PGCE folder - Evidence and organisation | UK Secondary School | Science teacher

Jun 08, 2021
Hello everyone, welcome or welcome back to my channel. I hope you do very well. Today is a really exciting video. I'm finally going to share with you my pgc

folder

, so I hope you can get a lot of tips on how to do it. organize the

folder

into different sections but also what examples of

evidence

you can include to ensure you have enough

evidence

to pass your exam if you are new here Hi my name is Sophia, I am a

science

teacher

at a

secondary

school

in South London. I'm currently head of biology and I make a lot of YouTube videos just sharing with you my experience as a

teacher

, so I share a lot of teacher vlogs which I'll link in the cards above, but also a lot of different tips and advice. to do with your teacher training in your next year, but also many things to do with teaching and learning in general, such as lesson planning, dual coding recognition, grading, feedback evaluation, etc., etc. , etc., so if you enjoyed this video and some of my other videos, make sure to like it and to subscribe to the channel, don't forget you can always follow me on Instagram for more daily updates.

Now let's get into the video, so the first thing with your pgc folder is I recommend that you get a big folder. folder like this one here, um, just so you can fit all the evidence instead of having two separate, um thinner folders, so I would recommend that you start setting up your pgc folder from the beginning so that you can then add it as you want. collect evidence across your locations so that when you come to the end of your PGC year you have a ton of evidence just to sift through and almost edit, refine and decide which ones you want to keep and which ones you don't. want to have there if you're wondering what a pgc is pgc stands for postgraduate certificate in education and what that essentially means is your teacher training year, so it's the year that you train to become a teacher, whether it's primary or from is

secondary

and whatever the subject is, so you need to be able to demonstrate how you have met the teaching standards, so the teaching standards in the UK have two parts, there is a part one and a part two.

More Interesting Facts About,

pgce folder evidence and organisation uk secondary school science teacher...

The first part has eight teaching standards, so be sure. That you have folders within your binder to break down each of those teaching standards so that you can then have evidence to show that you have met each of the two parts of the teaching standards has a lot more to do with your code of conduct. There is a lot of evidence you need for that, in addition to formal documentation, I also recommend that you have a lot of evidence stored digitally, so in your emails for example, have a folder where you can drag different emails as evidence.

It's up to you if you want those emails to be just one folder or if you want a folder under your email inbox for each teaching standard, but I would definitely recommend having a pgc folder on your desktop where you can drag different types of documents, especially when it comes. To collect evidence from students' books, it's really difficult at the bottom of your page to collect examples of their work because you may not be teaching them. You may have moved to a different placement

school

. It may have happened, so I highly recommend you collect evidence. of students work when you see them, so grab your books, scan them through a printer as a pdf and then email it to them and then you can drag that pdf to your email inbox folder or to a folder on your desktop to print.

A little later, when it comes to organizing your pgc folder, you need to make sure you document all that evidence in a way that makes sense to whoever is viewing the folder. There's nothing worse than creating a folder that makes sense. you, but then it's not easy for someone else to use, the truth is that no one is going to review every document with attention to detail, no one is going to manage your folder, but I think it's really very useful. Be open and honest about the evidence you have collected to show to your mentor at your different locations, but also to your mentor at your university, so that they can give you feedback on whether that evidence really shows your competency to meet the requirements.
If you are not sure what the requirements are when you are training to be a teacher you may be unsatisfactory satisfactory good or outstanding now of course we all want to be good or outstanding and that is the goal but many of you could end up being unsatisfactory or satisfactory depending of what happens in your placement schools, so don't be alarmed or worried. I'm sure there are plenty of other videos talking about their own experiences, so I'll try to find a few to link to. up on the cards, but it is normal to go through a period of stagnation in progress and reach that satisfactory requirement, but it is all about what evidence you collect that you can then show to your mentor at your placement schools and your mentor at your university that is it really you.
You have made so much progress that you deserve a good or outstanding grade, so keep in mind that all this evidence is just to give you some confidence that you have really made progress in meeting those teaching standards, but also to evidence what the result is. Your process will be so I won't show you the first part of my folder because there is a lot of confidential and sensitive information, but I will do my best to show you how I have organized it, but also when it comes to the teaching sentence and the evidence that I have collected, I will show you many different examples so that you can get inspired, so as I said just for privacy and confidentiality reasons, I will not show them. you these first three but I will tell you what they are so this first one is my naswa certificate so this is the union just to say that I attended a lecture during my

pgce

um and you have my notes on that lecture this is just a cover with the university logo my name my tutor and the academic year then I have some documents that talk about the notes of my mentor meetings so this is a table with each mentor meeting I had at the university and the date and a short summary of what we did discussed in each of those meetings, so it's a double-sided page and I asked my mentor to sign at the bottom.
Then I have almost like an extended CV, so I have an audit of my previous experience just by looking at the years that what my duties were, what age group I was working with and how that supported me, you know, in gathering some evidence for my PGC. , so I have three folders and they all have to do with the three mentors that I had, so this one is my number one mentor this is my number two mentor in my first placement and this is my mentor in my second placement in each of these I have my mental meeting notes that have the summary of what we discussed in the mental The meeting has my actions and then I review them a little later just to mark them and say if I had met them and these were also arranged chronologically with the first date at the top and the last meeting at the bottom and me.
I have also held them with a clip. Well, these next three are my schedules, so I actually had two locations, but at my second location I had two schedules, so the first one is my schedule at my first location and then the next two are my schedules. on my second placement because my third schedule has an increase in the number of hours, which is something I had requested because I really wanted to make sure I was prepared for September these three are my reports at the end of each term you have a pgc report that your mentor completes and then write a comment also to agree and to show that you have met those teaching standards and that you agree with the actions that have been mentioned, so I only have a printed version of that report. and I placed them in three separate files.
Then I included the three evidence documents that I collected to evidence how I met each of those teaching standards for those reports, so I'm going to zoom in now and show you a little bit of Here you can see that what I did for each of the teaching standards. teaching I wrote a small paragraph and then I wrote the evidence, so I completed this for the eight teaching standards and I did this in preparation for each of those reports and I sent them to my mentor before she completed the formal report that I gave them to show, so this here is a printed reflection of my essays, so I also just wrote on a small index card the two essays that I did. the titles of those essays were what I accomplished in those essays and then I printed out one of the forms that we had to fill out for both essays.
Then I have a certificate of completion from an elementary school experience while I'm training. Being a high school teacher it was important that I was still working in an elementary school so it was four days full time in an elementary school and it was a lot of fun but I just printed confirmation that I completed it and this is a standard for teachers . pro forma I wanted to have a printed version so I could mark that I have evidence of each of these and I found it very useful to have it handy here in my binder section for later as I worked my way through. through it I could, you know, have examples of what I was thinking for each of those teaching standards.
Now this was a game changer. I thought it would be really helpful to put it together so what I did was lay out the structure and layout of the binder and then I have all the different pieces of evidence that I've included for each teaching standard just as a little page of content so it can be really easy to navigate through the The rest of the folder now in terms of reviewing the evidence so you can see that from the evidence that I've chosen, a lot of it relies on formal observation notes and lesson plans. I have been very specific with which year group. era and the title to be able to show a variety of different topics and

science

s but also different key stages and then you can also see that I have included examples of student work and examples of different powerpoints and resources that I have created and you can also see that I have I put together different audits to improve my subject knowledge just as a measure of my progress in addressing those concepts, so it is also a test of what I have done as a self-study, a little more of the same lesson. plans formal observations of the student's work, but here you can begin to see that I am considering including some of my organization, some of my mid-temperature plans, and planning ahead for some formal assessments, certificates of courses I have completed, marking that I have made emails electronics. and extra cpd so some notes and some printed sessions too so the other thing I just wanted you to notice is that for most teaching standards I have a handful of tests.
I'm just going to show you a few now so you get a little idea of how I put them together, so this is what I was talking about about how it's important to have these separate folders and then I just wrote down the title of the teaching standard and separated it along. throughout the binder, okay, here's an example of how I used formal observation notes from a teacher who observed my lesson as evidence, so what I did was highlight what was useful for this piece of feedback and then I wrote on a card how it is fulfilled. particular criteria for that teaching standard here you can see a different example and another example and another and this is an example of using the different PowerPoint slides that I used to set expectations for different types of activities and I just annotated on them to show how that meets the criteria for that teaching standard, so to show student progress using data, I printed this from the Sims and anonymized the student's name and then simply selected the relevant bits of information and summarized them on this card which also I included. lesson plans to show how I have met and also progressed in writing my lesson plan across all the different teaching standards and here is an example of evidence that I included in teaching standard 2 for progress of the which I prepared for a parents' evening, so I have the names right under my fingers of the students that I anonymized and then I just have the progress they made, what I'm happy with and what their goal should be, but then I also left some of space to write down any notes from parent's night so I can reflect on it and include it in my future planning and here are some examples of resources I made.
I chose to include this in teaching the second standard, but the really nice thing about this one is that I have included an image of some work that a student has produced in response to what I was teaching them so you can see that this is the same type of question. thatI modeled it for them and then they tried to answer a question to show their progress, so for subject matter knowledge, I actually included some notes I made when I was reviewing a topic. This was just an example of how I was studying and that's really important to improve my level biology skills at that time, so here you can see.
I'm using different examples of students' work to show how they've progressed in terms of their graphing skills, so I've just included lots of different impressions of the activity, the work they did previously, and then the work they did. currently done to show that progress, this was the audit of the different topics and I just reflected on my confidence and whether I still need to revisit it towards the end of the pgc, so it was a very comprehensive overview I would say for teaching. Standard for planning and teaching. It is very important to include many different types of lessons and also to show how you progress from your first placement to your second placement, so not only include lesson plans of what you have done in the last few months before submitting the portfolio, but that it's really important to show that journey and the progress that he made.
So here was an example of a Simpsons assignment that I created from scratch and simply narrated the type of activity and why it was useful. I also included evidence of students' work in response to that lesson. I have shown math and literacy skills. scaffold skills different tasks extend and challenge differentiate do project based learning address misconceptions and here was an example of my mid 10 plan at the time so I also wanted to show evidence of how I can plan a topic I taught sequentially looking at that planning model backwards, but also thinking about where I need to include literacy skills, math skills, retrieval practice, etc., highlighting more so that it meets the teaching standard.
I have included evidence of an evaluation of a lesson I taught formally. observation and I think it was very important for me to include this in the lesson planning because it was specifically about planning a practical science lesson, so I wanted to show that I was really thinking about safety, thinking about the demonstration and all those things. aspects in terms of what I would change next time, lots of different examples of activities I did with my students and how we use modeling and flipped learning as well, so here is some evidence for teaching standard 5 on using mind maps as differentiated work where In fact, I prepared the mind map in advance so that they could receive these instructions to then support them and this is an example of a student's work.
Here is an example of a seating plan and I track my movement in the classroom to make it informed movement and also color code it depending on whether I was a premium student, a gifted and talented English as an additional language student or a student with needs special educational and here I am showing the homework checklist that I used for a class, plus seating plans, how my seating plans. developed over time, so for the learning assessment, you can see here how I planned the different questions that I wanted to ask and I think this really met the criteria for questions that are included in teaching standard six.
This is more evidence of an observation form. that a teacher filled out for me when she watched me teach the lesson, so, for example, I used traffic light cards, modeled peer assessment and filled in the gaps, so it was very helpful for me to have it as evidence for teaching standard six and here is an example of what I included in my slides, so I exchanged books doing a pure assessment thinking about skills, which went well, even better, if it is how to give feedback, questions about the turning point, as well as more tipping point questions, quizzes, matching tasks, spaces that organizers fill and this was me using Mark Smarter which is an online tool where you can write the comments and it makes it much easier for your workload and finishes printing it like this, so all you have to do is cut them out and then hand them out to the students.
Here is an example. Always include plenty of examples from books and student work, so here's an example of their self-assessment, any and all corrections they made, and here's an example of doing more peer assessments where I gave the students students a pro forma for their presentation, feedback, and behavioral feedback. behavior management really important to reflect on what strategies are used and I also took some pictures of the board while using warning and praise systems, consequences and detentions, so I included my observation notes from lessons where the teachers had strong management behavior and I wrote a little reflection on how helpful this was to me, so for broader professional responsibilities, a lot of these are emails, so I'll keep them private, but the underlying message here are emails to show your parents communication, their parents' night trips. extracurricular clubs, any CDP or additional courses you have taken are evidenced there and I also included a presentation I made to our cohort at the time and also a small comment about the meetings I attended instead of including emails to each of these things I decided that it was going to be much more effective to summarize them on paper and break them down into trips and then events and that just details information that I did as additional responsibilities and that's it for today's video, I hope you found it really useful.
Please let me know in the comments section below what else you would add to your

pgce

portfolio or if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to help. I will see you very soon. in another video for now take care have a beautiful week and see you soon bye
