Plex, Pi Hole, Surveillance, VPN, Deep Learning, is there anything QNAP can't do?Jun 06, 2021
Okay good morning everyone, thanks for joining us for the second webinar of this four part series and if you're joining us today from the UK I hope you managed to get set up for lockdown two without much trouble and I hope don't be too hard on yourself and don't forget if you attend all four webinars in this mini-series for your chance to win a two-bay NAS with two eight terabyte hard drives arriving just in time for Christmas as well Make sure you signed up for the next two sessions and if you missed the last time then it was a pretty good session all in all on how to securely access your NAS over the web so check it out our YouTube channel if you missed it. where you can find all these webinar videos as well as directly posted content that we didn't post live today and it should be another great webinar.
Craig will essentially walk us through everything you can do with
qnapnas in an attempt to see if you can Reload it so if you already know how much you can do on a keynote you know this is going to be a pretty quick session so if you have any questions as we go along and please hit them in the chat box as you come up with them so we can answer them while we're on the subject and so craig to you thank you very much tom um so yeah today we're going to stop by effectively by the
qnapapp center and we'll try to click install on most of the apps we have specifically the ones made by keynap and we've added a couple that we didn't make ourselves so from our third party partners and we're going to review them all running demos to show you that they're actually active it's not just icons for icons' sake we're actually running all of them um and the cool thing here is that it's all going to e star working i'm showing you today everything is going to be working um on this specific nas so everything will be on this nas we're not running some of the apps on other nas um i picked a midrange nas here so just to cover the specs of the nas and this is a tvs-872 xt so the spec of the drives on this i have um eight 10 terabytes uh wd red pros and really nice drives um you know 3d active balance plus they have the naswer3 firmware um so you can get seamless integration and better reliability and they have a five year warranty which is nice and I have a couple of SSDs added in the m.2 slots and they are the uh the wd black sn750 nvmes just small only 500 gigs I'm just using them for a little bit of speedup on the hard drives just to make things a little snappier for a few different applications which I'll show you to give you a view of the configuration of the nas itself so this drive has a six core i5 cpu and i have 16 gigs of ram so this is the exact spec we sell i haven't added any extra hardware to make it t faster um you'll see a bit later i put a couple of extra things on the back of the nose but we'll get to that and why did I do it a little later in the session um so a lot of this stuff may not have huh I guess that makes a lot of sense why would you run all of this in one now ? you can do it with a nas um so we have as many apps as possible running and so we're going to go through all these apps so you have them listed here. so within the app sensor i clicked install and everything that makes sense and tried not to duplicate it too much for example if i have a media server installed i won't install a second one just because that's a bit overkill to do that and the first one I'll talk about is our qsync core app so for anyone not familiar with qsync central t This is an app that effectively turns yonaz into a Dropbox-like app so um qsync instead of having to use a service provided in the cloud so let's say like dropbox you don't have to pay to work with them so i have a free dropbox account.
More Interesting Facts About,
plex pi hole surveillance vpn deep learning is there anything qnap can t do...
For example it only gives you five gigs of space if you pay a lot per month you can get a terabyte of space but in this example I have the total available capacity of those wd red pro drives 10 terabytes. here to play and I don't have any subscription charges to worry about so with qsync here this allows me to have a laptop that synced up so if we go to the details here of the online user um I have I have a user who just from calling webinar that was added so I have the only device connected so I have my macbook air sitting next to me that is connected and it's syncing and you can get basic information you can go through different management options you can choose to have webinar folders team and so any data that needs to be shared between everyone in your organization or your user group, you can have specific folders that are shared between everyone and as you go through all the different options you can share some things with qsync other things without and the best thing is with the small application that you can install on the local windows or mac machine we also have options for ios and android and you can do a synchronization offline cation of data so if you ever had to get on a plane and wanted to work on some files that were on your nas at the office qsync would allow you to sync a few selected folders directly to your local machine so you also have offline access to it so this is the first service we have running so we have qsync enabled on this nas next up is our hybrid backup sync app so obviously we've covered this in sessions above so I won't go into too much detail but it's one of the services that I've never really talked about or shown is that we have Apple Time Machine support on the device so I have time machine I have it enabled to work with the local qts account, so that each user connecting to the NAS can get their own dedicated bit of storage and thus inside the NAS, I've created I've made a folder called time machine and assigned it as time machine backups so if I were to scroll down here I have time machine and we can see that I have the macbook air that's sitting next to me side doing a time machine backup here so right now with just one machine doing a backup I have a folder with everything in there for that backup if you have multiple machines using time machine backup on this folder you would also see all the different names of all the machines here in this location so this data is encrypted by Apple Time Machines so the data is not visible between users so it is protected despite that they can all be in the same folder the data is not shared between different us ers and so we also have the time machine service running on this and all the other servs Starts can also be enabled if you want to back up to other nas or cloud sources you can do all of that within this same app which doesn't use a lot of extra resources to do the different options there one of the extra options I've enabled on this nas is our hybrid mount app so hybrid mount allows you to mount a remote location now that can be another nas in a shared folder on a different server or it can be a cloud location so i have two mounted connections on this one so if I were to go to the mount management on the left we can see I have my qnap google drive account which is in sync and so there's a total amount of 100 gigs of cloud space in there and I can see all 100 gigs of that capacity right on my nas and it's also shared on the smb shares so if I look here on the file station and look at the left hand side men ú and it's going to give me all the different slim gs options I've synced and we can see the google drive sync is there too so even though this data isn't necessarily stored directly on my computer or my nas, you can choose whether the data is cached or not, as well as I have not accessed these two files, these two files are still in the cloud, so you can see the cache status has a cloud icon next to it , but I can always say keep the cache fallback if that's a folder or a file I want. constant access to so that's what i would do with um i would sync it locally so it's always on the nas always up to date i don't have to wait for the initial download to come from the cloud so i can force some files to be manually kept on the nas itself same, um, someone here asks the question, mike, did you create the folder called time machine or was it created automatically? time machine folder I think it's on the next page so here inside of time machine if I go to the settings for this folder there's an option here that allows you to say this is the folder that's right at the bottom you set this folder as the time machine backup folder so the folder can be called whatever you want it doesn't have to be called time machine and you can set it to be absolutely whatever you want just check this box effectively checking this box turns on Apple's bonjour protocol or service which allows the time machine to discover um the backup destination so if I were to go here and go into my machine preferences so when you click select a backup drive inside the time machine, you need something that announces itself as, uh, that the backup location d um it won't just go back to any font it has to be Time Machine compatible and checking this box effectively does that for you ok so we'll get past that this is how you do it thanks for the question mike um , so yes, this is a hybrid mount. anyway like this with hybrid mount you can do this and i also have another folder here which is virtual um on a different server so i have a different nas here and a different ip address than this this one is at 50.29 this one is at 50.5 so everything here is completely network cached so now i've basically mounted it to a remote network folder on this nas so i don't have to give users access to every nozzle i might have i could mount the remote folders of the other nodes right here and if we go back to the hybrid mount we can see that we have the remote devices section where that is also enabled so it's very easy to set the different options there with if you want a remote device on your local network maybe you're on a remote network or you want to use one of the cloud providers that's there too we have that as an option so one of the extra features I've added egated here is q search so q search is our way of doing instant searches so no one miliar with a mac um would know that you have the search highlighted where you can press command and space and you can type
anythingto search on your local mac that isn't very good when you talk about network locations because you have to go catalog the network location and if you have 50 mac users in your office each of those mac users have to catalog the network location it's a lot of network traffic if you can use search q it's much easier to find content so here if i was to type something like tsh 886 and press enter it will go off and find everything to do with that particular filename on the device if i want segment it to only images, music, pdf documents, you know you can be very selective about it when you find the results and you can also include things that are not over a certain age or a certain size, you have lots of filtering options and when you click on the item you can take a quick look at the file and it will just lift just a quick look at t hat that specific file so you can see it instead of downloading um the w
holefile so those were also created thumbnails for you so it's very quick and easy to access
anythingwithin that and we have some additional advanced features but depending on then as you go with them this may be included or you may have to go premium and buy a license its pretty low cost but you can get a license for some extra features but for most people the basic options included will be enough to browse files and find things its a pretty smart search to go see the different options we have there one of the additional options running on this nas is our download station app so it's a is an option that will download from many different services so if you were to add a download test you can either click the input url or you can add torrent files so if you don't want to download the file directly to your local machine, you might want it to download, it's a very large file that will take overnightin downloading you can try your nas to do that download for you instead of leaving say your laptop on and then next time you log in your nas has already downloaded that file for you so here I did some torrents uh the turrent downloads so i have a few versions of the different linux distros out there so i downloaded them all on the nas and you can sit there and you can see the files too um so if your computer wasn't turned on at all times and wanted to see the data again.
This is an option to do it. Obviously, you know that we don't place any restrictions on what types of torrent files you want to add here if you want. to put them from any source that's no problem um so yeah we have a lot of different options there's even a bittorrent search there um there's a function you can use to type something so if you want to go find a ubuntu iso file for example you can type it in the search box a and we're going to look for the links for you to download there so download station 5 also runs directly on this nas and that's all the time outputting the data and you can set a lot of different permissions here so here in settings for example with bittorrent you can choose to have different options you can set bandwidth limits on different things you can say you just want timeshares to be seen until you get to a certain period of time or when a certain ratio is also reached so there are a lot of different options within here and we even support rss feeds too so if you want to do r rss updates from a particular site to capture any files that come out at a specific time it will automatically download the files if prompted so that's the download station huh next option is our photo management software which will calls humaji so qmaggi is a smart photo app and it uses ai um to classify the items you see in the different pictures it creates thumbnails you can add keywords to the different items so you can search and find different items and it will also do some very clever stuff with the AI like finding different things so here we have different options we didn't put any person inside ours so it's grayed out right now but all I've done here is add a bunch of photos in a folder i told kumaji that photo is where my photos are and it went out and it was decided to understand different things like animals c omit trees, you know that all this is done automatically I did not tell him that these were animals or these were cattle or something like that, for example, if I enter the category of animals there is a dog and there are images of cows, but if I go here to the cattle, the two images of the cows, so it's very, very easy for you to go and find a specific item and all these tags that have been added that you can use. those to create albums so if you wanted to say you have all the photos of a lake that you've ever taken you can create a smart album which will use the content found from the images to automatically create a smart album if you want so if we go back to the options you can also put keywords so I created a keyword for dogs so here we have two different options here so there's a dog on that image and then there's a dog on the main image so you can create them and add the tags whenever you want so when you're on a specific element here you have different options at the top so you can go in and edit the tags if you want to add a different tag to it so you might want to add another tag as there grass in this you can say I want to add the um tag to create the word grass so now it's there and now I have a second keyword that says there is a p I'm wrong and there's grass in that picture so it's really easy to do I've also created a smart album down here so this smart album shows me um all the pictures on my nose were taken in 2015 like this which if you were to edit the album we can see here the name of the album is 2015 selections and i have many different filters and i set the date it was taken is all the way from 1st january to the end of the year 2015 no other requirements i just told it which folder i wanted to go to and search everything else is fully set to any so it will pick up any image that matches this criteria and here i have an album that has been created uh so you can see all the different options that there's um i see a question here from dad uh kumeji uh it uses a lot of memory and slows down the nas it doesn't really it's uh once you have the images loaded it's actually a very passive app obviously if you were to add 1500 images, say os which will fire up and do some things in the background like generating thumbnails and trying to identify things, places, keywords that went in there for example we had a client last week send me some Lightroom images of its separate software and i wanted to know if the keywords would carry over to this software if the tags would still work and they do so there are different options you can get different items in there and we also have a places option here so an incident occurred unfortunate not too long ago so someone hit the car but here because it was taken on my smartphone here is different information and it shows you where that incident occurred from the geotag that's on the um that's on the photo here so you can see where the item is and you can also create smart albums based on these geotags so if you want to config Create a smart album um that was to show you every photo that was taken in England or a specific area of England, you can very easily create a smart album for every photo of a certain set of coordinates as well, so yeah that's Kimaji, It's a ve It's a very cool piece of software and very powerful as well, so if you want to commit to putting your entire photo collection in here, you get some very useful extras thrown in and intelligence that works with that, so yeah, it's got a lot.
There are different options there and you can create normal albums or smart albums. Smart albums are probably a bit more useful because you can customize them a lot more, whereas when you create a regular album, you really just say I want one of these albums. photos and you go and choose some files whereas if you create a smart album you can get creative with using the ai fan tags that are there i have a question here from dirk he says kumeji supports live photos from iphone great question Dirk I'm not sure. I'll check after the session and get back to you.
A question from John who says I have thousands of images on kumaji and it works great including access via mobile VPN to my home. a customer tomer right into the session already using it in their um environment with a lot of images and says it works absolutely great really how many images are in qmagi doesn't really make a difference to the resources when you add the images that's when the resources are used while preparing the contents and ranking things and keywords once the images are added to kumeji it doesn't really change anything you know the image is not evolving into something else you know if it was an image of a dog will still be a photo of a dog a couple of years from now you don't have to re-scan that file or do anything unless you make a change to the file or edit the photo and that's the software it's completely free for you i can install it directly on most of our now so yeah very very powerful with the ai component that goes with it so by the way qmij actually has a sister app that works na with it which is called kumaji core which is automatically installed in the background so actually q magic is two apps running at the same time so one is doing the AI it's doing but it's the one display of the different photos so the following is a
plexmedia server that i have installed and i won't go into too much detail about
plexbecause the last session in this series just before christmas talks about plex in much more detail, so here we have a few different things that i've added so i've added a few different trailers so this is running on the same nas before we move to the spot.
Just got a couple more questions, any limits on number of tags per launcher and total. manager for you there as I'll go find out and get back to you after the shoot um I know I put 50 tags on a photo earlier and it was absolutely fine but I'll go and check if there is any hard limit there nicholas question about kumaji can you deal with the same image in two different formats? be listed twice as far as I know I wouldn't combine them into one um but I would probably add it to the system uh completely two more times I'll check with the product manager for you and get back to you on that Maybe with the amount of questions here about humanity, it might be worth doing a total humanity session in the future as well just so we have a little more information for you and so here with the uh with the plex media service i got it working i added a folder called movies so inside the movies folder i have a lot of different items that are here and i can click play on any of these items so here if i scroll maybe let me mute it there so that plays absolutely perfectly right from the nas itself, so at the same time it's doing everything we've talked about, so kumaji still runs in the background, everything else, um, it's still doing all the other tasks that I've said and haven't talked about, so I can be a media server, you know I could have had a smart TV in the other living room, play files if I wanted to and play video files on a couple of different machines if you wanted different different tvs playing content mobile devices plex makes a great mobile app that works with it too so this is the blex media server and just an illustration.
I didn't put any of these movie posters on there for anyone unfamiliar with plex. All I did was put a file in a folder. which i have called movies on the nas and named the file correctly eg with tennis here i just called that file tenet space 2020 then put it in the folder plex is looking for my movies plex will then copy paste that name from file on a website like imdb or something and it will retrieve all the information about that movie so if you were to click on all these faces of everyone that's actually in the movie um I didn't put any of those in there that's all e by uh plex scraping the content from um internet sources and all these files here are stored directly on the nas so none of this is actually online once the movie is added download all this for local content um it shows any related movies that might be interesting based on that which works much better when you have a lot more movies added in plex um but if you wanted to see all the movies you have with robert pattinson ok example you can just click on it and it will show all the movies you have with robert pattinson so its very easy to use plex look we have a question there from yemi how do you update the plex firmware on the nas? go to the app center you can upload here and you can do an install manually if you want the absolute latest downloads i would go to plex for the download so if i were to go here to go to plex downloads in my search you can choose to download plex from them directly and you get the much more up to date versions and you can choose different nas options so if you were to choose the plex media server for a qnap you can click choose package which will actually download the package um the queue what a qnap need to install it directly on your nas once you have the file come back here to your nas screen and just find the file and upload it here and click install it takes about 30 seconds to update the app its very good and instead of having to go to the plex website manually if there is an app update when you click on the plex media server you will actually see at the top right the activity type if there is an update it shows up here in this menu and it will say you have an update and you'll see a little yellow up arrow next to the activity button there um so it will let you know as soon as you log into this interface if there is an update and it's very easy for you to do the update in the app for the machine there I see a second question here from Daniel about plex he has a ts431 xcu but plex doesn't work how is that possible?
Then you would just need a different version of the software, so if you went to the plex download list, they would offer you the download.for the app on different configurations uh so the plex app I'm using is the x86 or x64 version so it's kind of a 64 bit Intel AMD CPU version but they also make an ARM based one as well like that ts431 xcu is an arm base now you would have to download the arm based software version it doesn't have as many features as the x86 or 64 bit version but yeah you can usually get it for in most cases if you visit the plex website and it goes to its own download section they might have a few different versions available for you ok so the next app I'm going to talk about here is our qvpn so qvpn service that I covered in the session uh last time on how to secure your nas and i said different things like that but just to illustrate i have it working here too i have a client currently connected via our q belt service which is running so this will rvice also runs in the background, just to illustrate exactly how the nas is doing with everything I've covered so far if I were to go here to our resource panel we can see that I only have 43 percent RAM usage and the CPU is very lightly used there that's with everything I've been running it on, so it's actually not that bad with all the different options we have.
Now let's start moving on to some of the heavier apps, the ones that really take a toll on cpu usage and especially ram um so first here is our qvr elite app uh you might be familiar with our qvr pro option a qvr elite is kind of the next iteration we have um it's a little bit more efficient than qvr pro so instead of needing four gigs of ram to run we've done a lot of efficiency upgrades with the mongodb that powers the back end so what now just need two gig ram ad which should allow us to open this software our qvr software to work on non intel or amd nas also now so arm dock now lowest cost and now you should be able to use this um the only difference really is qvr pro it's perpetual license and it's subscription based license here for qvr elite um but the prices are pretty good so if you want to go check out our Our software store we have a few different licenses up there so inside qvr elite I have two cameras added so I have two free licenses so I have both cameras added so if I were to open the client software I have here and log into this nas um we can go and take a look at kind of the live view of these two cameras so here we'll connect them so you've created a view of all the cameras so I have the two different cameras that I have so I have a front lawn ng look another at my office window here looking out and here with this one because I have this one selected and it's a pan tilt zoom ptz camera so I can change the angle to I can move it to the left uh I can move it to the right or I can also do some pretty intense zoom options so if I wanted to get fully zoomed in on something in the distance you have a lot of different options there which e can be used within the camera, so everything is integrated within the interface and if you want those controls directly on the image, you can also have those controls directly within the screen so you can actually achieve pretty good precision. although within the dot and the different zoom options we have there a very very good very powerful option but this is the qvr software it looks a lot like the qvr pro software it's just a little bit more efficient than the client software here it's absolutely identical the only one and what it changes is it just says qvr elite in the top left if you're logged into a qbr elite machine and someone you're asking huh then jerome is asking if it supports qvr elite qvr guard and the fallback mouse does so so you can add qvr guard to qvr pro or qvr elite which is the same component that hasn't changed. so if your main recording solution fails qvr guard will take over yes it fully supports that i haven't added it in this but yeah it fully supports that and that's our qvr elite software so it is also executed directly. on the nas at the same time as everything else we have so the next one I'll talk about is the container station so the container station is really the place where you can add different features to your nas and maybe if it doesn't have a built in app in the app center for it and so for e example here i have a minecraft server running directly on this now so minecraft you know one of those popular games um we don't have an app to run that natively on the nas but here you can run that on the nas if you want and it's so easy to set up you literally create click create on the left you find whatever you want so if you were to search for minecraft it pops up and you click create it's it will shutdown and install it. you can click on the item and it will give you things like default passwords and things you need to access the server but you can change those after you've set it up but this is a really easy way to add a few different items in there so , the first one here is that I have a wordpress website running so it's actually added as two separate containers, one is the back end database that feeds it and the front end, the admin screens web they run a different one so if I were to come here to a new window and go to the word press site I have running so here's a pretty basic wordpress site I've added to the now so not really i have put no content on it but that is the main nas and if you go to the wp admin slash at the end that will take you to the back end where you can control all of this for anyone unfamiliar with the running blogs or something like that this is a great way to run blogs or a website you can even do things like ecommerce on there so it allows you to run it even if there is no native app and our qts based now has one native app so you didn't have to run that in a container if you didn't want to to make it a little easier to set it up differently but yeah there are different options.
I see we just have a couple additional questions here about qbr elite, so josh is asking what exactly is qvr elite? I would call a software nvr or a content management solution for your cameras so it will allow you to have IP cameras and it will record them and you can set different things like motion detection events and how long you want the cameras to be record for things like that you already have licenses no but if your cameras are currently working on qbr pro the exact same supported list of cameras will work on elite so with pro for example you have eight cameras free up to 14 days of recording and so if it was good you can move them to elite um just be one you want to get two free licenses with elites you get eight free with qvr pro and it's subscription based lighting but they're pretty low cost so yeah very easy um someone else here is saying do you support unified controller um are unified cameras natively supported in qvr so not natively supported no dire ctly but that would be really unified they don't have a certification method of say adding different cameras um so if I were to add different cameras in the list um we have a couple ubiquiti network cameras in there I can add another one there to illustrate, uh, but yeah, the different cameras um that you guys add.
You can still get them to work you just have to add them um with an rtsp stream so when you add the camera you'll have to add it as a generic model so here you have a generic rtsp so with this one you just have to make sure put the ports right so you need to get the rtsp your url usually you can get it from the unify forums usually you don't need a username and password to access you just have to match the port. and the url and you can add the unified cameras here but they won't add as a unified brand model on the left side but they work you can add them and there's a video on youtube I think the guy is called crosstalk solutions actually has done it in one of our n Like and it worked fine ok so John's question was just asking for a quick demo of the pot
holesuch a great place there John at the container station had our circular hole solution there , so if I were to access my pi hole that I'm running on. the network here so the pihole is a dns filter i'll write the wrong ip it'll autocomplete too here we go so this is the circular hole i have running so the circular hole is a dns filter um if so you want on my network here um, i have all the machines with the dns ip address pointed to 192.168.50.
So if I were to illustrate that and I go over here to my network interface and I look at my interface we can see that the dns server is set to the same IP address as the pi hole so any dns request it makes goes to first go to the pie hole and the pie parlor has um aggregate domain lists of things that are approved or not approved to access, for example, if I were to go do a Google search on one of our products, so let's have a Please look at the actual product I'm testing with here so we can see here.
I can see that there are some here that have the right to add, so if I were to click on the actual product page for qnap, that would take me directly to the qnap page. that will be allowed and it will work i will click on it just to test it and that will go directly to our own website and i can get to it but now this ad here says ebay or one of our partners who is selling our nas or broadband buyer here at the top if i were to click on this link because it's an ad if it doesn't go directly to the broadband buyer it will go viral on google ad services so when i click on it it says i can't connect to the server so if i ever really wanted to click that i can get to the circle hole here i can go to the disable option and i can just disable the circle hole for 10 seconds so if i were to come back here i go back to a section and now click on it now the google ad services link is working and now it lets me through and when i go back to the pi hole after the countdown ends now a is re-enabled so now if I were to go back and click one of these ad links again let me click the one for ebio this time maybe there isn't a tracking link for one to work , but no ads appeared so one was fine but that will let you bypass the dns filter option so this is a really great option and the best thing about it is because you can't do things like um blockers ads and popup blockers on mobile sometimes especially if it says to play a game and it's full of ads and the best thing about it is that if your mobile is on the network and you also have your IP address set for the options dns transfer, it will also block all ads on your mobile devices so it's a really great option it's completely free and very easy to set up as a container right on the nas and c so it doesn't use resources to do it hope that covered it for you there john um i have a question here from yemi is there any downside to using nas hard drives only for all these applications along with qvr nvr software?
Are there any disadvantages to using nasa disks? No, you can use nas hard drives to do anything within the mvr software. They are good but there are different. options if you were using your nas um specifically to just do
surveillanceapplications drive manufacturers like wd make a variety of drives called purple um that are dedicated for doing um cctv applications so they are a little better suited for doing the c The constant read writes you get from having a lot of cameras being added but not drives will work great for that application if you're using it for other things, but if it's primarily used as a cctv server um you might want to consider something like a dedicated purple drive, ok, are there any other questions here? um, someone is asking, is there a way that I can watch previous webinars?
I used qnap for time machine backup and it saved my sanity on more than one occasion. Wow if you just do a Google search for the qnap YouTube channel you should see two results there and the UK is where we host our webinars but we have our parent company um based in Taiwan which produces a lot of of good content of the product. managers who are also there on their own youtube channel too um yeah so i see a secondQuestion. I'll get back to you in that geographic location that's not really related to this session, but I'll get back to you. your about that ok and now we'll move on to the next thing so we also have on this device.
I said at the beginning of the session that I added an add-in card in the back, so the add-in card I added is actually one of our wi-fi cards, so in the pci express slot in the back of the unit, I added our qwa ac 2600 and we can see I already have a wireless set up on that so if I go down here my nas has antennas attached to the back so it's broadcasting an access point so I created a ssid, I've created a password for it and I've set this to just be the five gig network, I've set up the channel and you can see I've got a client connected here for about 18 hours so the quality of the signal connected is fantastic.
Adding access points to your NAS is very easy, so if I click the Add Access Point option at the top, it will search for any available network adapters. i have so you can see the 2.4 gig antenna is available so if you were to click next you really just have to type in the password and ssid and then you can choose which channel you want once it's created so which is very easy to add another wi-fi network to this and our card does uh concurrent wi-fi so you can do 5 gig and 2.4 gig at the same time um or you can have them completely separate you can have them on the same ssid you can have separate ssids you can completely choose how you can calculate that yourself and this is an option we have so above all else i' you know? plex qsync servers and Time Machine backups.
Download station to download torrents. it's there too and this nas also has hdmi output so on the hdmi outputs and I'm going to have to do this kind of weird because I can't show you the hdmi output any other way so if I go into the settings here and click to open can i do a remote connection to what i would see if i connected the hdmi of this nas to a tv so maybe you have an older tv maybe not a smart tv and as long as you have hdmi video input yes plug the qnap into that hdmi output you can see a bunch of different apps we can install so here's a selection of the different apps you can add and on the hdmi output some of them like hd player will allow you to connect to the media servers you have running on your nas so you can play the video files, music content, whatever you have and we have different options like libreoffice libreoffice is a bit like microsoft office it's free mostly for linux if you were to connect a usb keyboard and mouse to the qnap you can interact with this screen on your big screen tv as if it's a computer and draft office documents and do different things like that or just open the web browser and surf the web so here we go we've opened the web browser that we can go through and we can see all the different things that you know it's a very responsive web browser that you can use for the web, so yes, you can have a nice Smart TV option right on the TV and it works especially well if you connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the device, so this is effective. what you'll see on the hdmi output of that nas so while it does everything else it's also a built in option so one of the last apps I'll talk about is note station so with note station before i go any further let me check if the there are any other questions um if wi-fi compatible mesh was jerome's question and if it had our new network adapter yeah then we have a wi-fi six option coming out soon, um that you could use that as well yeah you have a lot of different options with the wi-fi you don't have to use a qnap we also have different options that you have I have a question here from Mike saying can you add a TV card to the NAS? um sort of yeah um I'll show you at the end mike um actually I will probably postpone the TV card to NAS question for the plex session we do right before Christmas and so I have a TV tuner hooked up to plex on my other nights but i'll show that in the session um towards christmas ok so here with the note station so the note station is a really good collaboration tool for multiple people to collaborate so if you have some familiarity with um kind of like the google apps they have where you can create spreadsheets in google handle things like that that a lot of people can access this is so but it's directly on your own and in my opinion it's much easier to use so here's a note I created for our new ts-h-2490 unit and so I've embedded a couple of hyperlinks down here so you can click on them and it will open up the product page so for what is a note in interactive that you can click to do things.
I also added a few different tasks here so yesterday I was Leaving the unit to a journalist so I did that and we took some photos and screenshots for some social media and then I have a couple of other options so once the weather is over December 16th and go pick up the unit, I can come back here and I can check that box. I've done that homework and once you've posted the review, I can flag that and say we've put it up on the web as well. I've added a few different photos so the photos are very easy to edit as well so if you click on the photo there's an option up here where you can ju draw things first so say you wanted to put an arrow maybe you wanted to put a text box next to it so you can put a text box and say test and then you can drag the text box up to match where you want the arrow to go back and move the arrow somewhere else so it's really easy and once you've done that just hit save and now it's going to embed that new update you've made right into the document so it's really good for saving project tracking to collaborate with colleagues so if you had need to click the information option in this note, if I go here to information and the admin uses the owner and I also added the webinar account as a contributor so they can log in and they also have edit access, so they can go in and change the different options that are there and go down a bit more.
I've also embedded the YouTube video link, so they play directly inside the window as well. the within the session so it's a very easy way to keep track of everything to do with a specific project you're working on um look we have a question there um from mike can you take notes on a phone? Yeah we have an app for notes that works on android and ios and there's also an additional um you can have for google chrome um so the plugin for chrome can um say copy paste something on a website and you can paste it right into a note using the plugin for chrome which is great too so there are different options there but station three here is completely free this is just a selection of things you can do with it you even have snapshot options here so if you want to take a snapshot this keeps track of who made updates when you're on the left side but if you want to take a snapshot of the state of this you can take a snapshot and it should say instantly taken note you have a snapshot manager if want to log in and set it to take automatic snapshots of the notes automatically.
Back them up as often as you like. You have different options to do it too, so yeah, very easy. I have a question from Rob that says I have added two SSDs to my ts351. I'm not sure if it's set up correctly um I'll email you after the session rob um maybe I'll get some screenshots so you can see how you set it up and then I'll see if we can improve that um so somebody here uh uv probably be Saying that wrong sorry I'm asking what is the best way to end apps or processes so that's a good question so if you ever wanted to quit an app let's say you go into app center and you'll see lots of different apps we have installed here if you ever want to stop one of these click the little blue drop down arrow next to the app and then there's an option to stop it on some of the apps there's also an option to migrate it so if you have multiple volumes on your qnap and maybe you want an app like one that runs our virtual machines, you wanted it to run from um, your disk volume hard to your ssd volume to make it work faster you can migrate it between volumes in some of the apps some need to be on the system drive but some can be moved too um so here's a dirk option what to format the station of notes three saves your files so it's a proprietary thing on the nas but what you can do is export the notes so when you're in the notes station you're looking at a note you can export it and you can export take it out as a pdf if you want so if you ever wanted to save it as a pdf or something that's an option you can do so exporting the notes is also very easy to do so if you ever wanted to do that or you can even share the notes with someone else there are also a lot of activities you can even encrypt the notes if you want to encrypt them so that no one else can access them without a password but yeah there are a lot of different options here giving them a lot of options nes so yeah there are a lot of options things you can do there inside note station a question from jerome about if there is a way to migrate your notes from say evernote to notes and vice versa um good question i will not have seen import options so i'll check if there's a way to do that for you jerome i'll get back to that so now i guess for the grand finale after all you've seen it's running on this nas so all different apps so the way I've counted it is about 15 different apps I've tried we also have some additional services running you know I have the antivirus software running in the background and the web server obviously as well it's running for things like running the wordpress environment that we have, um, there's so many different things that I even have an additional media server running on there, a dlna media server, though you'll ngo plex running i also have this running on this in addition to everything we've gone through we also have our application called virtualization station now virtualization station is a way to run virtual machines directly on the nas so i allocated here six cores from the cpu and a gig of ram to a virtual machine for ubuntu so if i were to click here and click start now i'm doing the same thing nas i haven't terminated any other services everything else is still running in the background plz what all those other services i have running are still there its still on ours you can still backup shared laptops files and backup from other nas are backup sources on the cloud, but now you're also running a copy of ubuntu directly on the nas, so you're running another OS, so not just our Another nas os you are now running a full copy of ubuntu directly on the nas which you can interface with and use it to make it fully usable as a proper computer if you want you can even send these vms running on the nas to the hdmi output from the nas so if you plugged in a usb keyboard and mouse you could have a nice little dev workstation or pc for your kids something like that that's a really good option you can do now besides that i'll leave the running ubuntu but why don't we go ahead and fire up a copy of windows 10 like okay on the same nas so while i run all those different tasks and services we've done inside the nas now i'm asking it to run two machines separate virtual ones and not just the linux lite ones this is a full copy of windows 10 that's booting now and it boots pretty fast considering everything else running inside that nas all different applications we have that now have two separate virtual machines running so just to illustrate while it's booting i didn't shut down ubuntu which is still running there in the background so the linux os is still running directly in the background while that i have a windows virtualization station so there is my ubuntu and here is windows 10 logging in so yeah very very powerful um i have a question from laurie i would like to go on and try linux do you have any websites i could help with this please um can i send you something after the session truck um if now it supports umVirtualization Station is incredibly easy to Of course, Windows wants a wizard or an update.
Here we go. Someone else ask here. John asks if the web server must be running to allow management of the NAS in the web browser. No, that is completely different from the web browser service in NAS control. the panel is for the web server running on port 80, the nas interface runs on port 8080 and is a completely different service. transfer a windows um OS from Parallels or something like a vmware workstation. There is another. I forgot the name of the other one, but yes, you can do it. The only thing we would ask is that you do. close these two vms i'll leave them running um is when you go to an importer vm and there are some options here so it should be an ova ovf vmx or the qnap one qvm as long as you can export it from your other hypervisor in one of those formats we can import it directly into our hypervisor which is also running here so yeah those two are running now if we look at the status of this resource monitor we can see we're only using 19 of the cpu and 63 of the ram so so there's still room to grow you could fire up another couple of vms install another 10 apps there's plenty of capacity left and like I said this nas isn't necessarily the absolute top spec it's not the lowest cost one but it's right on the middle there's a mid range nas with the i5 six core a very very powerful um device if you add all these different services you really have a lot of eggs added in a device that you know has got a lot of features different you can do for different options you might have someone here asks mike if the circular hole you were running in a container is the same as a virtual machine you are showing now no so containers are like lightweight virtual machines each container you run, many of them would have a share, eg. if you were to run a copy of linux and install 50 applications on it, there is no duplication between the applications as such because the linux environment it runs in is shared between all the different applications, but if you were to run a copy of linux and then install one app and then install another copy of linux for another app you are now running two copies of linux which is pretty inefficient so the container station is effectively the linux base environment and the dockers or the containers which you add there as pi hall Just like the minecraft server, they are like apps that are installed, but they are completely separate from everything else, each can have its own IP address and completely separate settings. linked to each other at all so its a very easy and lightweight way to add different apps someone says is there any tutorial to set up pie tour in docker in container station if no ace i will create a pair. of steps for me to do it is really quick and easy to do i did it for my colleague in about three minutes i think a few months ago it was very quick and easy to do someone here asks if i can duplicate my current windows laptop as a virtual computer for qnap the virtualization station you may need a tool to basically do a physical to virtual conversion of your OS huh we don't provide that tool but I can send an email after the session so you have uh you have that information uh what software would you use to do that someone here is asking if you can add gpu support to the virtualization station um if you use design software you can improve with gpu passthrough fantastic question yes so there are different options you can do within the virtualization station but yeah , in others here, where is this?
Oh I can't do it on this one because this one already has a gpu built in if I had an unused gpu here is an additional menu for the gpu if I were to go into a virtual machine let's take a look at the virtual machine go to the config, there are options to add pcie things like gpus and options in it, it won't. Let me change the settings while I'm here but yeah there are different options you can add so once you have a spare GPU there will be an option down here you can add so here in the video i have vga type but there would be another option down here if you wanted to add a device so you can add a device the device can come from a pcie location and you can add it so yes you can do gpus dedicated to a virtual machine if you want some other questions is it possible to back up time machine backup file to cloud with hps3 and technically yes you can because it's just in a shared folder so you could create a backup sync job hybrid 3 for time machine shared folder to back up to the cloud if i wanted to yeah and someone said dlna i saw your plex running is that right? easy to use also itunes and sonos huh yeah so sonus just need a dlna media server and for itunes we have an itunes app you can add uh mike is asking if you can share a python config yes i am doing that too i will do that too for you mike ok thanks for your email johan and john want the stack manual no problem i'll send it to you all ok i'll just stick around a couple more minutes. if there's any other questions, but yeah, if anyone wants, wants to ask any other questions after the session, they can email us at uk sales qnap.com, and in a couple of weeks we'll have the next webinar which should be about our business desktop with a performance demo that's great to see one of the new desktops um i haven't even seen yet so hopefully it's on time and the last session before christmas will be on um how to use plex in much more detail really everything what you need to set it up on a qnap nas um so that the login is without plex installed and i'll add plex install it set it up set it up and you can see the process it goes through to add files to it and different different content so that it will be a good one uh geo about the question about qgd um i see your question i will export a report at the end of the session and will come back to you after the session don't worry i have your e-mail address email um and uh another question lets say yes there is a youtube channel the official qnap uk youtube channel i dont know my heart link but if you just do a quick google for um qnap uk youtube it usually pops up for me when uh when i go there , so yeah, here's the option that you can go and then all the uh the webinars and the kind of videos that we've done so far will show up on this list, so the webinar that we did a couple of weeks ago it's there, so yeah, you can go through and take a look at all the different webinars that we host. i have and some ad hoc videos we've done as well ok uh tony is asking a question about q archiving no i didn't do q archiving in this session tony is installed so just for reference it's an additional application that is installed it's just that I don't have any rules created in it but q file is a really nice tool that allows you to automate tasks on the qnap so you can set rules in here like um maybe I have a folder called upload where I have some clients uploading files to it.
You can say that if a file is uploaded to this folder, I want you to move it to this folder which is private and not open to the outside world. It could have any file that is older than three years. old delete or archive to this location and there are many options it's a very powerful app it triggers but yeah that's there too um it's running in the background so I guess that makes it even more awesome there's another app , I just haven't created any rules within it, but I had it. installed and maybe we'll include q archiving in a different session there's a lot to cover in q dropping so i just didn't have time for this session huh yeah john i'll send you the email too ok i think we'll probably finish it there um i'll export a report back after this session to see everyone's questions if there's anything I didn't answer i'll email you directly um i think a generic email will come out i think we might be sending out questions on the generic one for everyone because everyone seems very interested on that, so yeah, give me a little time just to create that if I can't find anything that's ready. to go i'm just going to create a locator it's very quick and easy to set up so it should be easy for you guys to do it ok thanks a lot guys and see you on the next one in a couple of weeks bye.
