Pan Celtic Race 2021 ~The Film~

Nov 22, 2021
You can lose a lot of faith in people if you watch the news all day, people are horrible, aren't they? You know most people teach kids that the world is a really bad place full of horrible people, but if you get on your bike and ride through a country where you meet countless nice people who are willing to do a lot good things for you when you face your limits you realize how far you can push those limits it's kind of funny because people always question what they're capable of So you tell people about this kind of thing or this style of driving and most people you talk to will say things like I could never do that which is absolutely not true we all started somewhere and it was only when you got to trying to do something like this and you realize what capable as you really are, it's just a matter of pushing those limits to find out how far you can take them, the pan

celtic

race

2021

was an ultra-endurance self-contained bike

race

that started on the high uras from the makers in maize all traveled 1240 miles through

celtic

lands and ended up in north wales um at the clan chief's house in clandino nice to meet you astor alex yes barbs when asked what he did made you think of the bacon breed you know it was. when you were a kid and you used to go bike riding and every bike ride was an adventure as you get older you forget about the adventurous side of riding a bike and sometimes it becomes a means to an end for some people but it's not like that no it always has to be that way just to take you back to those childhood days of adventuring and enjoying biking the roads the trails the hills the smells that's what running is a way of taking people back to a time when you were much more carefree and the only things you had to worry about was getting somewhere on your bike pushing the pedals eat drink and sleep well i just want to wish everyone a safe trip it's ok this rain is only temporary but the memories will fade i'll be forever, all good, rise up, cloud riders, celtic plan, spears will shake, the shield, the selfie, the splitting of a sword, a red day, as the sun rises, right now, right now or, come on, the jockeys arrived at the makers' heights in Cornwall, ready to start the race. and were greeted with a biblical rain that lasted for hours on end, which then flooded people's gear, flooded phones, and generally got the race off to a pretty bad start.

Cornish roads that were narrow and relentlessly steep. just one after another climb after climb yeah the route is brutal not a single flat piece in the whole thing um you're just mining you're driving but I've done normalized 260 watts and done 24k now that's like normally out. the road would be like 35k now so it looks like you're buzzing I'm having so much fun why would you if you don't if you're not like you don't enjoy it yeah yeah well there's like there's two d different sides where you'll find people to the one who loves it but they love it afterwards yeah and when they're going through it they say oh my gosh it's so hard to see you so funny I'm sure like in a few hours I'll be in a hole but hey I hope no so i've been riding with it myself so what's your plan but but where are you headed tonight tonight tonight just keep riding? until yeah thing is i'll normally try to ride my bike overnight but like i've come to the race so tired i was already falling asleep for the week yeah at work so i don't know if i might need I'd like to get a pair last night, but yeah, and then if I have energy towards the end, that's when I can go all night or something.

pan celtic race 2021 the film...

Angus Young had already made it to the front of the race and was putting time on his closest rivals chris pipblado and alex boswell oh alex paul chris and will made it to the end of the dirt fighting for second place before disappearing into the man of the night, how many people, how many people have passed, it's just angus, probably like two hours ago or something, what's your game plan? things, I mean, he's a people thing, he's okay, dude, how are you okay? I don't have any plan, really, I'm just pedaling at my speed, you know, yeah, and then when I get tired, all that good plan, I've never raced before. like i've never run an event with a race at the end you know it's always been longhordak o and i've done a lot of that kind of thing i know how to handle myself and i haven't looked at the thing all the updates i've had are basically from you guys yeah i've been y'know i haven't wanted to look oh man what an amazing route you like it oh that's epic yeah yeah it gets better wait oh it gets. better ah honestly the tunes were buzzing like oh it's so good a little bit of moss on the hill uh yeah w heel slip yeah i love it that's the moonlight dance yeah are you gonna stop here, is that you, yes, yes, I hope there are some toilets?

Clock now 162. 162. Not a bad day, even though it's the first day. It has grip. Yes, there it is. We're just looking at your Instagram stories. nice to see you yeah nice to see you yeah walk easy man dancing in the moonlight everybody this rain jacket stuff i'm tucked in the back of my t-shirt and my lower back started to go numb and i thought i had fallen. i was at the bottom and i said oh i have to turn around so i had to turn around and go up a hill i just went back down i got to the top so i cant see it i was just at the back of my Jersey, wouldn't it?
pan celtic race 2021 the film
I was higher up, are you up? Are you a little scattered? My wife keeps telling me to do it. Op cycling like this yeah I hope there's up there okay it's oh I don't like getting up in the morning ready to sleep uh in Boston about two hours the sunrise this morning was amazing like I just got get into some knives and stuff. it was yes really very beautiful i'm going to go find mcdonald's there's a garage that's also safe because nothing opens until seven true and um all the places i've been must be seven by now and still i've never been here before it was lovely a bit different to scotland it was so different yeah i mean it's not huge obviously oh my god i thought i had this beautiful field to sleep in and i went and flipped my bike on its face really flat glass i oh all set and done and i was like how gloomy is this, could I just deal with it and I thought about it for a minute and they were literally like fighting all over like all over my team and I just did footage of folding everything over my face when I woke up in the morning from the other riders had camped out just down the road and I got inside it and he was sitting outside the bus shelter and he was like that fat shell is really shady you don't want to go in there and I went in and he was as if it's not as bad as you don't have to breathe through your nose, its good checkpoints are an important part of the race, providing a safe haven for the riders and giving them a chance to recharge their batteries both mentally as physically before continuing once more after having ridden through the night mike sheldrick's experience shines bright as he arrives at CP one in fourth he tells us stories of his adventures through the night when some people his age will fall asleep in a chair my plan they plan to leave at the beginning was just to get to the end of the man and i kept on there but i got there and i didn't feel really fat i kept a little bit loaded i think in a couple of nights two minutes though really good very good i had a good sleep in two nights though hi i have this morning its a different mindset like this i turned on my phone this morning and i got a message that my daughter has given birth to m and first grandson.
Kinda um it's a useful excuse though if I'm really struggling a bit half a range I think I have to go home we caught him with Chris just as he got to Bridgewater he was having some navigation issues but I was making great progress with the rest of the next package that's why you were looking at your phone back there I'm only doing about 100 miles on the garment I'll have to do the rest of my phone I'll tell you what considering you're having a problem you're doing pretty well alright alright i didn't think there were five guys on the way but you know when i got a postcard for pete i didn't see he didn't say yes because he's a pro god tonight tonight what's your plan i'll get to stonehenge t right first and then i'll see you going to stonehenge tonight yeah yeah and then i'll say i didn't get much sleep last night james with the forecast of heavy storms coming overnight chris didn't make it to stonehenge and went to bed halfway between glastonbury and stonehenge the rest of the field also took the opportunity to go to bed for the night angus unbelievably decided to move on yeah i'm not having a great time i'm adjusting to that kind of pace where it's like everything gets a little numb and your legs are spinning but you can't really feel them and like you have no control how much power you put in its pretty slow getting into this no idea where i am its like a complete lane maze you just follow a line i do a lot of things like math on my head, really, yeah, mental math, like working out, oh, if i keep going at this pace, what time will i get to this point? that kind of thing just keep me busy really or like oh but you know i'm at 21k avg hours so far if that drops to 20.8 can uh how much later am i going to be to finish completely like nonsense stuff um but it just keeps things going working out angus uses his local knowledge and heads to a cave in cheddar gorge where for the first time since racing started he lay down for a few hours when we caught him with chris at stonehenge who was running second angus was 105 miles ahead thanks to chris's long sleep, paul alex and stu percival managed to set a good time. on it in bristol we met some cyclists who were seizing the opportunity to make use of big cities cities provide the opportunity for cyclists to really start thinking about their next move with things like public transport allowing them easy access home zero from the race my next gun was around 50k this morning it's been a right struggle on the steep stuff it's digging in a bit so yeah I'm trying to figure out what to do I still have a better way From the looks of it, I don't know if it's something that is easily fixed, it can be really scary to leave the city when you have so much normality there and you can eat, drink and sleep and then you have to go out on your own back to the quiet roads back to your thoughts dread fear loneliness how was the weather last night swim again im completely soaked ok so i have wet bibs to start the day? nothing like a nice cold wet bag it's getting bigger i watched your video on instagram i went to bed and i was huffing and puffing four hours later i woke up i was still pulling down it gave me some slack i just want to get up and dry last last flint in front then about a half mile maybe more than that maybe like 2k down the road at the bottom too so my two inner tubes went and then yeah right before i got there to bridge seven really really rough but you go over a little bridge and it's super rough i was absolutely hammering to get back up to try to get back up third right um is that what you're looking for now third right that's where it was yea i almost caught chris yesterday morning just before the gravel bit yea yea you were hot on chris tail yesterday but yea obviously flat and then when again i had to do a patch , yeah, um, don't have yet i go no other tube ok i'm just gonna go i'm going to be late for the next few days i have the pool i haven't used it yet um the weather is fine the weather is getting better i keep telling people it's getting better ok i'm gonna break then enjoy that descent mate yeah go again oh well its going to lift my spirits after you beat me yesterday i think i am about six hours behind where i would like to be planning so yeah because i wanted to doing 400k yesterday and i did just under three still had plenty of time so i wanted to be in swansea despite the problems i had faced alex boswell progresses through the day beating at least four of the riders in front of him well i just checking into my hotel for the night it's a little basic but i'll give you a quick tour this is the door you can log in oh that's the sink i don't know what that is let's get up close to it jumping over the punctures is my nightmare today, but I'm in good shape. you're ferg i think it's the race itself if i were to say it was a person it would have to be mali this is the race within the race matt ryan for those who don't know molly ryan the race director and the man who thought that this got you you're a point chewing pacman isn't that so yeah what you gonna stop puppet bashing?
What are you going to do with those stops all the time up top you know he wants the race he wants to take people back to the time wherethat they were kids and could just ride their bikes all day without a care in the world, I think that says a lot about their character that you get caught up in. life sometimes and have something where you can unplug and forget about all your problems or even they don't have to be problems that you want to forget about but just a day in the life you just want to unplug from everything and get hit the road and have an adventure we didn't test our resilience in life much because everything is comfortable you can go shopping buy whatever you want you don't even have to have money you can buy a car you can anything you want we never really tested our resilience i think it's been personal it's good for me to do the welsh have been fantastic its very accommodating and i have had some really good stories and adventures but they really like that i have never rode any of this i have been on or n so i dont know nothing about whales i just that every time I'm like, oh, you know, off the main road, I'm like how do they find this?
It's so cool and this morning so you know I came from that dog like the red dog and then um the first few hours were rough my phone ran out of battery so no music to block out my own thoughts and I was like oh in front of me like that and it was giving me a hard time and then i looked up and there was like sheep swaying like you know stupid cliff ages like man and kinda like animals doing things and it was so sweet and then it's like look up and this road just rolling in front of me across the top of the hill so I was like who cares he's in front of you he was really struggling like energy wise and he was coming up to Cheddar gorge and then this guy showed up. um dot looking and did the bell of him and started doing his bell and yelling my name, i had to start cr ying like a psycho for no reason.
I started crying because it was like he had been in pain for years and he just left me and then he was like flying into the garage. It's an amazing experience how it gets. you've been running in all kinds of weather conditions like going and we started you know you think about home and all and then you remember why you did it but it came out of nowhere like a fly I felt like stopping at that point and just touched the chime and that was like it cheered me up it was just amazing it's just the sun it's so nice really and you get up and it's beautiful like that it's been raining and then you get there this beautiful beautiful climb but yeah I don't know how many I'd be profiling.
I'm supposed to go between my rear end, my hip, and my knee. I don't need to be diluted there. i caught up with jack breen at cp 2 he had pulled a huge lead over second place michael rollerson it's jack hall when he was in cheddar gorge so i thought oh i'll catch him we caught up to angus young heading downtown for Wales with a sizeable lead. From about 85 miles I still enjoy it yeah it's annoying I was pretty slow yesterday just stopped a lot I don't know what was um and then I accidentally fell asleep on my alarm so I stayed in a hotel i set an alarm for like two hours and then like five hours later i woke up yeah i think it probably did me good yeah yeah chris not far behind probably like three four hours ago sorry yeah you did pretty ok yeah when i was asleep yeah because i saw there was like a pack of two or three of them now i have in the back of my head but i've had a huge dream so i'm great oh and he probably just has a couple hours in the bush 100 miles into the race and we catch up with chris and paul who are never more than three miles away it's clear that chris's abilities in the hills compared to paul's abilities on the plains means that they cannot distance themselves from each other and are They are constantly competing for second place.
I would settle for 3rd yesterday, yeah yeah I was running. to stay at the birth yeah i was a bit surprised this morning when chris pulled over early im trying not to look weird too often trying to handle everything else at the same time so four nights of very little sleep he It just reminded me that it's the main ninety percent of managing things and then from time to time I get excited, I enjoy the racing aspect and from time to time I have to manage everything else because of what happened, what? What did you do last night? totally hit the wall oh it was just almost nine o'clock wheels fell off good so i called early and fell asleep.
I found a field somewhere and had no food for nine hours. ride because they were never all closed oh subtitles not available it was pretty climbing yesterday wasn't it? I'm tired I keep thinking oh my god my back tire is flat oh yeah I'm like I keep looking at my back I'm like there's no air in there I'm not moving cause you're almost there yeah you're almost there yeah okay thanks, yes it looks like this protractor clip, yes this anchor just doesn't have any functionality. I feel my quad, which is fine because that's what I need to pedal, but since this hole down here to here is numb, what do you think is causing that?
This started to hurt up here and then my colleagues at the same time so I think there's a lot of pressure between them yesterday I turned on put my foot on a and went into a pothole and fell off and said yeah because I was planning on driving all night and after that, are you still following? Yeah, that's pretty amazing, thank you. you're smiling and laughing when you're telling the story, yeah, not many people do that, thanks, it's alright, everything gets blurry, doesn't it? the first couple of days or the first day and night we're good, so where are we on tuesday tuesday?
First of all, I left my. I spent the night in a room at Glastonbury and left the room around a quarter to five in the morning. the door was locked and as told by the owners I left a swipe card in the room and then realized I left my shoes hooked on the heated towel rail to dry so I took my shoes and had to wait three hours before of someone coming that morning just sitting there outside the room so that I was a little bit so destroyed, especially it was outside the window. I could actually see other cyclists go by, you know?
And then that day, in the middle of the afternoon, I started feeling sick, throwing up, and, um, I sat on a bench and then I fell asleep and then I got into my sleeping bag and I didn't get up from my bag until, probably around seven the next morning, I don't know what it was, I emptied myself overnight and sat for two days. I just had a horrible taste in my mouth I just didn't feel good I was hardly eating it I don't know how I moved because I couldn't face food and I would go to stores and look at food and just look at chocolate bars I love it you know and really just got my appetite back yesterday you know i finally got it but all my legs have been good you know the legs have always been there it's just stomach really how is your granddaughter oh well yeah yeah actually um i actually saw it yesterday from a gas station 4 court it was a little hard but i don't think she could understand what i was saying but she probably won't understand anyway she's only about three days old so she's still nice it didn't matter though yeah yeah she was good , Yes Yes. it was really good yeah you're making it emotional now yeah then yeah yeah yeah I know so as soon as I get home they're in Sheffield I'm Leicester but I'll find a way to get there. get up and give a proper hug that stupid stop line they have over where you're traveling to has stories to tell if you got to the end and said oh everything was good it's been a really steady ride i won't work with that really takes it all away and you it takes away all the comfort and ease that life gives you and makes you test your resilience on a daily basis with what you can and can't do or the challenges you can and can't overcome and it just takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you do questions you may not want answered i won't be the first up here i don't think i got to the metal barrier down there and then look up and think it's 940 miles i think i'm absolutely right it's pretty much the day after morning the most people are in bed they are not so well on friday the 9th at 2:00 p.m. past 2:00 p.m.
Angus Young, 25, rolls over the finish line in clandino and wins the

2021

bacon race. you an excited the whole time every time we saw you that's all you kept I was buzzing yeah the whole time I was like this it's amazing there's a couple moments where you're just riding and you think this is epic It's Like the sunset every night. I was in a good place, so the first night. The end of the earth. The next night. Stonehenge. After that, you may not have messed anything up below. it was right over the tip of the peninsula well i have no idea what time it is you took part in um in a proper race here was some sort of gentlemen's agreement this morning what was the gentlemen's agreement until we found breakfast ah nice um yours Legs were pretty done this morning hey but I think he's starting to work on It's possible that at this point in the race he'll pick himself up.
Exhaustion sets in on both runners. They push each other to the extreme. Chris takes a wrong turn while Paul has a 15-minute nap and they inevitably get together once more. Come on, we'll be testing each one. another one for about 40 miles 50 miles after that you know I would stretch on the climbs and I would just roll him up and get hard and he would dance up the hills with ease and then really I mean pretty easily and then we had a talk and we think we never get mad more than two or three minutes away from each other is kind of painful, you know, like there's a half hour difference you'd work on, right? you'd try and work to stay away but when you're just seeing each other r is blinking all the time we just had a chat and we think i think we should be better for each other's company right we're just going to bury ourselves for now again ?
We could have broken up an hour ago and I would have been in a mess and not enjoyed each other's company for the day so we've had a good day if we crush it we're going to end up here together and if we just go down yeah you meet people when you're doing well, especially when you're putting together this race and the people who come and sign up and then run in the race, they're almost friends before they even met because they relate to each other on so many levels that we're anyway, we all ride our bikes to get to places to experience new things to experience new places and the people you meet talk about the people they meet on the course he was so friendly it really gives you an idea how nice people in general talk to bikers it can be see it certainly life affirming for many people proving in conclusion doing it on a tt bike is not the formula what is the name of the bike company cletas that sponsors the um enigma? there are no riddles there i tell you they are right believe it or not this is their favorite place after every bike ride i clean yourself up right audrey?
Did you invent the places you wanted? uh not quite but i am excited yeah just go its something i never thought i would do and i have done you will love this travel accommodation settle down. Travelodge was full so I went and tried to sleep on a bench with a four bed blanket which was no good so I lay on the grass wrapped myself up and fell like a blanket. this is really comfortable then i woke up there are two policemen there it looks like we have reports of someone sleeping by the road doing tinfoil rafting oh we should have been quick enough to think im not seeing it but my fart fell off today fell off was stuck to my feet was so i'm going to have a scratch and i'm an angle i'll see i'll see my headphones wrapped around my pedals four days ago tonight my page um um ah hey you're a legend
