Rachel's Rocks Royal Mandala tutorial

Jun 20, 2021
Hello everyone, today we are going to make my real

mandala

s, everyone who came to my wedding went home with one of these as a wedding souvenir, our initials and wedding date were at the bottom to remind them of our day special. I make them in a variety of colors it is best to use a circular rock that is a bit flat they work best for making

mandala

s if you are doing a lot of them like I did for my wedding you can use a white spray base to start but today just I'm making one so I'm going to paint it white with acrylic paint and do it twice two coats you can use whatever colors your heart desires as you can see here I'm going to use teal and indigo blue.

I like to try three colors. We are also going to use gold acrylic paint, with that we are going to put our mandala design. You'll need some blending brushes or some ratty old brushes that are a little bushy at the ends for those that work best. mixing colors of paint, nothing fancy, there you go too I need a fine brush to outline. I don't go out and buy fancy fine brushes like this. In fact, I cut the bristles with scissors until I'm happy. I just use a regular liner brush and remove some of the bristles until I'm happy. with that it takes a bit of work as well but definitely go for it if you're not happy with the size of your liner brush now that i've done two coats i'm going to start at the bottom and work my way up.

I'm going to start with the purple color first and I'm just going to go all the way around the outside of the mandala. Don't worry about the bottom. The bottom never looks very good. We can go back and fix it once it's dry and correct your fabric with your name or your initials now once you've done the outside look at it from a top view and adjust the purple or whatever color you're using first to make sure it fits. look the way you want it on the mandala shelf. I'm moving on to my next color with a dry blending brush and that's the teal and I'm thru we're going to go over the edge of the purple so we can blend the purple and the blue now there's a sharp line between the two colors on this moment so we'll go back to the purple and go over the edge of the blue we just put in there try to work with it while it's wet it works best when the paint is wet if you let it dry you may have to alternate between the two colors until it blends right, we want it to be that way.

Transition almost like an airbrush, so it goes from one color to the next in a nice way once you're happy with that, go back to your teal or second color color that you're putting on your rock, make sure you don't have too much paint on your brush because it never blends properly when there's too much paint and I'm just stretching that blue towards the center a little bit more. i want that blue to stand out on this rock if you want any ideas on the colors or type of design you use on top check out my photos of my actual mandalas on instagram, facebook under

you can get all your ideas from there for these real mandalas the next color I'm using is an indigo so we're going with a dark Center I could use a bit of white to brighten the center once we get the indigo here now this indigo color is a glossy acrylic paint so it actually looks glossy even when dry you can use any type of paint you want to do the same as you did the first two colors you add your color then you go back to the teal and blend it with the blue and keep alternating back and forth until the color transition happens again it takes a lot of practice to get the smudge down technique to l to the right but once you do you'll be very happy here we go now I'm going to go back to the center where it's not completely covered you can see the white paint through there and I'm just giving it a nice layer of the indigo blue on the come on you can see all the colors now i'm just going to lighten the center a bit using some white acrylic paint i still have some blue paint on my brush so it's actually going to be a bluish color not white and then i'm going to blend it like i did with the other colors just blend until it looks like it's supposed to be there in the shape you want it to be there let's perfect it it may not look like much right now but trust me once it's done it is absolutely beautiful now.

I've removed some of the purple paint while working with it because I didn't let it dry properly, so I'm going back. Sponge on some more of that purple paint to cover my fingerprints and then let it dry to make sure it's dry before working with the gold there we go now you'll need some dotting tools depending on what design you want to put on your rock you'll need a fine liner brush, we will be doing a design similar to this, but not exactly the same, each of my mandalas is unique, one of a kind, I can never seem to make them exactly the same, I am using my gold acrylic paint for my mandala today, I'm a big fan of gold and I'm going to use the ending. from one of my brushes to make a large dot in the center of my rock to start with a large center dot now using a smaller dot I'm going to put a dot on the top bottom left and right so we have four dots there four dots main points now i'm going to go between those four main points with a smaller point tool like i said you don't have to follow my design but i'm just here to give you some inspiration now that we have those four larger points let's do some points small ones around them to make them stand out a bit more so start just below the big dot and work your way up to either side the dots get smaller as you run out of paint make sure your paints are not too runny because then they all run together and they don't look like dots at all now once you're done dotting around those dots I'm going to do some petals off of the four main points here.
One thing about my rocks is that there is a lot of room for creativity and your own ideas, so you definitely don't have to use my ideas now that I have those four petals. I'm going to make four bigger ones between those. I'm starting to look like a mandala flower. I'm going to do a double line on those last few petals because we're going to do something fancy there as well. Now we are going to do a little more. Stippling I'm going to make larger dots between the petals and then I'm going to circle those dots as well with a smaller dotting tool, just like I did with the first set of dots.
Always remember to let the rock dry before you begin. the gold because you're going to manipulate it a lot by doing all this work on it. I'm doing two dotted lines on that one now we're doing some lines on those double lined petals which you'll be able to see in the photos too much better because it's really hard to get your ideas from me while I'm moving so I'm definitely just taking a look to my photos. Now you can leave it like that or you can continue down to the bottom of the rock. I'm just going to add some half circles and some dots, bigger dots with my brush and again and I'm going to stipple around those dots like I did all the others as your dots get bigger use bigger tools I'm going to do some triangular shapes here on the outside like i said use your own creativity or you can use my ideas i'm just giving you some inspiration and i just want you to know that this rock looks dark in the video it's actually bold and beautiful and shiny and neither I can't even believe it now that it's been sprayed but it looks a bit darker in my video so I apologize for that once you have your gold on and wherever you are let it dry before you spray it or you could possibly run together , you can also put your name on the bottom or whatever you want on the bottom inspirational message and then you take it down and spray it and it just comes the color as soon as you spray it and it looks absolutely beautiful so thank you so much for watching this
