Reaction To Chris Matthews' Shocking Retirement
after hosting the show for 22 years
Matthewsabruptly retired on air during hardball last night and he didn't even make it to the end of the show before handing it off to another anchor on MSNBC here is the abrupt farewell let me start with my headline tonight I'm retiring this is the last hard ball at MSNBC and obviously this isn't for lack of interest in politics as you can tell I've loved every minute of my 20 years as host of hardball every morning I read the papers and I'm gung ho to get to work not many people have had this privilege I love working with my producers and the discussions we have over how to report the news well after conversation with MSNBC I decided tonight will be my last hardball so let me tell you why the younger generation is out there ready to take the reins we see them in politics in the media and fighting for their causes they are improving the workplace we're talking here about better standards than we grew up with fair standards a lot of it has to do with how we talk to each other compliments on a woman's appearance that some men including me might have once incorrectly thought were okay we're never okay not then and certainly not today and for making such comments in the past I'm sorry I'm very proud of the work I've done here long before I went on television I worked for years in politics was a newspaper columnist and author I'm working on another book I'll continue to write and talk...
about politics and cheer on my producers and crew here in Washington in New York and my MSNBC colleagues they will continue to produce great journalism in the years ahead okay so he mentions this inappropriate treatment of women so there's a couple things here you've got a lot of flack for his questioning of Elizabeth Warren a week ago so a former employee of Michael Bloomberg said he had told her to kill her pregnancy for her career Elizabeth took him to task on that during the debate and here's
Chrisand Elizabeth's the exchange afterwards the former mayor of New York said that to a pregnant employee well pregnant employee sure said that he did why shouldn't I believe her you know I'm just really tired of this world this one is personal for me it really is person who did that what pregnancy discrimination is real and these we have gone on and on and on where people say oh I can't really believe the woman really why not and you believe he's lying I believe the woman you believe he's not telling the truth and why would he lie because just to protect himself yeah and why would she lie that's the question
Chriswhy do you try to make sure you're clear about this you're confident of your accusation look all I know is what she said and what he said and I've been on her end of the canvass sense of discrimination based on pregnancy then on Saturday GQ published an article from journalist Laura Bassett who also had issue with
she wrote in 2016 right before I had to go on his show and talk about the sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump
Matthewslooked over at me in the makeup chair next to him and said why haven't I fallen in love with you yet when I laughed nervously and said nothing he followed it up to the makeup artist saying keep putting makeup on her I'll fall in love with her another time he stood between me and the mirror and complimented the dress I was wearing for the segment you going out tonight he asked now there have been some questions questionable comments
chrisis made on air to female colleagues an NBC actually compensated the female producer in 1999 after she accused
Chrisof sexual harassment now some people are saying things also reached a boiling point when a couple weeks ago
Chriscompared Bernie Sanders rise over the past couple weeks to the rise of Nazism before World War two this night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940 and the general right now calls up Churchill and says it's over insurance is a hot cannon be you got the greatest army in Europe how could it be over he said it's over so I had that print suppressed feeling I can't be as wild as Carville but he is damn smart and I think he's damn right on this one so that was the comment I saw a couple weeks oh I really got people fired up like it wasn't aware of this whole inappropriate action towards women as well but it was a strange one for him all of a sudden quit...
because I wasn't hearing that call that much thorough obviously were some talk of people complaining but
Matthewsbut I realize it reached a fever pitch that he would go and quit on there because we've seen other anchors over the past couple years being hot water that they still like Bill Maher or even some of like the Fox News people like Tara Coulson or Linga Laura Ingraham like they haven't quit yeah it just seemed very like there's must be more to this story that well decided like no I'm done the Elizabeth Warren exchange I don't think had anything to do you were talking about it because it was a firey exchange on audio I don't think that had a lot to do with it I think that the narrative even though he wasn't calling Bernie Sanders and Nazi but that's the sort of that's the narrative is that he compared Bernie Sanders out to that that's a big one that's that's a hard one to get out from under and then the and then the GQ article but also what was said in the GQ article even though it was years ago even though it is completely inappropriate I don't know of saying why haven't I fall in love with you is a fireable offense this many years later so I don't know so I'm with you there there could be something else because this was not a
retirementno yeah oh this I know I know it's easy says that and that's sort of the narrative around this but this was in no way a
retirementand for him to do it...
without even finishing the show because the anger didn't know either but we've seen this before with people and I'm not saying that
Matthewshas a lot of you know darker stuff that is eventually going to come out but it started every one of these stories started with these smaller stories before something bigger drops and we this is the the idea with
Matthewsand you know doing it this way on air is the thing that we have not seen any of the other people the other people do but again allowing him to do this on air that was scripted it was in the teleprompter people knew this was going to happen so but allowing him to do this on air then tells me maybe there is nothing else because I don't know if you would let him write defend himself publicly like that and say goodbye right I think that you don't give somebody the benefit of that doubt and sort of let them go out that way if you are sitting on something else so I don't know what to make of this a couple of you will comment saying it gets great that you admitted it on the air Nelson says what a great guy to admit that yeah at least it says someone must have complained about him no just as Liz warned his bad ass it was I think that was so inappropriate to say things like that probably during a Warren thing I know it says it's baffling her that
Chrisis so ignorant but the killing up the pregnancy that is insane because everything to about this is like this is NBC so this is Matt Lauer...
they're still doing this oh so it might be that they have a much harder line it's just like yeah we're not going down this road again and we've seen this before and we've talked about this before and that is you don't necessarily have to firing somebody getting rid of somebody for cause is a very sort of vague thing you don't necessarily have to be Matt Lauer but we've seen this before and that is they may just not want this kind of heat right that you may have too much heat on them right now and he's too much of a conversation they're going into an election and they need ratings and they need people to be talking about their coverage and not talking about
