Real Wheels: There Goes A fire Truck, 60fps
Apr 30, 2023Thanks Kids love playing with
fire
truck
s, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a foreignfire
fighter? for the day so you and me are going to find out what it takes to be a firefighter and all about the great gear they wear so what do you say? We checked, most firefighters live at the fire station when they are on duty. when they're not putting out fires they have chores to do just like the rest of us, well you were asking me what it's like to be a firefighter, firefighter, Dave, well I'll tell you what it's like, it's probably the best job in the world.I have had various jobs and been with a fire service for about 15 years and I
real
ly enjoy it. We work 24 hour shifts. There are eight of us at our station, therefore we have to get along. This is my second family. I have a family back home and I have a family in the fire service ourreal
work day starts at eight o'clock we start doing what we call station and equipment maintenance every day we are responsible for maintaining the equipment maintaining the station mopping the cleaning the bathrooms washing the firetruck
s making sure all the equipment is ready because when you call 9-1-1 and we're not ready the whole system breaks down our Emergency Department what's the problem ma'am and your address is a house or an apartment and your name and what's your phone number Agatha, okay, get everyone out of the house and we'll send the fire department. when an emergency call comes in the firemen have to be ready for action foreign T ready you stay behind well it looks like the fireman Dave missed the fire truck I'll have to try to be faster next time the firefighters have to be especially equipped in the clothes they wear also to be safe when fighting fires this is the firefighter's cliff and it's going to tell us a little bit about the specialized clothing that firefighter Dave has to wear well let's start with the bottom of the outfit and we'll work our way up , okay, note that the boots he is wearing are steel toed rubber boots, they are to protect the feet of firefighters.Go into a burning building many times, there may be nails, glass or something like that. so it helps protect the feet from sharp objects and also the toes are steel in case something falls on them now the pants and jacket you are wearing are made of a material called Nomex now this is a fire retardant material which helps reduce flame or heat in the uniform now you wear your helmet too it's a hard plastic helps protect your head in case things fall out of the sky that kind of thing one thing you have to remember when you're inside a building at a fire even though we have all this good gear on it's kind of a false sense of security if you go into a burning building the temperature can get really really hot sometimes 1200 degrees with all this protective gear on you're not going i really feel all that heat that's why firefighters work in what we call the buddy system we go into a building together we protect each other if i see you're getting into trouble or maybe you're getting too close to the fire i can tap on you on your shoulder and you say come fireman's day let's go outside it's getting too dangerous that's why we wear the protective clothing you have on helmet pants coat boots and also our gloves help us do our job a a little better.
I guess we're ready to go fight a fire. I bet you're a foreigner. I guess I forgot to close the valve. I guess you'd like to see that again. in the fireman Dave is going to leave the firefighting in the hands of the real firefighters these big legs come off one by one to stabilize the fire truck so the big ladder can be put in the air thank you thank you once you are support legs are in place prevent truck from tipping over firefighters prepare to lift large ladder operator must ensure no dangerous electrical lines are in the way large ladder and basket can be lifted one hundred feet in The air thanks foreign but in the cabin it is very similar to that of a normal truck, except that there are many buttons and switches.
I asked one of the actual firefighters to show me how they work. a fire truck works pretty much the same as a normal truck. We have many additional buttons. However, I have to deal with it and I'll show you what some of those buttons do today. switch that turns all the red lights on at the same time uh I can turn those lights off individually if I want but one switch will turn them all on at the same time when I turn that switch on and then uh down here on the floor we have some buttons that if I push with my foot they will activate the siren and they will sound the siren and then here is another one for the air horn and then we have one more thing up here it is another type of siren so we have two and this siren is the electronic siren and we can turn it on just by flipping the switch here okay if you listen carefully you probably noticed that fire trucks have different types of sirens and they come from different places in the fire truck that has this machine three different sirens this here is the mechanical siren which is the main siren that you hear most of the time then here this is an electronic siren it sounds more like an ambulance siren which i also use occasionally now these are the air horns these are the big horns that go off to warn cars to move out of the way.
This is a fire truck and it is used to pump water. We did carry a couple of ladders though and this is how we storm and where we keep them. This is where the fireman is. he sits down and that's uh where he rides on his way to the fire and in this compartment we carry our jug of water and that's so that when we're fighting a fire we get a little dehydrated we can drink some water and we carry fuses and assorted tools and things in that compartment and then here we have what we call our engineers pump pedal and this is where all the gauges and valves are and things that we can make the water divert the water from one flush to another or open another valve to let the water come from the hydrant to the pump and here we carry extra air bottles and these are the same bottles we use in our breathing apparatus back here we have the motor that drives this motor makes it work and makes the pump work we also have the hose we have our hose four inch and there's enough hose here on this hose but to go from here about five blocks down the street and on that side we have a two and a half inch hose and there's enough hose there to go 12 football fields long and we use that hose to connect to a fire hydrant and then draw water from the hydrant to where the fire is.
This is what we call a monitor. This is what we use on large fires because a thousand can flow. gallons of water per minute we can move it to whichever side of the engine we want and it's so powerful it can knock down walls in these compartments here we keep our first aid supplies and use them because we go out a lot with people who have been hurt or are sick and this is basically what we need to take care of them one of the most dangerous jobs of being a firefighter is working on the bomb squat this is the vehicle that pulls the trailer that has the container that holds the bomb now this is where they put the bomb if they think it might explode this container is very very thick as you can see and it is shaped like a V so that if the bomb
goes
off it will explode in the air and not go to the sides where it can hurt people or be clothes that the bomb squad wears it is very interesting what you say let's take a look at that now this is what we call the self containment suit or a bomb techniciangoes
up to work on a suspicious Bond he has to have this suit on and as you can see down here on his boots he has this part of the suit for protect your feet very strongly right here this protects your legs go up and they're sort of like overalls this protects your body in case the bomb goes off now wear a jacket that covers this and what we'll do now we'll put the jacket on now this it's very very heavy that's fine and as you can see it fully protects him when you have this in the step right below here go ahead put your helmet on and you're ready to work on a device you're fully protected in case something happen, it seems that Spaceman fire boats are also used to fight some fires. they come in all shapes and sizes foreign foreign function is to transport men and heavy equipment to the scene of the fire does not carry water does not carry hose all equipment is used primarily for forced entry for salvage and overhaul operations now we'll get a little closer More I'll take a closer look We'll start by taking a look at the cabin That's why the captain and the engineer ride in the fire apparatus. The engineer is the person who drives and operates the unit. The captain, of course, is in charge of a crew in this particular team we have four men the captain an engineer and two firefighters the firefighters are coming back in this area this is known as a folding seat they see they are riding facing the rear we get a call on firefighter receives in the unit putting on his protective coat his pants his other gear and he's also putting on his breathing apparatus that way when we get to the scene of the fire he's ready to go to work he just has to get out of the unit and he's ready to go to particular compartment as you can see it has what appears to be a large fan which is exactly what it is it is a gasoline powered smoke ejector when we go into a building that is full of smoke we have to get out the smoke in order for the firefighter to come in and put out the fire we do it using these big fans we carry two of these in the outdoor unit this is the compartment that contains the levers that operate our Stabilizers and that raise and lower the side behind this sheet upstairs this is where we keep all our ladders all the ladders you see it just on the buttons we have all our ladders 16 20 feet and the big 40 foot one on this side another 16 another 20 and a 35 foot also in this compartment and they are a bit hard to see but if you look really closely here we have what we call pipe poles long poles with a hook on the end we use those poles to take down roofs inside a building if we need to get up to the attic area ok , now I'm in the unit basket as we told you earlier this is going to go 100 feet in the air you see this big red thing here that's a nozzle there's basically no difference between this nozzle and the nozzle you have at home on your hose from your garden the only difference is that this nozzle is a little bigger it works on the same principle we can flow maximum gallon thousand gallons per minute through this nozzle and all you have to do to operate it is just to turn it like this and get a wide pattern or you can get a very sharp defined pattern by turning this wheel we can rotate it from left to right by loosening it as you can see up and down this equipment is mainly used for large fires large buildings where we need to rise above the fire shoot water on them to literally smother the fire another important piece of equipment used to fight fires is the helicopter which assists with rescues moving equipment and can also transport small amounts of water overseas there are many different types of fire fighting vehicles this is an airport fire truck and as you can see not all fire fighting vehicles come in red this is one of the biggest fire fighting trucks it's yellow it's almost half a million dollars and it's for fighting some very special types of fires hi I'm Mike Strauss I work for the Ontario Airport Fire Department and today you are looking at one of the largest trucks in the fire service today, one particular vehicle is designed specifically for fire fighting in airports. that means if there's a plane crash, we'll go ahead and roll over and take this truck out and drop water on it specifically designed for airport firefighting and what we have here at the front are what we call two turrets and what are what they do it's just squirting water here and here and the top one is squirting water at a rate of about 1,200 gallons per minute and that's about 15 to 20 full tubs of water per minute and the bottom one is squirting at a slightly lower than about 500 gallons per minute and what also comes out of the water is what we call foam like if you take a bubble bath you have like foam on top of the water and that's what comes out of this too okay now we're inside the cabin and we use these headphones to be able to communicate with the tower, which tells it if there's a plane on the way or not, and to communicate with other firefighters and other fire trucks and inside the cabin which we control most of our firefighting fires with what we call joysticks and they're like a basic video game in your videos in your video stores or whatever and you can control most of your firefighting with theturrets that I showed you earlier by moving the joystick back and forth and it will spew water whichever way you turn it and everything here is basically just like driving a normal car you have the accelerator pedal and you have the brake pedal and then you have your gear switch the steering wheel and the horn different types of firefighters wear different types of protective gear as you can see i have a yellow color and you here at the airport where silver goes well they are basically designed for the same thing to protect you when you walk into a fire the reason the reason they're aluminized is to reflect heat a little bit more than standard Nomex firefighting and they're a little bit heavier they're aluminized suits so they're a little bit heavy and uh they can hold a little bit more of heat, they reflect a little bit more heat because it had a fire when it burns, it burns about 2000 degrees of fuel so it allows us a little bit more time to be able to fight the fire very closely and what we have here is basically same thing with pants and everyone has the normal firefighter boots and well here's a question for you Dave.
Do you know why firefighters have red suspenders? I have no idea how to lift them. There are pants. Alien Alien Alien takes a couple of steps in Alicia and yes, it's okay At this training center future firefighters are learning the skills they'll need to do their jobs properly and safely. there we go ontario med 131 will set up command in a three story industrial building we have smoke and flame showing all code three units this is a condition B fire my command post will be located in front of the building towards the west Truck 131, please come and take the utilities and ventilation.
We are laying a line. Experienced firefighters must also maintain their skills. This is a practice facility where they start the fires themselves and then practice putting them out. Even putting out practice fires is dangerous business. correct foreign statement we can make children not play with matches fire is our friend but it is also our enemy you do not want to mess with fire in any way lighters matches leave them in the hands of adults if you have a fire in your house leave your house saw how quickly this fire built up and intensified if you're a civilian inside a house we go in wearing protective clothing protective breathing apparatus can you see the temperatures i melted the shield on my helmet so that's the kind of temperature without these protective clothing i would die almost immediately leave the house go to a neighbor call the fire department from a neighbor's house call 9-1-1 in most areas, report the location of the fire do not hang up pick up the phone until a dispatcher tells you indicate, give us the description, the type of call, the type of buyer you have and if you can, upon our arrival, let us know if everyone is out of the house, you can have a meeting place where all family members can gather and say at the end of a driveway on the sidewalk something of that effect that helps us then we know if the father and mother are saying I have all my children outside we know it's just a structure fire with no lives threatened our firefighters don't have to take undue risk we don't want to hurt the firefighters we don't want to lose civilians oh hi let's be a little embarrassed this firefighting didn't really work out as firefighter Dave had planned even though he was just pretending, but they put me to work and told me if i do really well at this i can polish the truck tomorrow and remember kids fire is serious business don't play with fire thank you hi kids.
I'm Construction Foreman Dave I'm Firefighter Dave on Pie with Dave I'm Trucker Dave and I'm Trucker Becky I'm Engineer Dave I'm Helper Dave and I'm Helper Becky Join us as we explore all sorts of fun things and get into all kinds of problems live action video for kids get in on the action and collect the whole series here goes a plane we'll fly all kinds of planes this is one of the biggest planes in the foreign world there goes a fire truck let's see what what it takes to be a real firefighter firefighters have to be specially equipped in the clothes they wear too to be safe when fighting fires there is nothing like it in the whole world so get in on the action once in a while theres a bulldozer, we'll actually be driving some of the biggest machines in the world it's like a big shark's jaw what it does is it bites through rocks and then crushes them into smaller pieces so they can be recycled he told me not to touch one of these I shouldn't have done here goes a truck let's learn all about big trucks fuel goes into the engine explodes and drives the pistons up and down wait a minute this is you you're not supposed to pick me up wait he's hitched to me a train is going it's all on board for fun as you can see these engines are really big oh wow and there goes a police car we will learn all about police work and the neat gear they use so if they ready im ready let's live action video Go Fly is big, it's exciting and it's a lot of fun.
