Permaculture Garden Tour and Harvest, Sustainable Backyard Gardening
what's going on growers james piggioni coming to you live from jersey it's late august here and the

garden

has just hit its second stride so today i want to take you through show you how everything's growing and what i'm

harvest

ing today let's go let's start things off by grabbing some stuff from the two raised beds we have right here so the first thing i'm gonna grab right here is a lipstick pepper and our peppers have just really started to change color to ripen so you remember earlier in the season when i was picking some of the green peppers when they were large just to make sure that the plant still produced flowers now we're letting some of them ripen so we get that nice dark color tuck loves the peppers too and he'll probably like these nice red ones again this is a lipstick pepper so we'll have him let him have just a couple bites of that i'm going to try this one too so let me just crack a little bit and try a bite very sweet excellent flavor talk approves also so now is the time when these peppers are really going to be uh just coming in droves so i'm so excited for the peppers but there's still a lot of other things we need to

harvest

like our beans right here this is the next round of beans that we have there well let's talk finish that guy off but our next round of beans are just starting to produce nice sized beans so we're going to be snacking on a lot of those and making sure we're

harvest

ing...

these i have beans here that are ready to

harvest

and i have beans two weeks behind this and then beans even two weeks behind those ones so we have a bunch of different staggered

harvest

s then you'll notice right here we've got these these are the crayola de cocina peppers these ones aren't ready yet but they're looking really good and then in front of it this pepper plant is just absolutely loaded and i lost the label for this variety so i'm not actually even sure what variety it is so put down low if you know what variety it is i'm not sure if it's supposed to switch to orange or get red but we'll see as time goes then i have a bunch of brassicas and stuff my next round of things that i have planted for the fall you'll notice i'm getting a little bit of bug damage but that's okay we sprayed this with the bt that's that organic spray so that'll help get get rid of a lot of these bugs and the new leaves will be really healthy then right here we have beans that'll be producing a little later into the season these are the yard long purple beans so just like the name they are the super long beans they're really good when you eat them young and they're going to be looking fantastic in this one section if you remember we had peas planted here beans and then another round of beans then right next to me here a lot of you have been asking about the tomatoes so a couple weeks ago i took tomato suckers from plants cut them...

off pushed them into the ground and now they've rooted so those ones that have rooted are now actually even producing fruit as we move up or actually let me show you what the base down here so here's the tomato that we stuck into the ground and you can see i topped it right there and that's the base we cut it and then it it grew from the crotch of a leaf right there so that was the sucker grew all the way up now it's got a number of tomatoes on it producing not ripe yet but still producing and some of you your tomatoes may be exhausted they may be kind of running out of steam at this time of the year but a number of mine aren't like you'll notice this sun gold cherry look at this thing this thing's like 12 feet it's insane it's fun though but if you don't have tomatoes that are still ripe and still doing well then you're probably not growing things like the sun gold cherry you're probably not growing tomatoes like the chef choice orange or the super sweet 100 you have to grow the varieties that are hybrids that are disease resistant that will do well late into the season so you could be snacking up until the frost again the sun gold cherry i've said it so many times but it's my favorite tomato we have some pears ripe i want to grab a few of those but first i want to give you just like a little overview of what the food forest looks like while i'm sitting in here it's truly become a huge forest and it's...

amazing some of the benefits that come from it some of like the fringe benefits like even the privacy and hanging out in here it's like the sound isn't as loud the trees absorb or block some of that sound so it's it's become its small little oasis so it's a lot of fun to be in here but we've got some ripe pears over here the chajuro pear this is an asian pear the butterscotch pear the flavor is so good on them i've got a nice ripe one right here so i'm gonna grab this one you can see the nice color on it a nice orange color so this should be a really really good one i could have possibly waited another couple days for it to ripen but this year the chipmunks have been ravenous and the birds too so i want to make sure i get this one we'll see if tuck even wants some i don't think he really likes pears but he wants to be here for the show good sweet flavor that butterscotch again gonna be a little more ripe but still excellent flavor so good let me take a bite and see if tak wants any want some boy it's pretty sweet he might actually like it oh looks like he's going for it yeah looks like he likes them this guy likes everything from the

garden

right boy i think he's actually enjoying it too so me and him will split this one let's move over to some other things though i have this persimmon tree right behind me and we lost some of the persimmons from that really strong wind but there's still a good amount out of them on...
here and i've said it number of times but this will be my late late season producer we're talking like late october november these things will be ripe and this hazelnut tree behind me it's been such a rough sad year for this tree i mean the emotions for this tree have gone like way up way down because it originally had so many hazelnuts i had so many high hopes for it and then all of a sudden the hazelnuts started dropping and they were blank so that was super sad and then the wind came and just ripped the tree apart on this side this is all wind damage over here and the reason that i know that it is is because on the other side there's little to no damage so this is the side where the wind just whipped at it so it took a bit of a beating but i think it will be fine for next year i want to show you on the ground how many hazelnuts it had and dropped so all these it had so many if you see them over here we would've had buckets of hazelnuts but i don't know why they just produced blanks i've done some reading on it and they don't some people just don't know exactly why it happens but when you crack open to it there's there's no hazelnut in there which is the ultimate teas if you ask me so let's move over to some of the grapes eat some of the grapes in this section and then i want to bring you to another section where there's other ones ready and then later i'm going to bring you to the concords those are ripening and...
they're the most beautiful grapes i think i've ever seen before i show you the grapes i want to show you a few other things like the figs i have right here but you'll notice in here all the shiso i have growing and this is this purple mint basil kind of combo thing even though it's in the mid family but it just forms in my opinion such an incredible contrast between the greens of things and the purple i just i love the way it looks so i let it grow everywhere and i let it self-seed a lot of times but this fig is doing real well you'll notice it's got some figs on it i'm not sure if we have enough time this year to finish these figs off so figs will fruit a lot of them twice a year so this is the later fruit so hopefully we have some that are ripe here but i have figs and pots that are doing real well that i'm going to be getting figs from in a short amount of time let me bring you over to these grapes and i love walking through this shiso it's fun it'd be cool to take a picture just sitting in here or you know with among all the shiso it smells pretty good too but let me show you these grapes up here and these ones are just getting so close to

harvest

ing so they're starting to lose you'll notice over here some of that whiteness on the outside that's one of the identifiers of ripening and then they're also starting to get a little brighter so grapes are you'll know they're ripe especially green ones because these...
are thompson seedless these are green grapes this is just from blackrock but these right here are very close to being ripe not just ripe yet so grapes won't ripen off the vine you have to let them stay on the vine to ripen and the brighter they get usually the sweeter they are the longer they stay on the sweeter they are so these ones are good i've had them already let me just try one before they're perfectly ripe so good this is the thompson seeded grape let me bring it over to another grape that's seedless before i move into the other food forest and we grab grapes from there then after that we'll move back and grab some of the concords i just wanted to get uh some tomatoes and stuff some of these are still doing well and we got hit by the storm a little bit by the tomatoes but we're not going to complain about it we're still getting some good

harvest

s and now that the weather has cooled down just a little bit the past few days the tomatoes are starting to flower again so with the super hot temperatures like over 90 95 degrees the tomatoes will stop flowering peppers too and that's what happened so now we're we're getting some of our flowers back in the tomatoes and they're going to really start producing again heavy so let's grab a couple more of these then we're going to move over to the other food forest and grab a bunch more snacks all different stuff let's head over i'm in the front corner of the newer food...
forest and i wanted to grab some grapes and bring you along behind me right here we have a new persimmon tree though doing pretty well that's going to be one that we're going to

harvest

earlier in the season these persimmons because it's the fuyu you can eat them when they're harder so right here we've got some grapes and the birds have been you know pretty greedy about them so we're covering with the insect netting i took it off and right now i'm just gonna grab some of these little ones here and they're so delicious so good but once they start to get really close to ripe again the birds just they go crazy for them seedless american grape excellent flavor and let me show you right over here where all the birds just stripped a lot of those there so when it comes down to it there has to be a balance between letting the animals and the birds get a little bit but not too much and this one right here is the cannabis grape so the first year we've ever gotten fruit from it but this is only like the third year that we've had this grape in so you don't have to have grapes in for a really long time to get fruit if you can do it correctly let me show you some of the stuff over here some of the brassicas and some of the things we have that we replanted this kale is doing fantastic that's been in for a while along this wall you can see it's just a living wall of cucumbers the next round of all cucumbers are starting to set up we've...
got some cucumbers ready in other spots so again these will produce till till the frost as we move down here we've got more rounds of zucchini all planted i've got beets growing doing real well more swiss chard cucumbers growing along the fence over there and a lot of new brassicas kale cabbage all different stuff like that let me bring you around where we've got more tomatoes more carrots eggplants just so much stuff we got to grab let's grab one of these saldaki tomatoes looking real good and one of my favorite tomatoes of all time now i want to bring you over show you some more things over here let's take a quick look and the thing about this

garden

is it might look like there's a lot of annuals in here and we're getting some nice

harvest

but this is all a food forest so there's fruit trees here and over there and everywhere we've got some apples and stuff on them so while those fruit trees are small we're waiting for them to set up and be big perennials we're going to make sure we're

harvest

ing a lot of food and the spaces underneath and around the fruit trees right here we've got next lettuces next round of lettuces planted doing real well and we've got next round of cabbage planted that thing's taking a little bit of bite but we have sprayed it with the bt and then the cucumbers along the fence line this is the next new round so in my opinion it's a lot better to try to sometimes plan a new round of...
cucumbers a new fresh round that grows so vigorously as opposed to trying to support along an old vine sometimes it's good just to replace it we've got some young cucumbers that are ready and i'm sure tuck is gonna want one so he'll probably come over here and grab his own he'll hold the plan for him he likes them when they're nice and young he likes snacking on them and if you don't have a lot of time it's good to plant uh cucumbers that are gonna ripen really quick so some are 50 to 55 days a lot of the pickling cucumbers so i'm gonna take this off let tuck finish this i know he's gonna enjoy it tuck really loves those fresh cucumbers and the fresh snacks just hit the like button if you love seeing tuck in the videos now i want to bring you over to show you a few more things right here we have lettuce that's staggered behind the lettuce that i just showed you then we have zucchini that's staggered by behind someone the other zucchini i showed you basil more broccoli planted for the fall here's my legume that i haven't really named exactly what it is but i think some of you have guessed it and then we've got some purple balmer spinach so this spinach is not a true spinach but it's perfect at this time of the year and even earlier when it's super hot out and your spinaches won't grow so it's so fantastic we've got some eggplants that are ready some pretty big sized eggplants i want to cut these...
off so that the eggplant will focus on producing more eggplants so we'll get this one off nice size one looks pretty good and it looks like a nice one right next to it as well this year i didn't plant as many eggplants as last year because last year i had so many extra eggplants i didn't even know what to do with them so these are pretty nice ones not too bad we'll keep moving through though and over here we've got more kale that's ripe and ready we've got a crazy dog who's going through the beds he's not supposed to be hey get off of that bed boyle come on doc what are you doing boy so this guy's this guy's nuts right here we've got some new red russian kale that we just planted and the red russian kale is going to be one of your heartiest kales when it comes to temperature wise so super cold hardy these will grow so late into the season so we're hoping for that back here we just have more and more carrots that need to be

harvest

ed so we'll grab a couple of those some nice nantes it looks like scarlet nantes see if tuck wants a bite of those want one of those boyo so we'll let him snack on those he's basically having a nice lunch today out here i've got to get more of these carrots but i don't want to put them in here because it's going to make the whole thing dirty and then behind me here we have even more beans set up that are just uh going to be ripening pretty soon and then you know we don't...
like to waste space here so even to the right of me on this fence where we grew cucumbers uh the grapes are starting to get very close to ripening and if you pan just over there more and to the left you'll notice there's just more and more grapes along the fence line so soon the grape

harvest

s are going to be coming in real heavy and real big so i'll bring you guys along for that it's going to be a lot of fun and you'll notice the size of my basils my basils are big and they just get bigger and bigger that's because i prune the tops i don't let them flower that encourages more and more growth now i want to move over here show you the size of some of these tomatoes here and i might take this tomato right here even though it's not perfectly ripe because it's a monster it will ripen off the vine and the birds have just been really pecking out a lot of my larger tomatoes so i'm just going to take this one because it's a complete monster and let it ripen off the vine a little bit now i want to show you some zucchini then i'm going to announce the winner for the for the drawing we did just the other day for a gift card so in right here is my pride and joy zucchini the greatest zucchini i've ever grown the zucchini plant that stem right there defies the loss of nature i would say i mean i've never seen anything like it looks like a mutant stem and the vine borers i think tried to come after it a couple times but it didn't...
really care it just brushed them off and just said i'm just gonna keep growing and that's what it did it's produced so many zucchinis from me that if you could have a plant like this all you would need was one plant and just take this one these are the size i love getting them ideally oh man they're so good i love these castada romanesco zucchinis but let's do the announcement for who won the gift cards so the idea was to give two gift cards away i put a number through a random number generator one to five hundred was the idea i put it in and the number that came out was 371 there was only one person who guessed 371 and that was tristan so tristan you're gonna win the 25 gift card then there were three people who guessed and there was no one who goes 370. so i just went up a number to 372. so there are three people with 372. sharon desiree and i believe kyle so i'm going to email you guys i will give all of you just a 15 uh gift card instead of the 25 we'll split it between three essentially so now let me bring you over to get some more zucchini and we're going to be doing another giveaway so i'll mention it a little later in the video probably and so you guys can get some more seeds so you can be growing a lot of this stuff next year look at that same zucchini a little different shape a little different characteristic little style and we've got even more back here let me grab this zucchini these plants are a little exhausted...
they're still producing well that's why i didn't take them out though but because they're so exhausted i wanted to make sure i started new rounds of plants like the other ones i showed you but i've got ones ahead of that right over here so if you just follow me over you'll notice we've got a nice row of beautiful zucchinis all starting to come into their own looking real healthy and we've got this one right here it's a yellow zucchini it looks like a mix or something i don't even know what variety it is so i was thinking it might be the golden zucchini i may have planted some of those i think that's what it is i just don't know what the coloration is the bottom possibly a hybrid but i don't think so because i planted all new seed here so it might be the golden zucchini doing real well but i just want you to kind of turn around and get a get a feel maybe come over here of what it looks like to be in this area of how much things we actually have growing in this section so we're trying to push the limit in every way we've got all those beds back there everything growing along the fence line we go vertical as much as we can with the tomatoes we've got all the fruit trees mixed in here that pear tree is having a lot of trouble with uh what looks like a leaf spot but we'll get past that and then a lot of the zucchinis and stuff this is just in preparation for all those perennials getting bigger because if you...
remember earlier in the season we were eating a lot of these strawberries then we were eating the blueberries we were eating the black cap raspberries we're waiting for all the peaches apples and pears to be large enough to really produce for us but let's get all that food while we're waiting before i move into the old food forest and show you the concord grapes i just wanted to show you some of the new things i have planted here in this bed we've got some winged beans planted there should still be time and then everywhere between you can see we've got peas planted that are just poking up through we've got plenty of time to still grow peas because they're so cold hardy and we've got more of the malabar the purple malabar spinach that just grows up along here i mean unlimited salads it's a fantastic plant zucchini is a little staggered behind and peas planted in between those now let's grab some of the concord grapes right here and i cover them with an insect netting because the birds i mentioned them already but let me bring you in and show you how they're starting to get that beautiful color look at that oh man the concord grapes are my favorite just so striking soon they'll all be nice and purple and the thing about grapes is even though they're turning this purple like this doesn't mean they're completely ripe so they'll change color before they're completely ripe you'll notice they still have a little...
that white on the outside and they're not super bright yet so they're not completely ripe but their flavor is still so good right now when it comes to grapes like this i have a lot of them but not enough to like make a wine or anything so what i do is i just come out and pick and eat them as i want right off the vine that's the way to do it in my opinion so if you look to the right a little bit there's a more grape setting up this is going to be a nice couple clusters right here you can see they're just starting to change color at the bottom some of the grapes are a little bit small but most of them are a really good size that has to do with how many grapes you allow to keep on the vine but as we swing around here a little more on this side you'll notice that there's a lot of grapes back here see so we'll do a video about pruning grapes and identifying kind of how to how to get the best ones for your particular location because when it comes to grapes this concord grape is an excellent one if you have issues with the black route because once it gets to a pretty small size it's resistant to the black rod while a lot of while a lot of the other ones aren't so it can make a big difference to have the right grape right variety seated great but so good slip skin american that's today's video growers thanks for watching i hope you enjoyed it i hope you got something out of it like i mentioned earlier i'm going to do another...
giveaway right now and we're going to do the same thing we did last time but the number is going to be between 1 and 1500 so guess the number between 100 and 1500 send into the email i'm going to put right here and the next video will announce the winners just like we did today and if you guys did enjoy the video hit the like button hit the subscribe button share with your friends don't forget to check out the merch download and remember whenever you're shopping on amazon start your shopping with our amazon affiliate link me and tuck just wanted to say thank you so much for being out here with us because i keep running into this issue especially this time of the year i realize that where i just don't i get so focused on what i'm doing that i don't appreciate all the things that i have especially like you know the big
