I don't have to cut the strips. I'm almost halfway there and I love how they turn out. warm and bright, perfect for the perfect party, so what I'm going to do is take all my strips and start cutting them into smaller sections so I can start making my placemats and I think this pattern is pretty amazing, but, new, I wrote it, it's a free pattern, so you should check it by going to the description box below. I'm going to cut all of these strips into three different sized rectangles and they will be the base of my quilt as you go.

Place these fabrics. They will look great on my placemats for my party. I mean, I don't really have a party plan, but I like to be prepared. This is a fairly pinkish reddish color, which means that if I spill some of my wine on it it just won't

show

. It's a shame I like warm colors. I think this is going to be really pretty and I'm stacking them on top of each other so it goes away quickly. The great thing about quilting is that the technique is if you are not comfortable with free motion quilting. Skip it because we are piecing and quilting at the same time so that project is needed, it makes it a little more manageable, it's not as scary and hey, it's a lot of fun.

I can't wait to

show

you how it all comes together. These placemats will look sloppy, but I want to control the color placement a bit. If you can imagine, this is how the strips will be placed on the finished placemat, so what I will do is on the top. from the bottom, go with the warmer reds and maybe in the middle, hang out with those yellow, yellow and orange colors and all the really fun stuff, so all I need for each placemat is ten of each size, so I'll just take a second. and I pick ten random pieces of fabric that are the color I want it to be, what I'm going to use is a mitered scene to make my placemat and if you've done bookbinding you've probably done this technique already. and what I'm going to do is take my smallest strip and one of my largest and I'm going to place them on top of each other like this, so what I'm going to do is draw a line from one point to another so I can sew directly on that line and then I'm going to trim off the excess, this could be some confetti or some kind of decoration for my

dinner

or if I could throw it in the trash and then when I open it, Look, there's that first mitered scene, this It's a little different than your normal quilt, because I'm actually joining my strips together before I sew them together and this will make this placemat look a little more interesting, maybe not as basic. like a normal quilt, as you're writing, now I'm going to take my third strip and place it on top of the fabric like I did before, but I'm going to go in the opposite direction, so I want to make I'm sure these seams will be they reflect each other, so it goes to the right, it goes to my right and I'm going to draw another line and so on, you want to open it, here we go, that's my first part.

It looks fantastic. I'm going to make five more like this and then press them so that half of the strips are ready for our placemat and I'll make the other half the same but different. I will continue to have the same idea. mitered scene, the only difference is that it will be opposite of the first one, so the first fabric will go to the right instead of the left, but I'm still going to draw my line, I'm still going to sew it, I'm still going to trim it and it's going to go on. Being awesome now, let's pretend this fantasy dinner party never happens.
I have to admit it's a little ironic. I am making four placemats when I am a family of five. I wonder who won't get a placemat when we sit down to eat? dinner, open it up and look, now you can see it's the opposite of the first one so I just need to add the bottom one going left instead of right, drawing, sewing and cutting well and when I open it you can see. It'll be the opposite shape, so I'll make four more of those, iron them on, and then I'll be ready to finally quilt while it's going well before I can start quilting.
I need to get the layers of my quilt sandwich and what I have. What I have here is the backing so the backing needs to be bigger than the placemat just because that will give me something to hold on to and then also a piece of batting and you can use any batting you want if you have cotton polyester, but I prefer not to use fusible batting with a fusible on top because I'm going to press it a little bit and I know I'm going to hit my iron on that's doable and then I'll make a mess.
I'm going to grab my first strip. It's very fun and I'll place it like this on the left side. I'm going to go ahead and sew just one basting line right here to keep it in place because when I put my second strip on top I don't want it to move or shift. out of place on a walking foot is very useful for this because it will help tie all those layers together and prevent them from curling and we have the first strip of my placemat ready to go, now I'm going to grab the second part.
Let's go with this one and I'm going to sew them together. The problem is that it's not complicated, but I'm going to have to try to match this seam a bit. The best thing about this pattern is that if they don't match. I'm just going to say it needs to be like this, it's very abstract or you're going to give it an artistic reason, but what I'm going to do is I'm going to place it directly on top of that strip and I'm just going to check to make sure that those dots are lined up and to keep it from moving I'm just going to pass it over a small pin to hold it in place that way when you sew it through the batting and backing layers and that piece doesn't move or come off. of place and just a quick check on that one looks fantastic, pin it in place and then do the same thing sewing, but this time definitely using a quarter inch to sew along the line that we have on the second row of our placemats and it looks like those dots match up pretty well.
I'm going to go ahead and press I want it to be nice and flat that way when I place the next row on top, it's right into place and just like that, I have two rows done in place. mat now, although I put a tack on that first row to keep it in place, I'm not going to remove it, it won't be noticeable because it was less than a quarter inch and when I added that quarter inch there it covers it now, if you want you can add another basting line here to hold us in place before we put the other one on top, just make sure it's less than a quarter inch and I'll go ahead and do that. to make sure it stays nice and goes where it needs to be so the next strip is face down like this basically it's the same as the second one I put there it's just flipped over and the nice thing about that is it means I don't have I have to join no seams on this one, so it's like any other strip.
I have to put things together, which makes it a lot easier, so I turn it over, line it up as best I can, and put it in place. I had never hosted a dinner party before. I mean, I've had friends over for dinner, but it was like you know a taco bar or something, but I know I could make a fancy dinner if I had to. I already have the drinks and the horse divorce was chosen, so it will be fantastic. I just have to figure out what the normal menu would be, so I'm very good with a roast chicken.
You think it would work. You know, I'll have to work on that and this. one will definitely get the quarter inch seam, there we go when you fold it back. I have the same kind of diamond shape, it's right on the other side, so I'm going to press that down to make sure it's nice and crisp and where it needs to be. be next will go in the same direction as this one, so if I were to turn it over, this is the same as row a, it's just turned inside out and this time I'm going to try to make sure those seams match up. top I'm going to skip the basting stitch because I'm feeling a little wild and crazy and line them up again making sure my stitches match up somehow.
I'm not too worried, everything is fine, next one. It will be row A, but it will be turned in the same direction as the first one I took out, then I will repeat the sewing and then iron so this placemat is finished. The surprising thing is that it is already padded if you look back. You can see that those straight lines that secure the strips actually quilt it as well and I could go ahead and attach it, but you know I'd like a lot of quilting so I'm going to use my walking foot and just throw a couple extra lines of quilting in there before reaching for the binding, something cool with the walking foot, is not something I do often, but it may be something you see on a future episode of the

midnight

quilt show.
I'm just saying it. I'm adding the quilting lines. I'm just echoing the pieces here to add a little more to the quilt. I mean, you know, I love to quote things until they're dead and then add a little more padding, so I'm going to Add a few more lines and then I'm going to have to stitch it together and don't forget if you and your friend want to make this adorable placemat, there is a free pattern in the description box below, you should check it out, I don't like it right now. Go get it so the quilting is ready and all I have to do is attach it and I'm not a big fan of the binding part but at least these little projects are small enough to get done pretty quickly so everything All I have to do is cut it out and put the binding on and then I could set the table for my little dinner party, so I know that the binding is not as difficult as I imagine, it's as simple as cutting strips and ironing them on the CAF and then sewing them together with the edge without binding the strip to the edge of the quilt, once I've gone all the way around the quilt I just need to turn the binding inside out and attach it to the front by sewing it right near the folded edge. and these placemats are finished and my table is set.
I'm so excited that you were able to join me for dinner Jenny, here's your favorite Shirley Temple because I know you don't drink wine and of course Tula, I know you prefer something in the cool, but here's a nice red glass and thank you to come. It's been so much fun watching these placemats come together with the quilt as you progress technique for taking care of a horse divorce for works hors d'oeuvres oh god I've been saying wrong my whole life now one of the sweetest is always look at me like I'm crazy . Well, you learn something new every day right now.
Do not forget. You and a friend could win a kit to make these placemats and also free enrollment in crafty unlimited, which allows you to take all crafty classes for free, including those by meeting. I'd also love to know what culture you'd like to invite to dinner, so leave a comment below to let me know who it would be and be sure to subscribe because you never know what's going to happen on the
