I love and it has like a swing that's so nice it's like looking out the front window it's like six feet wide like it's a huge huge tree and there's no big oaks like that, there's the same type of tree that's a live oak right there, that one's seven feet tall, the one in our yard is like 40 feet tall and 780 to cross, that'll take that I mean, within a hundred years, mayor, that tree will be exactly what you're looking for, so okay, I'll check back in a hundred years, unless you know how I did, guys, see this madness?
Look at those girls on top of a mountain that's so cool I came here it's the moment when it all comes down and we weigh the pros and cons of both scenarios mara and I have decided to do what you all want us to do, that is true, everyone wants us to flip this house and move it and we're not doing it because you want us to, even though there are a million comments saying if they sell this house I'll give up, we're not doing it because you want us to, but we've decided like us. We are going to put a lot of effort into this house, it will be the house we want, it is everything to me, exactly how we choose it, there are many things we want to do and like as we make the decision to build it.
Yes, we wouldn't. It wouldn't be practical to do that if we were really flipping it and just know that everything will be built exactly how we want it, which will be great, so dark. Alicia, welcome home, this is, this is where I'll do it. I watch TV that's where the mayor will cook me bacon and eggs every morning for the rest of my life remember that's the living room and that's our bedroom and bathroom there's dad's room in Lincoln's room and a nice room This is our house This is the new militia headquarters Welcome home to the militia, come on in, isn't it surprising that you want to see the front of the house?
It's also amazing, so for those of you who have been watching this series since the beginning, you will know that this is all new to those. Those who are new here won't remember it, but there was this huge, strange thing that just hung in the air and it was a big empty hole, it made no sense, an ugly triangular box, something very strange and here were all the parapet walls , right there they just left. Up so you couldn't see the ceiling. There was the same. We have removed those roofs. This roof still needs to be finished.
This is the one that can be seen. That's what it will be like. Obviously we need to put the metal in. it has a roof, but it has a peak that will extend into a porch above it and then there will be a normal roof going down there, so we've tried to decorate the front a little bit so that it's not so boring and I think it will look very nice, obviously there will be a little bit of roof that's going to come off here and we'll change it a little bit and then do some stone and stucco and siding to bump it all up and make it look great yeah as you can see we're moving around the whole house with the zip boards, slowly closing this house and then we tape all the seams to keep the water out so everything makes its way around this concrete so everything is ready so now we can build studs to hold up that corner and it will be just a big corner that's going to be level with that going down to try to make this kind of joint because it was just floating there and being all It's weird, so now we have a little extension on our foundation to join all those things together.
Are you on the roof? Well, you're sitting on the roof. This seems a bit dangerous. Alright. I'll be back tomorrow to work on this mansion and I'll probably be there. I finished this and within a day or two This part of the video is sponsored by Vistaprint Vistaprint is a global e-commerce brand that makes it easy for small businesses around the world to promote their businesses with high-quality, affordable marketing products. Big thanks to Vistaprint for sponsoring this part of the video, holy cow, well, obviously we had a little leak in this house, okay, totally fine though, oh hell, I don't know if that thing up there is waterproof, the reason why the roof is leaking. down there it's because the roof up here is leaking oh wait there's no roof so last night's rain came straight from here to the second floor, to the first floor, well this house isn't going to fix itself are you too hot here? throwing firewood and that's not every second the wind starts blowing and it's cold again and apparently I threw my sweatshirt in a puddle, look at this, this is much better.
I know I've said this like five times, but why wouldn't they? I've done that to begin with, it makes a lot more sense to have it all be one big wraparound porch. I love it. I love it. That's great, so now this is what we're going to get into very soon. We were just waiting for that to be there, so soon let me show you what it will look like. I can show you because we already did the front one, so here's that little area in the front that was poured and you can see it went ahead and supported that corner of the floor above, so it has studs there held up with the zipper boards attached.
On the outside, it still needs to look like they put the flashing on it, but gosh, it's cool and now it looks like it was there. all the time even though that wasn't there a couple of days ago, and I want to address some concerns, a lot of people saw this and said, hey, your boards go directly to the bottom board, so water will seep in there, this inIt's actually how it's supposed to be. I can find a place to show you exactly what we're doing. Here's a good spot where you can see, so it's actually just a piece of treated board that we ripped to fit perfectly there so it's the exact depth of this and it goes a little bit below this footer here and the we place along the bottom all the way around and the reason is that it has the foam layer on the inside to insulate it a little bit, but that foam layer if we didn't have it In this case, the foam layer would be open to the environment right there, so we put a piece of treated wood in there and then we took that flash liquid and covered it all; we totally seal this piece of treated wood and we seal any gaps right there so that any water that may be on this wall running down will never touch our foam will never touch the non-waterproof layer this layer is completely waterproof obviously it's not so the water will never touch that and it will just run down and then this goes a little bit below our footer so the water should theoretically touch zero and realistically there isn't a ton of water that will even touch This is because you have to think that you have the rock, siding or stucco that is finished. the top of this, but sometimes the moisture will come through and you'll just let it drip a little bit and come out, we'll also have overhangs over everything so they'll always be sticking out, so you could get some rain if you're actually driving. and it hit our rock wall some of that might leak out but very little and if it does we have everything waterproof so it should run out and there will also be like a gap here I think it dries out on the wall which Matt Reisinger It always says that you want to keep as much water out as possible, but you also have to leave ways to let the water that comes in dry out, so you want it to breathe under that rock, which is interesting.
I didn't know. that, but I'm learning as we go, since the wall went there and went there and then we added that little bump, look what he did on the inside, he may or may not have left a little secret area, look at this thing, like this that there will be a straight wall, okay, here I'm thinking of some kind of secret door and then I can put all my, oh, all my good vibes there, not that one, okay, that's the end of the

abandoned

mansion video, like you. I can see it's moving forward, we're still fixing rotten things and putting zip boards on the outside of the house, so thank you all so much for watching us make this house our home.
Arrow I said it, thanks for all the support, thanks for liking and commenting and just being here in general, I'm encouraged that you guys are excited. I have this video, be careful, they are awake, they are very close.
