Plushie Makeover: First Time Custom With NerdECrafter

May 29, 2021
Hi, it's me, today I'm doing something a little different, a little experimental and I'm not even totally sure if it's going to work. I'm making this video with my friend Jackie, whose channel is nerd crafter, be sure to check it out. Take out the video of her too because she will try the same thing. I'm sure most of you are already familiar with her content, but if not, she really likes reviewing craft kits and different things with clay and sculpting. I'll leave it. The links to her everywhere what we're doing is a stuffed animal

makeover

I don't know, let me get mine.

I have a whole collection of soft mallows. I thought they would be perfect for something like this because they are so simple. really cute designs, it's not like we're going to change something horrible into something cute, they're already pretty cute, oh they're cute, but they're really simple so I think they'd be good as something I can add. We have eight options here, so they are odorless. I have a rough idea of what I want to do with these, but I don't have a concrete plan yet. Oh, hello, dear, oh, that's a pegasus. I was wondering what this is, apparently. a pegasus looks like a purple pig with wings pegasus also works I hate that my ring light is always reflecting I might kill you one of these days I think this should be pretty interesting I've never seen anyone do this and I've definitely never done it myself, so this will be an experiment.

, but we'll see now, boom, okay, so it's a panda. I always have to start with the most obvious statement. Even if you're not a marshmallow connoisseur like me, they are super soft, a little squishy and shaped like marshmallows which is very cute, however I want to try adding some limbs to mine, I know that defeats the whole look of marshmallow, so look at this boom, okay, it's not a mellow squish anymore, so we can get it out of our brains. Now, this is an unmarked victim for my creativity.

Congratulations, I will use some felt to create my accessories. I have this incredible variety. I already have several colors available and I think they will work for my purposes. I'm going to need some black and some white. In fact, this cream color matches much better. Okay, cool, I'm doing some arms and some feet. This is my sewing box. which isn't used very often I found a needle and some thread to go with my felts felt good get out of here starting with the arms I'm just going to look at the shape I'm making like little limbs flapping oh she's waving say hello hello I'm using this shape as a template you can't see at all the frame is essential here and I had four of them pair them with their soulmates oh thread needle thread the needle ah okay let me tell you this is not a tutorial sewing, I mean, I don't think you really want me as your sewing teacher anyway, I have no idea what I'm doing, but I've figured out how to use a needle and some thread to knit it and through two pieces of fabric and stitching them together and hey, when you speed up the footage that much, it looks like I actually know what I'm doing, even though my sewing education consists of my 11 year old self sitting on my bedroom floor trying to figure out how to make clothes for my stuffed animals.

Wow, I've changed a lot. I have this very wobbly sewn limb and I'm going to turn it around. I'm going to make another one of those, let's all admire. my bravery for clapping while holding a needle, thank you somehow, this little loop developed, that happens some

time

s, it's totally normal, but don't worry, keep it, it's okay, I have this huge polythene bag that I have always had, grabbing a handful of it. and we're going to stuff the stuffing inside the stuffed animal and all that's left to do now is just sew them together and you can't see anything when it's black thread on black fabric oh, it's cute and here comes the other boom, it's got arms. oh girl, no, no, you have to shave, that, grab the cream, I felt like my little feet were cut, terrible transition, I literally changed hands, selum, magic toes, magic toes, their feet all together, I think they looks good, I mean, good, it looks good, there's actually something wrong here and That's when I realized that pandas have black legs, that's why this looks so strange.
So with a scalpel, I'm going to remove their legs and, starting from the beginning, save you from having to watch the whole process again. Here I attach the new legs that look like this. much better, so now we have a panda with limbs that can't be the end, oh no, no, so I'm cutting one, two, just two little cones that join them together, oh my god, a mistake. I missed it, you just witnessed the attempt. murder and I'll see you in court now I'm opening up some fabric paint oh my gosh I'm so happy to see you, this whole

time

it's been needles and thread.
I'm painting some lines to make this look like an The ice cream cone is quite tricky to paint on such a furry surface, but we've got this, let's make it happen. Flip it over and click. The other side is ready. Oh, look at that mistake. Yes, fortunately you won't be able to see it. at the end because I'm going to be rolling under the edges anyway and this ice cream cone goes on top of our panda's head. We're doing the upside down ice cream cone thing again. Look, it's not new to me, but usually when I try it. something for the

first

time like

custom

izing

plushie

s I'm left with a very familiar design because I can only handle one new thing at a time I'm very sensitive those are some gnarly looking spots and now here's where it gets a little weirder stop saying hello Now you're starting to look desperate.
In fact, I'm going to paint the stuffed animal. Yes, yes, you heard it. I really wanted to add the ice cream on his head. I guess I could have cut some felt into a little splatter shape. and then I sewed some more, but ah, I'll just paint, of course I'm using fabric paint so this paint doesn't crack or crumble, but it's still kind of weird like moving the little fibers around with the paint and trying to decide which way to go. What way to put them is like a very thick hair gel or something. Also, this was extremely stressful because once the paint sticks to that furry fabric, it's over, it's there, it doesn't go away, so I have to be very careful once it dried completely.
I did it again with a second coat, so I'm just trying to smooth everything out as best I can. I should have worked harder to get the entire fur to lie flat in one direction. with the first layer quick inventory we have arms we have legs we have ice cream we have ice cream cone what's missing how about these without sprinkles so clearly I could put the sprinkles on the ice cream that would make sense the thing is that although I did it I didn't want to put all the details concentrated in one area because I felt like then the rest of the body would look a little plain in comparison, so instead of putting the sprinkles in the ice cream, I just put them all over the panda and now for the sprinkle song, she has the type demon eye what happens anyone remember the demon eye palette yeah same vibe so I'm adding some little highlights in her eyes to help with that and once it's dried I flip it over and poof spray The original is probably more of a crowd pleaser.
It's simple, but I love that mine is now completely unique. It is

custom

ized. It's with my own style. I love it. Hey, we talked about it's not as dramatic of a

makeover

as you would with something like. a soft one because I'm not painting every inch of it, I'm actually just adding to what's already there, so I think this has a whole new feel to it and I'm really happy with it, let's move on to the next little creature, the owl It's adorable, the cat is awesome, but actually I think I'm going to choose the dinosaur that reminds me of someone, pickle, so this looks like pickle, the dinosaur minus all the colorful spots and freckles, plus pickle isn't Big Deal. a smile with just a few changes, I could easily turn this into a pickled dinosaur, but you know, I want to be a little more challenging than that.
I'm going to make this a monster because Jackie is known for her creatures and monsters. and we've decided to use each other as inspiration for one of our

plushie

s, so I had to dig really deep and find out what really scares me. I have it so rainbow as one of my favorite things, but what if we change? the order of the colors here, um, just move it around, okay, yeah, yeah, perfect, suddenly this is scary, I'm already scared, this area here is the perfect shape of a rainbow, so I'm going to paint a rainbow , but in its complete and correct form. order oh it hurts, I'm hurt, so if you don't understand already, it bothers me a little when the colors of a rainbow are in the wrong order, that doesn't mean that every time something is colorful it has to be. in rainbow order, it's okay to just have stripes of colors in no particular order, but if you're making a literal rainbow, then yes, I would like the colors to be in the correct order.
Thank you, this is completely and totally wrong, the colors are in the wrong place we have a mix of saturated colors, pastel colors, muted colors, all in a complete mismatched mess. I hated it this time. I definitely did a much better job of really smoothing out all the little fibers and getting them to sit nicely. I'm going to move on to another area, their cute frilly spines, they're too friendly, they have to go, so this is the first time I've pulled something out of a stuffed animal and then placed three sheets of colored felt on it, no.
It really matters, I'm going to paint over these anyway, I'm layering them to create a little more thickness. I'm using the old spine as a guide to create a more monstrous new spine, grabbing some fabric glue and I'm going to glue each layer and then I place it under a pile of my old textbooks that were left for a couple of hours and I read it again and guess what happened, none of that is the layers not sticking, whatever the glue says, not recommended for felt. I'm pretty sure Jackie is using the same fabric glue and having success with it, maybe it's the type of felt I'm using or maybe it's just me.
I mean, would we be surprised? No, I'll just move on to plan B. I'm cutting my piece completely, it always comes to this when things go wrong, you know, I have to get the hot glue out, even my hot glue had some trouble holding these pieces together, but that's okay , I don't really need a rock-solid join here. I just need something that will hold up long enough so I can paint over all of this while I was at it, I put together some antlers. I'm going to paint all of this using the same scary rainbow that I used on the plushie and this again is fabric paint. which is great because it also works as a very strong glue so once the paint dries these pieces will be nice and sealed securely and here is my little invention to hang it up to dry, cool yeah , and six hours later I will return on the other side. finish that and of course I'm going to add each color on the horns, naturally.
I really enjoyed this process because it's about customizing the decor, being creative like I love to do, but I don't have to make it from scratch, which I have done in the past and I really love the two handmade plushies I made, but never the more I made more because I don't really enjoy the process of trying to figure out the template and attach the body and all that, my picks. They are finished and try it quickly. I'm going to sew this, which should be a lot of fun considering how thick and sturdy this piece is.
Alright. I took out my thimble and I know how to use it. I think it was definitely a struggle. I kept knotting the thread and then I don't really know how to deal with it, it's hard to start but then once you secure the first part it goes much faster. I pricked myself many times and I never stopped saying it. owie ow, why am I saying owie? What is it? I've never realized that I say that sounds so stupid. I finally secured this completely. I think it came out a little too far in the front, but it's okay and now the horns are being put on just those, you know it's not very intimidating, are you laughing at me too quickly?
I'm going to touch up the orange on the horns because it got a little buried in the confusion and I want to bring it out again and then I'm thinking it needs some angry eyebrows to really scare us, you know, oh, it's scary, I'm going to add some points here too to show that he's, he's very tough, you know, he has some enemies that he's not afraid of, um, you know, battle. or something like that, so here it is, it's the anti-rainbow monster. I definitely prefer this new version because the original seemed like a less special pickle.
I think what I've done here definitely makes it a little more interesting. I could see people thinking. I didn't go far enough with the monster thing, it's not scary enough, you know, maybe you wanted blood and guts and all that kind of crap, but I think it's a little scary, it looks a little like a court jester. who is in a rock band or target practice, but no, he is the anti-rainbow monster that terrorizes rainbows, who would be his victims? I'm even grabbing the stuffed squirrel, ooh, extra snacks. At first I thought it was a chipmunk, so the partback of the box confirms this.
It's a squirrel, first of all, get rid of that loose thread and I think I want to add some arms to this. Remember those feet I took from the panda, the feet of a panda or the arms of another squirrel and I'll save myself some time too. hooray Yeah, I'm just going to clean out some of those old guts and then start sewing them up until I figure out, yeah, why are his arms sticking out of his stomach? Those need to be higher, so let's try again and again. Somehow, what the hell ended up in the exact same place again?
Okay, I'm not kidding this time, I'm not doing this again and somehow it ended up a little lower than I wanted, but you know, this is okay. The number of times I've lost my needle, I definitely have at least two loose needles floating around my art room, so I can expect a nice surprise at some point, eventually I pulled out my pin cushion to keep it secured somewhere. How cute, my mom crocheted this for me. The pins are like sparks once I've secured them. Yes, with my knot facing out. Admire it. He has arms. They are so wide and flat that they look like wings.
Oh, she is one. Flying Squirrel I think she needs some accessories, so I'm going to make her a cute acorn. I drew the shape with a marker. You know it every time you make an acorn for your flying squirrel plush. Do not do this. The ink turned into kind of a mess and I hated myself for it and then I'm painting the details on the acorn. I love acorns. Okay, they are one of my many obsessions. I just think they are so cute. I'm going to make a back for this and glue that. with hot glue, this is not a seam that will need a lot of force.
I may collect stuffed animals and use the word owie owie again, but you won't see me playing with these, at least not during the week, no, these are for display. They just don't really need to be durable, but I still just went for glue on the seams that would never have any stress on them and here you go my love, oh she's so happy so I put a couple of stitches on it to hold that up. instead, she doesn't fly anymore, which is kind of sad, but now she has an acorn, okay, do you want to stay in the frame for like two seconds?
What the hell is happening here? I'm going to give it wings. Yeah, those are some wings. details and it's time for it to shine. I'm using a little pastel chalk to give her rosy cheeks, putting on her eyelashes and a little glitter on her eyes. Come on, I think she needs one more accessory. Perfect, I'm going to cut the length a little. I removed that tie into a perfect little bow where the satin finish faces outwards and I'll play around with the position by sewing a little bit just then the edges of the ribbon started to fray so I'm trimming them. and using a little clear nail polish to seal those edges to prevent them from fraying in the future and that's it, I mean I think this one was already really cute, but oh it's so cute it has so much more personality now that it has accessories, two of my favorite things.
Bows and acorns are included here. I love it, so here are my three personalized plushies. I really had no idea how I was going to do this at first, but I think it turned out really cool with each of the plushies I tried to experiment with. some different techniques and ways to customize them, let me know if you would be interested in seeing me customize any of the remaining plushies. I want to thank Jackie, this was a really fun idea and I'm so excited to see what she ends up creating. Thanks everyone for watching and we'll see you next week.
Bye bye.
