It's such a beautiful thing to have and enjoy in the center of London, a beautiful example of wildlife like this, so why do you have any idea why it has settled in that particular place and keeps coming back to it? Oh, oh, wow, pop. Well, seals are always going to be following their prey and what it really shows is the barometer of the health of the river back in the 50s, the Thames was defined as dead, but only with the reduction of pesticides entering the waterways rivers and We've also seen a reduction in wastewater, invertebrates coming back and then we have more fish and then these larger predators like dolphins and porpoises that we've been seeing and whales and now seals are following those prey species into the river in this particular. boy, actually I should say boy, she's, she's a girl, I've watched her c

It's incredibly inspiring that you can be in the center of London and find this wildlife that you want to make sure is protected. Yes, these seals carry some pretty nasty bacteria in their mouths. They can bite very hard, not only you and your dogs too, but we just want to keep them close, we want them to be happy here and enjoy the fact that these waters. They are clean now, so yes of course we have to respect our wildlife if we want to enjoy it too. Oh, I love it, just like Scott mentioned. Oh, her, I love her.
Um, Scott mentioned that more and more seals are being seen in the River Thames and. Last week Scott joined a heroic rescue effort when a seal got into trouble, let's take a look, so today is not my usual walk with the kids along this beautiful River Thames. I have been called on a professional mission. a seal that's been caught in this lock over there and unfortunately has a hook stuck in its mouth, so my job is to try to get the hook out. It's going to be a pretty interesting day because this is an animal that is a wild creature that has very big teeth and won't be very happy when there are a bunch of people sitting on it while I'm pulling out a fish to help the seal.
We must first take it out of the lock to make that key. British marine life rescue divers' work-trained experts have traveled from across the country to help. So Mark, can you explain to us exactly how you plan to capture this seal? Well, let's sink the net into the lock. The lock is twenty feet wide, so we'll sink the net underwater a few feet deep and hopefully catch it in the net. We've done it before and I've done it and it literally took me four minutes. I did it and it took ten days it depends on how cooperative the seed is it is imperative that we rescue the seal as soon as we can the fishing hook that is stuck in its mouth prevents the seal from eating and the animal could starve if not remove these animals can be Up to 150 kilograms in weight they have a very firm bite and carry with them a lot of really nasty bacterial diseases that can infect a wound, especially when they bite your fingers, so today I need to put my hands in my mouth and try. retrieve the hook.
I hope it's on the lip and not the hard palate, which would be harder to remove with the mesh in place. It was time to rescue the seal. Oh hello, I can't wait to get it out. your mouth now the net is completely submerged the two boats are brought in to encourage the seal to swim over the top of the net we have it now we have to be very careful the stress of being captured can cause the seal to have a heart attack Fortunately this fantastic and skillful team brought the seal safely to dry land so I could examine it.
You can see that by simply removing it from a lock with a net we managed to remove the hook, so no need for a vet today with the hook out, all I have to do is clean the wounds where the hook has been and give the seal some antibiotics stamped or patched and secure. The last thing I could do was go home to our little friend here. Allen has nicknamed him Ted, so this is one seal that will make a full recovery. All thanks to this incredibly dedicated group of wildlife warriors and the dedicated marine life rescue team of British divers.
We have managed to save Teddy and free him again. He heads downriver near the Isle of Sheppy on the north Kent coast to join an established sealed colony and be where he belongs again in the wild. Oh well done guys it's lovely to see you back in the open water there and I think you. You had to check it, you named him Teddy after Teddington, where you rescued him, but that's not his real name, how did you find out his real name? No, yeah, actually, so close instead of being Teddy, his name is Freddie, Freddie Mercury, actually, um. but he's been a pretty hapless seal and I also think his satnav broke down because he was initially rescued in the Netherlands in December, then found his way to Calais in January and then thought, "You know what I'm going to do." he's going to swim across the canal, swim to the Thames and then swallow a fish on a hook at Teddington Lock, so he's been quite intrepid really, but thankfully he's been released now and will hopefully join that seal colony quite healthy which is right in the heart of the thames estuary and you knew his name was freddie mercury because he told you I totally understand yes and he also kept singing Queen songs, not really that's what they called him in the initial rescue. site, so we thought we'd stick with Freddie, uh, but this guy here is the same breed, oh wow, and he's having a wii on
