Hi, glad to have you in this president's day information video for
kidsand adults and for your dog, your iguana, anything else that might be interested in hearing this because this is what's up. This is a strange vacation. You're about to find out why a lot of people. don't realize this is a weird holiday i mean let's be honest you're going to learn about it okay you'll impress your friends with the
factsstick to it because honestly it's just weird there's no other word for that at first. what you will learn about
presidentsday is that it is more complicated than you think there are many disagreements about this simple holiday did you know that people disagree on what to call it? people don't agree on how to write it and people don't even agree on what it's celebrating ok it's very weird but let's start at the beginning president's day is an american holiday it became a holiday national in 1879. the president then was rutherford b hayes and rutherford b hayes, can you see hello i'm here handsome boy strange hair good boy great great president a certain president rutherford b hayes wanted our first president george washington's birthday to be a federal holiday george washington's birthday was february 22 the holiday was often called washington's birthday instead of president's day and was always celebrated on february 22 here is a picture of a streetcar that was decorated for washington's birthday this is a photo from 1892 a long time ago quite simple true but then disagreements came in 1968 some people tried to change the day of the pres ident to the third Monday in February and they failed at least at first, you see, three years later, President's Day was changed and became the third Monday in February instead of always being February 22, so it no longer always it was Washington's birthday, then it got interesting, you see, people didn't agree on who. to celebrate some people thought hey we have to celebrate george washington it's in honor of george washington's birth hday was george washington day so we should celebrate it we should just focus on him then there are other people who said that abraham lincoln's birthday is also closed we should celebrate george washington and abraham lincoln it's only fair that both of them right that's great we should celebrate these two
presidentson president's day and then there were other people who think it should be celebrated at george washington abraham lincoln and all the other presidents after all its called presidents day and we should celebrate all the presidents some people believe that and some people believe that all three are wrong and that we should focus on maybe three presidents or four presidents , the ideas are endless and there are various states that believe each of these different things and the government allows every state decides who we're going to celebrate on president's day and then people disagreed on what to call it right so some people believe it wa shington's birthday and there are states that strictly call it washington's birthday there are some states and some people who think it should be called the birthday of washington and lincoln and there are some people in some states who think it should be called the state president with the apostrophe between the t and the s that kind of spelling means they are specifically celebrating george washington just and then other states put the apostrophe after the s like we've done in this video and call it president's day and write it this way okay so whatever call it whatever you want to celebrate there's stuff in The ones that almost all of us agree with this holiday, like that many stores have big sales on President's Day, right, big sales on household appliances. things, mattresses, furniture and all kinds of things, random things, wonderful things, great sales and because it is a federal holiday schools are closed on president's day and like other federal holidays post offices are closed on President's Day.
I agree on things with this holiday, but there is one other thing that unites us all on this holiday. Every state celebrates George Washington. Some states also celebrate Abraham Lincoln. Some states celebrate all presidents, but all states celebrate George Washington. It all comes back to him. I'm going to end with these cherries because there is this legend about George Washington and the cherry tree and he being honest when they asked him if he cut it now that story is a legend and the person who made it up admitted it was just a myth, it was just a legend, but it's still a symbol of george washington and people love to eat cherries on president's day so if you can have a couple cherries and remember the first president of the united states and if you want you can remember the other guys too
