Quick Review | Ferrari 488 Spider | An Obscene Machine

Feb 27, 2020
I recently received a call from the owner of Midwest Motors who told me he had an extremely rare Ferrari 488 Spider. Would you like to come see it? And I told him absolutely. I just bought a car from them. I made a video with them and I thought it would be cool to see well, the only thing I can tell you as a solo videographer. I do all the editing. I do all the sound. Fascinating music. Everything, from start to finish. It takes me forever to put together a video, so maybe I just have a couple of hours with a Ferrari isn't something I'm used to, but in the case of this video, that's why it's a short

format and you'll get to see a little bit of what it's like to be in that guy. of the car now, if you've seen a 458 recently and then you take a look at this, my goodness, does it look better in terms of aerodynamics?

They've improved the front end, the lower splitter, the overall ventilation, but underneath, this carries over a lot from the 458 uh, right down to the suspension geometry, a lot of it is very similar overall, the exterior is all about purpose and The airflow from the carbon ceramic brakes to the ventilation at the rear and including the engine cover, is all to dissipate heat. aerodynamics to give this car the downforce it needs when you're obviously at double digit speeds like you would be most of the time when you get to the 488's price of $267 Plus 000 for this and this is over 300 with the way which is optional, you expect certain things and with Ferrari you have a long history of racing aerodynamicists working on it and that's why you get some of these crazy accents like the door handle that also works as a little fin that helps air flow over these panels and into the intercoolers and back through the engine to keep it cool, so there's so much functionality and purpose here we could go on for hours about it.

More Interesting Facts About,

I'm in the shop and turboski out of town, go figure 'cause I have a gem here for him, a Ferrari 488 Spider, but he decided he's going to a car show in northern Alaska with his PT Cruiser convertible, as usual, so that what we have here is a lot of nothing underneath, everything is covered, in fact. I'd probably need a Ferrari engineer to tell me what all these little details do, but for the most part, surprisingly, when you look at this, it doesn't look like an esoteric car, you've got plastic panels, you've got composite panels, you've got cast aluminum. forged aluminum parts that you would see on a car, you know, under 00,000, it just doesn't look as stylish.

I'm actually surprised that you have carbon ceramic brakes, you have variable adjustable and electronically controlled shocks. double wishbone suspension on the front wheel uh and then of course these little rubber air director fins to help move obviously the air from under the car it has air inlets to move the air over the coolers obviously , there are ducts going towards the rear and probably the engine and transmission, but again without a Ferrari engineer here, it's just kind of a guess, but let's take a look at the rear as we get closer to the rear of the Ferrari, obviously this is where the engine and transmission are, but Todd and Brian The mechanics here are a little shy today because they are so stressed looking at this high performance

machine

.

They're a little jealous of Scotts with their PT Cruiser right now, but they gave me a dose of this Penzoil oil and you. Know that it is special because it has a Ferrari stamp here, so this increases the value by approximately 6,000 per unit. but like Todd told me, you can go to Walmart and buy the same thing and you know, do this on your own and what he showed me here is very similar to the 458, most of the time it takes to service it, at least making changes of oil, it's like any other modern car, you have to loosen these Arrow panels, uh, it's 20 odd bolts to loosen it and then like the 458, there's about seven or eight drain plugs to drain all the oil, first you drain the crankcase and you go and take out all the other little oil channels so you can repair this, so that's what takes the longest.
Now looking at this, you could say that most normal people could do it on their own, cat points aside, because of course Ferrari decided. which use a special bracket or screw type connector so you can't just use a normal CU Jack, you can't go down and remove the panel so that's something to keep in mind about the back and that's really all it takes. what can you see. Here's the interesting part about maintenance. If you buy a car like this new, you have the option of getting a seven-year maintenance plan that will cost you a pretty penny if you don't do the seven-year maintenance plan that covers you.
Learn about all its services, apart from the brakes, it is already two years old. Most people who are going to buy this probably won't keep it that long, but if you're going to buy this used, it's definitely something to consider. to make sure that a seven-year maintenance plan has been done on it and also that the previous owner had Ferrari do all those things or had them done in a shop and then certified by Ferrari because if you miss a service here and there , a timer on this car, if you miss a service and you have that 7 year or two year plan, what happens is you bring it to the shop for your service, you lose it, the plan cancels, you have to pay to reactivate it and do a lot of paperwork regarding that, so you have to keep up with this, you don't want to be lazy and go through the jungles of South America or whatever you're going to do or go to Alaska like Scott when we put under the trunk the trunk whatever you want to call it, you have this huge V8.
Now what Ferrari decided to do with the 458 is give it two turbos and for the first time this twin turbo almost has the exact same throttle response as the naturally aspirated version of this 458 engine and that's partly why it's so fun to drive it not only on the street and on the track no feeling of turbo lag no feeling of the things you normally get with turbocharged cars now if You are someone like me and most people who enjoy driving especially on track cars, we like naturally aspirated engines with higher revs, you have less problems with heat, all the things you associate with turbocharged cars, well, they've spent an enormous amount of time trying to eliminate them. issues with heat lag throttle response, overall sound, this is almost the same if not better than the 458 engine note and somehow they have put all that together and that is mainly what you are paying for here, the engine and the transmission, that is the most magical thing.
About this Ferrari, looks aside, if this is your bag, we're in the Ferrari 488 in the middle of rush hour traffic and what that means is that you can't really do much except briefly accelerate. I have no idea. What would you do with this car on the street. I would like to know and meet some of the owners to see what their lifestyle is like. St. because it is very fast. Even compared to the 458, the 458 was fast in a different way. but because you have the Boost because you have the extra horsepower here, it's just amazing how fast this car accelerates and how

quick

ly it's all over if you want to keep your license, one of the things, well, actually, one of the best things.
Ferrari parts and they are known for their dual clutch transmissions that go far beyond what everyone else has done. Everything they've learned from Formula 1 has been applied to their street cars here and, you know, I complain that I have a distaste for automated ones. manuals and then you get into a car like this and if I could have an automated manual like this on most cars it wouldn't be a problem. Now this is the reality of having a super in the real world when you're not on a track and you're not on a back road or Canyon Road, you're just crawling and this comes down to pretty much any other car, a PT Cruiser GT would be just as fun like this Ferrari right now on The Daily Grind.
So most people want to know what it's like to drive a Ferrari every day, apart from the ridiculous brakes and acceleration, this is strangely comfortable, it feels like a luxury car or a luxury sports car, there's nothing here make me scream like oh this. It's a race car, it will either break your back or be downright uncomfortable. I could see him driving it every day, although it's a little crazy to do so. One of the biggest things that Ferrari talks about with this car is its stability control system the way it can adapt to several different modes, so what this means is that it's yet another supercar which makes it accessible for those who really have no driving experience.
You can enter here. You had never been on a race track before, you had never driven fast and you were just comfortable and of course. There are about 20 different settings here to adjust now all the way, right on the steering wheel, you have sport race and then of course everything off, which would be absolutely dangerous in this car to disable all drivers assistance. Being in a very open area is probably a clue to even exploiting some of that. No? This feels much better than the 458. I mean, its ability to turn is very sharp. It's crazy. I probably spent a day with him. 458 and I followed it of course I haven't followed this car but I can say right away with its Roadman and the overall suspension and damping feels very similar but it's just the excitement of turning and that low power there compared to The 458 you had to wind the 458 all the time, which of course is amazing, but with this car it comes on instantly as soon as you step on the gas, all the momentum kicks in early and takes you all the way.
All the way to the redline, the only thing I could really complain about is that I wish this thing ended even higher, it seems like the fuel cutoff comes on pretty

quick

ly, well that's because you know you're going to hit the wall. Of course, you know, at first I thought, would you really want to spend 260 something on the 488 here and the reality is that when you get behind the wheel and drive it, the direct answer is if you had the money, of course you do. It's a lot of fun to just turn off and just put the power down and just go full speed in this car.
I don't know how long you would have a license to drive this car on the streets every day we talk about being It's realistic about cars quite often and this is yet another car that surprises you, well, you'll never reach its potential on the street and probably on the track there's so much downforce, there's so much arrow designed into it, so much overall grip that it's just kind. of stall and I think that's one of the things you forget when driving, you know, slower cars and we talk about the MD Miata all the time or you can just drive it on the street, go full speed 100% of the time and have It's very fun, whereas this car is really limited to maybe 10% of its capacity.
It takes so much restraint to drive it on a public road that I think it's one of the things that kills the fun for me. So what's the takeaway from my day in the Ferrari? One thing I can tell you is that this excluded car was worth over $300,000 and that made me think it was worth more than my life. Someone could legitimately take that money and pay someone to beat him up. about me and they would, it's worth more than my house and most people's houses and I think the strangest part is that I could take that 300 grand on a race car, three really cool daily drivers, a truck and a trailer to tow my race car to the track and that's where the money doesn't add up specifically when you look at the bottom, now the most important thing is that you are paying for the chassis, you are paying for the prestige and history of the brand, you are paying for its Formula 1 experience and they kind of subsidize that, but you're getting one of the best transmissions, you're getting one of the best built engines in the world, but again, these cars tend to tend to die in value after 10,000 miles and the cost of maintaining them throughout the journey. part of life is only for those 1centers and I think it is one of the most disappointing and most exciting parts.
If you are a 1center and can afford it, it is totally exclusive to you, if you are not well, it keeps you dreaming, maybe one. day, so the funny thing about this Ferrari 488 is that the mechanics that work here think it's some kind of joke, their favorite car is the Chrysler Learon convertible, so to them this is just, you know, this is a car for every day.
