Plex, Pi Hole, Surveillance, VPN, Deep Learning, is there anything QNAP can't do?

Jun 06, 2021
Well, good morning everyone, thank you for joining us for the second webinar in this four-part series. If you're joining us today from the UK, I hope you managed to prepare for the second lockdown without too many problems and I hope it doesn't too. hard for you and don't forget, if you attend all four webinars in this mini-series you will have a chance to win a two-bay nas with two eight terabyte wd drives arriving just in time for christmas, so be sure You signed up for the next two sessions and if you missed it last time, then it was a pretty good session.
plex pi hole surveillance vpn deep learning is there anything qnap can t do
All about how to securely access your nas over the web, so check it out on our YouTube channel if you missed it. where you can find all of these webinar videos as well as directly posted content that we didn't post live today that should be another great webinar. Basically, Craig is going to take us through everything you can do with

qnap

nas in an attempt to see if you can supercharge it, so if you already know how much you can do in a keynote, you'll know that this is going to be a pretty quick session, so if You have any questions, we will answer you.

More Interesting Facts About,

plex pi hole surveillance vpn deep learning is there anything qnap can t do...

We're reviewing and please tap them in the chat window as they come to mind so we can respond to them while we're talking about that topic still so thank you very much Tom um so yeah today we are. We're going to actually go through the

qnap

app center and we're going to try to click install on most of the apps that we have, specifically the ones created by keynap and we've added a couple that aren't created. by us, so from our third party partners and we'll go through them all running demos showing you that they're actually active, they're not just icons for the sake of icons, we're actually running them all um and the cool thing.
plex pi hole surveillance vpn deep learning is there anything qnap can t do
What's happening here is that everything I'm showing you today will be running on this specific nas, so everything will be on this nas, we're not running some of the apps on others. nas um I went with a mid range nas here so just to cover the specs of the nas and this is a tvs-872 xt so the specs of the drives on this one I have eight 10 terabytes uh wd red pros and really good drives , you know, 3d active balance, plus they have naswer3 firmware, so you can get seamless integration and better reliability, and they have a five-year warranty, which is nice, and I have a couple of SSDs. added in the m.2 slots and they are the wd black sn750 nvmes, only small, only 500 gigs.

I'm just using them to speed up the hard drives a little bit just to make things a little snappier for a few different applications. I'll show you that, to give you a view of the configuration of the nas itself, so this unit has a six-core Intel i5 CPU and I have 16 gigs of RAM, so this is the exact spec that we sell it to. I haven't added any additional hardware to make it faster. You'll see a little later. I've put a couple of extra things on the back of the nose, but we'll get to that and why.
I did this a little later in the session, so a lot of this stuff may not make much sense. Why would you run all of this in one now? Some of the apps are very business focused, some are very for home users. focused, but the idea here is just to show you what you can do with a nas um so that we have as many applications as possible running, so we're pretty much going to go through all of these applications in order so that you have them listed here, so inside from the app sensor I clicked install and everything makes sense and I tried not to duplicate it too much for example if I have a media server installed I won't install a second one simply because it's a bit excessive to do and the first one of which what i will talk about is our qsync central app, so for anyone who is not familiar with qsync central, this is an app that effectively turns yonaz into a dropbox. apps so qsync instead of having to use a cloud provided service let's say like Dropbox you don't have to pay to work with them so I have a free Dropbox account for example it only gives you five gigs of space if you pay a lot per month you might get a terabyte of space but in this example I have all the available capacity of those eight 10 terabyte wd red pro drives here to play with and no subscription charge.
You have to worry and with qsync here this allows me to have a laptop that was synced, so if we go to the details here of the online user, I have a user that just called webinar that was added, so I have I have the only device connected, so I have my MacBook Air sitting next to me that is connected and syncing and you can get basic information, you can go through different management options, you can choose to have team folders and any data. which needs to be shared between everyone in your organization or your user group, you can have specific folders that are shared between everyone and as you go through the different options you can share some things with qsync, some without and the best is with the little app which you can install on the local Windows or Mac machine we also have options for iOS and Android and it can sync data offline, so if you ever have to get on a plane and want to work on something files that were on your NAS in the office qsync would allow you to sync some selected folders directly to your local machine so you have offline access to them as well, so this is the first service we run, so I have qsync enabled on this nas.
Next up is our hybrid backup sync app, so we've obviously covered this in previous sessions so I won't go into too much detail, but it's one of the services I've never talked about. What is displayed or displayed is that we have support for Apple Time Machine on the device, so I have the time machine, I have it enabled to work with the local qts account so that each user that connects to the nas can get their own dedicated storage bit and so inside the nas, I created a folder called Time Machine and assigned it as Time Machine backups, so if I scroll down here, I have Time Machine and we can see. that I have the macbook air next to me doing a time machine backup here, so right now, with only one machine doing a backup, I have a folder with everything that's in there for that time machine security, if you have multiple machines using Time Machine backup in this folder, you will also see all the different names of all the machines here in this location, so this data is encrypted by Apple Time Machines, so the data They are not visible to users, so they are protected. although they can all be in the same folder the data is not shared between different users so we also have the Time Machine service running on this and all other services can also be enabled if you want to backup other nas or cloud sources, you can do all of that within this same application, it doesn't use a lot of additional resources to do the different options there.
One of the additional options that I have enabled on this nas is our hybrid mount application, so hybrid mount allows you to mount a remote location now which can be another nas or a shared folder on a different server or it can be a location in the cloud, so I have two connections mounted on this, so if I were to go to the mount management on the left, I can see that I have my Google Drive qnap account that is synced, so there is a total amount of 100 gigs of cloud space there and I can see the 100 gigs of that capacity directly on my nas and it's also shared on the smb shares like Well, if I look here on the file station and I look at the menu on the left side, will give me all the different options of the things that I have synced and we can see that the Google Drive sync is also there, so even though this data is not necessarily stored directly on my computer or on my nas, you can choose whether the data is cache or not, since I have not accessed these two files, these two files are still in the cloud, so you can see that the cache status has a cloud icon next to it, but I can always say always keep in reserve cache if it's a folder or a file that I want constant access to then that's what I would do with um I would sync it locally so it's always on the always up to date nas I don't have to wait for the initial download to come from the cloud, so you can manually force some files to remain on the nas.
Someone here asks the question, Mike, did you create the folder called time machine? Or is it created automatically? I created that one and so if I were to go to the shared folders on this nas, if I scroll down to the time machine folder, I think it's on the next page, so here inside the machine time, if I go to the settings for this folder there is an option here that allows you to say this is the folder right at the bottom, set this folder as the Time Machine backup folder so the folder can be named like Whatever you want, you don't have to call it Time Machine and you can set it to be absolutely

anything

you want, just tick this box effectively.
Checking this box activates the Apple Bonjour protocol or service that allows Time Machine to discover the purpose of the backup, so if it had to go. here and go to my time machine preferences, so when you click on select a backup drive inside the time machine, you need something that is advertised like that backup location, it won't make a copy of security from any source, it has to be time. compatible with the machine and checking this box effectively does it for you okay so we'll get out of that here's how you do it thanks for the question Mike so yeah this is a hybrid mount anyway so that with hybrid support you can do this. and I also have another folder down here that is virtual um on a different server so I have a different nas here and a different IP address than this one this one is at 50.29 this is at 50.5 so everything here is completely cached. the network, so now I've basically mounted it in a remote network folder on this nas so I don't have to give users access to every nozzle I may have.
You could mount the remote folders from the other nodes directly here and if we go back to the hybrid mount, we can see that we have the remote devices section where that is also enabled, so it's very easy to configure the different options there, whether want a remote device on your local network, maybe it's on it. on a remote network or if you want to use one of the cloud service providers that are there, we also have that as an option, so one of the additional features that I added here is q search, so q search is our way of performing instant searches.
So anyone who's familiar with a Mac will know that you have featured search where you can press command and space and you can type

anything

to search your local Mac, which is not very good when you're talking about network locations because you have to catalog the network location and if you have 50 Mac users in your office, each of those Mac users has to catalog the network location. There is a lot of network traffic. If you can use q search, it's much easier to find content, so here. if I were to type something like tsh 886 and press enter, it will activate and search for everything that has to do with that particular file name on the device if I want to segment it to just images, music, pdf documents, you know, you can be very Selective about when to find the results and can also include things that are no older than a certain age or a certain size.
It has many filtering options and when you click on the item you can take a quick look at the file. and it will just show a quick look at that specific file so you can view it instead of downloading the entire file, so it will also create thumbnails for you, so it's very quick and easy to access anything within that and we do that. It has some additional advanced features, but depending on how you use them, they may be included or you may have to opt for a premium version and purchase a license. It's pretty low cost, but you can get a license for some additional features, but for most people.
The basic options included will be enough to search files and find things. It's a pretty smart search to review the different options we have there. One of the additional options running on this nas is our download station app, so this is an option that will download from many different services, so if you add a download test, you can click enter URL or you can add torrent files, so if you don't want to download the filesoftware. So if you were to go to the Plex download list, they would offer you to download the app in different configurations, so the Plex app I have.
What I'm using is the x86 or x64 version so it's kind of a 64 bit Intel AMD CPU version but they also make an arm based one so ts431 xcu is arm based now I would have to download the arm based version. The software version doesn't have as many features as the x86 or 64-bit version, but yes, you can usually get it in most cases if you go to the Plex website and go to its own download. section uh you might, but they might have a few different versions available for you okay so the next app that I'm going to talk about here is our qvpn service so qvpn I covered it in the session last time about how to protect your nas and different things like that, but just to illustrate, I also have it running here.
I have a client currently connected through our q belt service that is running so this service is also running in the background so just to illustrate exactly how the nas works. is doing with everything I've covered so far, if I were to go up here to our resources panel, we can see that I only have 43 percent of RAM usage and the CPU is used very little there, that's with everything I've covered until now. I've run it, so it's actually not working that bad with all the different options we have. Now let's start moving on to some of the heavier applications, the ones that really affect CPU usage and esp. the ram um so the first one here is our qvr elite app uh you may be familiar with our qvr pro option a qvr elite is the kind of next iteration that we have it's a little bit more efficient than qvr pro so instead of needing four gigs of ram to run it we have done a lot of efficiency upgrades with mongodb powering the back end so now it only needs ad two gigs of ram which should allow us to open this software our qvr software to run on nas that are not Intel or AMD as well. the arm base is now the lowest cost and now you should be able to use this um the only difference really is that qvr pro is a perpetual license and it's a subscription based license here for qvr elite um but the prices are pretty good, so if you want to go check out our software store we have a few different licenses there so inside qvr elite I have two cameras added so I have two free licenses so I have the two cameras added so if I had to open the client software i have here and log in to this nas.
We can go and take a look at the kind of live view of these two cameras, so here we'll just connect them together, so I've created. a view of all the cameras so I have the two different cameras that I have so I have one looking at the front yard, one in my office window here looking out and here with this one because I have this one selected and it's a ptz camera with pan and tilt zoom, so I can change the angle so I can move it to the left, I can move it to the right or I can do some pretty intense zoom options.
Also, if I wanted to get completely close to something in the distance, you have a lot of different options that you can use within the camera, so this is all integrated within the interface and if you want those controls directly on the image you can also have those. controls right inside the screen, so you can actually get pretty good precision, although within the point and the different zoom options that we have there, very, very good, very powerful option. but this is the qvr software, it looks a lot like the qvr pro software, it's just a little more efficient, the client software here is absolutely identical, the only thing that changes is that it only says qvr elite in the top left if you're logged in. a qbr elite machine and someone you are asking then jerome asks if it supports qvr elite, qvr guard and the backup mouse yes so you can add qvr guard to qvr pro or qvr elite that is the same component it doesn't have .
It didn't change, there is no cost for qvr guards, so if you have a second nas and want to use our qvr guard software, then if your main recording solution stops working, qvr guard will take over, yes it is fully compatible with that. I haven't added it in this one, but yeah, it's fully compatible with that and that's our qvr elite software, so it also runs directly on the nas and at the same time as everything else we have. The next one I'll talk about is the container station, so the container station is really the place where you can add different features to your nas and maybe if we don't have a built-in app in the app center for it, for example here .
I have a Minecraft server running directly on this now, so Minecraft, you know, one of those popular games. We don't have an app to run it natively on the nas, but here you can run it on the nas if you want. you want and it's very easy to set up, you literally create, you click create on the left, you search for what you want, so if you search for Minecraft, it comes up and you click create, it will activate and you install it, you can click. in the element and it will give you things like the default passwords and the things that you need to access the server, but you can change them after you've set it up, but this is a really easy way to add a few different elements in there and So the first one here is that I have a WordPress website running, so it is actually added as two separate containers, one is the backend database that powers it and the frontend, web admin screens, powered by a different one, so yeah It was come here to a new window and go to the WordPress site that I'm running, so here's a pretty basic WordPress site that I added now, so I haven't really put any content on it, but that's the main nas and if you go to wp admin with slash at the end, it will take you to the back end where you can control all of this, so anyone who's not familiar with running blogs or something, this is great. way to run blogs or a website, you can even do things like ecommerce there, so this allows you to run it even if there's no native app and our qts based now has a native app, so you didn't have that.
You have to run it in a container if you don't want to, so it's a little easier to configure it another way, but yes, there are different options. I see we have a couple of additional questions here about qbr elite. Then Josh asks what exactly qvr elite is. It is what we would call an nvr software or a content management solution for your cameras, so it will allow you to have IP cameras and it will record them and you will be able to configure different things like. motion detection events and how long you want the cameras to record for things like that.
Another question from Jerome. Is there an easy migration from professional to elite? Licenses cannot be migrated, so if you already have licenses, no, but if you have your cameras. They are currently working on qbr pro, the exact same list of supported cameras will work on elite, so with pro for example you get eight free cameras with up to 14 days of recording and if that's ok you can move them to elite, just be one. you want to get two free licenses with elites you get eight free with qvr pro and it's subscription based lighting but they are pretty low cost so yeah very easy anyone else here is saying it supports the unified controller do the cameras Unified are supported natively? in qvr, so it's not supported natively, no, not directly, but that would be really necessary to unify them, they don't have a certification method, let's say of adding different cameras, so if you were to add different cameras in the list, we have a a couple of ubiquiti network cameras in there, I can add another one in there to illustrate, uh, but yeah, the different cameras um they add, you can still make them work, you just have to add them with an rtsp stream so that when I add the camera, it would have than adding it as a generic model, so generic and then here you have a generic rtsp, so with this one you just need to make sure that you put the ports correctly, so you need to get the rtsp.
URL you can usually get on the Unify forums, you usually don't need a username and password to access, you just have to match the port and URL and you can add the unified cameras here, but they will not be added as a brand model unified on the left side, but they work, you can add them and there is a video on youtube. I think the type is called crosstalk solutions. In fact, he did it on one of our nas and it worked well, so John's question just asks for a quick demo of the bump, so that's a great spot there, John at the container station.
I had our ring

hole

solution in there, so if I were to access my pi

hole

that I have running on the network here, then pihole is a DNS filter. I'll type in the wrong IP, it'll autocomplete too much, here we go, so this is the circle hole that I have working, so the circle hole is a dns filter um, if you want, on my network here, um, I have all the machines with the dns. The IP address points to 192.168.50. So if I were to illustrate that and I go here to my network interface and look at my interface, we can see that the DNS server is set to the same IP address as the pi hole, so any DNS request I make goes to First go to the pie hole and the pie room has aggregated domain lists of things that are approved or not approved for access, so for example, if you were to do a Google search on one of our products, then let's do a look at the actual product that I'm testing here so we can see it here.
I can see that there are some here that have the right to add, so if I were to click on the actual product page for qnap, that will take me directly to the qnap page. that will be allowed and will work. I'll click on it just to test it and then it'll go directly to our website and I can access it, but now this ad here says eBay or one of our partners is selling. our nas or broadband buyer here at the top, if I were to click on this link because it's an ad, it doesn't go directly to the broadband buyer, it will go viral on Google ad services, so when I click In it it says I can't. connect to the server, so if I ever really wanted to click on that, I can go to the circle hole here, I can go to the disable option and I can disable the circle hole for 10 seconds, so if I were to come back here go back to a section and now click on it, now the google ad services link is working and now it lets me through and when I go back to the pi hole after the countdown ends it now re-enables itself so if I were to go back and click on one of these ad links again, let me click on the ebio one this time, there may not be a tracking link for one to work, but no ads appeared, so that one was fine, but that will get you going . through the DNS filter option so this is a really great option and the best thing about this is that sometimes you can't do things like ad blockers and popup blockers on mobile especially if you say you play on a game and it is full of ads and the best thing about this is that if your mobile device is on the network and you also have your IP address set to Pie Hall for DNS passthrough options, it will also block all ads on your mobile devices, for which is a really great option, it's completely free and it's very easy to set up as a container directly on the nas and uses almost no resources to do so, hopefully that covered you.
John, I have a question here from yemi, is there any? Disadvantage of using nas hard drives alone for all these applications along with qvr nvr software. Are there any disadvantages of using nas hard drives? No, you can use nas hard drives to do anything within the mvr software. They're good, but there are different options if We were using your nas um specifically just to do

surveillance

applications. Drive manufacturers like wd make a variety of drives called purple um that are dedicated to doing CCTV applications, so they're a little more suited to doing the constant reads and writes that you get. of having a lot of cameras added but no drives, it will work great for that application if you are using it for other things, but if it is primarily used as a CCTV server you might want to consider something like a dedicated violet unit, ok is there any other questions here?
Someone is asking, is there a way I can view previous webinars? I used qnap to backup Time Machine and it saved my sanity on more than one occasion. Yes Laurie you can go if you just do a When you do a Google search for qnap YouTube channel you should see two results there and the UK one is where we do our webinars but we have our companyparent company based in Taiwan that produces a lot of good content from the product managers that's also there in their I also have my own YouTube channel, um, yeah, so I see a second question.
I'll get back to you on that geography that's not really related to this session, but I'll get back to you and get back to you about that, okay? Now we'll move on to the next thing, so we also have on this device. I said at the beginning of the session that I added an extra card on the back, so the extra card I added is actually one of our wi-. fi cards so in the pci express slot on the back of the unit I added our qwa ac 2600 and we can see I already have a wireless network set up so if I go down here my nas has antennas sticking out from behind this is transmitting an access point, so I created an ssid, created a password for it, and set this to be just the five gig network.
I set up the channel and you can see that I have a client connected here for about 18 hours, so the quality of the connected signal is fantastic. Adding access points to your nas is very easy, so if I click the Add access point option at the top, it will look for any available network adapters you have. I can see that the 2.4 gig antenna is available so if I click next you really just have to type in the password and ssid and then you can choose which channel you want once created so it's very easy to add another antenna. fi network on this and our card has simultaneous wi-fi, so you can do 5 gigs and 2.4 gigs at the same time, or you can have them completely separate, you can have them on the same ssid, you can have separate ssids, you can completely choose how you can solve it yourself and this is an option that we have on top of everything I'm doing, you know,

plex

servers, qsync and time machine backups, a download station for downloading torrents, a qmagi, managing your photos , mynas is also a wireless access point so there are tons of things you can do with the nas especially if you add an extra piece of hardware in there as well and this nas also has hdmi output so on the hdmi outputs and I'm going to Having doing this is a little strange because I can't show you the HDMI otherwise, so if I go into the settings here and click to open, I can make a remote connection to what you would see if you connected the hdmi output of this nas to a tv, so maybe you have an older tv, maybe it's not a smart tv and as long as it has an hdmi video input, if you plug the qnap into that hdmi output you'll be able to see a bunch of different apps that we can install, so here is a selection of the different applications that you can add and on the hdmi output, some of them, like the hd player, will allow you to connect to the media servers that you have running on your nas to be able to play the video files content of music whatever you have and we have different options like libreoffice libreoffice is a bit like microsoft office, only it is free mainly for Linux.
If you connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the qnap, you will be able to interact with this screen on your big TV screen as if it is a computer and you compose office documents and do different things like that or just open the web browser and browse the web, like this so here we go, we have opened the web browser that we can navigate through and we can see all the different things. I know it's a very responsive web browser that you can use for the network and so yes, you can have a good smart TV option right on the TV and it works especially well if you connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the device, for what this is effective. which you will see on the hdmi output of that nas so while it does everything else it is also a built in option so one of the last apps I will talk about is note station so with note station before we continue, let me check.
If there are any other questions, is Wi-Fi compatible with mesh? It was a question from Jerome and if you had our new network adapter, yes, then we have a Wi-Fi six option coming out soon, that could use that. Also, yes, you have many different options with Wi-Fi. You don't have to use Qnap. We also have different options. I have a question from Mike. saying: can you add a tv card to the nas? um sort of yeah, I'll show you at the end mike um, actually I will. I'll probably postpone the TV card question to nas for the

plex

session we do just before Christmas.
And I have a TV tuner connected to Plex on my other nights, but I'll show it in the session, around Christmas, okay, and here with Note Station, so Note Station is a very good collaboration tool for multiple people. to collaborate, so if you're familiar with something like Google apps that they have where you can create spreadsheets in Google Drive, things like that that a lot of people can access, this is like that, but it's directly up to you and in my opinion opinion, It's much easier to use, so here's a note I created for our new ts-h-2490 unit and down here I've inserted a couple of hyperlinks so you can click on them and it will open the product page.
It's an interactive note that you can click on to do things. I also added different tasks here so yesterday I was leaving the unit to a journalist so I did that and we took some photos and screenshots for some social media and then I have a couple more options so once the December 16th and pick up the unit again, I can come back here and I can check that box. I've done that homework and once I've posted the review, I can mark it. and let's say we also upload it to the network. I added a few different photos, so the photos are also very easy to edit, so if you click on the photo, there's an option here where you can just draw things, so let's say. you wanted to put an arrow maybe you wanted to put a text box next to it so you can put a text box and say test and then you can drag the text box up to match where you want the arrow to be, go back and move the arrow to another place to make it really easy and once you've done that, you just click save and now that new update that you made will be inserted right into the document, so it's really good for keeping track of projects and collaborating. with colleagues so if I were to click on the info option on this note if I go here for info and the admin uses the owner and I also added the webinar account as a collaborator so they can log in and edit access as well so they can go in and change the different options that are there and go down a little bit further.
I have also embedded in the youtube video link so that they play directly within the window and play directly within the session. That's a very easy way to keep track of everything related to a specific project you're working on. Look, we have a question. Mike. Can you take notes on a phone? Yes, we have a notes app. that works on Android and iOS and there's also an additional um that you can have for Google Chrome, so the plugin for Chrome you can say copy and paste something to a website and you can paste it directly into a note using the plugin. -in for Chrome, which is also great, so there are different options there, but keep in mind that station three here is completely free.
This is just a selection of things you can do with it. You even have snapshot options here, so if you want to take a snapshot of this, it keeps track of who made the updates when it's on the left side, but if you want to take a snapshot of the state of this, you can take a snapshot and it should say that a snapshot was taken successfully. Note that you have a snapshot manager if you want. to enter and set it to take an automatic snapshot of notes, so automatically back them up as often as you like.
You also have different options to do it, so yes, very easy. I have a question from Rob saying: "I've added two SSDs to my ts351. I'm not sure if it's set up correctly. I'll email you after the session. Maybe I'll make some screenshots so I can see how you set it up and then I'll see if you can improve that, so anyone here, uh, probably says that wrong, sorry, you're asking what's the best way to end applications or processes, so that's a good question, so if you ever wanted quit an app, let's say if you go into the app center and you'll see a lot of different apps that we have installed here.
If you ever want to stop one of these, click on the little blue drop down arrow next to the app and then there will be one. option to stop it in some of the applications there is also an option to migrate them, so if you have multiple volumes on your qnap and maybe you want an application like one that runs our virtual machines, I wanted it to run from your disk volume. hard to the volume of your SSD so it works faster, you can migrate it between volumes in some of the applications, some must be on the system drive but others you can also move them, so here is a Dirk option in what format it saves station three its files, so it's a proprietary thing in the nas, but what you can do is export the notes, so when you're in the notes station and you're looking at a note, you can export it and export it as a pdf if you want .
Have you ever wanted to save this as a PDF or something? This is an option that you can do, so exporting the notes is also very easy, so if you ever want to do it, you can even share the notes. for someone else too, there's a lot of activities, you can even encrypt the notes if you want to encrypt them so that no one else can access them without a password, but yeah, there's a lot of different options here, printing them, a lot of options, so yeah, there's a lot. of options you can do within the notes station a question from jerome about if there is a way to migrate your notes from, say, evernote to notes and vice versa.
Good question, I'll ask you. I haven't seen any import options so I'll check to see if there's a way to do that for you jerome I'll get back to that so now I guess for the grand finale after everything you've seen running on this nas so that all the different applications, just as I have counted them. There are about 15 different applications that I have tried. We also have some additional services running. You know, I have the antivirus software running in the background and the web server is obviously running as well for things like running the WordPress environment.
We have um there's so many different things, I even have an extra media server running on there, a dlna media server, although I have plex running, I also have this running on this in addition to everything we have. We have also analyzed our application called virtualization station. Now the virtualization station is a way to run virtual machines directly on the nas, so I have assigned here six CPU cores and one gig of RAM to a virtual machine for Ubuntu, so if I had to click here and click in Start. Now I am creating the same nas.
I have not completed any other services. Everything else is still running in the background, so all the other services I have running are still there. on ours it's still possible to backup laptops, share files and backup other nas, it's backing up from cloud sources, but now it's also running a copy of ubuntu directly on the nas, so it's running another OS, so not only our nas OS is now running a full system. copy of ubuntu directly to the nas that you can interact with and use to make it fully usable as a proper computer, if you want you can even send these vms running on the nas to the hdmi output of the nas, so if you connected a keyboard and a USB mouse, you could have a nice little development workstation or PC for your kids, something like that.
It is a very good option that you can do now. Also, I'll leave the Ubuntu one running, but why not? We just go ahead and boot up a copy of Windows 10 as well on the same nas, so while we're running all those different tasks and services that we've done inside the nas, I'm now asking it to run two separate virtual machines and not just the lightweight Linux ones, this is a full copy of windows 10 that's booting up now and it boots up pretty fast considering everything else that's running inside that nas, all the different apps that we have that now have two separate virtual machines running, so just to to illustrate.
While booting I didn't close Ubuntu which is still running in the background so the Linux OS is still running directly in the background while I have a virtualization station running Windows so there it ismy Ubuntu and here's the Windows 10, that's logging in, so yeah, very, very powerful. I got a question from Laurie. I would like to access and try Linux. Do you have a website that can help with this? Please can I send you something after the session. Lorry, yes it is now supported. um virtualization station is incredibly easy, of course, Windows wants a wizard or an update, here we go.
Someone else asks here. John's question is whether the web server needs to be running to allow nas management in the web browser. No, that's completely different. The web browser service in the nas control panel is for the web server running on port 80. The nas interface runs on port 8080 and is a completely different service. Someone says: can you transfer a Windows OS running in parallel to a virtual machine on the nas? Yeah you can do that uh dirk you can transfer a windows OS from parallels or something like a vmware workstation there's another one I forget the name of the other one but yeah you can you can do it the only thing you we would ask is that if we had to do it. just close these two vms, i will leave them running.
It's when you go to a vm importer and there are a few options here so it should be an ova ovf vmx or qnap one qvm as long as you can export it from your other hypervisor in one of those formats we can import it directly into our hypervisor which also runs here, so yes, those two are running now, if we look at the status of this resource monitor, we can see that we are only using 19. of the CPU and 63. of the RAM, so there is still room to grow, it could start another couple of VMs, install another 10 apps, plenty of capacity left and as I said, this nas is not necessarily the absolute best spec, it's not the lowest cost, but it's right in the middle, there's a range nas medium with six i5 cores, so it's a very, very powerful device, if you add all these different services, you really have a lot of eggs added into one device, you know?
It has a lot of different functions that it can perform for different options that you might have. Someone here is asking Mike. The circular hole he was running in a container is the same as a virtual machine he is showing now. No, the containers are lightweight. vms each container you run, many of them would have a shared resource, for example if you ran a copy of Linux and installed 50 applications on it, there is no duplication between the applications as such due to the Linux environment it runs on. is shared between all the different applications, but if you were to run one copy of Linux and then install one application and then install another copy of Linux for another application, you would now be running two copies of Linux, which is quite inefficient, so the station of containers is effective. the base linux environment and the dockers or containers you add there, like pi hall, like minecraft server, are like apps that you install, but they are completely separate from everything else, each one can have its own IP address separate and complete. and the settings are not linked to each other at all, so it is a very easy and lightweight way to add different applications.
Someone says: is there any tutorial to configure Pie Haul in Docker on container station? Not so, I'll create a couple of steps for you to do it. It's very quick and easy to do. I made it for my colleague in about three minutes. I think a few months ago it was very quick and easy to do. Someone here says it. asking, can I mirror my current windows laptop as a virtual computer for qnap virtualization station? It's possible? You would need a tool to basically do a physical to virtual conversion of your operating system. We don't provide that tool, but I can. send an email after the session there so you have that information.
What software would you use to do what someone here is asking? Can you add GPU support to the virtualization station? If you use design software, you can enhance it with GPU. fantastic stepquestion, yes, you can, so there are different options that you can do within the virtualization station, but yes, in others here, where is this? Oh I can't do it on this one because this one already has a built in gpu if you had an unused gpu there is an extra menu here for the gpu if you were to go into a virtual machine let's take a look at the virtual machine go to the settings, there are options to add pcie things like gpus and options, it won't work.
You don't let me change the settings while I'm here, but yeah, there are different options that you can add, so once you have a spare gpu, there will be an option down here that you can add, so here in the video. I have the vga type, but there would be another option down here if I wanted to add a device so I could add a device. The device can come from a pcie location and you can add it, so yes you can make dedicated gpus to a virtual one. machine, if I would like to ask other questions, is it possible to cloud backup the Time Machine backup file with hps3?
And technically yes you can because it's just in a shared folder, so you could create a hybrid backup sync 3 job for Time Machine. shared folder to backup to the cloud if you want, yes, and someone said dlna. I saw your plex running. Is it easy to use iTunes and Sonos too? Yes, so Sonus only needs a dlna media server and for iTunes we have an iTunes app. what can you add, uh, Mike asks: can you share the Python configuration? Yeah, so he was doing it for Ace? I'll do it for you too, Mike. Okay, thanks for your email.
Johan and John want the battery manual. No problem. Anyway, I'll send it to all of you too, okay, I'll stay a couple more minutes to see if there are any other questions, but yeah, if anyone wants to ask any other questions after the session, you can email us . on UK sales qnap.com and in a couple of weeks we'll have the next webinar which should be all about our business desktop with a performance demo which is great to see one of the new desktops that doesn't even I haven't even seen however, I hope it arrives in time and the last session before Christmas will be on how to use plex in much more detail, really all you need to set it up on a qnap nas um so the session start is without plex installed and I will add plex, install it, configure it and you can see the process that it goes through to add files and different content to it, so it will be good uh geo, about the question about qgd um I see your question, I will export a report at the end of the session and I will get back to you after the session, don't worry, I have your email address, um and uh, another question.
Say yes, there is a YouTube channel, the official Qnap UK YouTube channel. I don't know the link in my heart, but if you quickly google um qnap uk youtube it usually comes up when I go there so yeah. you have the option here that you can go and then all the webinars and the type of videos that we have done so far will appear in this list so that the webinar that we did a couple of weeks ago will be there. Yes, you can check out and take a look at all the different webinars that we have and some ad hoc videos that we've done as well.
Okay, Tony is asking a question about question submission. No, I did not present questions. this session, Tony, is installed, so just for reference, it is an additional application that is installed. I just don't have any rules created in it, but qarchive is a really good tool that allows you to automate tasks in qnap so you can set rules here like, maybe you have a folder called upload where some clients upload files to you. You can say that if a file is uploaded to this folder, I want you to move it to this folder which is private. not open to the outside world, you could have any file that is more than three years old, delete it or archive it in this location and there are many different options, it is a very powerful application that activates, but yes, that is also there, it is. running in the background, so I guess that makes it even more impressive.
There is another application. I just haven't created any rules within it, but I had it installed and maybe we'll include q archiving in a different session. There's a lot to cover in qfalling, so I just didn't have time for this session. Yes, John, I'll send you the email too. Okay, I think we'll probably end up there. I will export a report. After this session, I see everyone's questions. If there is something I didn't answer, I will email you directly. I think a generic email will come out. I think we could send full questions about the generic. for everyone because everyone seems very interested in it, so yeah, give me some time just to create it.
If I can't find anything that's ready to go I'll just create a locator, it's very quick and easy to set up so it should be easy for you to do. Thank you guys so much and I'll see you next time in a couple of weeks. Bye bye.
