where I explore food and recipes of

hard

times

today I'm going to try a recipe sent to me by the lovely sama sama thank you very much for commenting and for sending me this recipe, it is based on a childhood memory of having

poor

man's

pancakes

now they are called

poor

man's

pancakes

because they don't contain eggs or yeast only three

ingredients

really you can also add another ingredient if you have it but you can make this with just three

ingredients

flour sugar and water like this that i'm just going to make some pancakes i'm going to eat them with a couple different alternatives to syrup and what happened with jelly, peanut butter and i'm also going to make a savory version that was inspired by kenny's stores and may he rest in peace would this at your restaurant and it was pancakes with macaroni and cheese sounds great right I always wanted to try it and today I thought it would be a good opportunity to do it so let's go ahead and make these pancakes so I'll need a pan so I'll go ahead and double this recipe one cup flour one cup sugar boy these are going to be sweet so this is what Sama Peace said in your comment.

They called them eggless crepes because eggs were more expensive. We would have to use powdered milk. We would cover them with any pantry item. since some I used a little bit of powdered milk I'm going to do the same thing and I haven't had a big bag of this since when I made mozzarella cheese with powdered milk I'm going to put about three teaspoons of that in there and I'm going to add a cup of water while i have my griddle heated here you can do this in a regular skillet but i'm using my griddle because i'm going to cook several of these at once so mix them up so now i can see why someone said these are going to be fucking pancakes because this The dough is very thin.

Use a little oil here and wipe off the excess with a paper towel. It is a very thin dough. It always sounds great. good indication these might be ready to flip around the edges as well when you start to see them set up then you also know it's a good time look here are the bubbles I'm talking about so I'm going to turn the heat up a bit to about 325. so for the one i just poured i'm going to add some mac and cheese right in the middle of this one this one goes to you kenny shops and i hope you're resting easy if you haven't seen the documentary about the candy stores and I'll put a link down below that's worth a look so right off the bat these pancakes look different they look a little bit shinier a little bit more plastic and they're also browning a little different maybe it's because there's no baking powder in these, so they're definitely thinner than regular pancakes, but they're thicker than crepes, so I know it's worth it.

I'm going to use a metal spatula on this griddle, but this griddle actually comes with a metal spatula. so i think you can put up with these pancakes they are so thin they need something thin to flip them ok here we go there's the interesting pancake lastly our macaroni and cheese gives you a mush they definitely have a different consistency than typical like ihop style. pancake or bisquick style pancake and they're not as brown they're thinner and when I flip them they feel a little more rubbery ok so let's try our poor man's pancake let's try them on their own first before we add anything oh they feel pretty crunchy look at that wow they are a lot they are crunchy can you hear that this is what they look like on the bottom ok let's treat them itadakimasu they have a really nice crunchy texture to them slightly chewy on th The medium is definitely different than a typical pancake house style pancake, they're not that fluffy at all, not surprising because there's no yeast, they're a bit chewy, but have a nice kind of caramelized crunch to them, they're very sweet. they don't really need any syrup at all there is a lot of sweetness in terms of flavor they taste a lot like a fortune cookie that level of sweetness of a fortune cookie kind of caramelized sugary taste but it lacks a bit of butter but not bad really , very sweet so I wouldn't add any syrup to this but yeah they are pretty good and definitely much sweeter than a French crepe they also have a thicker texture and don't really need any syrup because it's so sweet having said that, now I'm going to try it with some peanut butter because that was sama's recommendation so take some peanut butter and add some peanut butter here and I'm also going to add some strawberry jam too make me that song peanut butter and jelly that's what i like on my tummy that's great creamy peanut butter adds a ton of flavor jelly adds a little more sweetness and delicious fruity flavor mmm also a little powdered sugar recommended so let me take that there we go not me I imagine this is going to be a lot tastier, it's more visually appealing and it's going to be sweeter. so here's the flipped pancake and there's the mac and cheese which doesn't work as well although it should be said I'm not a big fan of mac and cheese so off the bat I think the biggest problem I have with this is the texture the mac and cheese is a little rubbery and the pancake is a little rubbery also a little crunchy it's just not that flavorful I don't think the mac and cheese really adds much more to this than n just a little bit of extra carbs, oh I bet if I put some shredded queso fresco on it that would take this somewhere else besides adding carbs I don't think mac and cheese in this case with this particular recipe and without any additional cheese adds all of that granted kenny i think i would have done this differently i would have used a different batter and of course different macaroni and cheese but just out of curiosity i wanted to see what would happen but yeah that's not my fav Orito I think hands down my favorite combination with this particular pancake is hands down peanut butter and jelly so good I think actually peanut butter and jelly would be good with any type of pancake it's a great combination of richness and fruity sweetness, I think if I were to make this recipe again I would definitely cut back on the sugar, maybe use half the amount, but I think in this current state of a one to one ratio, to the kids would love this it's very sweet what you do I don't need any syrup at all because it's very sweet and in terms of flavor it tastes very much like a fortune cookie so there you have it poor man's pancakes thank you so much salma for sharing this recipe with me and thank you all so much for I am seeing if you have a recipe you would like me to try or try or one that you have in your family.
