The survival of America and the resilience of civilization itself depend on men and women. Just as each of you depends on people who love your country with all their heart, energy and soul, you depend on citizens who build, sustain, nurture and defend institutions like this, this is how societies are made and how they advance. in what has historically been done. What is unique about America is the durability of its institutions against the passions and prejudices of the day. When times are turbulent, when the going is difficult, what matters most is what is permanent, timeless, lasting and eternal.
It was on this soil that American patriots maintained their most vital fortress. In our war for independence, it was this school that gave us the men and women who fought and won a bloody war to extinguish the evil of slavery within a lifetime of our founding. They were the graduates of prominent West Point figures such as MacArthur, Patton Eisenhower and Bradley. who led America to victory over the sinister Nazis and imperial fascists seventy-five years ago, it was under the leadership of West Point graduates like the legendary General Matthew Ridgway that the military was at the forefront of ending terrible injustice of segregation. force that held the line against the brutal opposition and depression of communism and it is because of patriots like you that America has ascended to new heights of human achievement and national endeavor this is your story this is the legacy that each of you inherits It is the The legacy won with American blood on the summit of Little Round Top, on the crimson beaches of Normandy, in the frozen mud of Bastogne and the dense jungles of Vietnam, is the legacy of brave and faithful patriots who fought for every inch of earth with every ounce of strength and every last bit of heart, drive and courage they had and they did it because they believed in the eternal principles of our founding.
They did it because they appreciated their homes, their faith, their family and their flag, and they did it because when they came. In this school you were taught to hold on to your love for our country to appreciate our heritage, learn from it and build on it, that is what young Americans are taught here at West Point, that is the legacy that you carry forward as second lieutenants in the United States Army and you must never forget over the course of four long years, you have honed your skills, trained your mind and body, overcome every obstacle and earned your proud place in the long gray line, you have overcome the rigors of our days and Beast an intensity. of CL DT and weeks of training in the scorching heat, we have pushed ourselves far beyond all imaginable limits, some of you have even pushed the limits, for any cadets who are not done walking outside of their hours as commanding officer .
I hereby absolve all cadets under restriction for minor conduct infractions and that is an immediate fact. Congratulations, it's good, right? Don't you feel better now? Surviving the 47-month experience is never easy, but only the class of
2020can say that. He survived 48 months and when it comes to bragging rights, no one can boast more than the class that stopped Navy football's 14-year winning streak. there you beat the Navy and brought the commander in chief trophy back to West Point for two years in a row, so we say, come on, Army, come on, this promotion ensured more than 1,000 victories for the Black Knights, including three ball victories , 13 NCAA team appearances and one women's career. rugby championship with the help of someone I just met 2019 MVP Sam Sullivan fantastic job five fantastic cadets won national boxing championships and adaiah queen brought home Brendan Brown won the title of national academic weightlifting champion Thirty-eight scholarship cadets earned to continue their studies include First Captain Dane Vander Waal, who received one of the most prestigious awards in academia, the Rhodes Scholarship.
Congratulations Dane, that's a great achievement, thank you, congratulations, great achievement, but no one modeled the values of the scholar soldier like Lindy Moretti and Lindy both did. the highest overall ranking in its class and the highest score in the physical program. He has published scientific research in a leading journal and said five new records on the athletic track. Lindy, credible work. Where's Lindy? Where's Lindy? Someone who did so well that they didn't give you a very good score. good seat, Lindy, we need to talk about that, congratulations right now. America needs a cadet class that lives by your motto with vision, we lead, we need you to carry on the spirit of the great General Ulysses, graduating shortly after assuming overall command after three years. of the Union setbacks, General Grant encountered someone heading north to Washington during the Battle of the Wilderness, if you see that President Grant said, tell him for me that no matter what happens there will never be any turning back In 1917, the young man became the first soldier assigned to the Army Tank Corps.
A month after starting the job, he saw the future on horseback. If resistance is broken and the line is pierced, the tank must and will assume the role of pursuing cavalry and ride the enemy to the death. under Patton's leadership, that's exactly what they did, we need you to be as bold and determined as the immortal General Douglas MacArthur, who knew that the American soldier never gives up after leaving the Philippines for Australia at a low
pointof the Pacific War in 1942. If he returned for two years, then he took great strategic risks and often put himself in personal danger on October 2, 1944.
MacArthur descended from a landing craft, walked through knee-deep water, and proclaimed People of the Philippines: I have returned by the grace of the Almighty. God, our forces are back on Philippine soil. He then called on the brave men of the islands to rise up and join the fight. The United States' momentum was unstoppable. These great leaders were not afraid of what others might say about them. They didn't care. They knew it was their duty. to protect our country, they knew that the army exists to preserve the Republic and the solid foundations on which it rests. God of the family, freedom and justice of the country, you were true, tough American patriots, that is what our country needs, especially in these times, and that is what each of you are. of you begin your Army career at a crucial time in American history we are restoring the founding principles that the job of the American soldier is not to rebuild foreign nations but to steadfastly defend and defend our nation from foreign enemies we are ending the era of endless wars in their place is a renewed and clear-headed focus on defending America's vital interests.
It is not the duty of American troops to resolve ancient conflicts in distant lands that many people have never even heard of. We are not the police of the world, but let our enemies be vigilant, if our people are threatened we will never hesitate to act and when we fight from now on we will only fight to win, as MacArthur said, in war there is no substitute for victory to ensure we have the best equipment and technology available my administration has embarked on a colossal rebuilding of the American military, a record like no other after years of devastating budget cuts and a military completely exhausted by these endless wars.
We have invested more than two trillion trillion, that is, T dollars in the most powerful fighting force on planet Earth, by far, we are building new ships, bombers, fighter planes and helicopters for hundreds of new tanks, military satellites, rockets and missiles, including a hypersonic missile that goes 17 times faster than the fastest missile availablecurrently in the world and can hit a target 1,000 miles away within 14 inches of Center Point for the first time in 70 years we established a new branch of the United States military the space force which is a big deal in recent years the America's warriors have made clear to everyone the high cost of threatening the American people, the savage caliphate of Isis has been 100% destroyed under the Trump administration and its barbaric leader Al-Baghdadi has been killed and the world's number one terrorist, Qasem Soleimani, also dead as commander in chief.
I will never forget. for a moment the immense sacrifices we ask of those who wear the uniform of this nation have already known the crushing pain of losing a brother in arms today we remember an extraordinary cadet who made the supreme sacrifice in an accident last year CJ Morgan we are deeply moved to be accompanied by his father Christopher Morgan and CJ was something very special Christopher is a Secret Service agent a tough guy, a great guy, a great son is looking down right now Christopher, I want you to know that we will carry the blessed memory of CJ in our hearts forever, thank you. thank you very much tomorrow the United States will celebrate a very important anniversary the two hundred and forty-fifth birthday of the unrelated United States military is going to be my birthday I also don't know if that happened by accident, did it happen?by accident please, but it's a great day due to the birthday of the army and, as you know, the first commander in chief of the army, General George Washington, called the fort that stood on this majestic
pointthe most important post in the United States, its strategic location on the Hudson River.
It was vital to our war for independence if British ships controlled this river that would have divided our young nation, so American soldiers stretched a massive metal chain across the waters of the Hudson from West Point to Lake Island. Constitution. I saw a piece of that chain it is incredible that no enemy ship has dared to even attempt to cross each link of that great chain that was formed from over 100 pounds of pure American iron mined from American soil and manufactured with American pride. Together, those links formed an unbreakable line of defense that stands here before you.
For you, more than two centuries later, it is clearer than ever that General Washington's words still ring true. West Point remains America's indispensable outpost, the vital ground it must not lose, and our nation's survival still depends on the great chain that extends from this place one made not of iron but of flesh and blood of memory and spirit. of pure faith and unwavering courage today each of you becomes another link in that unbroken chain forged in the crucible known as the United States Military Academy, the largest in the world that has ever given. you, soldiers you can trust on your right and on your left, and we now entrust you with the noblest task that any warrior has ever had the privilege of carrying out the task of preserving American freedom as long as you remain loyal, faithful and true . then our enemies won't even stand a chance our rights will never be stolen our freedoms will never be trampled our destiny will never be denied and the United States of America will never be defeated with the grace of God and the heroes of West Point America will always prevail, nothing will be will stand in its way, nothing will stop it, and nothing will stop the West Point class of 2020 from achieving true and lasting victory.
God bless you, God bless the United States military, and God bless America. Congratulations, thank you very much.
